Abstract
The limited solubility of graphene in water can be attributed to the existence of π-π bonds connecting its layers. Functionalized graphene or graphene oxide (GO) is frequently produced in order to overcome the shortcomings of graphene. Using density functional theory (DFT) calculation, functionalized graphene with various combinations of hydroxyl, epoxy, and carboxylic functional groups were investigated computationally. The study focused on the effects of functional group combinations on the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) and lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energies, giving information about the chemical reactivity and stability of the molecules under investigation. Global chemical reactivity descriptors, including chemical hardness, softness, electronegativity, chemical potential, and electrophilicity index, were calculated to further elucidate the overall stability and reactivity of the molecules. The results demonstrated that the introduction of oxygen-containing functional groups on graphene significantly influenced its electronic properties, leading to variations in the chemical reactivity and stability. Molecular electrostatic potential (MEP) maps highlighted the susceptibility of specific regions to electrophilic and nucleophilic attacks. The flexibility and stability of functionalized graphene through root mean square fluctuation (RMSF) and root mean square deviation (RMSD) analyses indicate the stability of functionalized graphene in water. This comprehensive computational investigation provides valuable insights into the design and understanding of functionalized graphene for potential applications in drug delivery.

Abstract
In this paper, the adsorption behavior of group III nitrides (B12N12, Al12N12, and Ga12N12) nanocages to sulforaphane (SF) anticancer medicine were studied by density functional theory (DFT). The adsorption energy, solvation energy, desorption time and related quantum molecular descriptors were calculated in neutral and acidic solutions. When the drugs were adsorbed to nanocages, the structure of nanocages and drugs changed after adsorption, indicating that the process was effective adsorption. The adsorption energy and solvation energy of the complexes created after adsorption were negative values, which indicated that the structure of complexes formed by adsorption were stable. According to charge decomposition analysis (CDA) and natural bonding orbitals (NBO), drugs act as charge donors and nanocages act as charge acceptors, so that the charge flows from drugs to nanocages. Thermodynamic calculations demonstrate that drugs adsorption on nanocages is a spontaneous exothermic process. The calculation of quantum molecular descriptors confirmed that drugs adsorption on nanocages increased the chemical reactivity and solubility of drugs, which facilitated its transfer in biological fluids. Both interaction region index (IRI) and topological analysis of atom in molecule (AIM) revealed Van Der Waals interaction between drugs and nanocages. Protonation studies demonstrated that acidic circumstances could improve the polarity of complexes, increase the solvation effect, and boost drugs release in target cancer cells. The results of this work indicate that X12N12(X = B, Al, Ga) nanocages can be used as the delivery vehicle of SF drug.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Nanocarriers allow the connection between biomolecules and other structures to enhance the treatment efficacy, through the biomolecule's properties to an existing drug, or to allow a better and specific delivery. Apigenin and orientin are biomolecules with excellent therapeutic properties that are proposed in the fight against COVID-19. Besides that, graphene oxide is a nanomaterial that exhibits antiviral activity and is used as a nanocarrier of several drugs. We evaluated in this work, through molecular docking, the binding affinity between these structures to the receptor-binding domain of spike protein of two coronavirus variants, Delta and Omicron. The results indicate that all the structures exhibit affinity with the two protein targets, with binding affinity values of -11.88 to -6.65 kcal/mol for the Delta variant and values of -9.58 to -13.20 kcal/mol for the Omicron variant, which is a successful value as found in the literature as a potential inhibitor of SARS-CoV-2 infection. Also, through first-principles calculations based on Density Functional Theory, the interaction of graphene oxide with the biomolecules apigenin and orientin occurred. The results exhibit weak binding energy, which indicates that physical adsorption occurs, with better results when the biomolecule is set in parallel to the nanomaterial due to attractive π-π staking. These results are conducive to the development of a nanocarrier.

Abstract
Caulerpin, a bis-indole alkaloid is isolated from a new source Sargassum platycarpum, brown alga (family Sargassaceae) for the first time. The structure of caulerpin was characterized by IR, H1NMR, C13 NMR, HSQC, HMBC, EI-MS spectroscopy. Antifungal results suggest that caulerpin has been inhibited Cryptococcus neoformas (12 mm) and Candida albicans (7 mm) than other microbes. In vitro anticancer activity of caulerpin has been explored by cell viability assay against new human cancer cell line (liver-HepG2). The results show that caulerpin has low IC50 value (24.6 ± 2.1 µg/mL) against HepG-2. Based on the least toxic activity of caulerpin, these results encourage for future in vivo anticancer study. The binding of caulerpin molecule with the two nucleobases (T/U) bases has been studied by DFT methods. According to the AIM analysis, there are two types of interactions between caulerpin and T/U bases partially covalent partially electrostatic and electrostatic in gas and water phases. Based on NBO analysis, the charges were transferred from the lone-pair (n) in orbitals of O atoms of caulerpin to the σ* orbitals of T/U bases atoms. ΔEbin in the state of caulerpin-T bases complexes are lower than those in the caulerpin-U bases complexes in both gas and water phase. MD simulation supported that caulerpin-T/U bases complexes are stable in presence of explicit water phase. Thus, the findings of our study will be useful for giving an insight into the caulerpin/bases complexes that could be helpful in future experimental studies to develop the performance of caulerpin molecules as natural candidate drug. Abstract
Nanocluster based drug delivery systems are very useful in modern medical treatment and interaction mechanism of desflurane (DES), isoflurane ISO), sevoflurane (SEV) over carboxyl substituted graphene-doped with O and S atoms were investigated in the present study. Different electronic and chemical properties of adsorbed desflurane, isoflurane and sevoflurane with nanoclusters are analyzed. To track the drugs, SERS is used as an efficient method and drug's detection was analyzed using SERS. DES's energy over GQD-S is greater than that over GQD-O nanocluster and for ISO and SEV, adsorption energies over the O/S nanoclusters are same. The title drugs work on the reactives sites and got adsorbed. For ISO, there is an increase in fluorine atom charges and for DES and SEV, the fluorine atom charge decreases due to adsorption in both O/S nanoclusters. Changes in chemical descriptors are identified for the sensing property of drug-nanoclusters.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
Chitin is a long-chain polymer of N-acetyl-glucosamine, which is regularly found in the exoskeleton of arthropods including insects, shellfish and the cell wall of fungi. It has been known that chitin can be used for biological and biomedical applications, especially as a biomaterial for tissue repairing, encapsulating drug for drug delivery. However, chitin has been postulated as an inducer of proinflammatory cytokines and certain diseases including asthma. Likewise, chitosan, a long-chain polymer of N-acetyl-glucosamine and d-glucosamine derived from chitin deacetylation, and chitosan oligosaccharide, a short chain polymer, have been known for their potential therapeutic effects, including anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, antidiarrheal, and anti-Alzheimer effects. This review summarizes potential utilization and limitation of chitin, chitosan and chitosan oligosaccharide in a variety of diseases. Furthermore, future direction of research and development of chitin, chitosan, and chitosan oligosaccharide for biomedical applications is discussed.

Abstract
Polymeric films for various biomedical applications require to be biocompatible and non- toxic. Chemical route of modifications for functionalization of the films for improved properties lead to undesirable effects for biological applications. Hence a natural way to enhancing their properties is by functionalizing them using plant extracts. This report investigates the synthesis of bioactive phytochemical loaded polymer using Triticum aestivum (wheatgrass) extract incorporated in tripolyphosphate crosslinked chitosan. Physical and mechanical properties of the extract functionalized crosslinked chitosan were analyzed and this showed significant changes in thickness, tensile strength and % elongation of the blend. The extract functionalized chitosan was characterized using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDAX) confirming the interaction between the functional moieties of the extract and polymer. Antimicrobial analysis showed improved activity against Escherichia coli and Staphylococus aureus and Candida albicans. Presence of the extract in crosslinked chitosan enhanced the cytocompatibility in 3T3 cells carried out by MTT assay and showed improved cell migration properties determined by scratch assay.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract
The adsorption property of Sumatriptan drug onto graphene oxide (GO) was studied using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. All possible initial positions of drug adsorption were considered to find out which one is energetically favorable. According to the achieved findings, the stronger interactions occurred between the positively polarized parts of the Sumatriptan (i.e. hydrogen atoms of the-OH and -NH parts) and negatively polarized oxygen atoms of the GO. The presence of non-covalent interactions of GO and Sumatriptan was confirmed based on the determined geometrical parameters, electronic structure analysis results, and adsorption energies. Different parameters such as frontier molecular orbital (FMO), natural bond orbital (NBO), dipole moment, and solation energy were investigated. Global indices such as hardness, softness, chemical potential, and electrophilicity of all systems were calculated and compared. The adsorption energy values were determined within the range of -8.39 to -10.59 kcal/mol (-1.87 to -5.67 BSSE corrected) in the water solvent for different adsorption geometries. The obtained results show that GO can act as a promising carrier/sensor for Sumatriptan drug in practical application.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
In this study, forskolin-loaded human serum albumin nanoparticles (FR-HSANPs) were successfully prepared by incorporation and affinity-binding methods. FR-HSANPs were characterized by transmission electron microscope that most of them are circular in shape and size is around 340 nm. The drug loading was more than 88% and further sustained release profiles were observed as it is 77.5% in 24 h time. Additionally, the cytotoxicity results with HepG2 cells indicated that FR-HSANPs showed significantly higher cytotoxicity and lower cell viability as compared to free forskolin (FR). Furthermore, to understand the binding mechanism of human serum albumin (HSA) with forskolin resulted from fluorescence quenching as a static mechanism and the binding constant is 6.26 ± 0.1 × 104 M-1, indicating a strong binding affinity. Further, association and dissociation kinetics of forskolin-HSA was calculated from surface plasmon resonance spectroscopy and the binding constant found to be Kforskolin = 3.4 ± 0.24 × 104 M-1 and also fast dissociation was observed. Further, we used circular dichroism and molecular dynamics simulations to elucidate the possible structural changes including local conformational changes and rigidity of the residues of both HSA and HSA-forskolin complexes.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Abstract
The present study focuses on the prediction and investigation of binding properties of penicillamine with pure (5,5) single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) and functionalized SWCNT (f-SWCNT) through the B3LYP and M06-2X functionals using the 6-31G** basis set. The electronic and structural properties, adsorption energy and frontier molecular orbitals of various configurations are examined. Our theoretical results indicated that the interaction of the nanotubes with penicillamine molecule is weak so that the drug adsorption process is typically physisorption. Also, results of theoretical calculations show that the adsorption of the drug molecule on f-SWCNT is stronger with shorter intermolecular distances in comparison to pure SWCNT. The natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of studied systems demonstrates that the charge is transferred from penicillamine molecule to the nanotubes. Furthermore, molecular dynamics (MD) simulation is employed to evaluate the dynamic and diffusion behavior of drug molecule on SWCNT and f-SWCNT. Energy results show that drug molecule spontaneously moves toward the carriers, and the van der Waals energy contributions in drug adsorption are more than electrostatic interaction. The obtained results from MD simulation confirm that the functionalization of SWCNT leads to increase in the solubility of the carrier in aqueous solution.Communicated by Ramaswamy H. Sarma.

Abstract
The interaction of 6-Thioguanine molecule, an antitumor drug with carbon nanotube and boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) is investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Based on the obtained results, the strongest negative van der Waals interaction is found between 6-TG and BNNT among the studied nanotubes, which indicated BNNT is a better nanocarrier of the 6-TG drug than CNT within biological systems. Moreover, the adsorption and electronic properties of the 6-Thioguanine interacted with boron-nitride nanotube has been studied within the framework of density functional theory calculations. The negative binding energy values denote that there is the favorable interaction between 6-TG drug and BNNT at the studied 6-TG/BNNT complexes. Also, the amounts of the binding energies indicated that the 6-Thioguanine molecule physically interacts with the surface of BNNT. The values of electron densities and their Laplacian have been analyzed using the Bader's theory of atoms in molecules to characterize the nature of the intermolecular interactions through the topological parameters. We hope that the results of this work may provide useful information about the nature of the nanotube-drug molecule interactions and highlight the ability of these materials to be used as an adsorbent enhancing delivery of drug to cancer cells.
