An examination of ecological predictors of health literacy in black college students

Investigation of health literacy status and related influencing factors in military health providers of Chinese People's liberation Army, a cross-sectional study

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate health literacy and analyze its influencing factors in military health providers of the Chinese People's Liberation Army (PLA Army).

METHODS

From November to December 2018, cluster sampling was used to select 1512 military health providers from the Army Medical University. Health literacy was measured by using the Chinese Citizen Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ) (2015 edition). Influencing factors that may affect health literacy were assessed using the chi-square test and multivariate logistic regression models.

RESULTS

The knowledge rate of health literacy was relatively low (21.6%). The knowledge rate of health-related skills (HRS, 18.7%) was the lowest of the three aspects of health literacy, and the knowledge rate of chronic diseases (CD, 19.6%) was the lowest of the six dimensions of health literacy. Participants who were older, were female, were of Han ethnicity, were the only child in their families, came from urban areas, never used tobacco, and had higher household income were likely to have higher health literacy.

CONCLUSION

The health literacy levels of military health providers of the PLA Army are relatively low. Further research and health education are necessary to improve health literacy.

Health literacy: exploring disparities among college students

BACKGROUND

Health literacy is a multidimensional concept that is considered a primary public health concern. This concept is often neglected in research, and the evidence regarding health literacy in college students is limited. The aim of this study was two-fold: to determine the needs and limitations of health literacy among college students and to explore the relationships among the nine dimensions of health literacy and sociodemographic factors, including age, gender, nationality, year of study, field of study, smoking status, history of chronic diseases, use of on-campus gym, and the intention to exercise on-campus.

METHODS

This study was conducted using a cross-sectional approach. A total of 520 college students participated in this study. The average age was 21.03 years (SD = 2.29), with 47.5% males and 52.5% females. Data were collected using a demographics questionnaire and the Health Literacy Questionnaire (HLQ). In addition to descriptive statistics, multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) and follow-up analyses were performed to explore any statistically significant mean differences among levels of health literacy and sociodemographic factors.

RESULTS

The levels of health literacy on the nine HLQ scales were lower than the levels reported in the literature. Multivariate analysis showed a significant effect of age, gender, smoking status, year of study, and field of study on the level of health literacy. Follow-up analyses revealed that female students, students from the health-related faculties, and those who do not smoke have higher levels of health literacy compared to their counterparts. A detailed comparison between the levels of the HLQ scales was made based on students' demographic characteristics. The field of study had the most prominent effect on the level of college students' health literacy; mean differences were statistically significant (p < .001), and effect sizes were large (ranging from .66 to 1.35 for the nine scales of the HLQ).

CONCLUSION

College students' health literacy is influenced by demographic characteristics. Such variations could amplify some of the existing health disparities. The implications of the findings on health, health promotion, and interprofessional education are discussed.

Health literacy in solid-organ transplantation: a model to improve understanding

Optimizing wellness and health are the most critical goals for patients post solid-organ transplantation. Low health literacy has important implications for wellness and health, increasing patient risk for negative health outcomes. More than 30% of the general US patient population has low health literacy, and solid-organ transplant recipients (SOTRs) may be especially vulnerable to low health literacy and its adverse impact on health outcomes. A comprehensive literature review was conducted and a model was adapted to better depict factors associated with low health literacy. Based on the Paasche-Orlow and Wolf model of health literacy, the Health Literacy Model in Transplantation (HeaL-T) provides a foundation to visually demonstrate the relationships among variables associated with low health literacy and to develop evidence-based strategies to improve care. The model depicts a number of patient and healthcare level factors associated with health literacy, several of which have bi-directional or reciprocal relationships, including access and utilization of healthcare, provider-patient interaction, and self-management/adherence. The impact of these factors and their relationships to SOTR outcomes are reviewed. The HeaL-T represents an important step in developing holistic understanding of the complexity of health literacy in SOTRs and offers clinicians a base from which to design strategies to mitigate adverse health effects including increased hospitalizations, graft failure, and mortality.
