Abstract
Fungi compose a minority but a common component of normal oral microbiota and contribute to oral and systemic health by interacting with bacterial inhabitants. This study investigated the relationship of oral fungal profiles to health status and bacterial profiles of 159 elderly adults receiving community support and home care services. Fungal and bacterial densities and compositions were determined based on the fungal ribosomal internal transcribed spacer region and bacterial 16S rRNA gene amplicon analyses, respectively. The total fungal density of 87 individuals exceeded 5,000 copies, and their microbiota was characterized by significantly less dense bacterial populations and lower relative abundances of oral health-associated taxa, such as Neisseria perflava and Porphyromonas pasteri, compared with those with less than 5,000 copies of fungi. These individuals were significantly older, had fewer teeth, had lower physical function, and comprised more denture users and individuals with cognitive decline. Fungal compositions were classified into three profiles (Candida albicans-dominant, non-albicans Candida-dominant, and non-Candida-dominant), and individuals with a non-albicans Candida-dominant profile exhibited significantly lower physical and cognitive function than those with the Candida albicans-dominant profile. These results demonstrate that a high-density fungal population co-occurs with poor oral and systemic health status of the host and dysbiosis of the bacterial community, and particularly, the overgrowth of non-albicans Candida species may be implicated in worsening systemic conditions. IMPORTANCE The interaction between fungal and bacterial components involved in the virulence of oral microbiota has received attention. This study demonstrates that an increase in fungal components is associated with a dysbiotic bacterial community and poor health status in elderly adults. Among individuals with a high-density fungal population, particularly, those with a non-albicans Candida-dominant profile had lower physical and cognitive functions than those with a C. albicans-dominant profile. These findings indicate that the evaluation of fungal components, in addition to the bacterial components, is important to understand the involvement of oral microbiota in oral and systemic diseases in elderly adults.

Abstract
In recent years, non-thermal plasma (NTP) has emerged as a promising tool for decontamination and disinfection within the food industry. Given the increasing resistance of microbial biofilms to conventional disinfectants and their adverse environmental effects, this method has significant potential for eliminating biofilm formation or mitigating the metabolic activity of grown biofilms. A comparative study was conducted evaluating the efficacy of UV radiation and NTP in eradicating mature biofilms of four common foodborne filamentous fungal contaminants: Alternaria alternata, Aspergillus niger, Fusarium culmorum, and Fusarium graminearum. The findings reveal that while UV radiation exhibits variable efficacy depending on the duration of exposure and fungal species, NTP induces substantial morphological alterations in biofilms, disrupting hyphae, and reducing extracellular polymeric substance production, particularly in A. alternata and F. culmorum. Notably, scanning electron microscopy analysis demonstrates significant disruption of the hyphae in NTP-treated biofilms, indicating its ability to penetrate the biofilm matrix, which is a promising outcome for biofilm eradication strategies. The use of NTP could offer a more environmentally friendly and potentially more effective alternative to traditional disinfection methods.

Abstract
Quinoline is a hard-to-degrade organic compound widely found in coal chemical wastewater, that seriously affects the ecological environment and human health. A number of biochemical methods are already available for quinoline degradation, but the use of microbial community sensing for quinoline degradation has not been studied in depth. Therefore, this paper focuses on the enhanced mechanism of quorum-sensing signaling molecules in the biofilm formation process during quinoline degradation by functional strains of bacteria. In this paper, the effects of the signal molecules C4-HSL and C6-HSL on the adhesion ability, colony diameter, biofilm formation ability and biofilm morphology of functional strains of quinoline degrading bacteria (Ochrobactrum sp., LC-1) were investigated, and the results showed that both signal molecules promoted the biofilm formation process during the degradation of quinoline by exhibiting an efficient biofortification effect. Both signal molecules could enhance the colony diameter of strain LC-1, where C4-HSL could enhance the biomass of strain LC-1 and stimulate the secretion of extracellular polysaccharides; and C6-HSL could induce the enhancement of adhesion performance and the secretion of extracellular proteins from strain LC-1; both molecules together enhanced the biofilm formation process of strain LC-1. This study has practical application in the degradation of quinoline in coal chemical wastewater.

Abstract
Several filamentous fungi species as Fusarium oxysporum or Cladosporium sp. can form biofilms by themselves or by participating in polymicrobial biofilms with bacteria. However, despite the high impact of biofilm on the food industry and the high efforts done to control biofilm produced by bacteria in the food area, there has been little study of strategies to control fungal biofilm in this area. In this study, the antibiofilm activity of the safe antimicrobial compound ethyl lauroyl arginate (LAE) was investigated against food spoilage fungi (Cladosporium cladosporioides, Aspergillus ochraceus, Penicillium italicum, Botrytis cynerea and Fusarium oxyspoum). Finally, the efficacy of a varnish-based coating incorporating LAE and coated onto polystyrene microtiter plates has been evaluated as a strategy to reduce fungal biofilm formation. The results of the 2,3-bis-(2-metoxi-4-nitro-5-sulfofenil)-2H-tetrazoilo-5-carboxanilida (XTT) assay, which measure the biofilm metabolic activity of moulds, demonstrated that LAE reduced significantly the formation of fungal biofilm at concentrations from 6 to 25 mg/L. This reduction was confirmed by the micrographs obtained by scanning electronic microscopy (SEM). In addition, LAE also showed antifungal activity against established biofilms. Particularly, it reduced their metabolic activity and viability at concentrations from 6 to 25 mg/L according to results obtained in the XTT assay and observations made by confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). Finally, active coating incorporating from 2% of LAE proved to reduce significantly the biofilm formation in C. cladosporioides, B. cynerea and F. oxyspoum according to the results obtained in the XTT assay. However, the released studies indicated that the retention of LAE in the coating should be improved to prolong their activity.

Abstract
Microbial contaminations are responsible for many chronic, healthcare, persistent microbial infections and illnesses in the food sector, therefore their control is an important public health challenge. Over the past few years, essential oils (EOs) have emerged as interesting alternatives to synthetic antimicrobials as they are biodegradable, extracted from natural sources and potent antimicrobials. Through their multiple mechanisms of actions and target sites, no microbial resistance has been developed against them till present. Although extensive documentation has been reported on the antimicrobial activity of EOs, comparisons between the use of whole EOs or their active components alone for an antimicrobial treatment are less abundant. It is also essential to have a good knowledge about EOs to be used as alternatives to the conventional antimicrobial products such as chemical disinfectants. Moreover, it is important to focus not only on planktonic vegetative microorganisms, but to study also the effect on more resistant forms like spores and biofilms. The present article reviews the current knowledge on the mechanisms of antimicrobial activities of EOs and their active components on microorganisms in different forms. Additionally, in this review, the ultimate advantages of encapsulating EOs or combining them with other hurdles for enhanced antimicrobial treatments are discussed.

Abstract
Penicillium expansum is a necrotrophic wound fungal pathogen that secrets virulence factors to kill host cells including cell wall degrading enzymes (CWDEs), proteases, and mycotoxins such as patulin. During the interaction between P. expansum and its fruit host, these virulence factors are strictly modulated by intrinsic regulators and extrinsic environmental factors. In recent years, there has been a rapid increase in research on the molecular mechanisms of pathogenicity in P. expansum; however, less is known regarding the bacteria–fungal communication in the fruit environment that may affect pathogenicity. Many bacterial species use quorum-sensing (QS), a population density-dependent regulatory mechanism, to modulate the secretion of quorum-sensing signaling molecules (QSMs) as a method to control pathogenicity. N-acyl homoserine lactones (AHLs) are Gram-negative QSMs. Therefore, QS is considered an antivirulence target, and enzymes degrading these QSMs, named quorum-quenching enzymes, have potential antimicrobial properties. Here, we demonstrate that a bacterial AHL lactonase can also efficiently degrade a fungal mycotoxin. The mycotoxin is a lactone, patulin secreted by fungi such as P. expansum. The bacterial lactonase hydrolyzed patulin at high catalytic efficiency, with a kcat value of 0.724 ± 0.077 s−1 and KM value of 116 ± 33.98 μM. The calculated specific activity (kcat/KM) showed a value of 6.21 × 103 s−1M−1. While the incubation of P. expansum spores with the purified lactonase did not inhibit spore germination, it inhibited colonization by the pathogen in apples. Furthermore, adding the purified enzyme to P. expansum culture before infecting apples resulted in reduced expression of genes involved in patulin biosynthesis and fungal cell wall biosynthesis. Some AHL-secreting bacteria also express AHL lactonase. Here, phylogenetic and structural analysis was used to identify putative lactonase in P. expansum. Furthermore, following recombinant expression and purification of the newly identified fungal enzyme, its activity with patulin was verified. These results indicate a possible role for patulin and lactonases in inter-kingdom communication between fungi and bacteria involved in fungal colonization and antagonism and suggest that QQ lactonases can be used as potential antifungal post-harvest treatment.
