The relations among relatedness needs, subjective well-being, and depression of Korean elderly

Living arrangements and depression of the older adults- evidence from the Chinese longitudinal healthy longevity survey

BACKGROUND

The mental health and living arrangements of older adults are worthy of attention. Previous studies have pointed out that the living arrangements may be related to older adults' depression. However, it has not been found that studies concern the relationship between actual living arrangements, living arrangement preferences, and the fit between living arrangement preferences and reality and depression in older adults, so we carried out this study.

METHODS

The data from the Chinese longitudinal healthy longevity survey were used in this study. With the older adults' depression as the dependent variable and the living arrangement related variables as the independent variable, we constructed three binary-logistic regression analysis models to explore the potential relationship between living arrangement related variables and depression in older adults.

RESULTS

We found that the actual living arrangements, living arrangement preferences, and the fit between living arrangement preferences and reality are significantly correlated with depression in older adults. Specifically, older adults living alone or only with the spouse are at greater risk of depression. Older adults who prefer living alone or only with the spouse are at relatively low risk of depression. Older adults whose living arrangement preferences do not match reality have a higher risk of depression.

CONCLUSION

The living arrangement related variables are significantly correlated with depression in older adults. In addition to the actual living arrangements, living arrangement preferences and whether the living arrangement preferences fit with reality are also related to the depression of older adults.

Evidence and theory for lower rates of depression in larger US urban areas

It is commonly assumed that cities are detrimental to mental health. However, the evidence remains inconsistent and at most, makes the case for differences between rural and urban environments as a whole. Here, we propose a model of depression driven by an individual's accumulated experience mediated by social networks. The connection between observed systematic variations in socioeconomic networks and built environments with city size provides a link between urbanization and mental health. Surprisingly, this model predicts lower depression rates in larger cities. We confirm this prediction for US cities using four independent datasets. These results are consistent with other behaviors associated with denser socioeconomic networks and suggest that larger cities provide a buffer against depression. This approach introduces a systematic framework for conceptualizing and modeling mental health in complex physical and social networks, producing testable predictions for environmental and social determinants of mental health also applicable to other psychopathologies.

Story-Sharing Intervention to Improve Depression and Well-Being in Older Adults Transitioning to Long-Term Care

Older adults frequently experience depression and reduced well-being when transitioning to long-term care (LTC) that can lead to increased risk for mortality. In the current randomized controlled trial, older adults (N = 93) who were transitioning to LTC facilities in Southeast Florida were enlisted. It was hypothesized that when transitioning to LTC (a) story sharing (i.e., sharing stories in groups) could lead to reduced depression and improved well-being, and (b) baseline sociodemographic characteristics could predict depression and well-being. Baseline results revealed that participants were not depressed and had moderate well-being, and postintervention results indicated that there were no significant improvements in depression (p = 0.35) and well-being (p = 0.41). Some baseline sociodemographic characteristics predicted depression (p = 0.04) and well-being (p = 0.03). Future research should incorporate moderate depression as an inclusion criterion and more weeks of story-sharing sessions. Targets: Adults age 65 and older transitioning to LTC. Intervention Description: Two to three participants met as a group to share five stories over 3 weeks. Mechanisms of Action: Story sharing will improve well-being. A 10-Year Interval Study About the Sexual Life and Attitudes of Korean Women: The Korean Internet Sexuality Survey (KISS) 2014, Part 2

BACKGROUND

Many studies on sexual attitudes and behavior have been performed to improve sexual health.

AIM

To evaluate changing trends in Korean female sexual life and attitudes in an internet-based survey at 10-year intervals.

METHODS

The survey was targeted toward 20- to 59-year-old women who were asked to complete the questionnaire only if they were sexually active. The survey contained 110 questions about demographic statistics, sexual life, and attitudes that were crafted based on the 2004 study.

RESULTS

In total, 516 women participated in the study; the questionnaire response rate was 16.0%. The mean frequency of intercourse (FOI) per month was 3.46 ± 2.56 in 2014 vs 5.34 ± 3.84 in 2004. Women in their 20s and 30s in 2014 reported a lower mean FOI than those in 2004. There was no significant difference in the mean FOI in 2004 vs 2014 for women who in their 40s. Risk factors for lower FOI were being older, being single, and having dyspareunia. Most Korean women had positive attitudes toward sex (3.2 ± 0.6 of 5) and considered it as important (3.3 ± 0.7 of 5) as those surveyed in 2004. However, women 20 to 39 years old had less positive attitudes toward sex than in the past decade. Women in their 40s were more active and had more conversations with their partners. Of women using contraceptives, 63.8% were found to use less effective methods, such as intercourse withdrawal and the fertility awareness method.

CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS

Assessment of changing trends in Korean female sexual life, attitudes, and contraceptive methods could help to establish proper national sexual education programs and campaigns.

STRENGTHS AND LIMITATIONS

This study was not a cohort study, because subjects in the 2014 were not identical to those in the 2004 study. Nevertheless, we applied the same inclusion and exclusion criteria for this internet survey, a suitable tool to evaluate the sex life of women, which is often considered a sensitive and private issue in Asian culture.

CONCLUSIONS

Compared with the 2004 survey, young Korean women had fewer sexual relationships and had a less positive attitude toward sex. In addition, many women used less effective methods of contraception. Aging in community and local NGOs: Empowering marginalized older women in South Korea

This article is based on an embedded case study of selected older people's self-help groups in urban South Korea, which aim to assist community-dwelling older adults, particularly poor and marginalized women, to age in their community and remain active and contributing members. The study highlights the importance of the role and capacity of nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) as partner organizations. Implications are important for other aging societies, particularly in Asia, where older women have been often confined by patriarchal oppression.
