Abstract
BACKGROUND Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are common among people with dementia from the early stages and can appear even in mild cognitive impairment (MCI). However, the prognostic impact of BPSD is unclear. This study examined the association between BPSD and mortality among people with cognitive impairment. METHODS This longitudinal study involved 1,065 males and 1,681 females (mean age: males = 77.1 years; females = 78.6 years) with MCI or dementia diagnosis, from the National Center for Geriatrics and Gerontology-Life Stories of People with Dementia (NCGG-STORIES), a single-center memory clinic-based cohort study in Japan that registered first-time outpatients from 2010-2018. Information about death was collected through a mail survey returned by participants or their close relatives, with an up to 8-year follow-up. BPSD was assessed using the Dementia Behavior Disturbance Scale (DBD) at baseline. RESULTS During the follow-up period, 229 (28.1%) male and 254 (15.1%) female deaths occurred. Cox proportional hazards regression analysis showed that higher DBD scores were significantly associated with increased mortality risk among males, but not females (compared with the lowest quartile score group, hazard ratios [95% confidence intervals] for the highest quartile score group = 1.59 [1.11-2.29] for males and 1.06 [0.66-1.70] for females). Among the DBD items, lack of interest in daily living, excessive daytime sleep, and refusal to receive care had a higher mortality risk. CONCLUSIONS The findings suggest a potential association between BPSD and poor prognosis among males with cognitive impairment.

Abstract
The behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) present complex challenges for nursing home (NH) nurses, leading to confusion and difficulties in providing effective care. To address these issues, investigating how NH nurses perceive and manage the BPSD is crucial since it can lead to the development of tailored and effective care plans. This study therefore aimed to explore the ways in which NH nurses approach the management of the BPSD by using phenomenography. The study identified five categories of assessment and four categories of intervention in managing the BPSD, with their hierarchical structure represented as an outcome space. Each category's description provides a clear conceptualization of the complex and challenging nature of the BPSD care, offering insights into how NH nurses perceive the BPSD management. The study's findings can enhance NH nurse education and lead to effective care plans for residents with BPSD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) are symptoms of non-cognitive nature, which frequently develop during the course and different stages of dementia. The diagnosis of BPSD is complex due to symptom variety, and relies on detailed clinical evaluation and medical history. Accurate assessment of BPSD is crucial in order to tailor therapeutic intervention (non-pharmacological and pharmacological) for each individual and monitor patient response to therapy. AREAS COVERED This review encompasses the epidemiology, classification, assessment and etiology of BPSD, as well as their impact on caregiver distress, and gives an overview of current and emerging non-pharmacological and pharmacological therapeutic options, as well as potential BPSD biomarkers, in order to provide a framework for improving BPSD diagnosis and developing novel, targeted and specific therapeutic strategies for BPSD. EXPERT OPINION Due to the large heterogeneity of BPSD and of the fact that drugs available only alleviate symptoms, finding an adequate treatment is very challenging and often involves a polytherapeutic approach. Non-pharmacologic interventions have shown promising results in improving BPSD, however further research is needed to confirm their beneficial effects. Thus, the modification of pre-existancing as well as the development of novel pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic solutions should be considered for BPSD therapy.

Abstract
Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is still not fully understood. Sex modifies AD vulnerability, but the reasons for this are largely unknown. We utilize two independent electronic medical record (EMR) systems across 44,288 patients to perform deep clinical phenotyping and network analysis to gain insight into clinical characteristics and sex-specific clinical associations in AD. Embeddings and network representation of patient diagnoses demonstrate greater comorbidity interactions in AD in comparison to matched controls. Enrichment analysis identifies multiple known and new diagnostic, medication, and lab result associations across the whole cohort and in a sex-stratified analysis. With this data-driven method of phenotyping, we can represent AD complexity and generate hypotheses of clinical factors that can be followed-up for further diagnostic and predictive analyses, mechanistic understanding, or drug repurposing and therapeutic approaches.

Abstract
The purpose of the current study was to describe gender differences in the quality of interactions between nursing home residents with behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia and staff. Data from the Evidence Integration Triangle for Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (EIT-4-BPSD) implementation study were used for the current study. A total of 535 residents (72% female and 28% male) from 55 settings were included in the analyses. The highest percentage of interactions occurred in dining rooms (38.4%) and with nursing staff (68%). There were no significant differences in the quality of staff interactions with male or female residents. Most interactions were positive social (n = 360, 71% males, 66% females), positive care (n = 312, 60% males, 58% females), or neutral (n = 123, 25% males, 22% females). There were 31 (7% males, 6% females) negative protective and 23 (3% male, 5% female) negative restrictive interactions. Future work should focus on eliminating neutral and negative interactions across both genders and address whether the gender of staff is related to the quality of staff-resident interaction. Abstract
BACKGROUND In March 2020, the World Health Organization declared a global pandemic due to the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and several governments planned a national quarantine in order to control the virus spread. Acute psychological effects of quarantine in frail elderly subjects with special needs, such as patients with dementia, have been poorly investigated. The aim of this study was to assess modifications of neuropsychiatric symptoms during quarantine in patients with dementia and their caregivers. METHODS This is a sub-study of a multicenter nation-wide survey. A structured telephone interview was delivered to family caregivers of patients with diagnosis of Alzheimer disease (AD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), frontotemporal dementia (FTD), and vascular dementia (VD), followed regularly at 87 Italian memory clinics. Variations in behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD) were collected after 1 month since quarantine declaration and associations with disease type, severity, gender, and caregiver's stress burden were analyzed. RESULTS A total of 4,913 caregivers participated in the survey. Increased BPSD was reported in 59.6% of patients as worsening of preexisting symptoms (51.9%) or as new onset (26%), and requested drug modifications in 27.6% of these cases. Irritability, apathy, agitation, and anxiety were the most frequently reported worsening symptoms and sleep disorder and irritability the most frequent new symptoms. Profile of BPSD varied according to dementia type, disease severity, and patients' gender. Anxiety and depression were associated with a diagnosis of AD (OR 1.35, CI: 1.12-1.62), mild to moderate disease severity and female gender. DLB was significantly associated with a higher risk of worsening hallucinations (OR 5.29, CI 3.66-7.64) and sleep disorder (OR 1.69, CI 1.25-2.29), FTD with wandering (OR 1.62, CI 1.12-2.35), and change of appetite (OR 1.52, CI 1.03-2.25). Stress-related symptoms were experienced by two-thirds of caregivers and were associated with increased patients' neuropsychiatric burden (p<0.0001). CONCLUSION Quarantine induces a rapid increase of BPSD in approximately 60% of patients and stress-related symptoms in two-thirds of caregivers. Health services need to plan a post-pandemic strategy in order to address these emerging needs.
