Abstract
Holographic data storage technology is a cost-effective solution for long-term archival data storage. However, the development of suitable holographic recording materials remains a challenge. Among these materials, phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) stands out due to its low cost and controllable thickness. Nevertheless, its limited photosensitivity and diffraction efficiency hinder its widespread application. In order to solve these problems, we put forward a kind of convenient and simple, low cost strategy, by adding plasticizer N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) for preparation of DMF-PQ/PMMA photopolymer, avoid the use of complex compounds. The addition of DMF not only influences the thermal polymerization stage but also forms weak interactions with PQ during the photoreaction process, thereby enhancing the holographic performance of DMF-PQ/PMMA. Consequently, we achieved a remarkable 9.1-fold increase in photosensitivity (from ∼0.35 to 3.18 cm J-1), improved diffraction efficiency by 20% (from 65% to 80%), and reduced volume shrinkage by a factor of 8 (from 0.4% to 0.05%). Furthermore, utilizing a collinear holographic storage system with multiplexing shift at a scale of 5 μm resulted in an impressively low minimum bit error rate (BER) of only 0.36% (with an average BER of 1.4%), highlighting the fast processing capability and potential for low BER applications in holographic information storage using DMF-PQ/PMMA.

Abstract
The low photosensitivity of phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) severely limits its recording speed for holographic data storage. A high-performance holographic recording medium based on a unique combination of N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) regulated PQ/PMMA has been developed. A NMP-PQ/PMMA photopolymer with high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency and negligible volume shrinkage was successfully fabricated by tuning the composition of the PMMA matrix by varying the ratio of NMP to monomers. The photosensitivity is increased by 6.9 times (from 0.27 cm J-1 to 1.86 cm J-1), the diffraction efficiency is increased from 60% to > 80%, and volume shrinkage is decreased by a factor of 2 (from 0.4% to 0.2%). Further investigation revealed that the addition of NMP significantly reduced the molecular weight of PMMA and increased the amount of MMA residuals, while also improving the solubility of PQ molecules. More interestingly, for the first time, the NMP-PQ/PMMA material could record data information repeatedly at least 6 times. The present study elucidates that the introduction of NMP not only modulates the molecular weight of PMMA but also enables the residual monomer MMA to more easily combine with PQ to form a photoproduct for improved holographic performance.

Abstract
Polarized holographic properties play an important role in the holographic data storage of traditional organic recording materials. In this study, reduced graphene oxide (RGO) was introduced into a phenanthraquinone-doped polymethylmethacrylate (PQ/PMMA) photopolymer to effectively improve the orthogonal polarization holographic properties of the material. Importantly, the lateral size of RGO nanosheets has an important influence on the polymerization of MMA monomers. To some extent, a larger RGO diameter is more conducive to promoting the polymerization of MMA monomers and can induce more PMMA polymers to be grafted on its surface, thus obtaining a higher PMMA molecular weight. However, too large of a RGO will lead to too much grafting of the PMMA chain to shorten the length of a single PMMA chain, which will lead to the degradation of PQ/PMMA holographic performance. Compared with the original PQ/PMMA, the diffraction efficiency of the RGO-doped PQ/PMMA photopolymer can reach more than 11.4% (more than 3.5 times higher than the original PQ/PMMA), and its photosensitivity is significantly improved by 4.6 times. This study successfully synthesized RGO-doped PQ/PMMA high-performance photopolymer functional materials for multi-dimensional holographic storage by introducing RGO nanoparticles. Furthermore, the polarization holographic properties of PQ/PMMA photopolymer materials can be further accurately improved to a new level.

Abstract
Photoanisotropic materials, in particular azodyes and azopolymers, have attracted significant research interest in the last decades. This is due to their applications in polarization holography and 4G optics, enabling polarization-selective diffractive optical elements with unique properties, including circular polarization beam-splitters, polarization-selective bifocal lenses, and many others. Numerous methods have been applied to increase the photoinduced birefringence of these materials, and as a result, to obtain polarization holographic elements with a high diffraction efficiency. Recently, a new approach has emerged that has been extensively studied by many research groups, namely doping azobenzene-containing materials with nanoparticles with various compositions, sizes, and morphologies. The resulting nanocomposites have shown significant enhancement in their photoanisotropic response, including increased photoinduced birefringence, leading to a higher diffraction efficiency and a larger surface relief modulation in the case of polarization holographic recordings. This review aims to cover the most important achievements in this new but fast-growing field of research and to present an extensive comparative analysis of the result, reported by many research groups during the last two decades. Different hypotheses to explain the mechanism of photoanisotropy enhancement in these nanocomposites are also discussed. Finally, we present our vision for the future development of this scientific field and outline its potential applications in advanced photonics technologies.

Abstract
Two-dimensional holographic structures based on photopolymer compositions with luminescent nanoparticles, such as quantum dots, are promising candidates for multiresponsive luminescence sensors. However, their applicability may suffer from the incompatibility of the components, and hence aggregation of the nanoparticles. We showed that the replacement of an organic shell at the CdSe/ZnS quantum dots' surface with monomer molecules of the photopolymerizable medium achieved full compatibility with the surrounding medium. The effect was demonstrated by luminescence spectroscopy, and steady-state and time-resolved luminescent laser scanning microscopy. We observed the complete spectral independence of local photoluminescence decay, thus proving the absence of even nanoscale aggregation, either in the liquid composition or in the nodes and antinodes of the grating. Therefore, nanostructured luminescent photopolymer gratings with monomer-covered quantum dots can act as hybrid diffractive-luminescent sensor elements.

Abstract
The insufficient photosensitivity of conventional organic recording materials such as phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) significantly limits the recording speed in holographic data storage. Accelerating the formation of free radicals using the photosensitizer PQ during the photoreaction process and increasing the C = C double bond concentration of the matrix are effective methods for improving the photosensitivity. Using the above methods, we doped PQ/PMMA with the co-photoinitiator triethanolamine and co-monomer acrylamide to improve the photosensitivity of the material. Compared with the original PQ/PMMA material, the photosensitivity was increased by 10 times, and the diffraction efficiency was increased by 20%. The role of each doping component was studied by characterization and analysis. In addition, the introduction of the cross-linking agent N,N'-methylene-bisacrylamide, having high sensitivity, reduced the shrinkage of the material. We verified the application of the new material in a collinear system, and its high sensitivity showed its great potential for holographic data storage.

Abstract
Herein, via introducing eight methacryl polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (Ma-POSS), we dramatically enhance the holographic performance of phenanthraquinone-doped poly(methyl methacrylate) (PQ/PMMA) photopolymer with excellent characteristics of high sensitivity, high diffraction efficiency, and neglectable volume shrinkage for holographic data storage, the photosensitivity, diffraction efficiency, and volume shrinkage reaching 1.47 cm/J, ∼75%, and ∼0.09%, respectively. Ma-POSS here dramatically enhances the photosensitivity ∼5.5 times, diffraction efficiency more than 50%, and suppressed the volume shrinkage over 4 times. Further analysis reveals that Ma-POSS obviously increased the molecular weight by grafting PMMA to be a star-shaped macromolecule. And the residual C═C of POSS-PMMA dramatically increased the photosensitivity. Moreover, the star-shaped POSS-PMMA acting as a plasticizer dramatically enhances the mechanical properties and so reduces the photoinduced volume shrinkage of PQ/PMMA. Finally, by the use of the POSS-PMMA/PQ in a collinear holography system, it appeared to be promising for a fast but low bit error rate in holographic information storage. The current study thence has not only successfully synthesized photopolymer materials with potential for highly sensitive holographic storage applications but also investigated the microphysical mechanism of the impact of Ma-POSS on the holographic properties of PQ/PMMA photopolymer and clarified the thermal- and photoreaction processes of the POSS-PMMA/PQ photopolymer.

Abstract
We experimentally demonstrate how to accurately retrieve the refractive index profile of photonic structures by standard diffraction experiments and use of the rigorous coupled-wave analysis in the multi-wave coupling regime, without the need for taking any auxiliary data. In particular, we show how the phases of the Fourier components of a periodic structure can be fully recovered by deliberately choosing a probe wavelength of the diffracting radiation much smaller than the lattice constant of the structure. In the course of our demonstration, we accurately determine the slight asymmetry of the structure of nanocomposite phase gratings by light and neutron diffraction measurements.

Abstract
A combination of acrylate formulations and SiO2 nanoparticles is investigated with the aim to improve the optical properties of low-refractive index polymers that are used for the fabrication of planar optical waveguides. A decrease in refractive index and also in the thermo-optic coefficient of nanocomposite materials is clearly demonstrated, while some formulations exhibit an increase in the glass transition temperature. The possibility of using these nanocomposite materials to fabricate waveguiding layers with low optical propagation losses at telecommunication wavelengths around 1550 nm is also shown. The nanomaterials can be applied in optical microchips on polymer platforms.

Abstract
Organic-inorganic photocurable nanocomposite materials are a topic of intensive research nowadays. The wide variety of materials and flexibility of their characteristics provide more freedom to design optical elements for light and neutron optics and holographic sensors. We propose a new strategy of nanocomposite application for fabricating resonant waveguide structures (RWS), whose working principle is based on optical waveguide resonance. Due to their resonant properties, RWS can be used as active tunable filters, refractive index (RI) sensors, near-field enhancers for spectroscopy, non-linear optics, etc. Our original photocurable organic-inorganic nanocomposite was used as a material for RWS. Unlike known waveguide structures with corrugated surfaces, we investigated the waveguide gratings with the volume modulation of the RI fabricated by a holographic method that enables large-size structures with high homogeneity. In order to produce thin photosensitive waveguide layers for their subsequent holographic structuring, a special compression method was developed. The resonant and sensing properties of new resonant structures were experimentally examined. The volume waveguide gratings demonstrate narrow resonant peaks with a bandwidth less than 0.012 nm. The Q-factor exceeds 50,000. The sensor based on waveguide volume grating provides detection of a minimal RI change of 1 × 10-4 RIU. Here we also present the new theoretical model that is used for analysis and design of developed RWS. Based on the proposed model, fairly simple analytical relationships between the parameters characterizing the sensor were obtained.

Abstract
Volume holographic phase gratings possessing the saturated refractive index modulation amplitudes as large as 4.5×10-2 were recorded at a wavelength of 532 nm in a photopolymerizable nanoparticle-polymer composite (NPC) film dispersed with ultrahigh refractive index hyperbranched-polymer (HBP) organic nanoparticles. This prominent result was achieved by a combination of the HBP nanoparticles with triazine and aromatic ring units and an electron donor/acceptor photo-initiator system doped in an acrylate monomer blend with low viscosity. As a result, efficient mutual diffusion of HBP nanoparticles and monomer having their very large refractive index difference took place. Obtained results suggest a potentiality of our newly developed HBP-dispersed NPC gratings as efficient volume holographic optical elements for various photonic applications including wearable headsets for augmented and mixed reality.

Abstract
We report a new polymer/colloidal-quantum-dot (CQD) film with a nanostructured interface, which is fabricated through a template-assisted photopolymerization method, toward the use of amplified spontaneous emission. It is experimentally demonstrated that the amplified spontaneous emission of CQDs is able to be manipulated by changing the nanostructured polymeric interface with a weak scattering ability. The dependences of emission wavelength and threshold on the size of the nanostructure and CQD layer thickness are investigated.

Abstract
Nanocomposites based on transparent polymer matrices containing nanoparticles (NPs) of noble metals are modern-day materials that can be specially designed for photonics, linear and nonlinear optics, laser physics and sensing applications. We present the improved photosensitive nanocomposites doped with Au and Ag NPs allowing fabrication of high effective submicrometer dimensional diffraction structures using holographic method. A general approach for the fabrication of holographic structures using a two-component mixture of the monomers of different reactivity was developed. Two different methods, ex situ and in situ, were studied to introduce Au and Ag NPs in the polymer matrix. The diffusion model of the grating formation upon holographic exposure as well as the process of Ag NP synthesis in a polymer matrix is considered. The influence of the NP size on the polymerization process, material dynamic range and nonlinear properties were investigated. The mechanisms and characteristics of the nanocomposite nonlinear optical response are discussed.

Abstract
The possibility of the application of acrylate compositions and Bayfol HX photopolymers in holographic technologies is considered. The holographic characteristics of materials, their advantages, and limitations in relation to the tasks of obtaining holographic elements based on periodic structures are given. The conditions for obtaining controlled two and multichannel diffraction beam splitters are determined with advantages in terms of the simplicity of the fabrication process. The diffraction and selective properties of volume and hybrid periodic structures by radiation incidence in a wide range of angles in three-dimensional space are investigated, and new properties are identified that are of interest for the development of elements of holographic solar concentrators with advantages in the material used and the range of incidence angles. A new application of polymer materials in a new method of holographic 3D printing for polymer objects with arbitrary shape fabrication based on the projection of a holographic image of the object into the volume of photopolymerizable material is proposed, the advantage of which, relative to additive 3D printing technologies, is the elimination of the sequential synthesis of a three-dimensional object. The factors determining the requirements for the material, fabrication conditions, and properties of three-dimensional objects are identified and investigated.

Abstract
Additive manufacturing at the macroscale has become a hot topic of research in recent years. It has been used by engineers for rapid prototyping and low-volume production. The development of such technologies at the nanoscale, or additive nanomanufacturing, will provide a future path for new nanotechnology applications. In this review article, we introduce several available toolboxes that can be potentially used for additive nanomanufacturing. We especially focus on laser-based additive nanomanufacturing under ambient conditions.

Abstract
We investigate the applicability of polymer-ionic liquid composites as optical elements for light, as well as for slow neutrons. The gratings are recorded using two-beam mixing and are characterized experimentally based on their diffraction properties. We produced a set of samples differing in their thickness, ranging from 10 μm–100 μm. We demonstrate that it is possible to prepare transmission gratings with a lattice constant of Λ=480 nm, resulting in thick gratings for light, as well as neutrons. The presented samples show low optical losses in the Vis-UV spectrum and exhibit refractive index modulations of about 10−3 at λ=543 nm. However, further improvements have to be made to obtain efficient neutron optical components.

Abstract
A holographic polymer dispersed liquid crystal (HPDLC) is used to record holographic diffraction gratings. Several mixtures of nematic liquid crystals (LC) are used as components of the HPDLC to evaluate their influence in static and dynamic basic properties. The diffraction efficiency obtained in the reconstruction of the holograms is evaluated to compare the influence of the different LC. Additionally, the samples are exposed to a variable electric field and the diffracted light intensity as a function of the applied voltage is measured to evaluate the influence of the LC. The results obtained show significant differences depending on the LC incorporated to the photopolymer.

Abstract
We study the behavior of a nanoparticle-polymer composite (NPC) material, based on a thiol-ene monomer system, working with long grating spacing. Thus, we evaluate the suitability of the NPC for storing complex diffractive optical elements with sharp profiles, such as blazed gratings. Using holographic methods, we measure the "apparent" diffusion of the material and the influence of the spatial period on this diffusion. The applicability of this material in complex diffractive optical elements (DOEs) recording is analyzed using an interferometric method. Supported by the results of this analysis, we record blazed gratings with different grating spacing and measure the maximum diffraction efficiency (DE) achieved. The results show that NPC has a good behavior in this range of spatial frequencies.

Abstract
The paper presents formation processes and diffraction properties of hybrid periodic structures such as volume gratings with refractive index modulation, on the surface of which relief gratings are formed. It is shown experimentally that relief gratings with significant diffraction properties in used photopolymer materials are formed in a narrow range of exposure parameters. It is established that the formation of a relief grating on the surface of a volume grating leads to significant changes in the selective properties of structures. We also consider possible applications of hybrid structures.

Abstract
We report the fabrication of large-area holographic diffraction gratings on a curved surface from transferred photopolymer films by introducing a water-soluble interlayer. The holographic gratings on a curved surface have a diffraction efficiency of ∼63%, which is ∼80% of the recorded holographic film on a flat surface. By transferring a recorded holographic grating to a flat substrate, we obtained rainbow holographic gratings under white light illumination. This can be explained by the deformation of the holographic gratings. Our result provides a low-cost method for fabricating diffraction optical elements on a curved surface for optical systems.

Abstract
A detailed investigation of the recording, as well as the readout of transmission gratings in composites of poly(ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate (PEGDMA) and ionic liquids is presented. Gratings with a period of about 5.8 micrometers were recorded using a two-wave mixing technique with a coherent laser beam of a 355-nm wavelength. A series of samples with grating thicknesses d0=10…150 micrometers, each for two different exposure times, was prepared. The recording kinetics, as well as the post-exposure properties of the gratings were monitored by diffracting a low intensity probe beam at a wavelength of 633 nm for Bragg incidence. To obtain a complete characterization, two-beam coupling experiments were conducted to clarify the type and the strength of the recorded gratings. Finally, the diffraction efficiency was measured as a function of the readout angle at different post-exposure times. We found that, depending on the parameters, different grating types (pure phase and/or mixed) are generated, and at elevated thicknesses, strong light-induced scattering develops. The measured angular dependence of the diffraction efficiency can be fitted using a five-wave coupling theory assuming an attenuation of the gratings along the thickness. For grating thicknesses larger than 85 microns, light-induced scattering becomes increasingly important. The latter is an obstacle for recording thicker holograms, as it destroys the recording interference pattern with increasing sample depth. The obtained results are valuable in particular when considering PEGDMA-ionic liquid composites in the synthesis of advanced polymer composites for applications, such as biomaterials, conductive polymers and holographic storage materials.

Abstract
A novel composition for a low-toxicity, water-soluble, holographic photopolymer capable of recording bright reflection gratings with diffraction efficiency of up to 50% is reported. The unique combination of two chemical components, namely, a chain transfer agent and a free radical scavenger, is reported to enhance the holographic recording ability of a diacetone acrylamide (DA)-based photopolymer in reflection mode by 3-fold. Characterization of the dependence of diffraction efficiency of the reflection gratings on spatial frequency, recording intensity, exposure energy, and recording wavelength has been carried out for the new low-toxicity material. The use of UV postexposure as a method of improving the stability of the photopolymer-based reflection holograms is reported. The ability of the modified DA photopolymer to record bright Denisyuk holograms which are viewable in different lighting conditions is demonstrated.
