Abstract
Trace elements are essential for maintaining the body's homeostasis, and their special role has been demonstrated in skin physiology. Among the most important trace elements are zinc, copper, and iron. A deficiency or excess of trace elements can be associated with an increased risk of skin diseases, so increasing their supplementation or limiting intake can be helpful in dermatological treatment. In addition, determinations of their levels in various types of biological material can be useful as additional tests in dermatological treatment. This paper describes the role of these elements in skin physiology and summarizes data on zinc, copper, and iron in the course of selected, following skin diseases: psoriasis, pemphigus vulgaris, atopic dermatitis, acne vulgaris and seborrheic dermatitis. In addition, this work identifies the potential of trace elements as auxiliary tests in dermatology. According to preliminary studies, abnormal levels of zinc, copper, and iron are observed in many skin diseases and their determinations in serum or hair can be used as auxiliary and prognostic tests in the course of various dermatoses. However, since data for some conditions are conflicting, clearly defining the potential of trace elements as auxiliary tests or elements requiring restriction/supplement requires further research.

Abstract
Background Zinc plays a crucial role in human nutrition and various biochemical processes, making it indispensable for all life forms. Therefore, it is important to address low zinc levels, particularly among women, to prevent potential health issues. Objective This study aimed to evaluate the serum zinc levels of female patients in Sulaymaniyah, Iraq. Methods This retrospective cross-sectional study included a total of 299 patients, ranging in age from 16 to 48 years, who sought medical care at Baxshin Hospital in Sulaymaniyah Governorate, Iraq, between October 2022 and April 2023. The biochemical test was conducted to screen the patient's blood samples for serum zinc levels. Results Among 299 patients, 99 individuals had low zinc levels, 11 had high zinc levels, and 189 exhibited normal zinc levels. The analysis revealed a significant difference between low, normal, and high serum zinc levels, as evidenced by a p-value of <0.05. In terms of age-related variations, individuals under 20 years old had an average serum zinc level of 121.4 µg/dL. However, those between 21 and 30 years old demonstrated the highest average serum zinc level of 153.6 µg/dL, followed by 135 µg/dL for individuals aged 31-40, and 119 µg/dL for those above 40 years old. Conclusion These findings indicate that serum zinc levels may vary based on the age group of individuals. Consequently, further research is needed to explore the implications of these variations and establish appropriate strategies to address zinc deficiency among women in Sulaymaniyah.

Multi-Ingredient Supplement Supports Mitochondrial Health through Interleukin-15 Signaling in Older Adult Human Dermal Fibroblasts. COSMETICS 2022. Abstract
The macroscopic and microscopic deterioration of human skin with age is, in part, attributed to a functional decline in mitochondrial health. We previously demonstrated that exercise attenuated age-associated changes within the skin through enhanced mitochondrial health via IL-15 signaling, an exercise-induced cytokine whose presence increases in circulation following physical activity. The purpose of this investigation was to determine if these mitochondrial-enhancing effects could be mimicked with the provision of a novel multi-ingredient supplement (MIS). Cultured human fibroblasts isolated from older, sedentary women were treated with control media (CON) or CON supplemented with the following active ingredients to create the MIS: coenzyme Q10, alpha lipoic acid, resveratrol, curcumin, zinc, lutein, astaxanthin, copper, biotin, and vitamins C, D, and E. Outcomes were determined following 24 or 72 h of treatment. MIS provision to dermal fibroblasts significantly increased the mRNA abundance of mitochondrial biogenesis activators and downstream IL-15 signaling pathways, and proteins for oxidative phosphorylation subunits and antioxidant defenses. These findings were co-temporal with lower cellular senescence and cytotoxicity following MIS treatment. In summary, MIS supplementation led to exercise-mimetic effects on human dermal fibroblasts and their mitochondria by reproducing the molecular and biochemical effects downstream of IL-15 activation.

Abstract
Zinc can play a pathophysiological role in several diseases and can interfere in key processes of microbial growth. This evidence justifies the efforts in applying Zinc ionophores to restore Zinc homeostasis and treat bacterial/viral infections such as coronavirus diseases. Zinc ionophores increase the intracellular concentration of Zinc ions causing significant biological effects. This review provides, for the first time, an overview of the applications of the main Zinc ionophores in Zinc deficiency, infectious diseases, and in cancer, discussing the pharmacological and coordination properties of the Zinc ionophores.

Abstract
Zinc compounds have a number of beneficial properties for the skin, including antimicrobial, sebostatic and demulcent activities. The aim of the study was to develop new anti-acne preparations containing zinc–amino acid complexes as active ingredients. Firstly, the cytotoxicity of the zinc complexes was evaluated against human skin fibroblasts (1BR.3.N cell line) and human epidermal keratinocyte cell lines, and their antimicrobial activity was determined against Cutibacterium acnes. Then, zinc complexes of glycine and histidine were selected to create original gel formulations. The stability (by measuring pH, density and viscosity), microbiological purity (referring to PN-EN ISO standards) and efficacy of the preservative system (according to Ph. Eur. 10 methodology) for the preparations were evaluated. Skin tolerance was determined in a group of 25 healthy volunteers by the patch test. The preparations containing zinc(II) complexes with glycine and histidine as active substances can be topically used in the treatment of acne skin due to their high antibacterial activity against C. acnes and low cytotoxicity for the skin cells. Dermatological recipes have been appropriately composed; no irritation or allergy was observed, and the preparations showed high microbiological purity and physicochemical stability.

Abstract
Human skin is continually changing. The condition of the skin largely depends on the individual’s overall state of health. A balanced diet plays an important role in the proper functioning of the human body, including the skin. The present study draws attention to bioactive substances, i.e., vitamins, minerals, fatty acids, polyphenols, and carotenoids, with a particular focus on their effects on the condition of the skin. The aim of the study was to review the literature on the effects of bioactive substances on skin parameters such as elasticity, firmness, wrinkles, senile dryness, hydration and color, and to define their role in the process of skin ageing.

Abstract
Zinc as therapeutic agent in skin and wound care has been known for centuries, but its role is controversial and comprehensive investigations in nutrient-deficient environments are lacking. We aimed to provide a broad analysis of different zinc derivatives on proliferation, apoptosis and antimicrobial properties in a simulated nutrient-deficient environment in vitro. Human fibroblasts (CRL2522) and keratinocytes (HaCaT) were treated with a broad concentration range (10 – 0.0001 µg/mL) of zinc-sulfate (ZnSO4), -gluconate (ZnGluc) and -histidine (ZnHis) for 1-6 days under nutrient-deficient media conditions. Cell proliferation was investigated by XTT assay. Targeted analyzes in proliferation (E2F1, PCNA) and apoptosis (TP53) associated genes were performed via qRT-PCR and apoptosis was determined via FACS (annexin V/7-AAD staining). Antimicrobial efficacy was investigated using a quantitative suspension method against S. aureus, P. aeruginosa, E. coli, and C. albicans. The results indicated that 0.1 to 0.001 µg/mL Zn increased cell proliferation in both cell lines. Fibroblasts were more susceptible with significant proliferation peaks on days 2 & 6, and days 1 & 4 for keratinocytes. No relevant changes in gene expression were detected for E2F1 and PCNA nor for TP53. Annexin-V/7-AAD-staining of fibroblasts revealed a small, yet insignificant reduction of apoptosis induction for ZnGluc and ZnSO4. ZnGluc and ZnSO4 (0.1%) achieved high microbial reductions (4-5 log10 reductions) against tested pathogens. ZnGluc and ZnSO4 showed relevant pro-proliferative and antimicrobial, as well as tendential anti-apoptotic features in a simulated nutrient-deficient microenvironment in vitro. This further validates a potential benefit of local zinc treatment in deficient wound microenvironments.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recurrent aphthous stomatitis (RAS) is a common lesion that affects the oral mucosa. There are several methods to treat RAS, including systemic and topical formulations. This study was conducted to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of topical zinc sulfate and its efficacy in the treatment of RAS. METHODS A double-blind randomized clinical trial was conducted on 46 patients with RAS. They were randomly assigned into two groups to receive a zinc sulfate mucoadhesive tablet or placebo for 7 days. The pain severity was measured at baseline and daily while the diameter of the lesion was measured at baseline and on days 3, 5, and 7. The obtained data were analyzed in SPSS V.16. RESULTS There was no significant difference in the mean diameter of lesions and pain at baseline between the two groups (P = 0.643 and P = 0.842, respectively). However, on the third, fifth, and seventh days of the study, the diameter of the lesion significantly reduced in the intervention group (P = 0.001) and the pain intensity became significantly different between groups from the fourth day of the study (P = 0.001). CONCLUSION Zinc sulfate mucoadhesive tablet was effective in recovery and reducing the pain and diameter of the aphthous lesion and could be considered for the treatment of RAS. Abstract
This study aimed to analyze the association between serum zinc levels and major subjective symptoms in zinc deficiency patients with chronic liver disease. 578 patients with chronic liver disease were enrolled. The patients, whose serum zinc level of <80 µg/dl, completed a questionnaire to determine whether they had subjective symptoms of the five conditions (taste disorder, aphthous stomatitis, dermatitis, alopecia, and anorexia). Then, the association between these subjective symptoms and serum zinc levels was analyzed. In total, 193 patients (33.4%) experienced any subjective symptoms. The prevalence of each symptom was as follows: 36 patients with taste disorder (6.2%), 46 with aphthous stomatitis (8.0%), 77 with dermatitis (13.3%), 46 with alopecia (8.0%), and 53 with anorexia (9.2%). In total, 70.8%, 34.1%, and 26.1% patients with serum zinc levels of <40, ≥40 to <60, and ≥60 to <80 µg/dl, respectively, had these symptoms. When zinc deficiency was defined as a serum zinc level of <80 µg/dl, approximately one-third of patients displayed symptoms presumably originating from zinc deficiency. As serum zinc levels decreased, the prevalence of these symptoms increased. Dermatitis, especially, was relevant to zinc.

Abstract
It is well-known that zinc ions are widely used in cosmetic products. Their popularity is associated with the multifunctional profile of Zn2+ , which is classified as an essential chemical element in the human body. This review examines numerous beneficial biological properties of zinc-containing compounds and classifies the compounds used in cosmetic products according to their functionality profile: antioxidant, sunscreen, anti-inflammatory, anti-pigmentation, anti-ageing, anti-acne, antimicrobial, anti-odour, cleansing or stabilizing activity. It also underlines the significance of zinc in enzymatic processes, which depends on the enzyme type acts as inhibitor or enzymatic stimulator. Moreover, the article describes the chemical nature of the most interesting groups of Zn compounds.

Abstract
Zinc pyrithione (ZP) is commonly used to prevent dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis. Many consumers are exposed daily to high doses of ZP, causing serious concerns about its toxicity. The reproductive and developmental toxicities were previously reported in pregnant rats. However, the estrogenic activity of ZP at varying degrees of exposure has been rarely studied. Thus, we performed an uterotrophic assay, E-screen assay, and gene expression profiling to assess the estrogenic activity of ZP. For the uterotrophic assay, ZP (2, 10, or 50 mg/kg/d) was subcutaneously administered to ovariectomized rats every day for three days. Uteri were extracted 24 hours after the last dose. Then, wet and blotted uterine weights were measured. For the E-screen essay, MCF-7 cells (a breast cancer cell line) were exposed to 10-9 to 10-6 M of ZP, and cell proliferation was then measured. For the gene expression analysis, changes of gene expression levels in uterine samples taken for the uterotrophic assay were analyzed. In the uterotrophic assay, the concentration of ZP had no significant effect on uterine weight. In the E-screen assay, ZP at any concentration showed no significant increase in MCF-7 cell proliferation, compared to the control group. However, 10-6 M of ZP significantly reduced cell viability. The changes in gene expression slightly differed between the ZP and control groups. The in vivo and in vitro assays, together with gene expression analysis, demonstrated that ZP showed no significant estrogenic activity.

Abstract
Zinc, both in elemental or in its salt forms, has been used as a therapeutic modality for centuries. Topical preparations like zinc oxide, calamine, or zinc pyrithione have been in use as photoprotecting, soothing agents or as active ingredient of antidandruff shampoos. Its use has expanded manifold over the years for a number of dermatological conditions including infections (leishmaniasis, warts), inflammatory dermatoses (acne vulgaris, rosacea), pigmentary disorders (melasma), and neoplasias (basal cell carcinoma). Although the role of oral zinc is well-established in human zinc deficiency syndromes including acrodermatitis enteropathica, it is only in recent years that importance of zinc as a micronutrient essential for infant growth and development has been recognized. The paper reviews various dermatological uses of zinc.

The review also describes skin diseases that may be treated with the use ot zinc preparations on a grounded basis, and discloses the clinical experience ot the use ot these drugs described in the world literature. It sets out certain recommendations tor using zinc preparations in clinical practice.

Abstract
Zinc is an essential trace element required for normal cell growth, development, and differentiation. It is involved in DNA synthesis, RNA transcription, and cell division and activation. It is a critical component in many zinc protein/enzymes, including critical zinc transcription factors. Zinc deficiency/altered metabolism is observed in many types of liver disease, including alcoholic liver disease (ALD) and viral liver disease. Some of the mechanisms for zinc deficiency/altered metabolism include decreased dietary intake, increased urinary excretion, activation of certain zinc transporters, and induction of hepatic metallothionein. Zinc deficiency may manifest itself in many ways in liver disease, including skin lesions, poor wound healing/liver regeneration, altered mental status, or altered immune function. Zinc supplementation has been documented to block/attenuate experimental ALD through multiple processes, including stabilization of gut-barrier function, decreasing endotoxemia, decreasing proinflammatory cytokine production, decreasing oxidative stress, and attenuating apoptotic hepatocyte death. Clinical trials in human liver disease are limited in size and quality, but it is clear that zinc supplementation reverses clinical signs of zinc deficiency in patients with liver disease. Some studies suggest improvement in liver function in both ALD and hepatitis C following zinc supplementation, and 1 study suggested improved fibrosis markers in hepatitis C patients. The dose of zinc used for treatment of liver disease is usually 50 mg of elemental zinc taken with a meal to decrease the potential side effect of nausea.

Abstract
Vitiligo is a common depigmenting skin disorder (prevalence 0.1-2%), still represents a cause of stigmatization and quality of life impairment in a large population. Several theories on vitiligo etiopathogenesis have been suggested including in trauma, stress, and autoimmune and genetic predisposition, accumulation of toxic compounds, altered cellular environment, imbalance in the oxidant-antioxidant system, impaired melanocyte migration and/or proliferation, infection, and psychological factors. Zinc, as a trace element, has many vital functions in human. It is antiapoptotic factor and needed as a cofactor for antioxidant defense system. It plays an important role in the process of melanogenesis. It may be effective in prevention and treatment of vitiligo via some mechanism. Herein, we suggested some probable protective mechanism for zinc in association with vitiligo.

Abstract
Severe zinc deficiency states, such as acrodermatitis enteropathica, are associated with a variety of skin manifestations, such as perioral, acral, and perineal dermatitis. These syndromes can be reversed with systemic zinc repletion. In addition to skin pathologies that are clearly zinc-dependent, many dermatologic conditions (eg, dandruff, acne, and diaper rash) have been associated and treated with zinc. Success rates for treatment with zinc vary greatly depending on the disease, mode of administration, and precise zinc preparation used. With the exception of systemic zinc deficiency states, there is little evidence that convincingly demonstrates the efficacy of zinc as a reliable first-line treatment for most dermatologic conditions. However, zinc may be considered as an adjunctive treatment modality. Further research is needed to establish the indications for zinc treatment in dermatology, optimal mode of zinc delivery, and best type of zinc compound to be used.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diaper dermatitis (DD) is the most common type of irritative dermatitis in infancy. It is frequently complicated by Candida superinfection. OBJECTIVE Comparison of efficacy and safety of two antifungal pastes (Imazol = 1% clotrimazole; Multilind = 100,000 IU nystatin/g + 20% zinc oxide) in infants with DD. METHODS A total of 96 infants were included in this multi-centre, controlled, randomized, evaluator-blinded phase IV trial and treated with pastes containing either clotrimazole (n = 45) or nystatin (n = 46) twice daily for 14 days. In all, 91 children (age 12.1 +/- 5.3 months; 48 females) with DD were evaluable. Total symptom score after 7 days (TSS7) was assessed as primary parameter. Secondary efficacy parameters were TSS at 14 days (TSS14), clinical and microbiological cure rates and global assessment (GA) of clinical response. RESULTS TSS improved markedly with both pastes. Decreases in symptom score were 4.5 +/- 2.1 (day 7) and 6.1 +/- 1.9 (day 14) with clotrimazole compared with 4.2 +/- 2.3 and 5.4 +/- 2.4 with nystatin (P < 0.0001). With respect to TSS14, clotrimazole was superior to nystatin (P = 0.0434). Clinical cure rate was higher with clotrimazole [36.2% (day 7) and 68.1% (day 14)] compared with 28.6% and 46.9% (nystatin). GA was very good in 26 (55.3%) clotrimazole-treated children (nystatin: 16 [32.7%], P = 0.0257). Frequency of adverse events was comparable in both treatment groups. CONCLUSION Clotrimazole was superior to nystatin with respect to reduction in symptom score and GA. Microbiological cure rate was 100% for both agents. Both treatments were safe and well-tolerated.

Abstract
Incontinence-associated dermatitis (IAD), sometimes referred to as perineal dermatitis, is an inflammation of the skin associated with exposure to urine or stool. Elderly adults, and especially those in long-term care facilities, are at risk for urinary or fecal incontinence and IAD. Traditionally, IAD has received little attention as a distinct disorder, and it is sometimes confused with stage I or II pressure ulcers. However, a modest but growing body of research is beginning to provide insights into the epidemiology, etiology, and pathophysiology of IAD. In addition, recent changes in reimbursement policies from the US Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services regarding pressure ulcer prevention has focused attention on the differential diagnosis of IAD versus pressure ulcer, and its influence on pressure ulcer risk. Color, location, depth, and the presence or absence of necrotic tissue are visual indicators used to differentiate IAD from pressure-related skin damage. Prevention is based on avoiding or minimizing exposure to stool or urine combined with a structured skin-care program based on principles of gentle cleansing, moisturization, preferably with an emollient, and application of a skin protectant. Treatment of IAD focuses on three main goals: (i) removal of irritants from the affected skin; (ii) eradication of cutaneous infections such as candidiasis; and (iii) containment or diversion of incontinent urine or stool.

Abstract
Valproic acid (VPA) is frequently used as an antiepileptic drug. Several side effects are known. We report on a child with onychomadesis as a possible side-effect of treatment with VPA. Normal nail growth was observed after stopping VPA. The pathomechanism of onychomadesis due to VPA treatment remains unclear.
