Multifarious extraction methodologies for ameliorating lipid recovery from algae

Amongst the current alternatives, algae were proven to be a promising source of biofuel, which is renewable and capable of meeting world demand for transportation fuels. However, a suitable lipid extraction method that efficiently releases the lipids from different algal strains remains a bottleneck. The multifarious pretreatment methods are prevalent in this field of lipid extraction, and therefore, this article has critically reviewed the various lipid extraction methods for ameliorating the lipid yield from algae, irrespective of the strains/species. Physical, mechanical, and chemical are the different types of pretreatment methods. In this review, methodologies such as homogenization, sonication, Soxhlet extraction, microwave treatment, and bead-beating, have been studied in detail and are the most commonly used methods for lipid extraction. Specific advanced/emerging processes such as supercritical CO₂ extraction, ionic liquid, and CO₂ switchable solvent-based algal lipid extraction are yet to be demonstrated at pilot-scale, though promising. The extraction of lipids has to be financially conducive, environmentally sustainable, and industrially applicable for further conversion into biodiesel. Hence, this paper discusses variable pretreatment for lipid extraction and imparts a comparative analysis to elect an efficient, economically sound lipid extraction method for pilot-scale biodiesel production.

Coupled microalgal cultivation with the treatment of domestic sewage and high-level CO2

The ability of Scenedesmus quadricauda SDEC-13 to accumulate biomass and remove nutrients in domestic sewage from campus when incorporated with 15% CO₂ was explored. The maximum specific growth rate, biomass productivity, biomass concentration, and CO₂ fixation rate were 0.14 d^-1, 0.08 g/L/d, 0.69 g/L, and 0.076 g-CO₂/L/d, respectively. The lipid content of SDEC-13 at different culture phases was also evaluated and it increased following nutrient limitation. The removal efficiencies of total nitrogen, total phosphorus, nitrate, and ammonium were all above 90%. A coupled system was designed with hydraulic retention time of 8.33 d and biomass harvest ratio of 12%, which could yield 0.54 g/L biomass and 25% lipid content with efficient domestic sewage treatment.

Effect of high-temperature stress on microalgae at the end of the logarithmic phase for the efficient production of lipid

Efficient production of microalgae lipid is significant for the production of renewable biodiesel. In the present study, the high temperature of 40°C as stress environment was tested for stimulating lipid accumulation after the microalgae (Scenedesmus quadricauda) cells in suitable conditions grew to the end of the logarithmic phase. Different stress cultivation times of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 days were studied. Interestingly, the lipid content and productivity reached 33.5% and 23.2 mg/L d after one day stress cultivation, showing substantial improvements of 39.6% and 33.3% compared with that in the untreated (day 0) microalgae cells, respectively. Longer stress time led to the decrease of biomass and lipid content compared with the untreated microalgae. However, a maximum protein content of 58.7% was obtained after six days. The stress cultivation at the end of the microalgae exponential phase for one day at a high temperature of 40°C could be a very useful industrial approach for efficiently promoting lipid content and biodiesel production.

Mutual facilitations of food waste treatment, microbial fuel cell bioelectricity generation and Chlorella vulgaris lipid production

Food waste contains large amount of organic matter that may be troublesome for handing, storage and transportation. A microbial fuel cell (MFC) was successfully constructed with different inoculum densities of Chlorella vulgaris for promoting food waste treatment. Maximum COD removal efficiency was registered with 44% and 25 g CODL(-1)d(-1) of substrate degradation rate when inoculated with the optimal initial density (150 mg L(-1)) of C. vulgaris, which were 2.9 times and 3.1 times higher than that of the abiotic cathode. With the optimum inoculum density of C. vulgaris, the highest open circuit voltage, working voltage and power density of MFC were 260 mV, 170 mV and 19151 mW m(-3), respectively. Besides the high biodiesel quality, promoted by MFC stimulation the biomass productivity and highest total lipid content of C. vulgaris were 207 mg L(-1)d(-1) and 31%, which were roughly 2.7 times and 1.2 times higher than the control group.
