Synthesis of silver sulfide modified carbon materials for adsorptive removal of dibenzothiophene in n-hexane

Designing an efficient organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite for simultaneous oxidative/adsorptive desulfurization of model and real fuel oils

In this study, an efficient organic-inorganic hybrid nanocomposite was designed for deep oxidative/adsorptive removal of dibenzothiophene (DBT) from model and real fuel oils employing surface molecularly imprinted polymer (SMIP) and mesoporous silica nanoparticles (MSNs). On the surface of silanol-functionalized MCM-48-HPW prepared at different 12-tungstophosphoric acid (HPW wt%) as the oxidation catalyst, an imprinted polymethacrylic acid polymer (PMAA) as a selective adsorbent of DBT was formed using different amounts of DBT template. Then, various oxidant/sulfur molar ratios were applied during the desulfurization reactions according to the central composite design (CCD). The successful synthesis of the optimum SMIP-PMAA@MCM-48-HPW nanocomposite was confirmed by FTIR, XRD, N2-adsorption, SEM, TEM, TGA, and NMR techniques. The desulfurization percentage of the model oil reached 98.54% under the optimum conditions, and the catalyst percentage was found to be the most significant parameter for desulfurization efficiency. Comparison experiments showed that the combined role of oxidation and adsorption had an extensive impact on desulfurization efficiency. Under the optimized conditions, 96% DBT from gasoline was removed by the optimum nanocomposite. The optimum nanocomposite showed good stability and could be reused five times without a remarkable decrease in the desulfurization ability.

Preparation of formate-free PMA@MOF-808 catalysts for deep oxidative desulfurization of model fuels

Due to the increasingly serious environmental problems caused by the combustion of sulfides in fuel, deep desulfurization of fuel became particularly urgent. Herein, the catalyst (PMA@MOF-808) of the Zr-based metal-organic framework (MOF-808) encapsulating phosphomolybdic acid (PMA) was prepared via a one-pot hydrothermal method. Besides, the formate ions of PMA@MOF-808 were removed by posttreatment with methanol, resulting in formate-free PMA@MOF-808-H catalysts with unsaturated open metal sites. The as-synthesized catalysts were systematically characterized by XRD, FT-IR, SEM, BET, TGA, ¹H NMR and XPS. The catalysts were also applied in catalytic oxidation desulfurization of fuel. The results indicated that the introduction of PMA and the removal of formate ions can improve the desulfurization performance of catalysts. Formate-free 0.2-PMA@MOF-808-H catalyst can reach 100% desulfurization rate for DBT. Besides, the kinetic properties were studied, and the apparent activation energy was 29.34 kJ/mol.

Phycosynthesis and Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of Zinc Oxide Nanoparticles Toward Organosulfur Pollutants

A novel eco-friendly procedure was developed to produce safer, stable and highly pure zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) using microalgae Chlorella extract. The ZnO NPs were synthesized simply using zinc nitrate and microalgae Chlorella extract which conducted at ambient conditions. In this recipe, microalgae Chlorella extract acted as the reducing agent and a stabilizing layer on fresh ZnO NPs. UV–visible spectrum was confirmed the formation of ZnO NPs showing an absorption peak at 362 nm. XRD results demonstrated that prepared ZnO NPs has a high-crystalline hexagonal (Wurtzite) structure, with average size about 19.44 nm in diameter. FT-IR spectral analysis indicated an active contribution of algae-derived biomolecules in zinc ions bioreduction. According to SEM and TEM observations, ZnO NPs are well dispersed and has a hexagonal shape with the average size of 20 ± 2.2 nm, respectively. Based on gas chromatography analyses, the optimum 0.01 g/L dosage of ZnO catalyst revealed an effective photocatalytic activity toward the degradation (97%) of Dibenzothiophene (DBT) contaminant as an organosulfur model in the neutral pH at the mild condition. Rapid separation and facile recyclability at five consecutive runs were demonstrated high efficiency and durability of green ZnO nanophotocatalyst. The possible mechanisms of green ZnO NPs formation and the photo-desulfurization of DBT were also proposed.

Carbon Nanomaterials for the Adsorptive Desulfurization of Fuels

The increasing demand for cleaner fuels and the recent stringent regulations of commercial fuel specifications have driven the research of alternative methods to upgrade the current industrial desulfurization technology. Adsorptive desulfurization, the removal of refractory sulfur compounds using appropriate selective tailor-made adsorbents, has shown up as a promising alternative in the recent years. Carbon nanomaterials, namely, graphene, graphene oxide, carbon nanotubes and carbon nanofibers, show a significant potential as desulfurization adsorbents. Their surface area and porosity, their ability of easy functionalization, and their suitability to serve as a support of different types of adsorbents have rendered them attractive candidates for this purpose. In this review, after a presentation of the current industrial desulfurization practice and its limitations, the structure and properties of the carbon nanomaterials of interest will be described, followed by a detailed account of their applications in adsorptive desulfurization. The major literature findings and conclusions will be presented and discussed as a road map for future research in the field.
