Remediation of anionic dye from aqueous system using bio-adsorbent prepared by microwave activation

Investigation of two new low-cost adsorbents functionalized with magnetic nanoparticles for the efficient removal of triclosan and a synthetic mixture

Triclosan (TCS) is widely used in the production of antibacterial products, being often found in wastewater. Therefore, this study developed new materials via soybean hulls (SBH_F) and açaí seeds (AÇS_F) functionalization with iron oxide nanoparticles to be applied in the TCS adsorption. The characterization confirmed the functionalization of the materials. The adsorption results indicated that the equilibrium of the process occurred after 480 and 960 min for SBH_F and AÇS_F, respectively. The maximum adsorptive capacity values were 158.35 and 155.09 mg g^-1 for SBH_F and AÇS_F, respectively, at 318 K. The kinetic and isothermal data better fitted to the pseudo-second-order and Langmuir models. Thermodynamics indicated that the processes had an endothermic, spontaneous, and reversible character. The main adsorption mechanisms were H-bond and π-interactions. The pH and ionic strength studies indicated that the adsorption efficiency has not been reduced pronouncedly. The biosorbents reuse was effective for five cycles. In the synthetic mixture, the removal rate was satisfactory (92.53% and 57.02%, respectively for SBH_F and AÇS_F)_. These results demonstrate the biosorbents high potential for large-scale application.

Activated Carbon as Superadsorbent and Sustainable Material for Diverse Applications

Activated carbon is a carbonaceous material with highly porous structure. Different functionalities can be introduced to its surface by various physical and chemical treatments. Various precursors can be used for the synthesis of activated carbon such as fossil fuels, agricultural wastes, and lignocellulosic wastes, etc. Number of papers have been reported in literature devoted to the synthesis, characterization, and various applications of activated carbon. Herein, in this review, special attention has been paid to the basic properties of activated carbon and its surface chemistry originated due to physical and chemical treatment. In addition, a general introduction to adsorption process, various adsorption isotherms, and adsorption kinetics is also included. A brief description of mechanism of adsorption onto activated carbon is also presented. At last, most probable applications of activated carbon such as adsorption of pollutants (e.g., dyes, heavy metal ions, pesticides, pharmaceutical waste products, and volatile organic organic), as catalyst support, anduse in food and pharmaceutical industries is also presented.

Flame synthesis of carbon nanoparticles from corn oil as a highly effective cationic dye adsorbent

Carbon nanoparticles (CNP) were synthesized through flame deposition method from a sustainable corn oil precursor. The morphology, particle size, surface chemistry, thermal stability, and zeta potential of the CNP were characterized. The batch adsorption of a cationic dye, methylene blue (MB), by the CNP at various concentrations, pH, and temperatures was evaluated to investigate the CNP's efficacy in industrial wastewater treatment applications. Results revealed the excellent adsorption of MB onto the CNP. The experimental data were then fitted into isotherm models, kinetic models, and thermodynamic models, and the model parameters, constants, Gibb free energy, enthalpy, and entropy were calculated and discussed. Hydrogen bonding and strong electrostatic interaction were the main adsorption mechanism for MB adsorption by the CNP. The CNP exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 138.89 mg/g, indicating superior adsorption of MB dye without the need for any further purification and activation steps. The adsorption efficiency did not compromise as the solution temperature increased up to 60 °C, and it can further be enhanced under alkaline conditions. To simulate the practical and industrial use of the developed CNP in textile effluent treatment, successful experiments were conducted in continuous flow adsorption by allowing concentrated MB solution to flow through a designed fixed bed purification system with a CNP filter bed.

Bio-synthesized Cu-ZnO hetro-nanostructure for catalytic degradation of organophosphate chlorpyrifos under solar illumination

In present study, a simple, effective and rapid green method using leaf extract of Melia azedarach was explored for the synthesis of Cu-ZnO nano heterojunction particles. The leaf extract of Melia azedarach acts as a reducing agent and prevents the agglomeration of nanoparticles. Different standard analytical techniques were used to study the morphology and size of synthesized nanocomposite. The efficiency of the synthesized material was tested as a photocatalyst for the degradation of simulated wastewater having chlorpyriphos pesticide. The different factors have been investigated such as pH of the solution, catalyst dosage and conact time. Approximately, 81% of chlorpyrifos was degraded after 240 min of solar illumination. The generation of hydroxyl radicals at the catalysts surface owing to photo-irradiation contributed to the chlorpyrifos degradation. The maximum photo-degradation (91%) of pesticides was observed at 6.0 pH. The pathway for the degradation of chlorpyriphos has been checked by LC-MS and this hinting the absence of any harmfull side product. The COD removal and TOC was found to be 32.4% and 28.5%, respectively. The photodegradation of chlorpyriphos using Cu-ZnO nanocomposite was followed the pseudo-first-order kinetic with higher value of regressiuon coefficient (0.99).

Graphene oxide decorated with cellulose and copper nanoparticle as an efficient adsorbent for the removal of malachite green

In this study, the graphene oxide surface was modified by grafting of nanocellulose and copper nanoparticles to promote the surface charge and adsorption efficiency for malachite green (MG). The structural and configurational properties of GO-CEL-Cu were verified by UV/Vis, SEM, TEM, EDX and FTIR spectroscopy and confirmed the electrostatic interaction and hydrogen bonding between GO, CEL and Cu-NPs. TEM images confirmed the deposition of Cu-NPs size between 24 and 37 nm on the GO surface. The uniform fine particles size makes strong interfacial interaction with GO sheets result in efficient load transfer from the matrix to the hybrid. The variable parameters such as adsorbent amount, MG concentration, pH, time and temperature were investigated to achieve optimum experimental condition. The experimental data was justified by Langmuir isotherm model with adsorption capacity for GO, GO-Cu, GO-CEL, GO-CEL-Cu as 127.3, 149.2, 156.8 and 207.1 mg/g, respectively. The spontaneity and endothermic nature of the process were confirmed by negative Gibbs free energy and followed the pseudo-second-order rate equation. Additionally, positive values of enthalpy and entropy suggesting endothermic process and increase randomness during process, respectively. In conclusion, nanocomposite is capable to adsorb the toxic dye due to its well economic, eco-friendly, well adsorption rate and regeneration ability.

Treated residue from aluminium lamination as adsorbent of toxic reactive dyes - a kinetic, equilibrium and thermodynamic study

The residue generated in the aluminium cold lamination (TTR) was submitted to a direct burning and then it was calcined at 500°C. BET, FTIR, SEM with EDX and TGA techniques were performed to characterize the adsorbent before and after the adsorption. BET analysis showed that TTR specific surface area was 55.37 m² g^-1 and there were no significant changes after the adsorptive process. Afterwards, the TTR was applied as adsorbent of the reactive Drimaren Blue (DB), Drimaren Red (DR) and Drimaren Gold (DG). Its employment consists in a sustainable alternative for the treatment of textile wastewater, once the TTR was used as low-cost adsorbent of textile dyes. Kinetic studies showed that the process reached the equilibrium state between 5 and 10 min. The pseudo-second-order model better fitted the adsorption kinetics, with kinetic rate constants 10.51, 34.71 and 31.51 mg min g^-1 for DB, DR and DG respectively. The equilibrium experiments were performed to obtain the adsorption parameters for each dye; moreover, the maximum adsorption capacity was 6.27, 0.42 and 1.23 mg g^-1 for DB, DR and DG, respectively. Thermodynamics studies allowed to obtain the values of enthalpy for DB, DR and DG, -7.90, 14.03 and -17.75 kJ mol^-1, respectively. Furthermore, the negative values of Gibbs free energy confirmed the spontaneity of the adsorption. The results point to the physisorption characteristic of the process, in which the temperature negatively influenced the adsorption for the DB and DG; the opposite result was observed for the DR.

Guar gum-crosslinked-Soya lecithin nanohydrogel sheets as effective adsorbent for the removal of thiophanate methyl fungicide

Rapid increase in use of fungicides for the agricultural and industrial purposes has marked the deterioration of water resources which ultimately affects the human life. Accordingly, various attempts have been made in the removal of these noxious compounds. In the same context, we are presenting biopolymers based nanohydrogel sheets; guar gum-crosslinked-Soya lecithin nanohydrogel sheets (GG-crosslinked-SY NHS) used for the effective removal of a fungicide; thiophanate methyl from aqueous solution. Guar gum and soya lecithin were employed as the biopolymers in the fabrication of nanohydrogel sheets due to their non- toxic nature, easy availability, cheapness and significant properties. Due to the presence of highly reactive functional groups onto the surface of GG-crosslinked-SY NHS, good adsorption results have been obtained. Maximum adsorption capacity of 59.205mg/g was observed with 20mg GG-crosslinked-SY NHS and 25ppm thiophanate methyl solution concentration as calculated from the Langmuir isotherm. Results showed that neutral pH favoured the adsorption process. Kinetics results were indicative of the physical interactions between the thiophanate methyl and GG-crosslinked-SY NHS surface. Thermodynamic results have shown the spontaneous and endothermic adsorption process.

Process optimization on methyl orange discoloration in Fe3O4/RGO-H2O2 Fenton-like system

The development of a catalyst with high catalytic activity was one of the most important issues for the heterogeneous Fenton-like process. In this study, nanocomposites of Fe₃O₄ anchored onto reduced graphene oxide (RGO) were prepared by a moderate alkaline-thermal precipitation method and developed as highly efficient heterogeneous Fenton-like catalysts. The characterization results indicated that Fe₃O₄ nanoparticles (NPs) were tightly anchored onto few-layer RGO sheets via a strong interaction. Contrast experiments showed that Fe₃O₄/RGO nanocomposites had much better Fenton-like catalytic activity than Fe₃O₄ NPs. The process optimization of methyl orange (MO) discoloration in Fe₃O₄/RGO-H₂O₂ system was accomplished by central composite design under response surface methodology. A second-order polynomial model was established to predict the optimal values of MO discoloration and its significance was evaluated by analysis of variance. Three-dimensional response surfaces for the interaction between two variables were constructed. Based on the model prediction, the optimum conditions for MO discoloration in Fe₃O₄/RGO-H₂O₂ system were 2.9 for solution pH, 16.5 mM H₂O₂ concentration, 2.5 g/L catalyst dosage and 33.5 min of reaction time, with the maximum predicted value for MO discoloration ratio of 99.98%.
