Aerobic sludge granulation for simultaneous anaerobic decolorization and aerobic aromatic amines mineralization for azo dye wastewater treatment

Preparation of magnetic Co–Fe layered double hydroxides and its adsorption properties for the removal of methyl orange

In this study, Co–Fe layered double hydroxides are prepared by a hydrothermal method. The Co–Fe layered double hydroxides are used as an adsorbent for the investigation of the thermodynamic parameters and adsorption kinetics of methyl orange from aqueous solution. The results show that adsorption is affected by adsorbent dosage, adsorption time, and temperature. The characteristics of samples are investigated using X-ray powder diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms. The adsorption saturation level of Co–Fe layered double hydroxides on methyl orange is studied, with the results showing that the maximum uptake capacity for methyl orange is 10.21 mg g−1 based on Co–Fe layered double hydroxides. The adsorption kinetics of methyl orange is consistent with the Temkin isotherm equation and quasi-secondary kinetic model. Furthermore, separation is easily accomplished under the action of an applied magnetic field. The prepared Co–Fe layered double hydroxides can be applied as an effective adsorbent for decontamination of anionic dyes in industrial effluents.

Decolorization of Reactive Red 120 by a novel bacterial consortium: Kinetics and heavy metal inhibition study

<abstract><p>Juru River is one of the most polluted rivers in Malaysia. A dye-degrading bacterial consortium has been isolated from the river's sediment. This consortium JR3 consists of <italic>Pseudomonas aeruginosa</italic> MM01, <italic>Enterobacter</italic> sp. MM05 and <italic>Serratia marcescens</italic> MM06, which were able to decolorize up to 700 ppm of the Reactive Red 120 (RR120) dye under optimal conditions with limited substrate available. Substrate inhibition kinetics were investigated, and, based on the best model, Aiba, the maximum growth rate was 0.795 h^–1, while the saturation constant and inhibitory constant were 0.185% and 0.14%, respectively. In addition, the influence of various metal ions on the growth and decolorization rate of this bacterial consortium on RR120 was investigated. Chromium showed the weakest effect on the decolorization of 200 ppm RR120, with 73.5% removal and bacterial growth of 11.461 log CFU mL^–1. Zinc yielded the second weakest effect, followed by silver and lead, with percentages of RR120 decolorization of 63.8%, 54.6% and 50.5%, respectively. Meanwhile, cadmium, arsenic and copper reduced the decolorization of RR120 in consortium JR3 by half. Mercury strongly inhibited decolorization by 32.5%. Based on the least inhibited heavy metal in RR120 decolorization activity of consortium JR3, the best inhibitory kinetic model was Levenspiel, with a maximum growth rate of 0.632 h^–1, while the saturation constant and inhibitory constants were 15.08% and 0.5783%, respectively. The metal-tolerant azo dye-degrading bacterial consortium will be very useful in dye remediation in metal-laden polluted environments.</p></abstract>

Improved decolorization and mineralization of azo dye in an integrated system of anaerobic bioelectrochemical modules and aerobic moving bed biofilm reactor

In this study, a stacked integrated system with anaerobic bioelectrochemical system (BES) and aerobic moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) was developed to improve the decolorization and mineralization of azo dye. This stacked BES-MBBR exhibited better performance with acid orange (AO7) decolorization of 96.4 ± 0.6% and chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal of 87.7 ± 4.4%. Contribution of each module in the BES and MBBR stages indicated that BES modules enhanced the pretreatment process in AO7 decolorization, and MBBR played an important role in further removal of COD. The mechanism analysis indicated that the azo bond was cleaved with reductive decolorization at biocathode in the anaerobic BES stages, and then the intermediate products can be further oxidized with COD removal in the aerobic MBBR stage. This work demonstrated that the integrated system with stacked anaerobic BES and aerobic MBBR could provide a promising way for the pretreatment and post-treatment of refractory wastewater.

Recent Achievements in Dyes Removal Focused on Advanced Oxidation Processes Integrated with Biological Methods

In the last 3 years alone, over 10,000 publications have appeared on the topic of dye removal, including over 300 reviews. Thus, the topic is very relevant, although there are few articles on the practical applications on an industrial scale of the results obtained in research laboratories. Therefore, in this review, we focus on advanced oxidation methods integrated with biological methods, widely recognized as highly efficient treatments for recalcitrant wastewater, that have the best chance of industrial application. It is extremely important to know all the phenomena and mechanisms that occur during the process of removing dyestuffs and the products of their degradation from wastewater to prevent their penetration into drinking water sources. Therefore, particular attention is paid to understanding the mechanisms of both chemical and biological degradation of dyes, and the kinetics of these processes, which are important from a design point of view, as well as the performance and implementation of these operations on a larger scale.

Decoding social behaviors in a glycerol dependent bacterial consortium during Reactive Blue 28 degradation

Biodegradation of reactive azo dyes has been an arduous problem for decades. Several efficient biosystems have been proposed for dye degradation, but most of them are dependent on the availability of costly co-substrates such as peptone, yeast extract, and/or glucose. The present study describes the azo dye degradation by a bacterial consortium using glycerol as a sole co-substrate. The consortium was developed from a mixed bacterial culture obtained upon enrichment of soil sediment for Reactive Blue 28 (RB28) decolorization in the presence of glycerol (0.1%; v/v). The consortium with three bacterial species, i.e., Stenotrophomonas acidaminiphila APG1, Cellulomonas sp. APG4, and Pseudomonas stutzeri APG2, designated as "SCP," decolorized 92% of 100 ppm dye in 96 h. The intricacies of the interactions existing within the members of the consortium were resolved by a simple and unique analysis called "BSocial." Among all the members, Cellulomonas sp. APG4 exerted a net-positive impact for decolorization (%) on the consortium. The net fitness of the community increased when all the three species were present, and thus, all of them were selected for further analysis. Moreover, APG4 seemed to be central in the reductive decolorization as it possessed the highest reductase activity. The dye degradation by the consortium was demonstrated by UV-Visible spectroscopy, HPTLC, and FTIR spectroscopy of control and decolorized cell-free supernatant. The LC-ESI-MS analysis of metabolites extracted from decolorized cell-free medium led to the identification of degradation products, thus leading us to propose the plausible pathway for degradation of RB28 by bacterial consortium.
