Preparation and characterization of modified rice husks by biological delignification and acetylation for oil spill cleanup

Diesel removal in non-aqueous phase by fibres from Calotropis procera: kinetic, isothermal and sorption potential evaluation

Calotropis procera fibres have been proposed for free-phase diesel removal in case of spillage into groundwater. For this, characterizations were carried out using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM), wettability and contact angle measurements. Sorption oil capacity, kinetic, isothermal and recycling behaviour were evaluated. For initial optimization of the oil sorption capacity, an experimental design (DOE) was applied, with the optimized condition being 60 g L-1 of diesel in water and 0.01 g of fibre. Then, the results clearly indicated that the fibres have a hydrophobic and oleophilic character, quickly reaching more than 71.43 g g-1 of diesel sorption, according to the adjustment (R² > 0.99) of the pseudo-second order and Langmuir models, governed by absorption mechanisms. It should also be noted that at the end of 8 reuse cycles, the fibre presented a total accumulated sorption capacity of about 252.6 g g-1 of diesel. Furthermore, a laboratory-scale experiment was carried out to remove diesel from groundwater in gas station areas, the fibre removed 98.55% to 99.97% of removal efficiencies were achieved of the free phase over time. Therefore, the material demonstrates excellent characteristics for removing diesel spills in groundwater due to its fast, high and stable removal capacity.

Photothermal and Concus Finn capillary assisted superhydrophobic fibrous network enabling instant viscous oil transport for crude oil cleanup

Rapid and effective removal of highly viscous oil spills from the sea remains a great challenge globally. Superhydrophobic materials are attractive candidates for handling oil spills, but they are restrained to recover oils with low viscosity exclusively. Herein, we report a novel polypyrrole wrapped superhydrophobic fibrous network using cross-shaped polyester fibers as starting blocks. The polypyrrole coating enables the absorbent to convert light to heat, ensuring that the viscosity of heavy oils in the proximity can be easily controlled. In the meanwhile, the special structure of the starting fibers initiates Concus Finn (CFin) capillary allowing instant oil transport in the network. When the absorbent is exposed to light oils (0-500 mPa.s), the oils can be transported instantly via CFin capillary. Interestingly, under synergistic effect of light-to-heat conversion and CFin capillary, a drawing-sticking crude oil strip (10⁵ mPa.s) is sucked instantly against gravity by the absorbent. The absorbent is successfully applied to efficiently separate both oil/water mixtures and oil/water emulsions (efficiency > 99%). Such absorbent can absorb 62.99-74.23 g/g light oils on average and up to 123.3 g/g crude oil under 0-2 sun illumination, holding a huge potential in managing oil spills.

Enzymatic preparation of hydrophobic biomass with one-pot synthesis and the oil removal performance

Oil pollution is causing deleterious damage to aquatic ecosystems and human health. The utilization of agricultural waste such as corn stalk (CS) to produce biosorbents has been considered an ecofriendly and efficient approach for removing oil. However, most previous studies focused on the modification of the whole CS, which is inefficient due to the heterogeneity of CS. In this study, corn stalk pith (CP), which has excellent amphipathic characteristics, was selected to prepare a high-efficiency oil sorbent by grafting dodecyl gallate (DG, a long-chain alkyl) onto CP surface lignin via laccase mediation. The modified biomass (DGCP) shows high hydrophobicity (water contact angle = 140.2°) and superoleophilicity (oil contact angle = 0°) and exhibits a high oil sorption capacity (46.43 g/g). In addition, DGCP has good stability and reusability for adsorbing oil from the aqueous phase. Kinetic and isotherm models and two-dimensional correlation spectroscopy integrated with FTIR analyses revealed that the main sorption mechanism involves the H-bond effect, hydrophobic effect and van der Waals force. This work provides an ecofriendly method to prepare oil sorbents and new insights into the mechanisms underlying the removal of spilled oil from wastewater.

Sustainable ecofriendly recruitment of bioethanol fermentation lignocellulosic spent waste biomass for the safe reuse and discharge of petroleum production produced water via biosorption and solid biofuel production

Sustainable lignocellulosic spent waste rice straw (SWRS) from bioethanol production inventively applied in this study to valorize petroleum production produced water (PPPW). SWRS expressed efficient pollutant removal over a wide range of petroleum concentration, temperature, pH, salinity, and mixing rate reaching approximately 217 mg/g, within four hours contact time. Kinetic studies revealed a pseudo-second-order chemisorption process with a boundary layer control and 16.97 kJ/mol activation energy where the intra-particle diffusion was not the only rate regulatory step. Thermodynamic studies revealed spontaneous, favorable, and endothermic adsorption, with a strong affinity between the SWRS and oil molecules. Biosorption mechanism studies proved the enrollment of SWRS components' lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose in the oil uptake with the predominance of chemisorption over physisorption onto the rough and highly porous SWRS surface. A single-stage batch biosorption process was designed based on the best fitted Langmuir adsorption isotherm and applied on a real PPPW sample. The Egyptian standard limits for safe industrial effluents discharge into marine environment with a concomitant decrease in scale formation precursors were achieved recommending its safe reuse for enhanced oil recovery. Finally, for accomplishing zero-waste, SWRS disposed of PPPW treatment substantiated valorized solid biofuel with a sufficient calorific value 38.56 MJ/kg.

Chemically modified rice husk as an effective adsorbent for removal of palladium ions

Bio-matrix of rice husk and Mobil Composition of Matter No. 41 (MCM-41) was modified with alizarin red S for preconcentration of Pd²⁺ prior flame atomic absorption spectrometric determination. The prepared bio-matrix (RH@MCM-41@ARS) was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscope (TEM), scanning electron microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (SEM/EDX) and surface area studies. The impact of different parameters (solution pH, amount of sorbent, contact time, sample volume, initial Pd²⁺ concentration and diverse ions) on the uptake of Pd²⁺ were evaluated. The maximum adsorption capacity of Pd²⁺ onto RH@MCM-41@ARS was 198.2 mg g^-1 at optimum conditions. Applying the optimized procedure as a preconcentration step led to limit of detection of 0.13 μg L^-1 and dynamic analytical range up to 500 μg L^-1. The sorbent was regenerated by 0.5 mol L^-1 thiourea for at least 10 cycles without significant reduction of adsorption capacity. The method was applied for preconcentration of Pd²⁺ from real samples.

Oil Spill Detection Using LBP Feature and K-Means Clustering in Shipborne Radar Image

Oil spill accidents have seriously harmed the marine environment. Effective oil spill monitoring can provide strong scientific and technological support for emergency response of law enforcement departments. Shipborne radar can be used to monitor oil spills immediately after the accident. In this paper, the original shipborne radar image collected by the teaching-practice ship Yukun of Dalian Maritime University during the oil spill accident of Dalian on 16 July 2010 was taken as the research data, and an oil spill detection method was proposed by using LBP texture feature and K-means algorithm. First, Laplacian operator, Otsu algorithm, and mean filter were used to suppress the co-frequency interference noises and high brightness pixels. Then the gray intensity correction matrix was used to reduce image nonuniformity. Next, using LBP texture feature and K-means clustering algorithm, the effective oil spill regions were extracted. Finally, the adaptive threshold was applied to identify the oil films. This method can automatically detect oil spills in shipborne radar image. It can provide a guarantee for real-time monitoring of oil spill accidents.
