Enhanced degradation of benzo[a]pyrene and toxicity reduction by microbubble ozonation

Ozone Micronano-bubble-Enhanced Selective Degradation of Oxytetracycline from Production Wastewater: The Overlooked Singlet Oxygen Oxidation

The efficient and selective removal of refractory antibiotics from high-strength antibiotic production wastewater is crucial but remains a substantial challenge. In this study, a novel ozone micronano-bubble (MNB)-enhanced treatment system was constructed for antibiotic production wastewater treatment. Compared with conventional ozone, ozone MNBs exhibit excellent treatment efficiency for oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation and toxicity decrease. Notably, this study identifies the overlooked singlet oxygen (1O2) for the first time as a crucial active species in the ozone MNB system through probe and electron paramagnetic resonance methods. Subsequently, the oxidation mechanisms of OTC by ozone MNBs are systematically investigated. Owing to the high reactivity of OTC toward 1O2, ozone MNBs enhance the selective and anti-interference performance of OTC degradation in raw OTC production wastewater with complex matrixes. This study provides insights into the mechanism of ozone MNB-enhanced pollutant degradation and a new perspective for the efficient treatment of high-concentration industrial wastewater using ozone MNBs. In addition, this study presents a promising technology with scientific guidance for the treatment of antibiotic production wastewater.

Determining the degradation mechanism and application potential of benzopyrene-degrading bacterium Acinetobacter XS-4 by screening

In industrial wastewater treatment, organic pollutants are usually removed by in-situ microorganisms and exogenous bactericides. Benzo [a] pyrene (BaP) is a typical persistent organic pollutant and difficult to be removed. In this study, a new strain of BaP degrading bacteria Acinetobacter XS-4 was obtained and the degradation rate was optimized by response surface method. The results showed that the degradation rate of BaP was 62.73% when pH= 8, substrate concentration was 10 mg/L, temperature was 25 °C, inoculation amount was 15% and culture rate was 180 r/min. Its degradation rate was better than that of the reported degrading bacteria. XS-4 is active in the degradation of BaP. BaP is degraded into phenanthrene by 3, 4-dioxygenase (α subunit and β subunit) in pathway Ⅰ and rapidly forms aldehydes, esters and alkanes. The pathway Ⅱ is realized by the action of salicylic acid hydroxylase. When sodium alginate and polyvinyl alcohol were added to the actual coking wastewater to immobilize XS-4, the degradation rate of BaP was 72.68% after 7 days, and the removal effect was better than that of single BaP wastewater (62.36%), which has the application potential. This study provides theoretical and technical support for microbial degradation of BaP in industrial wastewater.

Application of Ozonation-Biodegradation Hybrid System for Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons Degradation

Creosote, a mixture of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), was and is a wood impregnate of widespread use. Over the years the accumulation of creosote PAHs in soils and freshwaters has increased, causing a threat to ecosystems. The combined ozonation-biodegradation process is proposed to improve the slow and inefficient biodegradation of creosote hydrocarbons. The impact of different ozonation methods on the biodegradation of model wastewater was evaluated. The biodegradation rate, the changes in chemical oxygen demand, and the total organic carbon concentration were measured in order to provide insight into the process. Moreover, the bacteria consortium activity was monitored during the biodegradation step of the process. The collected data confirmed the research hypothesis, which was that the hybrid method can improve biodegradation. The pre-ozonation followed by inoculation with a bacteria consortium resulted in a significant increase in the biodegradation rate. It allows for the shortening of the time required for the consortium to reach maximum degradation effectiveness and cell activity. Hence, the study gives an important and useful perspective for the decontamination of creosote-polluted ecosystems.

Full-Scale O3/Micro-Nano Bubbles System Based Advanced Oxidation as Alternative Tertiary Treatment in WWTP Effluents

Wastewater treatment plant effluents can be an important source of contamination in agricultural reuse practices, as pharmaceuticals are poorly degraded by conventional treatments and can enter crops, thereby becoming a toxicological risk. Therefore, advanced tertiary treatments are required. Ozone (O3) is a promising alternative due to its capacity to degrade pharmaceutical compounds, together with its disinfecting power. However, mass transfer from the gas to the liquid phase can be a limiting step. A novel alternative for increased ozone efficiency is the combination of micro-nano bubbles (MNBs). However, this is still a fairly unknown method, and there are also many uncertainties regarding their implementation in large-scale systems. In this work, a combined O3/MNBs full-scale system was installed in a WWTP to evaluate the removal efficiency of 12 pharmaceuticals, including COVID-19-related compounds. The results clearly showed that the use of MNBs had a significantly positive contribution to the effects of ozone, reducing energy costs with respect to conventional O3 processes. Workflow and ozone production were key factors for optimizing the system, with the highest efficiencies achieved at 2000 L/h and 15.9 gO3/h, resulting in high agronomic water quality effluents. A first estimation of the transformation products generated was described, jointly with the energy costs required.

Contemporary application of microbubble technology in water treatment

Microbubble (MB) technology constitutes a suite of promising low-cost technologies with potential applications in various sectors. Microbubbles (MBs) are tiny gas bubbles with diameters in the micrometre range of 10-100 μm. Along with their small size, they share special characteristics like slow buoyancy, large gas-liquid interfacial area and high mass-transfer efficiency. Initially, the review examines the key dissimilarities among the different types of microbubble generators (MBG) towards economic large-scale production of MBs. The applications of MBs to explore their effectiveness at different stages of wastewater treatment extending from aeration, separation/ flotation, ozonation, disinfection and other processes are investigated. A summary of the recent advances of MBs in real and synthetic wastewater treatment, existing research gaps, and limitations in upscaling of the technology, conclusion and future recommendations is detailed. A critical analysis of the energetics and treatment cost of combined approaches of MB technology with other advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) is carried out highlighting the potential applicability of hybrid technology in large-scale wastewater treatment.

Bubble Column Bioreactor using native non-genetically modified organisms: a remediation alternative by hydrocarbon-polluted water from the Gulf of Mexico

Notwithstanding the benefits that oil provides as a source of energy, society also recognizes the environmental problems caused by its use. We evaluated eight coastal sites in the central area of the Gulf of Mexico. At these sites, 14 hydrocarbons were detected which belong to compounds formed by carbons ranging from C9 to C27. The hydrocarbons with the highest concentrations were n-nonane (3.07 ± 1.60 mg L−1), carbazole (0.93 ± 0.12 mg L−1) and benzo [a] pyrene (1.33 ± 0.71 mg L−1). The hydrocarbons found belong mostly to medium fraction hydrocarbons, which are mostly found in fuels such as diesel. Therefore, this fuel was used as a carbon source or substrate in bubble column bioreactors. The capacity of non-genetically modified organisms to degrade microbial hydrocarbons was evaluated using a mineral medium for a period of 14 days. Suspended solids increased from 0.8 to 2.94 g L−1. Diesel consumption was achieved in 12 days of operation.

Microbubble ozonation of the antioxidant butylated hydroxytoluene: Degradation kinetics and toxicity reduction

Butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT) is recognized as a crucial pollutant in aquatic environments, but efforts to achieve its complete removal are without success. The aim of this study was to investigate the degradation efficiency of BHT in water using ozone microbubbles (OMB), coupled with toxicity change assessment at sub-lethal BHT concentrations (0.34, 0.45 and 0.90 μM) based on oxidative stress biomarkers in Daphnia magna. The efficiency of OMB on ozone gas mass transfer was assessed and the contribution of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) in the degradation of BHT was determined using p-chlorobenzoic acid (pCBA) probe compound and a ·OH radical scavenger (sodium carbonate, Na₂CO₃). The ozone gas mass transfer coefficient (k_La = 1.02 × 10^-2 s^-1) was much larger than the ozone self-decomposition rate (k_d = 8 × 10^-4 s^-1) implying little influence of self-decomposing ozone in the volumetric ozone transfer during OMB generation. Generally, OMB improved ozone gas mass transfer (1.3-19-fold) relative to conventional ozone techniques, while indirect reaction of BHT with ·OH was dominant (82%) over the direct reaction with molecular ozone. Addition of 15, 25 and 35 mM Na₂CO₃ reduced BHT degradation by 30, 50 and 65%, respectively, indicating the significance of ·OH in the degradation of BHT. Increase in initial BHT concentration correspondingly reduced its removal rate by OMB possibly due to increase in metabolites produced during ozonation. Post BHT treatment exposure tests recorded significant (p < 0.05) reductions in oxidative stress (according to enzyme activities changes) in D. magna compared to pretreatment tests, demonstrating the effectiveness of OMB in detoxification of BHT. Overall, the results of the study indicate that OMB is extremely efficient in complete degradation of BHT in water and, consequently, significantly (p < 0.05) reducing its toxicity.
