Teaching professionalism: some features in Canadian physiotherapy programs

Development of emotional intelligence and assertiveness in physiotherapy students and effects of clinical placements

BACKGROUND

Emotional intelligence (EI) and assertiveness are key abilities for physiotherapists. Clinical placements seem to affect students' development of EI and assertiveness, and their construction of the professional role.

PURPOSE

This study aims to compare the EI of physiotherapy students with students from other health professions and explore the evolution of EI and assertiveness in physiotherapy students throughout their university education, focusing on the influence of clinical practice.

METHOD

Students (N = 753) completed a self-administered questionnaire to measure emotional intelligence (TMMS 24), assertiveness (CSES), and sociodemographic variables.

RESULTS

EI levels were adequate and very similar across the three disciplines. Regarding assertiveness, physiotherapy students in year 4 obtained significantly higher levels than students in years 1, 2, and 3. Significant correlations (rs (207) = 0.35, p < .001) were found between assertiveness and the number of modules of clinical practice.

CONCLUSION

This study contributes with further evidence on the improvement of assertiveness in physiotherapy students through their university education and, in particular, with clinical placements. Practical implications highlight the importance of training in EI and assertiveness during university, coupled with clinical placements, in order to prepare for an effective and satisfactory professional life.

Physiotherapy Students' Performance in Clinical Education: An Analysis of 1 Year of Canadian Cross-Sectional Data

Purpose: This research examines 1 year of cross-sectional, Canada-wide ratings from clinical instructors using the Canadian Physiotherapy Assessment of Clinical Performance (ACP) and analyzes the performance profiles of physiotherapy students' performance ratings over the course of their entry-to-practice clinical placements. Method: Canadian physiotherapy programmes that use the ACP were invited to submit anonymized, cross-sectional data for placements completed during 2018. Descriptive analyses and summary statistics were completed. Mixed-effects modelling was used to create typical performance profiles for each evaluation criterion in the ACP. Stepwise ordered logistic regression was also completed. Results: Ten programmes contributed data on 3,290 placements. Profiles were generated for each ACP evaluative item by means of mixed-effects modelling; three profiles are presented. In all cases, the predicted typical performance by the end of 24 months of study was approximately the rating corresponding to entry level. Subtle differences among profiles were identified, including the rate at which a student may be predicted to receive a rating of "entry level." Conclusions: This analysis identified that, in 2018, the majority of Canadian physiotherapy students were successful on clinical placements and typically achieved a rating of "entry level" on ACP items at the end of 24 months.

Turning unprofessional behaviors around using Holmes' reflection approach: a randomized controlled study

Many medical schools around the world have included professionalism training in their formal curriculum. However, these efforts may not be adequate; given the exposure of students to unprofessional behaviors in the clinical settings. In the present study, we aimed to design, implement, and evaluate a longitudinal program to improve professionalism among medical students upon their transition to clinical settings. A total of 75 medical students were enrolled in the study and randomly assigned to two groups. The control group did not receive any training, while for the intervention group; a 10-hour program through 16 weeks was organized based on the Holmes' reflection approach. The effectiveness of the program was evaluated by measuring three outcomes in both groups. Data analysis was performed using paired t-test and Multiple Linear Regression. Scores of judgment of professionalism increased in the intervention group (from 7.56 to 10.17; P< 0.001), while there was no significant improvement in the control group's scores. Students' attitudes towards professionalism and their professional behaviors did not change significantly. Based on our findings, the Holmes reflection approach helps students improve their cognitive base of professionalism. Long-term follow-up and further qualitative studies will help us better understand the effects of this approach on other desirable outcomes.
