Abstract
OBJECTIVES To describe the use of mobile devices after acquired brain injury (ABI), from the perspectives of injured individuals and significant others, and to examine factors associated with mobile device use for cognition. METHODS Cross-sectional study with 50 adults with moderate/severe traumatic brain injury or stroke (42% women; mean of 50.7 years old, 4.6 years post-ABI), and 24 significant others. Participants completed questionnaires on mobile technology, cognitive functioning and the impact of technology. RESULTS Of 45/50 adults with ABI who owned a smartphone/tablet, 31% reported difficulties in using their device post-injury, 44% had received support, and 46% were interested in further training. Significant others reported motor/visual impairments and the fear of becoming dependent on technology as barriers for mobile device use, and 65% mentioned that their injured relative needed additional support. Mobile device use for cognition was common (64%), predicted in a regression model by lower subjective memory and more positive perception of the psychosocial impacts of technology, and also associated in univariate analyses with younger age, lower executive functioning, and greater use of memory strategies. CONCLUSION Using mobile devices for cognition is common post-ABI but remains challenging for a significant proportion. Developing training approaches may help supporting technology use.

Abstract
PURPOSE We examine the use of a custom iPad application, the Rehab Portal, to provide clients in an inpatient brain injury rehabilitation service with access to short videos where clinicians-or the clients themselves-discuss their current rehabilitation goals. MATERIALS AND METHODS We developed an initial version of the Rehab Portal app based on our previous co-design with service users, their families, and clinicians. This was examined in a field trial with a series of six clients over the course of their stays in inpatient rehabilitation, collecting quantitative data on clinician and client engagement with the Rehab Portal, alongside a thematic analysis of qualitative interviews with clients and clinicians at the point of discharge. RESULTS Engagement with the platform was high for two clients while it was limited with four more. In our thematic analysis we discuss how introduction of the Rehab Portal disrupted practice, changing how things are done, causing deviation from usual routines, adding burden, and threatening professional integrity. At the same time, where it worked well it led to a repositioning of goal planning away from being clinician directed and towards an ongoing, dynamic collaboration between clinicians, clients and their families. Finally, in some cases we identified a reverting to the status quo, with client demotivation having an unexpected impact on clinician behaviour leading to the process being abandoned. CONCLUSIONS The current findings do not provide wholesale support for this approach, yet we continue to feel that approaches that support clinician-client communication using asynchronous video may offer considerable future value and are worthy of further investigation.

Abstract
People with acquired brain injuries (ABI) face financial challenges that affect their daily lives. Managing finances is a crucial activity that can help avoid social isolation. However, this task becomes difficult for people with ABI because of their cognitive impairments. Recent advances in digital technology can help people with ABI manage their finances more effectively. This study aims to identify and describe available digital tools that can help ABI in budget management, and identify their effectiveness, barriers and facilitators to implementation. To address this issue, we conducted a rapid review of academic databases followed by a modified Google/Google Scholar search to identify the digital tools to support budgeting tasks (DBT) used and tested by people with ABI. Our rapid review included only two articles on the use of DBT. The first study showed that common portable electronic devices were acceptable and desirable as memory and organisational aids for people with ABI. The second study documented the development of a DBT and the perception of users (research participants) who found it appealing and user-friendly. However, for both articles, the technologies used are outdated and lack information on barriers and facilitators to using DBT. In conclusion, this literature review revealed that digital technologies have the potential to support budget management in people with ABI, but technology needs to be made available on the market to benefit the users. Further research and development are needed to create new ways to help people with brain injuries manage their budgets.

Abstract
Abstract Rapid technology advances have led to diverse assistive technology (AT) options for use in memory rehabilitation after traumatic brain injury (TBI). This systematic review aimed to evaluate the efficacy of electronic AT for supporting phases of memory in daily life after TBI. A secondary aim was to examine user perspectives on the utility of AT and factors influencing uptake or use. A systematic search of PsycINFO, MEDLINE, Cumulative Index of Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), Excerpta Medica database (Embase), Scopus, and Cochrane Library was conducted from database inception to June 13, 2022, to identify eligible studies. Methodological quality was assessed by two independent reviewers. Nineteen eligible articles involving a total of 311 participants included four randomized controlled trials (RCTs; Class I), five single-case experimental designs (Class II), and 10 pre-post group (n > 10) or single-case studies without experimental control (Class III). Three Class I studies, two Class II studies and eight Class III studies supported the efficacy of AT for supporting memory functioning. Treatment fidelity was not examined in any study. There was the most empirical support for the efficacy of AT for facilitating retrieval and execution phases of memory (i.e., supported by 6/9 studies) with external support to encode memory intentions or pre-programmed reminders. Further controlled studies are needed to determine whether outcomes vary according to individuals' level of independence with use (e.g., self-initiated vs. pre-programmed reminders) and to examine user characteristics and design features influencing uptake and effectiveness. Greater involvement of end-users with brain injury in the design and evaluation of AT features is also recommended to enhance usability and uptake in daily life.

Abstract
Memory disorders are common in clinical practice. This review focuses on the rehabilitation of anterograde amnesia, the inability to learn and retrieve new information, in non-degenerative brain disease. Diverse mnemonic strategies may be helpful in learning specific pieces of information. Their success also depends on the severity of associated cognitive failures, in particular, executive dysfunction. However, unless transfer to everyday activities is specifically trained, such strategies are of limited value in promoting independence in daily life. External memory aids are often necessary to allow for independent living. Learning to use them requires intact capacities such as procedural learning or conditioning. This review further discusses the rehabilitation of confabulation, that is, the emergence of memories of events that never happened. The rehabilitation of memory disorders needs to be tailored to patients’ individual capacities and needs.

Abstract
This study aimed to compare the efficacy of three skills training methods (Trial and error TEL; systematic instruction SI; and error-based learning EBL) for training the use of a smartphone reminder app in individuals with an acquired brain injury. Participants (N = 38, Mage = 61.21 years, 71.1% stroke) were randomly allocated to one of three training conditions and trained over one two-hour session. Proficiency of performance with the trained app (primary outcome) was assessed immediately post-training, one- and six-weeks post-intervention. Secondary outcomes included generalization of skills, error commission, smartphone use frequency and confidence, and subjective memory complaints. Proficiency with the trained app after TEL was higher than SI immediately after the training (d = 0.87) and EBL at the one-week follow-up (d = 0.98). No differences were found six-weeks post-training. Smartphone use confidence increased at the six-week follow-up after TEL (d = 1.12) and EBL training (d = 0.91) but not after SI (d = 0.26). Self-reported memory complaints decreased across time for all groups (ηp2 = 0.30). There was no clearly superior training method for optimizing proficiency with the reminder app. The expected benefits of SI and EBL may not have emerged due to the single-session format of the training. However, smartphone training via TEL or EBL has the potential to address confidence-related barriers to smartphone use.

Abstract
Memory impairment following an acquired brain injury can negatively impact daily living and quality of life—but can be reduced by memory rehabilitation. Here, we review the literature on four approaches for memory rehabilitation and their associated strategies: (1) the restorative approach, aimed at a return to pre-morbid functioning, (2) the knowledge acquisition approach, involving training on specific information relevant to daily life, (3) the compensatory approach, targeted at improving daily functioning, and (4) the holistic approach, in which social, emotional, and behavioral deficits are addressed alongside cognitive consequences of acquired brain injury. Each memory rehabilitation approach includes specific strategies such as drill and practice (restorative), spaced retrieval (knowledge acquisition), memory aids (compensatory), or a combination of psychotherapy and cognitive strategies (holistic). Past research has demonstrated mixed support for the use of restorative strategies to improve memory function, whereas knowledge acquisition strategies show promising results on trained tasks but little generalization to untrained tasks and activities of daily living. Compensatory strategies remain widely used but require intensive training to be effectively employed. Finally, the holistic approach is becoming more widespread due to improvements in psychosocial wellbeing, yet there are considerable resource and cost requirements. Several factors can influence rehabilitation outcomes including metacognition and emotional disturbances. Considerations for future research to improve the applicability of strategies for memory rehabilitation include assessing memory impairment severity, examining memory needs in daily life, and exploring the long-term effects of memory rehabilitation.

Abstract
People with memory impairments following an acquired brain injury stand to benefit from smartphone apps as memory aids. Due, in part, to usability issues they use smartphone-based reminding less than the general population. Evidence suggests this group may benefit from user interface (UI) designs with more screens with less information per screen (narrow-deep UI) rather than fewer screens with more information per screen (broad-shallow UI). This study compared the difference in speed, accuracy, guidance needed, and task load for 32 people with acquired brain injury when setting reminders using narrow-deep and broad-shallow UI. They were also given cognitive assessments (measuring selective attention, executive functioning, and overall executive and memory ability) and interviewed about their UI preference. There was a significant difference in accuracy; participants were less accurate (they made two more errors on average for every three reminders set) using a broad-shallow compared to narrow-deep UI. The reason for this difference was that participants omitted more information when using broad-shallow UI. There were no differences in speed, guidance required, and overall task-load. Participants with better selective attention and more experience with smartphones benefited the most from narrow-deep UI compared to broad-shallow UI. Most participants preferred one UI over the other. Those who preferred narrow-deep found it easier to use, that they missed less information and liked having one piece of information at a time. Those who preferred broad-shallow found it easier to review the information and felt less likely to lose track. The findings can inform that implementation of UI choices to make apps more accessible for those with cognitive impairments.

Abstract
Background and Objectives A systematic review was conducted to explore the use of smartphones and tablet computers as cognitive and memory aids by older adults with and without cognitive impairment, specifically the effects of smartphone and tablet use on participants’ cognition and memory, and the barriers and facilitators to smartphone and tablet use for cognitive and memory support. Research Design and Methods A systematic search of 6 key databases found 11,895 citations published between 2010 and 2021. Studies were included if they involved community-dwelling older adults with or without cognitive impairment arising from acquired brain injury, mild cognitive impairment, or dementia, and if they evaluated everyday smartphone or tablet device use for cognition, memory, or activities of daily living. Results A total of 28 papers were included in the narrative synthesis. There was some evidence that the use of smartphones and tablets could aid cognitive function in older adults without cognitive impairment, particularly executive function and processing speed. There was modest evidence that smartphone and tablet use could support memory in both older adults without cognitive impairment and those with acquired brain injury and dementia. Discussion and Implications Smartphones and tablets were seen by users as acceptable, enjoyable, and nonstigmatizing alternatives to conventional assistive technology devices; however, current use of smartphone and tablet devices is hindered by the digital literacy of older adults, a lack of accommodation for older adult users’ motor and sensory impairments, and a lack of input from clinicians and researchers. Much of the evidence presented in this review derives from case studies and small-scale trials of smartphone and tablet training interventions. Further research is needed into older adults’ use of smartphones and tablets for cognitive support before and after the onset of cognitive impairment in order to develop effective evidence-based smart technology cognition and memory aids.

Abstract
The goal in the rehabilitation of veterans with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is to improve community participation. A tool that can objectively measure community participation is lacking. The aims of this study are to evaluate the feasibility of a smartphone application (app) called MOVES to objectively measure community participation; and compare MOVES with a self-report questionnaire, and differences between veterans with mTBI and civilians without TBI. It is a 6-week parallel observational study, which included seven veterans with blast-related mTBI and five civilians without TBI. The measures include MOVES, Participation Assessment with Recombined Tools-Objective (self-report participation measure), Satisfaction Questionnaire, and Perceived Accuracy Daily Logs. Participants were mostly satisfied using the MOVES app with 75% retention rate. Perceived accuracy of the MOVES app was 90%, while the two groups showed similar discrepancies between the PART-O and the MOVES (52% vs. 53%). The MOVES app is a feasible option to objectively measure community participation. Self-report was discrepant from the MOVES app for both groups.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study explored difficulties in meal preparation experienced by adults with moderate to severe acquired brain injury (ABI) and available compensatory strategies from both ABI individuals' and caregivers' perspectives. Further, this study investigated their opinions on potential benefits, barriers and facilitators to the use of the Cognitive Orthosis for coOKing (COOK) in their living environment. METHODS Using a qualitative descriptive approach, semi-structured individual interviews and focus groups were carried out with adults with moderate to severe ABI (n = 20) and formal and informal caregivers (n = 13) in Ontario and Quebec, Canada. A qualitative analysis based on Miles et al.'s approach was used. RESULTS According to participants, cognitive, physical, psychosocial dysfunctions and lack of availability of supportive caregivers were the main difficulties that impede persons with ABI from engaging effectively in meal preparation tasks. Memory aids on smartphones, and caregivers' direct support were reported as the most commonly used compensatory strategies, though the latter do not provide adequate support. COOK was identified as a technology with great potential to improve independence and increase safety in meal preparation for these clients while decreasing caregiver burden. However, psychosocial issues and limited access to funding were considered as the main barriers to the use of COOK. Providing training and the availability of financial support were mentioned as the main facilitators to the use of this technology. CONCLUSIONS Findings of this study on difficulties of meal preparation following ABI and potential benefits and barriers of COOK will help improve this technology and customize it to the needs of clients with ABI and their caregivers.Implications for RehabilitationCurrent compensatory strategies are not tailored to the specific needs of clients with ABI and cannot provide sufficient support for caregivers.COOK shows a high potential for increasing independence and safety during meal preparation in a living environment for clients with ABI via a sensor-based autonomous safety system and a cognitive assistance application.COOK has the potential to decrease caregivers' burden by proving remote access to a stove/oven.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Smartphone reminding applications can help overcome memory difficulties experienced by people with acquired brain injury (ABI). Cognitive difficulties with memory and attention make entering reminders into a device, and remembering to set reminders, challenging for this group. ApplTree is a reminding app with features that aim to address challenges. One app feature was push notifications (asking "Do you need to set any reminders?") to support people to initiate use of the app to set reminders. Another app feature was a customisable user interface design to support attention and short term memory during reminder setting. METHODS In a mixed-methods user study, five people with self or other reported memory impairment following ABI used ApplTree for at least 4 months. They received push notifications for at least 2 months and no push notifications for at least 2 months. Monthly participant interviews provided insight into user interface preference, app use, and push notification acceptability. RESULTS Receiving four Push notifications per day doubled number of daily reminders set and four of the five participants found receiving them to be acceptable. This long-term field study uncovered issues relevant for clinicians and designers, including insights into the potential benefits of different user interface designs, the impact of family members on app use, and the importance of perceived need influencing use and acceptance. CONCLUSIONS Feedback provided insight into future considerations when designing reminding apps and using them in neuropsychological rehabilitation. This work highlights the benefit of user-led research into accessible design and use of assistive technologies.IMPLICATIONS FOR REHABILITATION"Unsolicited" push prompts are an easy to implement feature of reminding technology that is useful and acceptable for people with ABI in community rehabilitation.Observations provide insights about how people with ABI make use of reminding apps over time. This can inform those designing apps or providing reminding technology as part of neuropsychological rehabilitation.Participants differed on their preference of the two user-interface designs available in ApplTree. This highlights an area for future research because currently available reminding apps have a broad-shallow design which may not always be appropriate for people with ABI.

Abstract
Prospective memory difficulties are commonly reported in people with dementia. The evidence supporting the use of prospective memory devices among the dementia population remains limited. MindMate is a recently developed smart device application that aims to support individuals with a diagnosis of dementia, improving self-management skills and quality of life. This study investigated the effectiveness and usability of the reminder tool on the MindMate application as a memory aid. Three participants with a diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease were recruited to this multiple baseline single-case experimental design study. Partners of the participants recorded their performance on everyday tasks on weekly monitoring forms during a baseline phase (between five and seven weeks) and during the intervention phase (five weeks) whilst using MindMate. Two participants successfully used the app throughout the intervention weeks and gave positive usability ratings. Tau-U analysis showed a significant increase in memory performance between baseline and intervention phase (Tau-U = 1, 0.94, p < .01). A third participant withdrew from the intervention phase following difficulties turning off the reminders and frustrations with the reminder alert sound. For two of the three participants, use of MindMate was feasible and effective in supporting remembering of everyday tasks compared to practice as usual.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Persons with moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) face issues with health, wellness, and safety that affect their ability to independently manage their care, even for individuals who are ≥75% independent in activities of daily living. These issues often lead to increased family involvement in managing the person's condition after discharge home. PURPOSE We explored health, wellness, and safety concerns after discharge home from inpatient rehabilitation from the perspectives of persons with TBI who are ≥75% independent in activities of daily living and their family caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS We interviewed 27 persons with TBI and family caregivers and used conventional content analysis to analyse the data. RESULTS Seven themes related to health, wellness, and safety encompassed participants' experience. Health themes included: (1) attempting to manage medications and (2) navigating mental health difficulties. Wellness themes included: (1) working to stay physically active, (2) dealing with sleep and sleeplessness, and (3) adjusting to changing social relationships. Safety themes were: (1) addressing mobility challenges and (2) compensating for complications with cognitive functioning. CONCLUSIONS Findings can guide the development of tools, supports, and resources to promote health, wellness, and safety of persons with TBI as they recover after discharge home.Implications for rehabilitationFindings on numerous concerns related to health, wellness, and safety suggest the need for implementation or development and testing of tools, supports, and resources to promote health, wellness, and safety of persons with traumatic brain injury as they recover after discharge home.Our findings can be used to educate healthcare providers and increase awareness of the nuanced challenges patients and families face after discharge home.Findings can also be used by providers to educate patients and families on realistic expectations for life after discharge.

Abstract
Zusammenfassung. Vorgestellt wird die mobile Anwendung RehaGoal App für Menschen mit erworbenen und angeborenen Hirnschädigungen, die Schwierigkeiten bei komplexen Planungsaufgaben haben. Für die Entwicklung der RehaGoal App wurde sich am Vorgehen des Goal Management Trainings orientiert, bei dem die Zerlegung eines übergeordneten Ziels in Teilziele und überschaubare Schritte zu deren Erreichung im Vordergrund steht. Bisher wurde dieses Vorgehen papiergestützt eingesetzt, was die Übertragung in den Alltag erschwert. Daher wurde die RehaGoal App, die auf verschiedenen digitalen Endgeräten wie Smartphones, Smartwatches etc. genutzt werden kann, entwickelt. Bei unserer Zielgruppe liegen häufig zusätzliche Einschränkungen vor, daher verfügt die RehaGoal App über eine barrierearme Gestaltung, eine Sprachausgabe, visuelle Darstellungsmöglichkeiten, eine nutzerabhängige Darstellung, eine einfache Menüführung und ein Autorensystem.

Abstract
Purpose: Memory impairment can necessitate use of external memory aids to preserve functional independence. As external aids can be difficult to learn and remember to use, technology may improve the efficacy of current rehabilitation strategies. We detail the iterative development of a digital application of a paper-and-pencil memory notebook.Methods: Twenty participants (aged 54+) of varying levels of cognitive ability were recruited for four iterations of usability testing (five participants per iteration). Each participant completed a series of tasks using the digital memory notebook (DMN), followed by questionnaires that assessed satisfaction (Questionnaire for User Interface Satisfaction) and usability ratings (Post-Study System Usability Questionnaire) for the application.Results and Conclusions: Between Iterations 2 and 5, participants demonstrated marked reductions in time to complete several types of tasks (e.g., add event, navigate interface) using the DMN. Participants in Iteration 5 also rated all subscales of both the usability and satisfaction questionnaires very highly. Faster task completion times were correlated with more favourable system ratings. However, neither task performance times nor system ratings were correlated with cognitive abilities, scheduling tool use or comfort with technology. Both the questionnaire and performance-based data indicate the final iteration of the DMN was easy to use. Furthermore, the application was user-friendly despite individual differences in cognitive ability, familiarity with scheduling tools and comfort with technology. Future work will demonstrate whether the DMN will support everyday retrospective and prospective memory lapses and increase the functional independence and quality of life for persons with cognitive impairment.Implications for rehabilitationBuilding on practice standards and user-centred design, the digital memory notebook (DMN) application is an "all-in-one" memory aid and organizational tool with an intuitive interface designed to help improve everyday functioning.The DMN's today page, to do list and calendar functions can support everyday prospective and retrospective memory abilities.The DMN's notes, journaling and motivational functions can support longer-term goal planning and mood management.The DMN's alarm functions can support learning to use the DMN and serve as reminders to support prospective memory and aid in activity completion.

Abstract
This study aimed to examine whether people with subjective memory decline (SMD) benefit from face-name memory training (single session) as much as older adult controls in an office-based setting. Approximately 2 months later, groups were reassessed for translation to a naturalistic setting. In the office setting, there was a significant interaction between stimulus type (cued name; uncued name) and training condition (spaced retrieval, semantic association, no training), but no group differences nor interactions. Semantic association was only beneficial for cued names, whereas spaced retrieval was beneficial in cued and uncued conditions. In the naturalistic setting, however, there were no training effects. Naturalistic performance was predicted by demographics, cognition, and motivation. All groups reported improved memory control beliefs and contentment. Our study demonstrates the benefit of simple memory strategies for older adults, including those with SMD, in office-based settings. Translation to everyday settings is complex and may require prior intervention to increase motivation.
