Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the persistence of visual symptoms in mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI) during the first months after injury. It is important to recognize visual disturbances because they can delay return to normal activities, while they might be simultaneously treated by visual therapy. Here we describe the results from a 1-year follow-up study of visual disturbances after MTBI. PARTICIPANTS AND MEASURES The study group comprised 26 patients from the Brain Injury Clinic of the Helsinki University Hospital. Inclusion criterion was a high score (≥21p) on the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) at an appointment with a neurologist within 6 months after injury. The patients underwent baseline vision evaluation at 4 months on average and follow-up at 14 months after injury. The evaluation included tests for visual acuity, near point of convergence, convergence facility, near point of accommodation, accommodative facility, motility, heterophoria, binocular vision, dynamic visual acuity, and fusional vergence width at near and far distances. Further assessments included the Rivermead Post Concussion Questionnaire for posttraumatic symptoms, a visual analog scale for visual fatigue, and the Developmental Eye Movement Test for saccadic eye movements. RESULTS Both CISS and Rivermead Post Concussion Questionnaire scores improved significantly from baseline to follow-up. The overall level of visual fatigue according to visual analog scale score was lower at follow-up, but the increase in visual fatigue (comparing fatigue before and after assessment session) was significant both at baseline and follow-up. In visual function assessments, spontaneous recovery from baseline to follow-up could be seen in vergence facility and pursuit eye movement but not in near point of convergence, near fusion, distance fusion, heterophoria, and dynamic visual acuity. CONCLUSION The results point out the importance of evaluation of visual disturbances after MTBI. Early detection of these disturbances may provide an opportunity to provide visual therapy.

Abstract
PURPOSE Describe clinical practice, inter-disciplinary clinical pathway and core principles of care within a mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) rehabilitation team. METHODS An observational study examined inter-disciplinary practice, nested within an observational trial investigating team-based mTBI rehabilitation. Data were collected to describe clinical service over 12 months. Activity data quantified clinical sessions per participant, mode of service delivery and content of sessions using custom-designed codes. The clinical team gathered narrative data to confirm the inter-disciplinary clinical pathway and individual discipline practice. RESULTS 168 participants entered the rehabilitation program during the 12 months. A single Allied Health Screening Assessment identified patient priorities. Occupational Therapy (OT) and Physiotherapy (PT) provided the majority of clinical sessions; the team also comprised Social Work, Rehabilitation Medicine, Speech Pathology and Clinical Psychology. Telehealth was the most common service delivery mode (54%). Median session numbers per participant ranged 1-4 for all disciplines; mean/maximum occasions of service were highest for PT (6.9/44) and OT (6.8/39). CONCLUSION A small proportion of participants received much higher number of sessions, consistent with intractable issues after mTBI. High attendance rates indicate the predominantly telehealth-delivered model was feasible. The clinical approach included early prioritizing of discipline input and follow-up after discharge.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) can cause persistent symptoms suggestive of oculomotor deficits. This research synthesized evidence on restitutive interventions for reducing oculomotor deficits in adults with mTBI to understand if these interventions have clinical utility for improving recovery. METHODS Medline, EMBASE, CINHAL, PsychInfo, and Scopus, databases were searched for experimental studies published in English. We rated risk of bias (RoB) using recommended tools, and the certainty of the evidence according to GRADE guidelines. We conducted meta-analyses for similar outcomes reported in at least two studies. RESULTS Out of 5,328 citations, 12 studies (seven case series and five crossover design), with a combined sample size of 354 participants; (43% males) met the inclusion criteria and were analyzed. The analysis revealed a trend toward improvement of oculomotor deficits and visual tasks in response to restitutive intervention. None of the studies addressed sex or gender effects. All studies had high RoB, suggesting low certainty in the reported results. DISCUSSION Restitutive interventions may be beneficial for adults with oculomotor deficits after mTBI, however overall certainty of the evidence remains low. Future efforts must include enhancing attention to study methodology and reporting, sex and gender analyses, and reaching a consensus on outcome measures. PROSPERO REGISTRATION NUMBER CRD42022352276.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE The number of patients with mild to moderate visual impairments (MVIs) is increasing as the average age of the population increases. Thus, it is important to understand the training and resources available for rehabilitation practitioners to provide adequate care to these patients within their scope of practice. PURPOSE This study explores rehabilitation professionals' perceptions of their competence in screening and treating patients with MVI, and identifying the tools and resources needed to increase these professionals' comfort level in managing these patients. METHODS Data collection was carried via an online questionnaire to Quebec rehabilitation professionals and student-trainees who are members of their respective professional orders. The questionnaire consisted of 29 to 30 questions (open- and close-ended) related to demographics, service provision to MVI patients, education in MVI and future training, and future service delivery to MVI patients. RESULTS Data were collected from 96 professionals, with 52 fully completing the questionnaire, with all the responses included in the analysis. Most respondents had little or no confidence in adequately screening or treating patients with MVI and mentioned that they knew little or nothing about the range of services offered by vision rehabilitation centers in Quebec (81%), whereas 55% at least occasionally offer services to these patients. The majority felt that their profession would benefit from continuing education on MVI (73%), with a marked interest in online training. CONCLUSIONS Rehabilitation professionals in Quebec are not confident in identifying or treating patients presenting MVI but express an interest in attending continuing education courses given by optometrists, low vision professionals, or a member of their own profession. Numerous barriers account for this problem, including a lack of experience and competence in the assessment and treatment options for MVI, as well as a lack of informational and human resources available in their workplaces.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) is the most common form of TBI with many individuals suffering from symptoms suggestive of deficits in oculomotor function. Although the symptoms are often experienced transiently, almost 50% of individuals will experience persistent symptoms. Oculomotor deficits can last months after injury and decrease function and the ability to participate in work, school and sport. To date, rehabilitation interventions targeting oculomotor deficits in mTBI have been reported on in several studies with varying study designs; however, the effectiveness of these interventions on measures of oculomotor function has not been established. The purpose of this paper is to present a protocol for a systematic review that aims to examine the effectiveness of rehabilitation interventions for improving function in adults with oculomotor deficits after mTBI. METHODS AND ANALYSIS Systematic searches in Medline Ovid, EMBASE, PsycINFO, CINAHL and Scopus will be conducted to identify experimental studies published in English from each databases inception date to present, involving adult patients with mTBI and oculomotor deficits. Citations will be saved and managed in EndNote V.20. Two independent reviewers will identify eligible studies and perform data abstraction. Any discrepancies will be solved by discussion, and a third reviewer will be consulted if necessary. A meta-analysis will be conducted for outcomes reported in two or more studies. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis Protocol guidelines will be followed for reporting. ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION This study does not involve primary data collection; therefore, formal ethical approval by an institutional review board is not required. Final results will be disseminated through open-access peer-reviewed publications. Abstracts will be presented at suitable national and international conferences or workshops. Furthermore, important information will be shared with clinical authorities, clinicians and at affiliated research institution-based websites and relevant servers. Abstract
BACKGROUND Children with traumatic dental injuries (TDIs) may simultaneously sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI). The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of concomitant TBI in children with TDIs. METHODS Children (≤ 18 years) who sought treatment at the emergency department of a major children's hospital for TDIs from 2010 through 2019 were identified. Children with a concomitant TBI were assigned as case patients (TDI and TBI). Two control patients (TDI only) were randomly age- and sex-matched with each case patient. Associations between variables of TDI and concomitant TBI were tested using 6 logistic regression models. RESULTS Of 2,126 children with TDIs, 119 had concomitant TBIs (case patients). The control group consisted of 238 children with TDIs only who were age- and sex-matched with case patients. Mean (SD) age of children was 8.9 (4.8) years. Twenty-seven percent of case patients were female vs 32% of control patients. There was a statistically significant direct association between total number of injured teeth and concomitant TBIs (P = .01; odds ratio, 2.42; 95% CI, 1.22 to 4.79). For every tooth injured, the odds of concomitant TBI increased by 45% (P < .001; odds ratio, 1.45; 95% CI, 1.18 to 1.79). Number of displaced teeth, presence of avulsion or intrusion, number of fractured teeth, presence of complicated tooth fracture, and presence of alveolar fracture were not significantly associated with the odds of concomitant TBI. CONCLUSIONS The total number of injured teeth was positively associated with higher odds of concomitant TBI in this setting. PRACTICAL IMPLICATIONS In an emergency department setting, children with various types of TDIs sustained concomitant TBIs. For every tooth injured, the odds of concomitant TBI increased by 45%. Clinicians must systematically evaluate children with any TDI to rule out the possibility of concomitant TBI.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this review is to examine the evidence for the interdisciplinary approach in treatment of persistent post-concussion symptoms in adults. METHODS This systematic literature search was undertaken according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic and Meta-Analysis (PRISMA) guidelines. Five electronic databases were searched: CINAHL, Informit, ProQuest, PubMed and Scopus. After screening and quality assessment, the review included six studies published in English and peer-reviewed journals, between 2011 and 2021 to return contemporary evidence. RESULTS The results revealed that there was significant variation between measures used and the timing of the pre- and post-treatment assessment. The studies found an interdisciplinary approach to be beneficial, however, the challenges of inherent heterogeneity, lack of clarity for definitions and diagnosis, and mixed results were apparent. The interdisciplinary interventions applied in all identified studies were found to reduce post-concussion symptoms across the symptom subtypes: headache/migraine, vestibular, cognitive, ocular motor and anxiety/mood. CONCLUSIONS The results demonstrated evidence for a reduction in persistent post-concussion symptoms following interdisciplinary intervention. This evidence will inform health services, clinicians, sports administrators and researchers with regard to concussion clinic and rehabilitation team design and service delivery.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Traumatic brain injury (TBI) can trigger vision-based sequelae such as oculomotor and accommodative abnormalities, visual-vestibular integrative dysfunction, visual field loss, and photosensitivity. The need for diagnosis and management of TBI-related vision impairment has increased because of the increasing frequencies of combat warfighters returning from Iraq and Afghanistan with TBIs. The purpose of this research was to learn the sequelae of rehabilitation service delivery to veterans with TBI-related visual dysfunction after they are diagnosed. To accomplish this, we investigated vision rehabilitation assessments and interventions provided to veterans with TBI-related visual dysfunction at the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) specialty polytrauma facilities for the 2 years following their injury. The research questions asked what assessments, interventions, and prescribed assistive devices were provided by VA specialty clinics (e.g., occupational therapy, polytrauma, and blind rehabilitation) and how service delivery was affected by demographic and clinical variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS A retrospective design was used to analyze VA data using natural language processing of unstructured clinician notes and logistic regression of structured data. Participants included 350 veterans with TBI who received rehabilitation at one of the five VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers (Tampa, FL; Richmond, VA; Minneapolis, MN; San Antonio, TX; and Palo Alto, CA) between 2008 and 2017 and who were administered the 2008 congressionally mandated "Traumatic Brain Injury Specific Ocular Health and Visual Functioning Exam." The outcome variables were vision assessments, interventions, and prescribed assistive technology discovered via natural language processing of clinician notes as well as the vision rehabilitation specialty clinics providing the clinical care (polytrauma, occupational therapy, outpatient blind rehabilitation, inpatient blind rehabilitation, optometry, and low vision) extracted from VA structured administrative data. RESULTS Veterans receiving rehabilitation for TBI-related vision dysfunction were most frequently assessed for saccades, accommodation, visual field, and convergence. Intervention was provided most frequently for eye-hand coordination, saccades, accommodation, vergence, and binocular dysfunction. Technology provided included eyeglasses, wheelchair/scooter, walker/cane, aids for the blind, and computer. There was an overlap in the services provided by specialty clinics. Services available and delivered were significantly associated with the comorbidities of each patient and the specialty clinics available at each VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Center. CONCLUSIONS The delivery of patient services should be driven by the needs of veterans and not by system-level factors such as the availability of specific vision rehabilitation services at specific locations. Traditional low vision and blind rehabilitation programs were not designed to treat the comorbidities and symptoms associated with TBI. To address this challenge, blind rehabilitation and neurologic recovery cross training is needed. Our findings document how five VA Polytrauma Rehabilitation Centers implemented this training in 2008. The next step is to extend and standardize this new paradigm to community care, where these post-deployment patients now reside.

Abstract
Objective A latent disease explanation cannot exclusively explain post-concussion symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). Network analysis offers an alternative form of explanation for relationships between symptoms. The study aimed to apply network analysis to post-concussion symptoms in two different mTBI cohorts; an acute treatment-seeking sample and a sample 10 years post-mTBI. Method The treatment-seeking sample (n = 258) were on average 6 weeks post-injury; the 10 year post mTBI sample (n = 193) was derived from a population-based incidence and outcomes study (BIONIC). Network analysis was completed on post-concussion symptoms measured using the Rivermead Post-Concussion Questionnaire. Results In the treatment-seeking sample, frustration, blurred vision, and concentration difficulties were central to the network. These symptoms remained central in the 10 year post mTBI sample. A Network Comparison Test revealed evidence of a difference in network structure across the two samples (p = 0.045). However, the only symptoms that showed significant differences in strength centrality across samples were irritability and restlessness. Conclusion The current findings suggest that frustration, blurred vision and concentration difficulties may have an influential role in the experience and maintenance of post-concussion symptoms. The impact of these symptoms may remain stable over time. Targeting and prioritising the management of these symptoms may be beneficial for mTBI rehabilitation.

Abstract
Mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and whiplash injury (WI) may lead to long-term disabling consequences known as post-concussive syndrome (PCS) and whiplash-associated disorders (WADs). PCS and WAD patients commonly complain of conditions encompassing dizziness, vertigo, headache, neck pain, visual complaints, anxiety, and neurocognitive dysfunctions. A proper medical work-up is a priority in order to rule out any acute treatable consequences. However investigations may remain poorly conclusive. Gathered in the head and neck structures, the ocular sensorimotor, the vestibular, and the cervical proprioceptive systems, all involved in postural control, may be damaged by mTBI or WI. Their dysfunctions are associated with a wide range of functional disorders including symptoms reported by PCS and WAD patients. In addition, the stomatognathic system needs to be specifically assessed particularly when associated to WI. Evidence for considering the post-traumatic impairment of these systems in PCS and WAD-related symptoms is still lacking but seems promising. Furthermore, few studies have considered the assessment and/or treatment of these widely interconnected systems from a comprehensive perspective. We argue that further research focusing on consequences of mTBI and WI on the systems involved in the postural control are necessary in order to bring new perspective of treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Prior studies have detected topological changes of brain functional networks in patients with acute mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, the alterations of dynamic topological characteristics in mTBI have been scarcely elucidated. PURPOSE To evaluate static and dynamic functional connectivity topological networks in patients with acute mTBI using resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 55 patients with acute mTBI and 55 age-, sex-, and education-matched healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled in this study. All participants underwent resting-state fMRI scans, and data were analyzed using graph-theory methods and a sliding window approach. Post-traumatic cognitive performance and resting-state fMRI data were collected within one week after injury. Static and dynamic functional connectivity patterns were determined by independent component analysis. Spearman's correlation analysis was further performed between fMRI changes and Montreal cognitive assessment (MoCA) scores. RESULTS Global efficiency was lower (P = 0.02), and local efficiency (P < 0.001) and mean Cp (P < 0.001) were higher in patients with acute mTBI than in HCs. Local efficiency was correlated with visuospatial/executive performance (r = -0.421; P = 0.002) in patients with acute mTBI. Significant differences in nodal efficiency and node degree centrality (P < 0.01) were found between the mTBI and HC groups. For dynamic properties, patients with mTBI showed higher variance (P = 0.016) in global efficiency than HCs. CONCLUSIONS The present study shows that patients with mTBI have abnormal brain functional connectome topology, especially the dynamic graph theory characteristics, which provide new insights into the role of topological network properties in patients with acute mTBI.

Abstract
Extended reality (XR) devices, including virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) devices, are immersive technologies that can swap or merge the natural environment with virtual content (e.g., videogames, movies, or other content). Although these devices are widely used for playing videogames and other applications, they have one distinct feature that makes them potentially very useful for the measurement and treatment of binocular vision anomalies-they can deliver different content to the two eyes simultaneously. Indeed, horizontally shifting the images in the two eyes (thereby creating binocular disparity) can provide the user with a compelling percept of depth through stereopsis. Because these devices are stereoscopic, they can also be used as high-tech synoptophores, in which the images to the two eyes differ in contrast, luminance, size, position, and content for measuring and treating binocular anomalies. The inclusion of eye tracking in VR adds an additional dimension to its utility in measuring and treating binocular vision anomalies, as well as other conditions. This paper describes the essential requirements for testing and treating binocular anomalies and reviews current studies in which XR devices have been used to measure and treat binocular vision anomalies.

Abstract
Background Visual perception is a dynamic process of perceiving the environment through sensory input and transforming sensory input into meaningful concepts related to environmental visual knowledge. Many studies focusing on the role of visual perception after stroke have been published in various journals. However, a bibliometric analysis in the domain of visual perception after stroke is still lacking. This study aimed to deliver a visual analysis to analyze the global trends in research on the role of visual perception after stroke in the last 10 years. Methods The literature was derived from the Web of Science core collection database from 2012 to 2021. The collected material was limited to English articles and reviews. CiteSpace and Microsoft Excel were used for bibliographic analysis. Results A total of 298 articles were included in the analysis. The annual number of publications increased from 23 to 42 in the last decade. Rehabilitation was the main research hotspot (n = 85). Journal of Physical Therapy Science published the largest number of papers (n = 14). The most influential author, institution, and country were Rowe FJ (n = 17), League of European Research Universities (n = 45), and England (n = 54), respectively. The keywords with the longest burst period are field defect, hemineglect, disorder, and quality of life. Conclusion This study analyzes the papers on the role of visual perception after stroke in the past 10 years and provides a new perspective for research in this field. At present, the number of articles in this field is not large and the cooperation network is not close enough. In the future, it is necessary to strengthen the cooperation among various countries, institutions, and authors. In addition, large samples and randomized controlled trials are needed to identify the potential treatments and pathophysiology for visual perceptual impairment after stroke.

Abstract
The eyeballs are often the only way to communicate messages as a result of brain damage. However, it is not uncommon for them to become dysfunctional, thus requiring the introduction of appropriate therapy. The trajectory of eye movements (saccadic movements and gaze fixation) during observation of a static and dynamic point presented with an eye tracker was analyzed in the present study. Twelve patients with brain injury of different etiology, with different degrees of consciousness disorders and not communicating through verbal and motor skills, qualified for the study. All participants demonstrated greater eye movement activity when presented with a dynamic task in which they observed a moving point. The findings suggest that effective eye movement therapy must incorporate dynamic stimuli.

Abstract
ABSTRACT In the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation, there is a continuous need to conduct literature search in advancing evidence-based practice. In addition to the traditional meta-analysis approach, many clinicians have turned their attention to systematic reviews and scoping reviews for research evidence to support clinical practice. In this article, the authors aimed to (1) compare the similarities, differences, pros, and cons between a scoping review, a systematic review, and a meta-analysis and (2) summarize the fundamental stages in conducting a scoping review. Examples of recently published articles relevant to physical medicine and rehabilitation are presented to illustrate the concept and value of scoping reviews.

Abstract
Mild traumatic brain injury accounts for an estimated 4.8 million cases of pediatric traumatic brain injuries worldwide every year. In the United States, 70% of mild traumatic brain injury cases are due to sports and recreational injuries. Early diagnosis, especially in active children, is critical to preventing recurrent injuries. Management is guided by graded protocols for returning to school and activity. Ninety percent of children recover within 1 month of injury. Promising research has shown that early referral to specialty concussion care and multidisciplinary treatment with physical and occupational therapy may shorten recovery time and improve neurologic outcomes.

Abstract
Around 1.5 million Canadians live with some form of vision impairment. The demand for vision rehabilitation (VR) services is projected to increase as the number of older adults with age-related vision loss rises. To inform programmes and policies for VR, we aimed to answer two research questions: (1) How are VR services delivered in Canada? and (2) If gaps exist in current delivery of VR services, how can they be characterized? We used Arksey and O’Malley scoping review framework. A comprehensive search of five databases (PubMed, CINAHL/EBSCO, EMBASE, ProQuest, and Global Health) was performed during January 2019 and then updated in March 2021. Index terms and keywords relating to vision loss or impairment and rehabilitation were used. Non-peer-reviewed (grey) literature, in the form of reports and policies on VR in Canada, was sourced via Google/Google Scholar. To be included, sources had to (1) focus on VR services in Canada, (2) be available in English or French, and (3) be published after 2003. Data were extracted and analysed thematically to describe VR services across provinces and to identify gaps in service delivery in Canada. Out of 1311 studies identified, 62 were included. Findings indicate that the structure of VR services as well as provincial funding for assistive devices varies across provinces. The reported gaps at the level of service providers, users, and delivery systems were lack of awareness about the benefits of VR, limited collaboration and coordinated services between eye care and VR services, delayed referral to VR, shortage of specialists, and insufficient funding and training for vision devices. This article describes VR services in Canada and documents important gaps in VR services and research evidence across provincial jurisdictions. Future work to address gaps, and develop and evaluate interventions to facilitate optimal VR services is imperative.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of the study was to (1) examine the relationship between self-reported symptoms and concussion-related eye tracking impairments, and (2) compare gait performance between (a) adolescents with a concussion who have normal eye tracking, (b) adolescents with a concussion who have abnormal eye tracking, and (c) healthy controls. METHODS A total of 30 concussed participants (age: 14.4 ± 2.2 years, mean ± SD, 50% female) and 30 controls (age: 14.2 ± 2.2 years, 47% female) completed eye tracking and gait assessments. The BOX score is a metric of pupillary disconjugacy, with scores <10 classified as normal and ≥10 abnormal. Symptoms were collected using the Post-Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS), and gait speed was measured with triaxial inertial measurement units. We conducted a linear regression to examine the relationship between PCSS and BOX scores and a two-way mixed effects analysis of variance to examine the effect of group (abnormal BOX, normal BOX, and healthy control) on single- and dual-task gait speed. RESULTS There was a significant association between total PCSS score and BOX score in the concussion group (β = 0.16, p = 0.004, 95% confidence interval (95%CI): 0.06‒0.27), but not in the control group (β = 0.21, p = 0.08, 95%CI: -0.03 to 0.45). There were no significant associations between PCSS symptom profiles and BOX scores in the concussion or control groups. There were also no significant differences in single-task (Abnormal: 1.00 ± 0.14 m/s; Normal: 1.11 ± 0.21 m/s; Healthy: 1.14 ± 0.18 m/s; p = 0.08) or dual-task (Abnormal: 0.77 ± 0.15 m/s; Normal: 0.84 ± 0.21 m/s; Healthy: 0.90 ± 0.18 m/s; p = 0.16) gait speed. CONCLUSION The concussed group with impaired eye tracking reported higher total symptom severity, as well as worse symptom severity across the 5 PCSS symptom domain profiles. However, eye tracking deficits did not appear to be driven by any particular symptom domain. While not statistically significant, the slower gait speeds in those with abnormal BOX scores may still be clinically relevant since gait-related impairments may persist beyond clinical recovery.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Acquired brain injury affects many brain areas and causes a range of dysfunctions including vision-related issues. These issues can have negative impacts on rehabilitation progress and activities of daily life but may easily be overlooked. There is no common recommendation about how to assess visual impairments after ABI. The purpose of this study was to estimate the frequency of objectively measures oculomotor dysfunctions, and also how these findings are related to two inventories intended to support detection of visual impairment. METHODS The study was cross-sectional and included 73 outpatients. In addition to the standard evaluation program, the patients went through a comprehensive optometric examination. The inventories used were the Vision Interview (VI) and the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS). RESULTS All three types of examinations showed a high proportion vision-related symptoms. Fusion vergence was the most common objectively measured finding, 83%. There were seven statistically significant associations between five VI items and five visual deficits. The strength of associations was moderate (Phi 0.261-0.487, p < .05). The sensitivity and specificity of the CISS were moderate. CONCLUSION We found high percentages of the patients with visual symptoms and dysfunctions. Due to the complexity of visual symptoms and functional deficits in ABI, we find it necessary to combine both symptom assessment and vision examination in order to capture visual function issues.

Purpose of review Currently, a lack of guidelines exists regarding best practices for occupational therapists (OTs) in the treatment and evaluation of oculomotor dysfunction following traumatic brain injury (TBI). Furthermore, individuals with TBI would benefit significantly from collaboration between OTs and optometrists during inpatient rehab. Recent findings Although few articles examine interdisciplinary models of inpatient rehab care that include optometry, a recent pilot study is explored. Emerging evidence from the field of optometry supports the use of restorative approaches for oculomotor impairment in mild TBI; however, cases with moderate to severe TBI are not addressed. Summary We describe an interdisciplinary approach involving collaboration between optometry and occupational therapy, yielding a comprehensive model to effectively evaluate and treat oculomotor impairments in those with TBI and facilitate improved performance in daily activities. We also provide guidelines useful for OTs working in settings where collaboration with optometry is not feasible.

Abstract
Introduction: Oculomotor (OM) functions may be affected by acquired brain injury (ABI). The ability to benefit from rehabilitation or to perform daily activities may be affected by OM dysfunctions and associated symptoms. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of vision therapy (VT) as part of neurorehabilitation after ABI.Materials and Methods: The study included two groups of outpatients (median 49.5-52.0 years, range 27-67) admitted to neurorehabilitation due to moderate to severe ABI. One group received VT while the other group served as controls to monitor the course of OM dysfunctions without VT.Results: The intervention group showed significant improvements in convergence (Z = 2.26, p = .02), vergence facility (Z = -2.16, p = .03) and vergence reserves (Z = -2.44, p < .01 and t = -4.47, DF = 15, p < .01) along with a significant reduction in vision-related symptoms (Z = 2.97, p < .01).Discussion: We conclude that OM issues were frequent and that targeted VT, as part of neurorehabilitation, can be an efficient treatment resulting in improved functions and reduced symptoms. Further study will be required to understand how improved functions link to performance and satisfaction with everyday activities.

Abstract
This case report describes the outcome of vision therapy for three patients who were referred to therapy due to visual symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (MTBI). The criterion for inclusion was a high score (>21p) on the Convergence Insufficiency Symptom Survey (CISS) scale. The vision therapy program (VTP) included both face-to-face sessions and home-based tasks. Cases #1 and #2 had a substantial CISS scale evaluation improvement, and case #2 normalized the CISS scale score from 36 to 19. All patients agreed that vision therapy helped them understand their own vision and changes in their vision, which helped their overall recovery after MTBI. Rehabilitation professionals have an important role in screening for vision impairments and treating functional vision challenges after mild traumatic brain injury.

Abstract
Sport-related concussion is an important condition that can affect collegiate and professional athletes. Expert consensus guidelines currently suggest that all athletes who sustain acute concussion be managed with a conservative approach consisting of relative rest and gradual resumption of school and sport activities with active intervention reserved for those with persistent post-concussion symptoms lasting >10-14 days for adults. Unfortunately, these recommendations place little emphasis on the rapid physical deconditioning that occurs in athletes within days of exercise cessation or the pathophysiological processes responsible for acute concussion symptoms that can be successfully targeted by evidence-based rehabilitation strategies. Based on our evolving approach to patients with persistent post-concussion symptoms, we now present an updated physiological approach to the initial medical assessment, rehabilitation, and multi-disciplinary management of collegiate and professional athletes with acute concussion. Utilizing the results of a careful clinical history, comprehensive physical examination and graded aerobic exercise testing, we outline how team physicians, and athletic training staff can partner with multi-disciplinary experts in traumatic brain injury to develop individually tailored rehabilitation programs that target the main physiological causes of acute concussion symptoms (autonomic nervous system dysfunction/exercise intolerance, vestibulo-ocular dysfunction, and cervical spine dysfunction) while maintaining the athlete's physical fitness during the recovery period. Considerations for multi-disciplinary medical clearance of collegiate and professional athletes as well as the application of this approach to non-elite athletes are also discussed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To improve visual performance and perception in stroke patients suffering from visual impairments by the use of therapist-assisted vision therapy. METHODS This study was an interventional efficacy open-label investigation. The vision therapy was designed to enhance binocular vision, and saccadic ability, and vergence ranges maximally, and for patients with hemianopia also to improve peripheral awareness. The vision training consisted of one lesson a week for 12 weeks carried out by an optometrist and a vision therapist. Between lessons, patients were to train at home for a minimum of 15-20 min daily. RESULTS Twenty-four patients completed the course. Significant improvements in visual performance were measured for all test parameters from the baseline to the evaluation after the last lesson of vision training. The COPM results improved both in terms of satisfaction with the completion of a task and with the way the task was carried out (p = 0.001). Groffman tracing test results improved from median 7.5 to 16 (p = 0.002), reading speed in words increased (p = 0.0004), and peripheral awareness of visual markers improved (p = 0.002). CONCLUSION Therapist-assisted vision therapy increased peripheral visual awareness. Furthermore patients felt safer in the traffic and in outdoor activities. Reading speed significantly increased, and the ability to keep a moving object in focus improved.
