Working as a cancer survivor in Romania: an overview of the statutory policies for return to work

Blaming the young is always more accessible rather than accusing the older employees: an experimental view over age and health in organizations

Introduction

The stereotype content model postulates that different groups evoke different emotions and reactions based on two dimensions: intention toward others (warmth) and competence.

Methods

In this study, we used an experimental design and a qualitative approach to investigate how managerial strategies are selected and motivated when a subordinate makes a work task related error but belongs to a group that is stereotypical perceived differently in terms of warmth and competence (age groups with or without a medical condition). Thus 75 employees analyzed one of the five hypothetical cases and described the managerial strategy and motivation for usage.

Results

Data revealed that managerial strategies incorporate more active harm elements for younger employees in contrast with vulnerable groups (older employees with unspecified medical conditions, younger or older employees with a medical condition), who benefit from more active facilitation strategies. The strategy usage motivation is also different in the case of younger employees, the control group and the vulnerable groups.

Discussion

The study outcomes bring additional evidence to support the stereotype content model theory and the socioemotional selectivity theory, enriching applicability on organizational practice and human resources management.

Proceedings of the International Scientific Conference “Cancer, Work & Employment”

This paper is an overview of the International Scientific Conference on “Cancer, Work & Employment” that was held in Paris on November 21 and 22, 2022, and organized by the French National Cancer Institute (INCa). The conference was structured around four keynote presentations and two roundtables, with renowned international speakers. The focus of this conference was to discuss the challenges of return or access to work and job retention when facing cancer, from interdisciplinary perspectives (e.g., psychology, sociology, economics). Speakers analyzed return-to-work (RTW) determinants for cancer patients, with a particular focus on specific forms of cancer, working conditions (e.g., self-employment, adaptations at work when returning), and the influence of differences in social welfare systems. Current interventions to support RTW were analyzed, from the patient’s point of view and in terms of improving healthcare professionals’ practices. Prospects for future research in the field were also discussed (e.g., focus on underrepresented populations, considering the influence of longer treatments, incorporating changes in career paths). Finally, the broad spectrum of disciplines and the diversity in involved countries offered a rare opportunity to exchange ideas and helped initiate collaboration between participants.

Rare cancer and return to work: experiences and needs of patients and (health care) professionals

PURPOSE

Patients with a rare cancer often face delays in their diagnostic and treatment trajectory, which may affect their work. In this study, we explored experiences and needs of: 1) patients with a rare cancer regarding return to work (RTW) and work retention, and 2) (health care) professionals (HCPs) regarding work-related support of patients with a rare cancer, throughout their disease trajectory.

METHODS

Semi-structured, in-depth interviews with working-age patients with a rare cancer (n = 16), and HCPs (n = 9) were conducted. During the interviews, a predefined topic list was used. Interviews were transcribed verbatim and analysed by means of thematic analysis.

RESULTS

In total, three themes emerged from the interviews: 1) Awareness in patients and HCPs as a first step towards work, 2) Being/becoming an expert is a tough job, and 3) Enhancing employability through early personalized guidance.

CONCLUSIONS

Patients with a rare cancer are confronted with uncertainties regarding work, due to an overall lack of knowledge and experience with these types of cancer. Raising awareness among patients, HCPs and employers about rare cancer and its implications, and providing timely individualized, supportive occupational care are required to improve rare cancer patients' ability to work.Implications for rehabilitationRecognizing and paying attention to the work-related consequences of a rare cancer diagnosis and its treatment is essential to facilitate rare cancer patients' occupational rehabilitation process.Multidisciplinary collaboration and involvement of HCPs specialized in rare cancer are required to provide suitable work-related support.A personalized approach is necessary to adequately address rare cancer patients' RTW and work retention needs.
