On the advantage of autobiographical memory pliability: implantation of positive self-defining memories reduces trait anxiety

A systematic review of self-concept change in multiple sclerosis

Self-concept or sense of self is often altered in the context of neurological illness. Yet, these core aspects of subjective experience are poorly understood for people with multiple sclerosis (MS). This systematic review aimed to synthesize the findings of quantitative and qualitative studies investigating self-concept in MS. PsycINFO, MEDLINE (PubMed), CINAHL, Scopus, and Web of Science were last systematically searched in May 2021, with the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool and Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualiatative Research used to appraise the quality of the eligible articles. Articles were included if they measured or explored self-concept in MS populations, were published in English and peer-reviewed. A total of 30 studies (11 quantitative, 19 qualitative) were identified. Quantitative studies were synthesized using a narrative approach, with results suggesting that MS is associated with some degree of self-concept change. Qualitative studies were synthesized using thematic synthesis, with results illustrating a complex process of self-concept change that is catalyzed by MS-related events and characterized by varying degrees of resistance to, or acknowledgement of, such changes. Future prospective longitudinal studies are needed to characterize the nature of self-concept change in MS using validated tools that measure relevant aspects of self-concept for the MS population.

Cultural patterns in autobiographical memory of childhood: Comparison of Chinese, Russian, and Uzbek samples

In the present study, I examined whether the regular patterns of variables that referred to mental representation of the entire childhood in young adults might be associated with the different types of cultural selves proposed by Kagitcibasi's model of family change. In this model, three types of cultural selves (heteronomous-related self, autonomous-separated self, and autonomous-related self) are merged with culturally specific styles of parenting and childhood experience. Chinese, Russian, and Uzbekistani participants (N = 439) visualized their childhood on timelines. The exploratory factor analysis suggested a three-factor solution. Factor 1 combined memories of achievements and vicarious memories; that is, memories representing events that happened to other people. In my point of view, in contrast to "we-memories," vicarious memories portray a readiness to view other people as a valuable part of one's own life, but in the context of well-defined self-boundaries. Therefore, they denote the kind of relatedness which does not contradict autonomy. Because Factor 1 was found to be the most articulated in the Chinese sample, it was linked to the autonomous-related self, with the focus on directive function of autobiographical memory. Factor 2 was composed of the abundance of recollections, the early age of first memory, and prolonged childhood. Due to the highest scores being achieved on Factor 2 in the Russian sample, it was attributed to the autonomous-separated self, employing predominantly a self-reflective function of autobiographical memory. Factor 3 consisted of memories of attending social groups, positive emotional bias, and a tendency to mention one's own birth. Taking into account that the Uzbeks achieved the highest scores on this factor, it was interpreted as a mnemonic database of a heteronomous-related self, predominantly associated with social bonding and emotion regulation functions. Taken together, the findings highlight the assumption that childhood memories reveal a cultural self.

Use, Adaptivity, and Need Fulfillment: A Methodological Critique of Tests of the Functions of Autobiographical Memory

In this article, we champion the study of autobiographical memory functions. We review the proposed functions and how they have been investigated. We describe seven commonly used research designs. We argue that although each design offers unique benefits, none of these designs is ideally suited to test the functional nature of autobiographical memory with high internal validity. We stress that each design does have a unique set of benefits in the exploration of autobiographical memory and none should be abandoned. However, we encourage researchers interested in function in particular to consider designs that will illuminate the use, adaptivity, and fulfillment of needs that is inherent in the definition of function.

Fibromyalgia patients make scarce reference to pain in self-defining memories

OBJECTIVE

Self-defining memories (SDMs) are vivid, emotionally intense and well-rehearsed autobiographical memories that provide fundamental information about one's cognitive affective motivational representation of self. Exploring SDMs in fibromyalgia (FM) is of interest for understanding the psychopathology of this disorder and improving clinical interventions. Our aim was to compare patients and healthy controls (HC) on SDM characteristics.

METHOD

We included 25 patients with FM and 24 HC matched for age, sex and education level. Each participant described five SDMs, which were coded for content, specificity, integration, tension, redemption, contamination, affective response, date, and reference to pain. We statistically controlled our results for the most plausible confounding factors related to FM that could affect SDM recall, namely depression, anxiety, cognitive inhibition, pain severity and medication.

RESULTS

Compared with HC, patients retrieved less specific SDMs with a more negative emotional valence but less tension. They reported more relationship-related memories, and fewer redemptive ones, with less meaning-making. The number of memories referring to physical or psychological pain did not differ between groups. None of the confounding factors we analysed could explain (either alone or in combination) the statistical differences between groups for SDMs characteristics.

CONCLUSION

We discuss functional avoidance and alexithymia as two main factors for poor reference to pain in patients' SDMs that further reveal affective dysregulation in FM. In clinical practice, remediating the way in which pain is integrated into SDMs in FM may help to mitigate its negative impact on everyday life.
