The value of poetry therapy for people in palliative and end of life care

The Lawlessness of Loss: Poetry and Autoethnographic Writing as Therapy in Grief and Loss

This study seeks to locate and evaluate 'poetry therapy' as a form of therapeutic method for use by practitioners of humanistic psychotherapy especially when used in responding to the traumas associated with grief and loss. Following an initial survey of the literature, the study will explore some examples of the use of poetry therapy for grief, with an especial qualitative focus upon the insights to be gained from first-hand autoethnographic accounts. The study undertakes a literature review which also includes some consideration of peer-reviewed autoethnographic explorations authored by theorists and practitioners of psychotherapy in order to identify what additional insights, if any, may be gained from accessing these personal accounts of process. In particular, the humanist perspective upon grief should be tempered with pragmatism so as to avoid regarding poetry as a reductive sentimentalising of trauma: encountering loss may be seen as experiencing subjection to a 'lawless' world. The study confirms the use of poetry therapy and autoethnographic writing has significant utility and potential, whilst recognising the challenges for empirical confirmation, the need for practitioners to be sensitive to the nuances of the source materials and the subtlety of appropriate application for different client perspectives and groups.

A rapid umbrella review of the literature surrounding the provision of patient-centred end-of-life care

BACKGROUND

Patients have reported a broad range of unmet needs in their receipt of clinical care at the end of life. Therefore, enhancing the quality of end-of-life care through patient-centred healthcare interactions is warranted.

AIM

The aim of this rapid umbrella review was to synthesise previous literature reviews that have examined: (1) patient preferences for patient-centred end-of-life care; (2) barriers and enablers to patient-centred end-of-life care; (3) interventions designed to enhance patient-centred end-of-life care; and (4) patient-centred models of end-of-life care.

DESIGN

A rapid umbrella review was conducted and informed by the Joanna Briggs Institute's methodological guidance for conducting umbrella reviews.

DATA SOURCES

Three academic databases were searched for relevant literature in May 2022: MEDLINE, PsycINFO and CINAHL Plus. Inclusion criteria encompassed literature reviews that examined the topic of patient-centred care for any adult patients in end-of-life care.

RESULTS

A total of 92 literature reviews were identified. Findings suggest that there is often a discrepancy between patient preferences and the provision of care. These discrepancies have been associated with a range of barriers at the patient, staff and system levels. Common interventions included education and training for staff which were often met with improved patient outcomes. Patient-centred models of care were underrepresented across the literature.

CONCLUSIONS

This review highlighted a need for healthcare systems to support staff in providing a patient-centred end of life experience through the development of a co-designed patient-centred model of care, supplemented by professional development and a systematic approach to identifying and documenting patient preferences.

A Look Back and a Path Forward: Poetry's Healing Power during the Pandemic

This discussion seeks to highlight the ability of poetry to combat loneliness, a growing public health problem with significant negative health outcomes that potentially impact millions of Americans. We argue that poetry can play a very relevant role and have an impact in medicine. Through a brief literature review of previous studies on poetry in medicine, we demonstrate that poetry can not only combat loneliness but can also play important roles in helping patients, physicians, and other healthcare professionals/providers. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we believe now is the perfect opportunity to utilize poetry because the benefits can be experienced even in solitude, which is why this is such a timely and pertinent issue today.

The effect of poetry reading on self-concept of primary adolescents

Objectives this study, regarding the importance and significance of self-concept in children's psychological health and considering the strong role of art in meeting psychological needs, aimed at investigating the effect of poetry reading on the self-concept of Adolescents. Methods This study was a classic experimental design of pre-test and posttest with two groups of intervention and control in the academic year 2016-2017. The research population included Adolescents who were studying in the city of Aq Qaladar in the province of Golestan, Iran. Sixty students. Data collecting tools included two questionnaires and "Piers-Harris Children's Self-Concept" scale. The experimental groups were provided with poetry reading in eight group sessions of 60 min for 4 weeks. The poems were approved by 10 teachers with 10 years of experience, and the supervisor. Finally, paired t-test and independent t-test were used to analyze data using SPSS 16 (SPSS Statistics is a software package used for interactive, or batched, statistical analysis). Results Adolescents self-concept in the control group was 57.9(4.33) and in the experimental group 62.4(4.28) out of 80 questionnaires which showed a significant difference between the two groups (p < 0.001). Which demonstrated the effectiveness of poetry reading on Adolescents self-concept. Conclusions Considering the positive impact of poetry reading on adolescent self-esteem, this intervention is recommended to improve adolescent self-esteem.
