Abstract
Background Reduced arterial compliance is associated with an increased rate of morbidity and mortality in cardiovascular disease. Exercise is beneficial for compromised arterial compliance. However, the beneficial effects of exercise are lost with exhaustion. Lycium barbarum L. has been used in China for centuries to maintain good health. In this regard, the primary purpose of this study was to characterize the effects of the polysaccharides from Lycium barbarum (LBPs) on arterial compliance during exhaustive exercise. Methods A four-week swimming exercise program was designed for rats, and the blood levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), super oxide dismutase (SOD), nitric oxide(NO) and heat shock protein 70(HSP70) were detected. The tension of aorta rings was measured to evaluate the response of rats on noradrenaline (NA)-induced contractions. Results The rats administered LBPs showed longer swimming time until exhaustion than the control group of rats. Exercise-induced MDA elevation was repressed by LBPs supplementation. The LBPs-supplemented rats displayed a significant increase of SOD, NO, HSP70 than the non-supplemented rats. Additionally, LBPs significantly up-regulated the expression of eNOS and improved the endothelium-dependent vasodilatation of the aorta ring. Conclusion Our study proved that LBPs administration significantly inhibited the oxidative stress, and improved the arterial compliance.

Abstract
The present study tested the hypothesis that long-term repeated exposure to stressors results in irreversible changes in carbohydrate metabolism. Groups of adult male rats (five per group) were restrained for 1 h and 4 h later were forced to swim for 15 min everyday for 2, 4, or 24 weeks; five rats were autopsied after each interval. Groups of five rats exposed to stress for 2 or 4 weeks were maintained without further treatment (recovery groups) for up to 24 weeks. The fasting blood glucose concentration, measured at weekly intervals, was significantly higher in the stressed rats than in controls throughout the experiment, except in the 24th week, whereas that of the recovery groups was significantly higher than controls only up to the 8th week after the end of stress exposure and then reached normalcy. The blood concentrations of glucose, lactate, and pyruvate were significantly higher in the 2 and 4 weeks stress groups than in controls, whereas, except for lactate, in rats stressed for 24 weeks these values did not significantly differ from those in controls. These changes were accompanied by increased gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis as shown by alterations in activities of hepatic carbohydrate metabolizing enzymes and unaltered blood insulin concentrations in rats stressed for 2, 4, and 24 weeks. Furthermore, the blood insulin levels did not significantly vary among controls and the 2, 4, and 24 weeks stress groups. The results reveal that though hyperglycemia induced by long-term stress exposure is reversible, it persists for a prolonged period, even after the termination of stress exposure, before reaching normalcy. Prevalence of hyperglycemia for a prolonged period through increased activities of hepatic enzymes in stressed rats exemplifies allostasis.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of oat bran supplementation on time to exhaustion, glycogen stores and cytokines in rats submitted to training. The animals were divided into 3 groups: sedentary control group (C), an exercise group that received a control chow (EX) and an exercise group that received a chow supplemented with oat bran (EX-O). Exercised groups were submitted to an eight weeks swimming training protocol. In the last training session, the animals performed exercise to exhaustion, (e.g. incapable to continue the exercise). After the euthanasia of the animals, blood, muscle and hepatic tissue were collected. Plasma cytokines and corticosterone were evaluated. Glycogen concentrations was measured in the soleus and gastrocnemius muscles, and liver. Glycogen synthetase-α gene expression was evaluated in the soleus muscle. Statistical analysis was performed using a factorial ANOVA. Time to exhaustion of the EX-O group was 20% higher (515 ± 3 minutes) when compared with EX group (425 ± 3 minutes) (p = 0.034). For hepatic glycogen, the EX-O group had a 67% higher concentrations when compared with EX (p = 0.022). In the soleus muscle, EX-O group presented a 59.4% higher glycogen concentrations when compared with EX group (p = 0.021). TNF-α was decreased, IL-6, IL-10 and corticosterone increased after exercise, and EX-O presented lower levels of IL-6, IL-10 and corticosterone levels in comparison with EX group. It was concluded that the chow rich in oat bran increase muscle and hepatic glycogen concentrations. The higher glycogen storage may improve endurance performance during training and competitions, and a lower post-exercise inflammatory response can accelerate recovery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To analyze the effects of exhausting long-duration physical exercise (swimming) sessions of different durations and intensities on the number and phagocytic capacity of macrophages and neutrophils in sedentary rats. INTRODUCTION Exercise intensity, duration and frequency are important factors in determining immune response to physical effort. Thus, the effects of exhausting long-duration exercise are unclear. METHODS Wistar rats were divided into two groups: an untreated group (macrophage study) and oyster glycogen-treated rats (neutrophil study). In each group, the animals were subdivided into five groups (10 rats per group): unexercised controls, an unadapted low-intensity exercise group, an unadapted moderate-intensity exercise group, a preadapted low-intensity exercise group and a preadapted moderate-intensity exercise group. All exercises were performed to exhaustion, and preadaptation consisted of 5, 15, 30 and 45 min sessions. RESULTS Macrophage study: the number of peritoneal macrophages significantly decreased (9.22 ± 1.78 x 10(6)) after unadapted exercise but increased (21.50 ± 0.63 x 10(6)) after preadapted low-intensity exercise, with no changes in the moderate-intensity exercise group. Phagocytic capacity, however, increased by more than 80% in all exercise groups (low/moderate, unadapted/preadapted). Neutrophil study: the number of peritoneal neutrophils significantly decreased after unadapted (29.20 ± 3.34 x 10(6)) and preadapted (50.00 ± 3.53 x 10(6)) low-intensity exercise but increased after unadapted (127.60 ± 5.14 x 10(6)) and preadapted (221.80 ± 14.85 x 10(6)) moderate exercise. Neutrophil phagocytic capacity decreased by 63% after unadapted moderate exercise but increased by 90% after corresponding preadapted sessions, with no changes in the low-intensity exercise groups. CONCLUSION Neutrophils and macrophages of sedentary rats respond differently to exercise-induced stress. Adaptation sessions reduce exercise-induced stress on the immune system.

Abstract
Laboratory rats are commonly fed ad libitum (AL). Moderate dietary restriction (DR) decreases mortality and morbidity when compared with AL feeding, but there are several obstacles to the implementation of DR. Traditional methods of restricted feeding disrupt normal diurnal eating rhythms and are not compatible with group housing. We have designed a novel method, the diet board, to restrict the feeding of group-housed rats. Animals fed from the diet board had 15% lower body weight than the AL-fed animals at the age of 17 weeks. The welfare effects of diet board feeding were assessed by comparing the stress physiology of diet board fed animals with that of AL-fed animals. Diet board feeding was associated with higher serum corticosterone levels and lower faecal secretion of IgA, suggesting the diet board causes a stress reaction. However, the AL-fed group had larger adrenal glands with higher adrenaline and noradrenaline content than the diet board animals. No gastric ulcers were found in any of the animals at necropsy. The diet board thus appears to cause a stress reaction when compared with AL-fed rats, but no apparent pathology was associated with this reaction. The diet board could help to solve the health problems associated with AL feeding, while allowing the rats to be group-housed and to maintain their normal diurnal eating rhythms. The diet board can also be seen as a functional cage furniture item, dividing the cage into compartments and thus increasing the structural complexity of the environment. In conclusion, the diet board appears to possess refinement potential compared with traditional methods of DR.

Abstract
A intensidade, volume, modalidade de exercício, assim como o nível de aptidão e fatores nutricionais podem alterar a reposta imunológica. O objetivo deste estudo foi avaliar o efeito da suplementação crônica de farelo de aveia (fonte de fibras solúveis) sobre as células do sistema imunológico em ratos treinados, frente a um teste de exaustão. Foram utilizados ratos Wistar, ± dois meses, peso ± 200g, divididos em três grupos (n = 9, cada um): 1) controle sedentário (C); 2) treinado oito semanas submetido ao teste de exaustão (EX); e 3) treinado oito semanas submetido ao teste de exaustão com suplementação de 30% de farelo de aveia (EXA). O treinamento consistiu de 60 minutos de natação diários, cinco dias por semana durante oito semanas. As análises realizadas foram: contagem total de leucócitos, linfócitos dos linfonodos mesentéricos, macrófagos peritoneais e capacidade fagocitária de macrófagos peritoneais. Aplicou-se o teste estatístico ANOVA two way, seguido do post hoc de Tukey com p < 0,05. O grupo EX apresentou leucocitose quando comparado com o controle, o que não ocorreu no grupo EXA, porém, na comparação entre os grupos exercitados EXA, mostrou menor leucocitose em relação a EX. Não houve alteração significativa nos linfócitos teciduais em nenhum dos grupos exercitados. Tanto o número de macrófagos peritoneais como a capacidade fagocitária desta célula foram maiores nos grupos exercitados. Porém, no grupo suplementado a capacidade fagocitária foi maior em relação ao grupo exaustão sem farelo de aveia. A suplementação de fibras solúveis demonstrou resultados benéficos com relação às alterações imunológicas induzidas pelo exercício extenuante, além de aumentar a capacidade fagocitária de macrófagos peritoniais em ratos treinados durante oito semanas submetidos ao teste de exaustão.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of ultrasound treatment of experimental bone fractures and the effects of physical exercise on the speed of bone consolidation. Osteotomy was performed on the upper third of the right tibia of rats. Physical training consisted of swimming 1 h per d with a load of 5% body weight and therapy with medium-intensity ultrasound was applied for 5 min daily. Young adult male Wistar rats were divided into four groups: (1) osteotomized sedentary animals with no ultrasound treatment (OSnUS); (2) trained with no ultrasound treatment (OTnUS); (3) sedentary with ultrasound treatment (OSwUS); and (4) trained with ultrasound treatment (OTwUS). The animals were sacrificed for the following analyses: muscle glycogen and serum alkaline phosphatase on the 5th, 10th, 20th and 30th days and histological slices of the bone on the 5th and 20th days. The results show that ultrasound is better in the initial phases of the process of bone tissue repair and physical exercise at the end of bone consolidation. These facts suggest that the treatments herein used prove favorable to the bone regenerative process, as the overall ossification process has been accelerated.

Abstract
Estudos recentes sugerem que a suplementação de creatina pode interferir com a captação de glicose e a produção de lactato durante a atividade física. O objetivo deste estudo foi investigar os efeitos da suplementação aguda (5g.kg¹ durante uma semana) e crônica (1g.kg¹ durante oito semanas) de creatina sobre as concentrações sanguíneas de glicose e lactato de ratos sedentários e exercitados (natação a 80% da carga máxima tolerada). Setenta e dois ratos Wistar machos (240 ± 10g) foram utilizados e divididos igualmente em quatro grupos experimentais (n = 18): CON - ratos sedentários não suplementados; NAT - ratos exercitados não suplementados; CRE - ratos sedentários e suplementados; CRE + NAT - ratos exercitados e suplementados. As amostras sanguíneas foram obtidas antes e após o teste de determinação da carga máxima realizado semanalmente durante todo o experimento. Antes do teste de carga máxima, com exceção do grupo CRE-NAT (3-5 semanas), que apresentou concentrações plasmáticas de glicose inferiores em relação os demais grupos, todos os outros resultados foram semelhantes entre os grupos experimentais. Após o teste de carga máxima todos os grupos experimentais apresentaram redução das concentrações plasmáticas de glicose e aumento das concentrações plasmáticas de lactato. Contudo, em relação à glicose, esta redução foi significativamente (p < 0,05) pronunciada nos grupos CRE (1-4 semanas) e CRE + NAT (1-8 semanas) e, em relação ao lactato, o aumento foi significativamente (p < 0,05) menor nos grupos CRE (1-2 semanas) e CRE + NAT (1-8 semanas). Os achados deste estudo sugerem que o regime adotado de suplementação influenciou o perfil metabólico glicêmico, minimizou o acúmulo de lactato e potencializou a máxima carga suportada nos animais suplementados.

Abstract
Circadian rhythm may induce alterations of the pharmacokinetic properties of several drugs in clinical use. The aim of the study was to investigate whether lighting conditions alter the quinolone (pefloxacin) levels in serum and tissues and to determine any accumulation of the drug in the skin. Thirty male Wistar rats were divided into groups A, B, C, (n=10). The animals of group A were housed under 12h light/12h dark conditions, group B under 24h UV and group C was kept in complete darkness. All animals received 5 doses of 11mg/Kg pefloxacin every 8h for 48h.Pefloxacin levels were determined in serum, skin and femur by the inhibition zone in E.coli. in vitro. Pefloxacin concentrations in serum were increased in 24h darkness living status and decreased in 24h UV conditions as compared to group A animals. Additionally, both skin and femur pefloxacin levels were decreased under dark and UV conditions. In conclusion total light as well as total dark exposure may lead to pefloxacin pharmacokinetic changes which may have implications in the effectiveness of the drug in tissues.
