Abstract
OBJECTIVE Socioeconomic status (SES) has been previously associated with children's early development, health, and nutrition; however, evidence about the potential role of caregiver-child interaction in such associations was limited. This study aimed to explore the effect of caregiver-child interaction on the associations of SES with child developmental outcomes, including early neurodevelopment and social-emotional behavior. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 2078 children aged 0-6 in a rural county that just lifted out of poverty in 2020 in Central China. The Ages & Stages Questionnaires-Chinese version (ASQ-C) and the Social-Emotional (ASQ: SE) questionnaire were used to assess children's early neurodevelopment and social-emotional behavior, respectively. Caregiver-child interaction was evaluated with the Brigance Parent-Child Interactions Scale. Regression-based statistical mediation and moderation effect were conducted with the PROCESS macro of SPSS. RESULTS Children with low SES had an increased risk of suspected neurodevelopmental delay [OR = 1.92, 95% CI: 1.50, 2.44] and social-emotional developmental delay [OR = 1.31, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.66]. The caregiver-child interaction partially mediated the associations of SES with child developmental outcomes; the proportion of the indirect effect was 14.9% for ASQ-C total score and 32.1% for ASQ: SE score. Moreover, the caregiver-child interaction had a significant moderation effect on the association of SES with ASQ-C total score (P < 0.05). A weaker association was observed in children with high-level caregiver-child interaction than in medium and low ones. Similar moderating effects were found among boys but not girls. CONCLUSION Caregiver-child interaction plays a vital role in the relationship between SES and child development. Children with low SES households will benefit more in terms of their early development from intervention programs strengthening caregiver-child interaction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed to understand the early development and nurturing care environment of children aged 0-6 years in rural China and to evaluate the sex- and age-specific associations of nurturing care environment with child developmental outcomes. METHODS A cross-sectional survey involving 2078 children aged 0-6 years was conducted using a stratified cluster sampling strategy. We used face-to-face interviews to collect information on child, family and nurturing care. The Ages & Stages Questionnaires-Chinese version and ASQ: Social-Emotional were applied to assess children's neuro- and social-emotional development, respectively. Lower neurodevelopmental scores indicate an increased risk for neurodevelopmental delay, and higher social-emotional scores are indicative to a risk of social-emotional problems. The multiple linear regression model examined the associations of nurturing care environments with childhood development. RESULTS Among the investigated children, the average age was (42.9 ± 19.8) months and 55.8% were boys; 67.9% of the children had absent fathers because of labour migration and 54.0% had limited access to books and toys. Overall, boys had a lower total neurodevelopmental score than girls; similar gender patterns were also found in the domains of communication, fine motor, problem-solving and person-social. Concurrent absent fathers and limited access to books and toys were significantly associated with reduced neurodevelopmental scores [β - 11.44, 95% CI (-18.20, -4.68)] and increased social-emotional developmental scores [β 5.88, 95%CI (1.35, 10.41)] after controlling for confounding factors. Sex-specific analysis only echoed the results in boys. Additionally, having an absent father and limited access to books and toys was associated with lower neurodevelopmental scores [β - 14.58, 95%CI (-25.41, -3.75)] in children under 3 years of age and higher social-emotional developmental scores among children aged 3-6 years [β 10.66, 95%CI (5.09, 16.24)]. CONCLUSIONS Children, especially boys, with absent fathers due to labour migration have poorer neuro- and social-emotional development. Limited access to books and toys and father absence are linked to the children's developmental delay, especially for those under 3 years of age. Our findings suggest that intervention programs in resource-constrained rural areas are desirable; more importantly, such programs should begin before 3 years of age to achieve a benefit-cost outcome.

Abstract
CONTEXT Very preterm birth (<32 weeks) is associated with increased risk of developmental disorders. Emerging evidence suggests children born 32 to 38 weeks might also be at risk. OBJECTIVES To determine the relative risk and prevalence of being diagnosed with, or screening positive for, developmental disorders in children born moderately preterm, late preterm, and early term compared with term (≥37 weeks) or full term (39-40/41 weeks). DATA SOURCES Medline, Embase, Psychinfo, Cumulative Index of Nursing, and Allied Health Literature. STUDY SELECTION Reported ≥1 developmental disorder, provided estimates for children born 32 to 38 weeks. DATA EXTRACTION A single reviewer extracted data; a 20% sample was second checked. Data were pooled using random-effects meta-analyses. RESULTS Seventy six studies were included. Compared with term born children, there was increased risk of most developmental disorders, particularly in the moderately preterm group, but also in late preterm and early term groups: the relative risk of cerebral palsy was, for 32 to 33 weeks: 14.1 (95% confidence intervals [CI]: 12.3-16.0), 34 to 36 weeks: 3.52 (95% CI: 3.16-3.92) and 37 to 38 weeks: 1.44 (95% CI: 1.32-1.58). LIMITATIONS Studies assessed children at different ages using varied criteria. The majority were from economically developed countries. All were published in English. Data were variably sparse; subgroup comparisons were sometimes based on single studies. CONCLUSIONS Children born moderately preterm are at increased risk of being diagnosed with or screening positive for developmental disorders compared with term born children. This association is also demonstrated in late preterm and early term groups but effect sizes are smaller.

Abstract
This study investigated the relationship between moderate-to-late preterm (MLPT) birth and the risk of neurodevelopmental impairments (NIs) in young children compared with the risks associated with very preterm (VPT) and full-term (FT) birth based on nationally representative large-scale population data. Retrospective follow-up was conducted over 71 months for 738,733 children who were born and participated in the Korean National Health Screening Program for Infants and Children (NHSPIC) between 2011 and 2013. Using a data linkage between the NHSPIC and Korean healthcare claim information, data on birth year, sex, delivery type, birth weight, growth abnormality, gestational age, breastfeeding history, maternal age, NIs, multiple gestation, preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes (PROM), gestational diabetes, gestational hypertension, smoking during pregnancy, and socioeconomic status were collected and included in the final analysis. Cox proportional hazards models were applied to identify the impact of gestational age on NI risk, with all variables adjusted as appropriate. Overall, 0.9% and 3.8% rates of VPT and MLPT births were identified, respectively. NI incidence was highest among VPT children (34.7%), followed by MLPT (23.9%) and FT (18.2%) children. Both VPT (hazard ratio [HR], 1.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.03 to 2.05) and MLPT (HR, 1.21; 95% CI, 1.04 to 1.41) births were associated with increased NI risk. Low birth weight, PROM, and smoking during pregnancy were also associated with increased NI risk, while longer breastfeeding and higher socioeconomic status were associated with decreased risk. Special attention must be given to NIs for both VPT and MLPT children.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Moderate and late preterm (MLPT) birth accounts for the vast majority of preterm births, which is a global public health problem. The association between MLPT and neurobehavioral developmental delays in children and the underlying biological mechanisms need to be further revealed. The "placenta-brain axis" (PBA) provides a new perspective for gene regulation and risk prediction of neurodevelopmental delays in MLPT children. METHODS The authors performed multivariate logistic regression models between MLPT and children's neurodevelopmental outcomes, using data from 129 MLPT infants and 3136 full-term controls from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC). Furthermore, the authors identified the abnormally regulated PBA-related genes in MLPT placenta by bioinformatics analysis of RNA-seq data and RT-qPCR verification on independent samples. Finally, the authors established the prediction model of neurodevelopmental delay in children with MLPT using multiple machine learning models. RESULTS The authors found an increased risk of neurodevelopmental delay in children with MLPT at 6 months, 18 months, and 48 months, especially in boys. Further verification showed that APOE and CST3 genes were significantly correlated with the developmental levels of gross-motor domain, fine-motor domain, and personal social domain in 6-month-old male MLPT children. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggested that there was a sex-specific association between MLPT and neurodevelopmental delays. Moreover, APOE and CST3 were identified as placental biomarkers. The results provided guidance for the etiology investigation, risk prediction, and early intervention of neurodevelopmental delays in children with MLPT.

Abstract
Poor child feeding and childhood malnutrition are major public health problems in rural central and western China, with little evidence about their environmental determinants. This study aimed to investigate whether household water access is associated with dietary diversity and nutritional outcomes. We analyzed the cross-sectional data of 3727 children aged 6 to 59 months in rural central and western China, applying multivariate linear and logistic models to estimate the effect of water access on children’s anthropometric indices, hemoglobin, and dietary diversity. We found that unimproved water access was linked to a lower likelihood of achieving dietary diversity (OR = 0.65, 95% CI 0.44 to 0.98, p = 0.039); lower height-for-age z-score (β = −0.34, 95% CI −0.49 to −0.19, p < 0.001) and hemoglobin concentration (β = −2.78, 95% CI −5.16 to −0.41, p = 0.022); higher odds of stunting (OR = 1.50, 95% CI 1.01 to 2.25, p = 0.047) and anemia (OR = 1.34, 95% CI 1.02 to 1.77, p = 0.037). The associations between water access and nutritional outcomes were not explained by dietary diversity and were stronger in children who did not receive iron supplementation. These findings provide evidence for designing water-based nutritional interventions in China.

Abstract
Feeding problems are biopsychosocial in nature and have a great influence on children's growth. The aim of this study was to profile the status and possible influencing factors of feeding difficulty among normal Chinese toddlers, and to investigate its association with health and development. This study is a part of the Young Investigation (YI study) conducted in 10 cities in China. Data from 924 children aged 1-3 years were analyzed. Data on socio-demographic factors, feeding behaviors, self-reported diseases, and anthropometry parameters were collected. Blood samples were drawn to determine hemoglobin levels. Feeding difficulty was evaluated by the Montreal Children's Hospital Feeding Scale (MCH-FS). Ages and Stages Questionnaires, Third Edition (ASQ-3) were used to assess developmental progress. Multivariable analyses were performed to explore the potential associations. The mean total score of the MCH-FS was 35.21 ± 12.90 and the highest scored item was "acting up/making a big fuss during mealtimes." Feeding difficulty occurred more often among children with picky eating behavior or whose caregivers once used the strategy of pre-mastication. Children with feeding difficulty had lower intakes of cereals, vegetables, and fruits, and were more likely to suffer from diarrhea (OR, 2.04; 95%CI: 1.32, 3.11) or constipation (OR, 2.04; 95%CI: 1.27, 3.24), but not anemia. Feeding difficulty was also negatively associated with weight, height, head circumference and mid-upper-arm circumference-related Z-scores (P all < 0.05). In addition, it was related to poorer fine motor skills, personal and social skills, and total scores of ASQ-3 (β, -9.00; 95%CI: -15.11, -2.89). Feeding difficulty assessed by MCH-FS showed a negative association with children's health and development, supporting the need for early identification.
