Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Heavy Metals, and Genotoxicity of the Suburban Soils from Guangzhou, China

Interaction of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil-crop systems: The effects and mechanisms

In natural environments, the removal and degradation of two major pollutants, heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), are explored through targeted experimental investigations. However, these endeavors reveal that outcomes in situ may significantly diverge from the idealized effects observed in laboratory settings due to the complex interaction between HMs and PAHs, underscoring a pressing need for thorough research into their mutual impacts. This review examines the origins and migratory pathways of compound pollution stemming from HMs and PAHs. Concurrently, it provides an overview of the farmland ecosystem's response to combined HMs-PAHs pollution. This encompassed the assessments of changes in the soil's physical and chemical properties, the intricacies of the migration and transformation processes of the combined pollution within plants, and the consequential impact on the physiological functions of soil microorganisms. The varying concentration ratios of HMs and PAHs can modulate the permeability of plant root cell membranes, thereby influencing the translocation of these substances within the plant via symplastic and apoplastic pathways. Recent research has uncovered the mechanisms underlying cation-π interactions between HMs and PAHs. This review aims to offer a comprehensive overview of the current state of HMs-PAHs co-pollution, offering both qualitative and quantitative insights into their interaction patterns within the farmland ecosystem. The ultimate goal is to establish a robust theoretical foundation to support the in-situ remediation of these pollutants in agricultural practices and to provide a theoretical basis for soil health management in agricultural production.

Distribution and transfer rules of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in soil-wheat ecosystems in China

The translocation and accumulation patterns of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soil-crop system have important implications for the fate of PAHs and human health. This study summarized the concentrations of 16 priority PAHs in the soils and various parts of mature winter wheat in China, sourced from a screening of previous literature in English and Chinese databases. The study analyzes the distribution characteristics, transfer patterns, and human health risks of PAHs in sites studied in Shaanxi, Henan, and Shandong provinces. The results showed that the concentrations of Σ16 PAHs in the rhizosphere soil of wheat ranged from 10.30 to 893.68 ng/g, in descending order of Shaanxi > Henan > average > Shandong. In sites with mild to moderate contamination (200 < Σ16 PAHs < 600 ng/g; i.e., Henan and Shaanxi), the concentration of Σ16 PAHs in the roots was higher than that in the stems or the grains, while in contamination-free sites (Σ16 PAHs < 200 ng/g; i.e., Shandong), the highest concentration of Σ16 PAHs was found in the stems. Generally, the concentrations of PAHs increased in the order of roots-stems-grains. The predominant PAHs in each part of wheat were 2- or 3-ring compounds, with five- or six-ring PAHs being more prevalent in wheat from Shanghe, Shandong. The bioaccumulation factors of different wheat parts from Shaanxi and Henan were consistently smaller than 1, and low- and medium-ring (2-4 rings) PAHs had bigger bioconcentration factors than high-ring (5-6 rings) PAHs. However, the accumulation of PAHs in the aboveground parts of wheat was larger than that in the underground parts of the Shandong sites. The linear regression relationship between the octanol-water partition coefficient and root concentration factor (RCF) of PAHs reflected that low and medium-ring PAHs were more easily absorbed by wheat roots than high-ring PAHs in Shaanxi and Henan. Our assessment of the health risks of oral wheat intake in adults and children by the incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model found a potential carcinogenic risk for both age groups in each province, with higher risks in adults than in children.

Desert Vegetation Forty Years after an Oil Spill

Deserts are the most frequent locations of terrestrial crude oil contaminations. Nevertheless, the long-term effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on desert ecosystems are still unknown, which makes risk assessment and decision making concerning remediation difficult. This study examined the long-term effects of petroleum hydrocarbons on perennial desert vegetation. The study site was a hyper-arid area in the south of Israel, which was contaminated by a crude oil spill in 1975. The contaminated area was compared to uncontaminated reference areas. The composition of perennial plants 40 yr after the oil spill was not significantly affected by the contamination. However, the size distribution of the two most dominant shrub species, Baker and (Moq.) Iljin., and the only tree species, Savi and (Forssk.) Hayne, were different from the reference. These differences can be explained by decreased recruitment. The estimated recruitment of in the last 40 yr post oil spill was 74% less than recruitment in the reference area. Low recruitment of may in the future lead to the loss of tree cover, which would change the entire ecosystem, as are keystone species on which a number of microorganisms, plants, and animals rely. Remediation of oil spills and preventative measures are recommended.

Distribution and risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in suburban and rural soils of Beijing with various land uses

We investigated the sources, distribution, and health risks of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in soils of peri-urban Beijing. The mean concentrations of total 16 PAHs in suburban and rural soils of Beijing were 321.8 ± 408.2 and 219.2 ± 233.5 ng/g, respectively. The PAH concentrations decreased along the urban-suburban-rural gradient and varied with land use categories. The industrial areas had the highest soil PAH concentrations followed by the living areas, roadsides, green areas, and agricultural areas. The major sources of PAHs in these soils were coal and biomass combustion. Traffic emission was not the dominant source of PAHs in peri-urban Beijing. At a few sites, high soil PAH contents were caused by point sources such as iron and steel plants and a wood preservative factory. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of adults and children exposed to PAHs in the soils were acceptable. However, cautions should be paid to the abandoned industrial sites, which might be converted to residential area during the urbanization process.
