Abstract
Cyanobacteria are photosynthetic prokaryotes that inhabit extreme environments by modifying their photosensitive chemoreceptors called cyanobacteriochromes (CBCRs) which are linear tetrapyrrole-linked phycobilin molecules. These light-sensitive phycobilin from Spirulina platensis is recognized as a potential photoreceptor tool in optogenetics for monitoring cellular morphogenesis. We prepared and extracted highly fluorescent cyanobacterial phycocyanin (C-PC) by irradiating the culture with ambient red light. The crude phycocyanin was subjected to ion exchange chromatography, and its purity was monitored using UV-visible, fluorescence, and FT-IR spectroscopy methods. In the conventional method, red light-induced C-PC exhibited strong antioxidant activity against H2O2, with 88.7% in vitro scavenging activity without requiring any other preservatives. Interestingly, this red light-acclimated phycocyanin was applied as a biosensing material for the detection of the free radical hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) using the enzyme horseradish peroxidase (HRP) as a mediator. The modified C-PC-HRP glassy carbon electrode (GCE) can detect H2O2 from 0.1 to 1600 µM. The lowest possible detection limit of the electrode for H2O2 was 19 nM. This electrode was used to detect free radical H2O2 in blood serum samples. The microstructure of the lyophilized PC under SEM showed a flat crystal pattern, which enabled the immobilization of HRP on the electrode surface and electron transfer.

Abstract
Development of rapid colorimetric methods based on novel optical-active metal nanomaterials has provided methods for the detection of ions, biomarkers, cancers, etc. Fluorescent metal nanoclusters (FMNCs) have gained a lot of attention due to their unique physical, chemical, and optical properties providing numerous applications from rapid and sensitive detection to cellular imaging. However, because of very small color changes, their colorimetric applications for developing rapid tests based on the naked eye or simple UV-vis absorption spectrophotometry are still limited. FMNCs with peroxidase-like activity have significant potential in a wide variety of applications, especially for point-of-care diagnostics. In this review, the effect of using various capping agents and metals for the preparation of nanoclusters in their colorimetric sensing properties is explored, and the synthesis and detection mechanisms and the recent advances in their application for ultrasensitive chemical and biological analysis regarding human health are highlighted. Finally, the challenges that remain as well as the future perspectives are briefly discussed. Overcoming these limitations will allow us to expand the nanocluster's application for colorimetric diagnostic purposes in medical practice.

Abstract
Analysis of drugs clinically and their identification in biological samples are of utmost importance in the process of therapeutic drug monitoring, also in pharmacokinetic investigations and tracking of illicit medications. These investigations are carried out using a variety of analytical methods, including potentiometric electrodes. Potentiometric electrodes are a wonderful solution for researchers because they outperform other methods in terms of sustainability, greenness, and cost effectiveness. In the current study, ion-selective potentiometric sensors were assembled for the aim of quantification of the anticancer drug Letrozole (LTZ). The first step was fabrication of a conventional sensor based on the formation of stable host-guest inclusion complex between the cationic drug and 4-tert-butylcalix-8-arene (TBCAX-8). Two additional sensors were prepared through membrane modification with graphene nanocomposite (GNC) and polyaniline (PANI) nanoparticles. Linear responses of 1.00 × 10-5-1.00 × 10-2, 1.00 × 10-6-1.00 × 10-2 and 1.00 × 10-8-1.00 × 10-3 with sub-Nernstian slopes of 19.90, 20.10 and 20.30 mV/decade were obtained for TBCAX-8, GNC, and PANI sensors; respectively. The developed sensors were successful in determining the drug LTZ in bulk powder and dosage form. PANI modified sensor was used to determine LTZ in human plasma with recoveries ranging from 88.00 to 96.30%. IUPAC recommendations were followed during the evaluation of the electrical performance of the developed sensors. Experimental conditions as temperature and pH were studied and optimized. Analytical Eco-scale and Analytical GREEness metric were adopted as the method greenness assessment tools.

Abstract
Fluorescent chemosensor, 3-(Anthracen-2-yliminomethyl)-benzene-1,2-diol (ANB) has been synthesized by one-step condensation of 2-aminoanthracene and 2,3-dihydroxybenzaldehyde and characterized using 1H-NMR, FT-IR and Mass spectroscopic techniques. The probe ANB was found to be an efficient 'turn-on' fluorescence chemosensor for the selective detection of Al3+ ion over other metal ions in an aqueous solution. The chemosensor exhibits ~ 27-fold enhancement of emission intensity in presence of Al3+ ion. Fluorescence quantum values for ANB and (Al3+-ANB)-complex are 0.004 and 0.097, respectively. In addition, the binding constant and the limit of detection were found to be 1.22 × 104 M-1 and 0.391 µM, respectively. The chemosensor ANB binds to Al3+ ions in 2:1 stoichiometric ratio which was supported by Job's plot, 1H-NMR titration and florescence titration. Fluorescence reversibility of the sensor complex was well established by adding EDTA in the same condition and a molecular INHIBIT logic gate was fabricated using this reversible nature of the sensor complex. Additionally, the chemosensor ANB shows a novel aggregation-induced enhanced emission phenomenon, where the aggregate hydrosol of ANB shows enhance emission intensity.

Abstract
In this study, nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NS-CDs) were investigated for the detection of heavy metals in water through absorption-based colorimetric response. NS-CDs were synthesized by a simple one-pot hydrothermal method and characterized by TEM, STEM-coupled with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, NMR, and IR spectroscopy. Addition of Cu(II) ions to NS-CD aqueous solutions gave origin to a distinct absorption band at 660 nm which was attributed to the formation of cuprammonium complexes through coordination with amino functional groups of NS-CDs. Absorbance increased linearly with Cu(II) concentration in the range 1–100 µM and enabled a limit of detection of 200 nM. No response was observed with the other tested metals, including Fe(III) which, however, appreciably decreased sensitivity to copper. Increase of pH of the NS-CD solution up to 9.5 greatly reduced this interference effect and enhanced the response to Cu(II), thus confirming the different nature of the two interactions. In addition, a concurrent response to Co(II) appeared in a different spectral region, thus suggesting the possibility of dual-species multiple sensitivity. The present method neither requires any other reagents nor any previous assay treatment and thus can be a promising candidate for low-cost monitoring of copper onsite and by unskilled personnel.

Abstract
The present paper provides a description of the design, characterization, and use of a Hg2+ selective electrode (Hg2+-SE) for the determination of Hg2+ at ultra-traces levels in a variety of real samples. The ionophore in the proposed electrode is a new Schiff base, namely 4-bromo-2-[(4-methoxyphenylimino)methyl]phenol (BMPMP). All factors affecting electrode response including polymeric membrane composition, concentration of internal solution, pH sample solution, and response time were optimized. The optimum response of our electrode was obtained with the following polymeric membrane composition (% w/w): PVC, 32; o-NPOE, 64.5; BMPMP, 2 and NaTPB, 1.5. The potentiometric response of Hg2+-SE towards Hg2+ ion was linear in the wide range of concentrations (9.33 × 10-8-3.98 × 10-3 molL-1), while, the limit of detection of the proposed electrode was 3.98 × 10-8 molL-1 (8.00 μg L-1). The Hg2+-SE responds quickly to Hg2+ ions as the response time of less than 10 s. On the other hand, the slope value obtained for the developed electrode was 29.74 ± 0.1 mV/decade in the pH range of 2.0-9.0 in good agreement with the Nernstian response (29.50 mV/decade). The Hg2+-SE has relatively less interference with other metal ions. The Hg2+-SE was used as an indicator electrode in potentiometric titrations to estimate Hg2+ ions in waters, compact fluorescent lamp, and dental amalgam alloy and the accuracy of the developed electrode was compared with ICP-OES measurement values. Moreover, the new Schiff base (BMPMP) was synthesized and characterized using ATR-FTIR, elemental analysis, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR. The PVC membranes containing BMPMP as an ionophore unloaded and loaded with Hg(II) are reported by scanning electron microscope images (SEM) along with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) spectra.

Abstract
Here, we report ion-selective nanospheres with readout in the near-infrared (NIR) region in both fluorescence and absorbance modes. The nanospheres rely on an ionophore-mediated monomer-dimer conversion of an NIR transducer, DTTC. The DTTC monomer in the nanospheres emits fluorescence around 820 nm, while the dimer in the aqueous environment generates strong blue-shifted emission around 660 nm. With a lead ionophore, an unprecedented lower detection limit of 3 pM for Pb2+ was achieved, allowing us to determine Pb2+ levels in river water without diluting the sample. Also, the Cu2+-selective nanospheres showed a detection limit of 5 nM. Taking advantage of the biologically desired NIR window, blood potassium concentrations were also determined without a complicated sample pretreatment. The sensing process was explained with a theoretical model. The detection range was found finely adjustable by the amount of nanospheres used. Therefore, the nanospheres formed a highly selective, sensitive, versatile, and rapid analytical platform for metal-ion sensing.

Abstract
Electrochemical aptamer-based (E-AB) sensors offer a powerful and general means for analyte detection in complex samples for various applications. Paper-based E-AB sensors could enable portable, low-cost, and rapid detection of a broad range of targets, but it has proven challenging to fabricate suitable three-electrode systems on paper. Here, we demonstrate a simple, economic, and environmentally friendly strategy for fabricating aptamer-modified paper electrochemical devices (PEDs) via ambient vacuum filtration. The material, shape, size, and thickness of the three-electrode PED system can be fully customized. We developed aptamer-modified PEDs that enable sensitive and specific detection of small molecules in minimally processed biosamples. The sensitivity and stability of the PEDs are comparable to E-AB sensors based on commercial gold electrodes. We believe our strategy can lead to the development of high performance PEDs for the on-site detection of a variety of analytes.

Abstract
In the present study, a new class of hierarchical silica based imprinted mesoporous polymers was fabricated by ion imprinting technology and it was applied to simultaneous selective extraction of cadmium and lead ions by micro solid phase extraction (μ-SPE). The biological nanocrystalline cellulose (BNCC) was prepared via acid catalyzed hydrolysis of cotton wool. The hierarchical silica (HS), as a substrate material, was synthesized via dual-template method, using BNCC and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) as hard and soft templates respectively. The structure and functional groups was characterized by Fourier infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and nitrogen adsorption-desorption. The results indicate that the as-prepared material has a hierarchical mesoporous structure with high specific surface area and high adsorption capacity for Cd(II) and Pb(II). The optimum experimental conditions in the proposed procedure were determined by response surface methodology (RSM) based on Box Behnken Design (BBD) and then it was successfully applied to determine Cd(II) and Pb(II) ions in the river water and fish samples.

Abstract
As a colorimetric and fluorescent turn-on sensor to Al3+, N'-(2-hydroxybenzylidene)isoquinoline-3-carbohydrazide (HL) has been easily synthesized. The fluorescence intensity increases by 273 times in the presence of Al3+ at 458 nm. Meanwhile, the experiment data indicate that the limit of detection for Al3+ is 1.11 × 10-9 M. Remarkably, the blue fluorescence signal of HL-Al3+ could be specially observed by the naked eye under UV light and is significantly different from those of other metal ions. Fluorescence switch based on the control of Al3+ and EDTA proved HL could act as a reversible chemosensor. According to ESI-MS result and the Job's plots, the 2:1 coordination complex formed by HL and Al3+ could be produced. Density functional theory calculations were performed to illustrate the structures of HL and complex. The cell imaging experiment indicates that HL can be applied for monitoring intracellular Al3+ levels in cells.

Abstract
A novel isatin derivative (1) is UV-Visible active and displays about 90 nm bathochromic shift upon interaction with only Hg2+ and Cu2+, but not with other common metal ions. Also, the colorless probe 1 turns to brick-red and yellow in the presence of Hg2+ and Cu2+, respectively. Addition of increasing amounts of Hg2+ or Cu2+ to 1 leads to the emergence of a new absorption at ~470 nm (due to LMCT), with a concomitant decrease in the intensity of absorption of 1 at ~380 nm, and thereby provides a ratiometric response. Common metal ions and anions do not interfere with the interactions of 1 with Hg2+or Cu2+ ions. Probe 1 shows very high sensitivity and selectivity towards Hg2+ and Cu2+ as revealed by their very low detection limits 0.95 × 10-9 M and 1.5 × 10-9 M, respectively. Formation of 1:1 complex with Hg2+ and 2:1 complex with Cu2+ is confirmed using NMR, ESI-MS and FT-IR techniques, Job plot and DFT calculations. Selective detection of Hg2+ from Cu2+ is established from the ratiometric response caused by β-mercaptoethanol. Advantages of the probe 1 in terms of high sensitivity, stability in the physiological pH and suitability for dual detection are presented. Probe impregnated silica plates for onsite detection of Hg2+ and Cu2+ present in environmental samples is also demonstrated.

Abstract
The present work describes the first synthesis of novel asymmetric zinc (II) phthalocyanine (ZnPc) including three boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) and one ethyloxy azido moieties. Moreover, single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) surface was functionalized by this ZnPc containing BODIPY; using the azide-alkyne Huisgen cycloaddition (Click) reaction to obtain SWCNT-ZnPc hybrid material. Structural, thermal and morphological characterizations of both ZnPc and SWCNT-ZnPc hybrid were carried out in-depth by spectroscopic, thermal and microscopic techniques. In this study, the synthesized SWCNT-ZnPc material was decorated on composite glassy carbon electrode (GCE) by means of an easy and a practical drop cast method. The modified electrode was tested as a non-enzymatic electrochemical sensor in various common pesticides such as methyl parathion, deltamethrin, chlorpyrifos and spinosad. Electrochemical behavior of non-enzymatic electrode (GCE/SWCNT-ZnPc) was determined via cyclic voltammetry and differential pulse voltammetry. The non-enzymatic sensor demonstrated high selectivity for methyl parathion in a wide linear range (2.45 nM-4.0 × 10-8 M), low limit of detection value (1.49 nM) and high sensitivity (0.1847 μA nM-1). Also, the developing non-enzymatic sensor exhibited good repeatability (RSD = 2.3% for 10 electrodes) and stability (85.30% for 30 days). Validation guidelines by HPLC and statistical analysis showed that the proposed voltammetric method were precise, accurate, sensitive, and can be used for the routine quality control of methyl parathion determination in juice samples.

Abstract
Viability and metabolic assays are commonly used as proxies to assess the overall metabolism of microorganisms. The variety of these assays combined with little information provided by some assay kits or online protocols often leads to mistakes or poor interpretation of the results. In addition, the use of some of these assays is restricted to simple systems (mostly pure cultures), and care must be taken in their application to environmental samples. In this review, the necessary data are compiled to understand the reactions or measurements performed in many of the assays commonly used in various aspects of microbiology. Also, their relationships to each other, as metabolism links many of these assays, resulting in correlations between measured values and parameters, are discussed. Finally, the limitations of these assays are discussed.

Abstract
Heavy metals pollution is one of the key problems of environment protection. Electrochemical methods, particularly anodic stripping voltammetry, have been proven a powerful tool for rapid detection of heavy metal ions. In the present work, a bismuth modified porous graphene (Bi@PG) electrode as an electrochemical sensor was adopted for the detection of heavy metal Cd2+ in an aqueous solution. Combining excellent electronic properties in sensitivity, peak resolution, and high hydrogen over-potential of bi-continuous porous Bi with the large surface-area and high conductivity on PG, the Bi@PG electrode exhibited excellent sensing ability. The square wave anodic stripping voltammetry response showed a perfect liner range of 10-9-10-8 M with a correlation coefficient of 0.9969. The limit of detection (LOD) and the limit of quantitation (LOQ) are calculated to be 0.1 and 0.34 nM with a sensitivity of 19.05 μA·nM-1, which is relatively excellent compared to other carbon-based electrodes. Meanwhile, the Bi@PG electrode showed tremendous potential in composite detection of multifold heavy metals (such as Pb2+ and Cd2+) and wider linear range.

Abstract
Potassium ions (K+) present in wastewater has caused severe interference for NH4+ monitoring, over-estimation of NH4+ concentration and ultimately leads to extra energy consumption. Past effort for enhancing the selectivity of NH4+ over K+ were oftentimes complex, costly, or compromised the selectivity and accuracy of the NH4+ ion selective membrane (ISM) sensors. This study targeted this imminent challenge by developing an integrated NH4+/K+ auto-correction solid-state ISM (S-ISM) sensor assembly combined with a data-driven model to monitor [NH4+] under different [NH4+] and [K+] concentrations. The results showed that the interference of K+ was substantially alleviated for NH4+ measurement. The accuracy was enhanced by over 70% when examined using real wastewater and energy consumption was expected to reduce by 26% for a wastewater treatment plant, especially for wastewater with high [K+]. Furthermore, the uniquely structured S-ISMs were made by embedding the ionophores in a robust polyvinyl chloride (PVC) matrix containing plasticizers and a layer of carbon nanotubes (CNT) as ion-to-electron transducer, which maintained the selectivity and accuracy of the S-ISM sensor for 4 weeks in wastewater. NH4+/K+ sensor assembly integrated with data-driven correction models poses great potential in high-efficiency and energy-saving wastewater treatment and water reuse processes.

Abstract
Rapid, on-site detection of emerging pollutants is critical for monitoring health threats and the environment, especially if performed through autonomous systems. In this paper, we report on a new design of a complete electrochemical system whose working (WE), auxiliary (AE) and reference (RE) electrodes were obtained on a pen (PEN Sensor) made with graphite:polyurethane (GPUE). Working electrodes were decorated with spherical, ca. 200 nm silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) reduced on graphite using the polyol method. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) was used to detect bisphenol-A (BPA) in a linear range from 2.5 to 15 μmol L-1 with detection limit of 0.24 μmol L-1. The PEN Sensor could also detect bisphenol-A in tap and river water samples, with satisfactory reproducibility and repeatability, while common interferents did not affect electrooxidation of bisphenol-A. The high sensitivity and rapid detection are suitable for real-time analysis and in loco monitoring of emerging pollutants. With their robustness and versatility, PEN Sensors such as those fabricated here may be integrated into futuristic smart robotic systems.

Abstract
A single-use optical sensor was designed for Zn(II) determination based on the immobilisation of the colorimetric reagent 2-acetylpyridine benzoylhydrazone (2-APBH) in a polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) adhered on the surface of an inert rectangular strip of polyester (Mylar). Different components for the membrane preparation were tested and those resulting in membrane with good appearance, proper physical and optical properties and ease of preparation were selected. Factorial design 23 with three replicates of the central point was applied for the optimisation of the membrane composition. The optimal composition consisted of 2.5 g of poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC), 4 mL of tributyl phosphate (TBP) and 0.04 g of 2-APBH. The optode showed a linear dynamic range from 0.03 (detection limit) to 1 mg L-1 of Zn(II) ions with a response time of 30 min in aqueous solution at pH 6 and a relative standard deviation of 3.90% for 0.4 mg L-1 of Zn(II). The sensor exhibited good selectivity to Zn(II) over other commonly ions. It was successfully applied to the determination of Zn(II) in a water certified reference material, spiked tap water, vitamin-mineral drink, food supplement and foot health care products, as contribution to the concern about this heavy metal due to its significant role in many biological and physiological processes although toxicant at high doses.

Abstract
The present study is a first report about magnetic, optical and electrical as well as drug sensing properties of DyMnO3-ZnO green-nanocomposites that are synthesized by Pechini modified method. Three natural compounds containing Vitis vinifera, Hibiscus sabdariffa and rhus juices are used as green and eco-friendly reagents for synthesis of the nanostructures. The nanostructures are characterized by various techniques containing Fourier transform infrared spectra (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X-ray (EDX), field emission scanning electron microscopes (FESEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HR-TEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS). The calcination temperature, type of chelating agent and pH are optimized to achieve the best structural and smallest crystallite sizes of the systems via an eco-friendly approach. The studies show that the Vitis vinifera juice creates the best homogeneous sphere-like nanostructures. Therefore, the samples that are synthesized by Vitis vinifera juice are used for fabrication of a carbon paste electrode modified with DyMnO3-ZnO nanocomposites (DMZN/CPE). The nanostructured modified electrode exhibits an excellent electrocatalytic effect for determination of atenolol (ATN) using voltammetry techniques. The results reveal that the DyMnO3-ZnO green-nanocomposites have potential applications as a sensitive material in the drug analysis in biological samples.
