Hybrid Microgels for Catalytic and Photocatalytic Removal of Nitroarenes and Organic Dyes From Aqueous Medium: A Review

NiII-containing l-glutamic acid cross-linked chitosan anchored on Fe3O4/f-MWCNT: a sustainable catalyst for the green reduction and one-pot two-step reductive Schotten-Baumann-type acetylation of nitroarenes

In this research, new and eye-catching catalytic applications of the nickelII (NiII) nanoparticles (NPs)-containing l-glutamic acid cross-linked chitosan anchored on magnetic carboxylic acid-functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotube (Fe3O4/f-MWCNT-CS-Glu/NiII) system, which was characterized by Fourier transform infrared (FT-IR), powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), SEM-based energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) and elemental mapping, inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and vibrating sample magnetometry (VSM), have been introduced for the environmentally benign and efficient reduction and one-pot two-step reductive Schotten-Baumann-type acetylation of nitroarenes in water at 60 °C under an air atmosphere. It is worth noting that the NiII-containing hybrid nanocatalyst, in the mentioned organic reactions, showed short reaction times, high yields of the desired products, acceptable turnover numbers (TONs) and turnover frequencies (TOFs), and also satisfactory magnetic recycling and reusability performance even after ten times of reuse. As another significant point, all the titled organic transformations have been carried out in water as an entirely favorable and green solvent for chemical reactions.

Nanogels with Metal-Organic Cages as Functional Crosslinks

A dinuclear metal-organic cage with four acrylate side chains was prepared by self-assembly. Precipitation polymerization of the cage with N-isopropylacrylamide yielded a thermoresponsive nanogel. The host properties of the cage were retained within the gel matrix, endowing the nanogel with the capability to serve as a sorbent for chloride ions in water. Moreover, a heteroleptic cage with the drug abiraterone as co-ligand was integrated into a nanogel. The addition of chloride ions induced a structural rearrangement of the metal-ligand assembly, resulting in the gradual release of abiraterone.

Silver nanoparticles loaded on lactose/alginate: in situ synthesis, catalytic degradation, and pH-dependent antibacterial activity

We present the in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) through ionotropic gelation utilizing the biodegradable saccharides lactose (Lac) and alginate (Alg). The lactose reduced silver ions to form AgNPs. The crystallite structure of the nanocomposite AgNPs@Lac/Alg, with a mean size of 4-6 nm, was confirmed by analytical techniques. The nanocomposite exhibited high catalytic performance in degrading the pollutants methyl orange and rhodamine B. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposite is pH-dependent, related to the alterations in surface properties of the nanocomposite at different pH values. At pH 6, the nanocomposite demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity. These findings suggest that this nanocomposite has the potential to be tailored for specific applications in environmental and medicinal treatments, making it a highly promising material.

Photocatalytic Degradation of Paracetamol under Simulated Sunlight by Four TiO2 Commercial Powders: An Insight into the Performance of Two Sub-Micrometric Anatase and Rutile Powders and a Nanometric Brookite Powder

The photocatalytic degradation of the emerging contaminant paracetamol in aqueous solution has been studied under 1 SUN (~1000 W m−2) in the presence of four commercial TiO2 powders, namely sub-micrometric anatase and rutile, and nanometric brookite and P25 (the popular anatase/rutile mixture used as a benchmark in most papers). The rutile powder showed low activity, whereas, interestingly, the anatase and the brookite powders outperformed P25 in terms of total paracetamol conversion to carboxylic acids, which, according to the literature, are the final products of its degradation. To explain such results, the physicochemical properties of the powders were studied by applying a multi-technique approach. Among the physicochemical properties usually affecting the photocatalytic performance of TiO2, the presence of some surface impurities likely deriving from K3PO4 (used as crystallization agent) was found to significantly affect the percentage of paracetamol degradation obtained with the sub-micrometric anatase powder. To confirm the role of phosphate, a sample of anatase, obtained by a lab synthesis procedure and having a “clean” surface, was used as a control, though characterized by nanometric particles and higher surface area. The sample was less active than the commercial anatase, but it was more active after impregnation with K3PO4. Conversely, the presence of Cl at the surface of the rutile did not sizably affect the (overall poor) photocatalytic activity of the powder. The remarkable photocatalytic activity of the brookite nanometric powder was ascribed to a combination of several physicochemical properties, including its band structure and nanoparticles size.

Influence of Stacking Sequence on Mechanical Properties of Basalt/Ramie Biodegradable Hybrid Polymer Composites

In this study, the mechanical properties of basalt/ramie/polyester hybrid composite laminates were investigated. A matrix of 45% polyester was used, as it has good bonding properties between fibers. The composite laminates were fabricated using a hand layup technique, with seven layers stacked in different sequences and impregnated in the polyester matrix to create a hybrid configuration. Tensile, flexural, impact, compression, and hardness tests were conducted according to ASTM standards for mechanical characterization. The results showed that the overall stacking sequence of sample number seven (BRBRBRB) had the highest tensile strength at 120 MPa, impact energy at 8 J, flexural strength at 115 MPa, compression strength at 70 MPa, and hardness of 77. Natural fiber-reinforced composites are being used in current automotive industry applications, such as in electric vehicles.

Catalytic degradation of azo dyes by bimetallic nanoparticles loaded in smart polymer microgels

The contamination of water by azo dyes is increasing rapidly due to their waste use in textile industries. These dyes are very toxic for living things. Therefore, it is very important to remove these dyes from water. Various materials are reported for this purpose. Here, the most effective system of bimetallic nanoparticles in smart polymer microgels was prepared. The microgel system of N-isopropylmethacrylamide (NMA) (monomer) and methacrylic acid (MAa) (comonomer) was synthesized by a free radical precipitation polymerization method and then bimetallic (Ag/Ni) nanoparticles were encapsulated into the P(NMA-MAa) microgels by in situ reduction of both silver and nickel salts by NaBH₄ (reductant) after insertion of both (Ag⁺/Ni²⁺) ions. The P(NMA-MAa) microgels and Ag/Ni-P(NMA-MAa) hybrid microgels were characterized with FTIR, UV-vis, TGA, XRD, DLS, EDX, and STEM. The pH and temperature responsive behavior of Ag/Ni-P(NMA-MAa) was also evaluated. The catalytic efficiency of Ag/Ni-P(NMA-MAa) was assessed for degradation of methyl orange (MOr), congo red (CRe), eriochrome black T (EBlT) and methyl red (MRe) dyes under various conditions in aqueous medium. The apparent rate constant (k ₀) value for MOr, CRe, EBlT and MRe was found to be 0.925 min^-1, 0.486 min^-1, 0.540 min^-1 and 0.525 min^-1 respectively. The Ag/Ni-P(NMA-MAa) was found to be an excellent recyclable catalyst.

Thermal, Mechanical and Dielectric Properties of Polyimide Composite Films by In-Situ Reduction of Fluorinated Graphene

Materials with outstanding mechanical properties and excellent dielectric properties are increasingly favored in the microelectronics industry. The application of polyimide (PI) in the field of microelectronics is limited because of the fact that PI with excellent mechanical properties does not have special features in the dielectric properties. In this work, PI composite films with high dielectric properties and excellent mechanical properties are fabricated by in-situ reduction of fluorinated graphene (FG) in polyamide acid (PAA) composites. The dielectric permittivity of pure PI is 3.47 and the maximum energy storage density is 0.664 J/cm³ at 100 Hz, while the dielectric permittivity of the PI composite films reaches 235.74 under the same conditions, a 68-times increase compared to the pure PI, and the maximum energy storage density is 5.651, a 9-times increase compared to the pure PI films. This method not only solves the problem of the aggregation of the filler particles in the PI matrix and maintains the intrinsic excellent mechanical properties of the PI, but also significantly improves the dielectric properties of the PI.

Construction and Adsorption Performance Study of GO-CNT/Activated Carbon Composites for High Efficient Adsorption of Pollutants in Wastewater

Based on the increasing application requirements for the efficient adsorption of wastewater pollutants, graphene oxide-carbon nanotube/activated carbon (GO-CNT/AC) composites are constructed from the optimal microstructure matching of GO, CNTs, and AC materials by solution impregnation and freeze-drying methods. Three-dimensional structures with nano-micro hierarchical pores are established, with GO and CNTs uniformly dispersed on the AC surface, effectively restrain the agglomeration. The added CNTs played a "spring" role, supporting the gap between the GO sheets and AC matrix. Meanwhile, stable links are formed between GO, CNTs, and AC, realizing the synergistic matching of the microstructure, which provides abundant active absorption sites beneficial for improving the adsorption performance. The influences of the CNT contents, adsorbent amounts, methylene blue (MB) concentrations, and pH values on the adsorption property of GO-CNT/AC composites are systematically investigated. The results show that when the pH value of the MB solution is 13, the CNT concentration is 3 mg/mL and the MB concentration is 200 mg/L, the adsorption property of the composite is the best, with an adsorption capacity of 190.8 mg/g and a removal percentage of 95.4%. Compared with the raw AC, the adsorption capacity and removal percentage of the composites are increased by 73.9% and 72.8%, respectively. The GO-CNT/AC composites exhibit excellent cyclic adsorption performance, with a cyclic stability of 91.8% after six rounds of adsorption-desorption cycles. The kinetic analysis shows that the adsorption process conforms to the PSO kinetic model. By fitting of the IPD model, the adsorption mechanisms of the GO-CNT/AC composites are divided into two adsorption stages and described respectively. This study provides a new way to achieve highly efficient adsorption of pollutants in wastewater.

Biomaterials for Helicobacter pylori therapy: therapeutic potential and future perspectives

Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) is the main cause of gastric adenocarcinoma. However, the traditional antibiotic treatment of H. pylori is limited due to increased antibiotic resistance and low efficacy; low drug delivery efficiency and difficulties in eradicating H. pylori that is present intracellularly or in biofilms cause further setbacks. Biomaterials that can protect drugs against stomach acid, target lesions, control drug release, destroy biofilms, and exhibit unique antibacterial mechanisms and excellent biocompatibility have emerged as attractive tools for H. pylori eradication, particularly for drug-resistant strains. Herein, we review the virulence mechanisms, current drug treatments, and antibiotic resistance of H. pylori strains. Furthermore, recent advances in the development of biomaterials, including nanoparticles (such as lipid-based nanoparticles, polymeric nanoparticles, and inorganic nanoparticles), microspheres, and hydrogels, for effective and precise therapy of H. pylori and different types of therapeutic mechanisms, as well as future perspectives, have also been summarized.

Methacrylic acid based microgels and hybrid microgels

Methacrylic acid based microgels have got much consideration in the last two decades because of their potential uses in different fields owing to their responsive behaviour towards external stimuli. Synthesis, properties and uses of methacrylic acid based microgels and their hybrids have been critically reviewed in this article. With minute change in external stimuli such as pH and ionic strength of medium, these microgels show quick swelling/deswelling reversibly. The methacrylic acid based microgels have been widely reported for applications in the area of nanotechnology, drug delivery, sensing and catalysis due to their responsive behaviour. A critical review of current research development in this field along with upcoming perception is presented here. This discussion is concluded with proposed probable future studies for additional growth in this field of research.

Microgels Formed by Spontaneous Click Chemistries Utilizing Microfluidic Flow Focusing for Cargo Release in Response to Endogenous or Exogenous Stimuli

Protein therapeutics have become increasingly popular for the treatment of a variety of diseases owing to their specificity to targets of interest. However, challenges associated with them have limited their use for a range of ailments, including the limited options available for local controlled delivery. To address this challenge, degradable hydrogel microparticles, or microgels, loaded with model biocargoes were created with tunable release profiles or triggered burst release using chemistries responsive to endogenous or exogeneous stimuli, respectively. Specifically, microfluidic flow-focusing was utilized to form homogenous microgels with different spontaneous click chemistries that afforded degradation either in response to redox environments for sustained cargo release or light for on-demand cargo release. The resulting microgels were an appropriate size to remain localized within tissues upon injection and were easily passed through a needle relevant for injection, providing means for localized delivery. Release of a model biopolymer was observed over the course of several weeks for redox-responsive formulations or triggered for immediate release from the light-responsive formulation. Overall, we demonstrate the ability of microgels to be formulated with different materials chemistries to achieve various therapeutic release modalities, providing new tools for creation of more complex protein release profiles to improve therapeutic regimens.

Catalytic behavior and antibacterial/antifungal activities of new MNPs/zeolite@alginate composite beads

In this paper, a new family of composite materials was prepared based on calcium alginate and metal nanoparticle-loaded zeolite omega. Different types of metal nanoparticles (MNPs), namely Cu, Co and Fe, were loaded onto zeolite omega to test the performance of the resulting metal/zeolite@alginate composites towards the catalytic reduction of methylene blue dye. To examine their application field as broadly as possible, these composite beads were also tested as antibacterial and antifungal agents against several types of bacteria. Several techniques such as XRD, XRF, FTIR, XPS, SEM and TGA were used to characterize the samples. The obtained results showed that all the composite bead samples were effective in the reduction of MB dye. The composite Co/Zeolite@ALG with relatively low Co nanoparticle (NP) content was selected as the best performing catalyst due to its reduction of MB dye being completely achieved in 3 min with a rate constant of 1.4 min-1, which was attributed to its highly porous structure. The reuse tests conducted on the best-performing catalyst showed good results which persisted through five successive cycles. For antibacterial and antifungal activities, the Cu/Zeolite@ALG and Fe/Zeolite@ALG composites showed good activity with significant inhibition zones.

Photocatalysis: an effective tool for photodegradation of dyes-a review

The disposal of dye-contaminated wastewater is a major concern around the world for which a variety of techniques are used for its treatment. The photocatalytic treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater is one of the treatment methods. Semiconductor-assisted photocatalytic treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater has gained pronounced attention recently. This review outlines the recent advancements in the photocatalytic treatment of dye-contaminated wastewater. The photocatalytic degradation of dyes follows three types of mechanisms: (1) dye sensitization through charge injection, (2) indirect dye degradation through oxidation/reduction, and (3) direct photolysis of dye. Several experimental parameters like initial concentration of dyes, pH, and catalyst dosage significantly affect the photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The photocatalytic materials can be categorized into three generations. The single-component (e.g., ZnO, TiO₂) and multiple component semiconductor metal oxides (e.g., ZnO-TiO₂, Bi₂O₃-ZnO) are categorized as first-generation and second-generation photocatalysts, respectively. The photocatalysts dispersed on an inert solid substrate (e.g., Ag-Al₂O₃, ZnO-C) are classified as third-generation photocatalysts. Finally, we reviewed the challenges that affect the photocatalytic degradation of dyes.

Phase Transition Behavior and Catalytic Activity of Poly(N-acryloylglycinamide-co-methacrylic acid) Microgels

Poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide) is a well-known thermoresponsive polymer possessing an upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in water. By copolymerizing N-acryloyl glycinamide (NAGA) with methacrylic acid (MAA) in the presence of a crosslinker, poly(N-acryloyl glycinamide-co-methacrylic acid) [P(NAGA-MAA)] copolymer microgels with an MAA molar fraction of 10-70 mol % were obtained. The polymerization kinetics suggests that the copolymer microgels have a random structure. The size of the microgels was between 60 and 120 nm in the non-aggregated swollen state in aqueous medium and depending on the solvent conditions, they show reversible swelling and shrinking upon temperature change. Their phase transition behavior was studied by a combination of methods to understand the process of the UCST-type behavior and interactions between NAGA and MAA. P(NAGA-MAA) microgels were loaded with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by the reduction of AgNO₃ under UV light. Compared with the chemical reduction of AgNO₃, the photoreduction results in smaller AgNPs and the amount and size of the AgNPs are dependent on the comonomer ratio. The catalytic activity of the AgNP-loaded microgels in 4-nitrophenol reduction was tested.

Physicochemical aspects of inorganic nanoparticles stabilized in N-vinyl caprolactam based microgels for various applications

The vinyl caprolactam (VCL) based microgel system has become the center of great attention due to its versatile properties. Copolymerization of VCL with an ionic monomer imparts pH responsive properties into the microgel system in addition to thermo-sensitivity. Stimuli responsive behavior of VCL-based microgels makes them prospective and appealing candidates for practical applications covering the fields of drug delivery, catalysis and optical devices. In the last few years, VCL-based microgels have been used as microreactors and stabilizers for the synthesis and stabilization of inorganic nanoparticles to obtain hybrid microgels. The present review article provides a summary of the present-day progress of fabrication, stabilization, categorization and analysis of VCL-based microgels and their hybrids with different morphologies. The stimuli responsive properties and applications of VCL-based hybrid microgels have been reviewed critically. The remaining problems which need to be addressed have been pointed out for further advancement in this field.
