Abstract
Previous studies have related single toxic metals (TMs) to hyperuricemia (HUA) among the general population, however, the association of the TM mixture with HUA, especially in older adults, remains poorly understood. We aimed to examine the relationships between individual TMs and their mixture and HUA in Chinese rural older adults. This study consisted of 2075 rural older adults aged 60 years or over. Blood concentrations of aluminum (Al), arsenic (As), barium (Ba), cadmium (Cd), cesium (Cs), gallium (Ga), mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), thallium (Tl), and uranium (U) were detected using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The associations of single TMs with HUA were assessed using logistic regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) models, and the association of TM mixture with HUA was explored using the elastic net with environmental risk score (ENET-ERS), quantile g-computation (QGC), and Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR) models, respectively. Adjusted logistic regression model showed that Cs (OR = 1.65, 95% CI 1.37-1.99) and Pb (OR = 1.46, 95% CI 1.28-1.67) were positively related to HUA, and RCS model exhibited a positive linear association of Cs and Pb with HUA. ENET-ERS and QGC models quantified a positive correlation between the TM mixture and the odds of HUA, with estimated ORs of 1.15 (95% CI 1.11-1.19) and 1.84 (95% CI 1.37-2.47), respectively, and Cs and Pb had the most weight. BKMR model demonstrated a significant linear association between the TM mixture and increased odds of HUA, with the posterior inclusion probabilities (PIPs) of both Cs and Pb being 1.00. Moreover, we observed a positive interaction between Cs and Pb on HUA. The TM mixture is associated with increased odds of HUA in rural older adults, which may mainly be driven by Cs and Pb. Subsequent studies are warranted to confirm these findings and clarify the mechanisms linking multiple TMs with HUA.

Abstract
Food derived bioactive peptides are prominent dietary supplements to protect against oxidative stress induced by lead (Pb) exposure. This study aimed to develop a new strategy for rapid preparation of highly active antioxidant soybean polypeptides (ASPs) against Pb toxicity. In silico enzymatic hydrolysis simulation and antioxidant activity prediction showed that pepsin, chymotrypsin and bromelain can produce peptides with the highest activity. The preparation process was then optimized, and the obtained ASP showed good antioxidant and metal-chelating activities in vitro. An in vivo study showed that ASP exerted prominent protective effects against Pb-induced cognitive impairment and tissue damage in mice by reducing Pb deposition and enhancing the antioxidant capacity in tissues and was superior to Vc, DMSA or their combination in some aspects. ASP composition analysis demonstrated that its prominent antioxidant activity might be attributed to the high proportion of amino acid residues E, L, P and V in the peptide sequence and L, V and A at the C- and N-termini. In conclusion, in silico prediction could facilitate the preparation of ASP. And the ASP prepared with the new strategy exerted prominent protective effects against Pb toxicity.

Abstract
In this article the content of toxic xenobiotics (heavy metals and pesticides) in cow milk collected from 5 districts of Eastern Kazakhstan was examined and their cumulative properties were determined. The content of organochlorine pesticides (HCCH, DDT) was not detected in the analyzed milk. The content of mercury and arsenic in milk samples does not exceed the maximum allowable concentration (0.005 and 0.05 mg/kg, respectively). The content of cadmium above the maximum allowable concentration (0.03 mg/kg) was found in milk sampled from Shemonaikha and Katon-Karagai districts. The content of lead and zinc above the maximum allowable concentration (0.1 and 5.0 mg/kg, respectively) was found in milk samples taken from all 5 studied districts. The content of copper above the maximum allowable concentration (1.0 mg/kg) was found in milk samples collected from 4 districts under study (Borodulikha, Beskaragai, Shemonaikha and Katon-Karagai). Based on the analysis of information data the need to develop an accelerated method of determining toxic xenobiotics in milk was substantiated. The basic directions of modernization of the biosensor for determination of cadmium and lead salts in milk and dairy products were selected. A new approach to the process of immobilization of the enzyme on the surface of a substrate for cadmium and lead salts determination in milk has been developed. The efficiency of using a polymeric plate with a graphite conducting layer as a basis for the enzyme biosensor was established.

Abstract
Spent tire rubber-derived chars and their corresponding H3PO4 and CO2-activated chars were used as adsorbents in the recovery of Pb(II) ion and (W(VI)) oxyanion from synthetic solutions. The developed chars (both raw and activated) were thoroughly characterized to have insight about their textural and surface chemistry properties. H3PO4-activated chars presented lower surface areas than the raw chars and an acidic surface chemistry which affected the performance of these samples as they showed the lowest removals of the metallic ions. On the other hand, CO2-activated chars presented increased surface areas and increased mineral content compared to the raw chars, having presented higher uptake capacities for both Pb(II) (103-116 mg/g) and W(VI) (27-31 mg/g) ions. Cation exchange with Ca, Mg and Zn ions was appointed as a mechanism for Pb removal, as well as surface precipitation in the form of hydrocerussite (Pb3(CO3)2(OH)2). W(VI) adsorption might have been ruled by strong electrostatic attractions between the negatively charged tungstate species and the highly positively charged carbons' surface.The results shown in this work allow concluding that the valorisation of spent tire rubber through pyrolysis and the subsequent activation of the obtained chars is an alternative and a feasible option to generate adsorbent materials with a high uptake capacity of critical metallic elements.

Abstract
The incidence of congenital heart diseases (CHDs) shows an increasing trend and results in large health burdens in China. However, there have been inconsistent results of the relationship between lead (Pb) level and risk of CHDs. We performed a pair-matched case-control study and included 97 cases and 194 controls to investigate the association between pregnancy Pb exposure and the risk of CHDs in a birth cohort study conducted in Lanzhou, China. The results showed that compared to the lowest Pb tertile, both highest tertile levels of maternal blood and umbilical cord blood Pb were associated with an increased risk of CHDs. The similar significant results were found in cases with isolated CHDs. Compared to both lowest tertiles of Pb level in maternal blood and umbilical cord blood, the highest tertile was associated with an increased risk of CHDs, especially for isolated CHDs. Overall, our study suggests a significant association between pregnancy Pb exposure and risk of CHDs, especially for isolated CHDs. Future studies are needed to elucidate the underlying mechanism.

Abstract
Heavy metal pollution in freshwater ecosystems is a serious threat to aquatic organisms. Species of Megaloptera are important predators of aquatic invertebrates and have been widely used as bioindicators in assessing the quality of freshwater ecosystems. In this study, we determined the differential gene expression profile of Protohermes costalis (Walker) (Megaloptera: Corydalidae) in response to cadmium (Cd) exposure by using transcriptome analysis. A total of 60,627 unigenes were obtained in the transcriptomes of 150 mg/liter (PL), 1,000 mg/liter (PH) CdCl2 treatment, and the no Cd control (PC). Differential expression gene (DEG) analysis by pairwise comparison identified 2,794 DEGs after filtering the noninsect genes and repetitive counts. 606 DEGs were shared in comparisons of PL versus PC and PH versus PC, with 165 DEGs consistently up-regulated and 441 down-regulated by both PL and PH. Six heat shock proteins (HSPs) in the HSP70 family were identified in P. costalis and PcosHSP68 was up-regulated by both PL and PH. Real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction (RT-qPCR) confirmed that the expression levels of PcosHSP68 in PL and PH were higher than that of PC by 31 and 197%, respectively. These results showed that exposure to Cd altered the gene expression profiles of P. costalis and the transcriptome data presented in this study provide insight into future studying on molecular mechanisms of Cd toxicity to these insects.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological evidence of the associations between metal exposure and gout-related outcomes (including serum uric acid [SUA], hyperuricemia and gout) is scarce. The aim of the study is to investigate the associations of metal exposure with SUA, hyperuricemia and gout in general adults. METHODS In this study, the exposure to five blood metals (mercury, manganese, lead, cadmium and selenium) of general adults was analyzed based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) from 2011 to 2018 (n = 14,871). Linear, logistic and weighted quantile sum (WQS) regression models were applied to examine the associations of blood metals with gout-related outcomes. Possible dose-response relationships were analyzed through restricted cubic spline regression. RESULTS Compared with the lowest quartile of blood metals, mercury (quartile 2 and 4), lead (quartile 2, 3, and 4) and selenium (quartile 2 and 4) were found to be positively correlated with SUA and hyperuricemia. Higher levels of mercury and lead were associated with gout, but only those in the fourth quartile had statistical significance (OR [95%CI]: 1.39 [1.10-1.75] and 1.905 [1.41-2.57]) respectively). The WQS index of the blood metals was independently correlated with SUA (β [95%CI]: 0.17 [0.13-0.20]), hyperuricemia (OR [95%CI]: 1.29 [1.16-1.42]) and gout (OR [95%CI]: 1.35 [1.15-1.58]). Among them, lead was the most heavily weighted component (weight = 0.589 for SUA, 0.482 for hyperuricemia, and 0.527 for gout). In addition, restricted cubic spline regression models showed a linear association of lead with the prevalence of hyperuricemia and gout. CONCLUSION Our results suggested that blood metal mixtures were positively associated with gout-related outcomes, with the greatest effect coming from lead.

Abstract
This research focuses on the health risks caused by heavy metal (HM) environmental pollution. Soil, water, corn, rice, and patients' hair samples from Daping Village, Yunnan Province, China, were analyzed for seven selected HMs. Geoaccumulation index (Igeo), pollution indexes (PI), and the Nemerow integrated pollution index (PN) were used to evaluate pollution levels. We employed principal component analysis (PCA), correlation analysis (CA), and spatial distribution to identify the source and distribution characteristics of HMs in soil. Health risks of HMs and exposure pathways were accessed by calculating the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI). The Igeo, PI, and PN results show that cadmium (Cd) and arsenic (As) pollution is severe in soil, while other pollution is relatively little. PCA, CA, and spatial distribution show that HMs may be derived from black shale weathering and enrichment. Residents' drinking water is relatively safe. Arsenic is the element most threatening to local residents (HI = 3.8). Soil (HI = 3.55) ingestion and plant (HI = 1.67) ingestion are the primary exposure pathways to HMs. This unusual disease may be caused by children's relatively low immunity and long-term exposure to As. We must enhance the protection of children and encourage avoiding soil contact as much as possible. Our results highlight the importance of investigating HM pollution from geological sources and blocking potential exposure pathways.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) is an important environmental pollutant. Oxidative stress and the inflammatory response have been postulated as mechanisms involved in lead-induced renal damage. Smilax glabra Roxb. has been used for treatment of heavy-metal poisoning in China for 500 years. We investigated S. glabra flavonoids extract (SGF) could attenuate lead acetate-induced nephrotoxicity in weaning rats and human embryonic kidney (HEK)-293 cells, and investigated the possible mechanisms. Compared with Pb exposed group of weaning rats, SGF could significantly promote lead excretion in the blood and kidney, and increase the content of the renal-function indicators blood urea nitrogen, serum uric acid, and serum creatinine. SGF could improve the glomerular filtration rate (GFR) and histologic changes in the kidneys of weaning rats exposed to Pb. SGF could also reduce lead-induced cytotoxicity, improve DNA damage-induced apoptosis and cleaved caspase-3-mediated apoptosis in HEK-293 cells stimulated with Pb. SGF significantly increased the activity of the antioxidant enzymes superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase, and decreased excessive release of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and malondialdehyde in the kidneys of the weaning rats and in HEK-293 cells. The antioxidant mechanism of SGF related to activation of the Kelch-like ECH-associated protein 1/nuclear-factor-E2-related factor 2/hemeoxygenase-1(Keap1/Nrf2/HO-1) pathway. SGF could inhibit secretion of interleukin (IL)-1β, IL-6 and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α induced by Pb in vivo and in vitro. The anti-inflammatory mechanism of SGF related to inhibition of ROS and pro-inflammatory cytokines triggered the nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) pathway through blockade of inhibitors of I-κB degradation, phosphorylation of NF-κB p65, and nuclear translocation of p65. Our findings indicate that SGF could be a natural antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent for treating lead-induced nephrotoxicity.
