Development of recoverable adsorbents for Cr(VI) ions by grafting of a dimethylamino group-containing monomer on polyethylene substrate and subsequent quaternization

A polymeric adsorbent for removal of hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)) ions was developed by the photografting of 2-(dimethylamino)ethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) to a polyethylene (PE) mesh and subsequent quaternization with iodoalkanes of different alkyl chain lengths. The grafting of DMAEMA and subsequent quaternization were verified by the FT-IR and XPS measurements. The Cr(VI) ion adsorption capacity of the DMAEMA-grafted PE meshes had the maximum value at the grafted amount of 2.6 mmol/g in a 0.20 mM K₂Cr₂O₇ solution at pH 3.0 and 30°C. The adsorption behaviour obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetic model and well expressed by Langmuir isotherm. These results suggest that the Cr(VI) ion adsorption occurs through the electrostatic interaction mainly between protonated dimethylamino groups and hydrochromate (HCrO₄^-) ions. The adsorption capacity of the quaternized PE-g-PDMAEMA meshes increased with an increase in the degree of quaternization and/or the alkyl chain length of the iodoalkanes used and the maximum adsorption ratio was obtained at the degree of quaternization of 54.2% for the iodoheptane-quaternized PE-g-PDMAEMA (PE-g-QC₇PDMAEMA) mesh. This value was about 1.86 times higher than that of the PE-g-PDAMEMA mesh. Cr(VI) ions were successfully desorbed from the PE-g-PDMAEMA and PE-g-QC₇PDMAEMA meshes in eluents such as NaOH, NaCl, and NH₄Cl. In 0.50 M NaCl, 0.10 M NH₄Cl, and 0.50 mM NaOH, the adsorption and desorption process was repeatedly performed without any considerable decrease and the desorption behaviour obeyed the pseudo-second order kinetic model. These results emphasise that the PE-g-PDMAEMA meshes and their quaternized products can be applied as an adsorbent for Cr(VI) ions.

"Why not stoichiometry" versus "Stoichiometry--why not?" Part II: GATES in context with redox systems

Redox equilibria and titration play an important role in chemical analysis, and the formulation of an accurate mathematical description is a challenge. This article is devoted to static and (mainly) dynamic redox systems; the dynamic systems are represented by redox titrations. An overview addresses earlier approaches to static redox systems (redox diagram plots, including Pourbaix diagrams) and to titration redox systems, thereby covering a gap in the literature. After this short review, the generalized approach to electrolytic systems (GATES) is introduced, with generalized electron balance (GEB) as its inherent part within GATES/GEB. Computer simulation, performed according to GATES/GEB, enables following the changes in potential and pH of the solution, together with chemical speciation at each step of a titration, thus providing better insight into this procedure. The undeniable advantages of GATES/GEB over earlier approaches are indicated. Formulation of GEB according to two approaches (I and II) is presented on the respective examples. A general criterion distinguishing between non-redox and redox systems is presented. It is indicated that the formulation of GEB according to Approach II does not need the knowledge of oxidation degrees of particular elements; knowledge of the composition, expressed by chemical formula of the species and its charge, is sufficient for this purpose. Approach I to GEB, known also as the "short" version of GEB, is applicable if oxidation degrees for all elements of the system are known beforehand. The roles of oxidants and reductants are not ascribed to particular components forming a system and to the species thus formed. This is the complete opposite of earlier approaches to redox titrations, based on the stoichiometric redox reaction, formulated for this purpose. GEB, perceived as a law of matter conservation, is fully compatible with other (charge and concentration) balances related to the system in question. The applicability of GATES/GEB in optimization a priori of chemical analyses made with use of redox titration is indicated. The article is illustrated with many examples of static and dynamic redox systems. The related plots are obtained from calculations made according to iterative computer programs. This way, GATES/GEB enables seeing details invisible in real experiments.

Pulse disturbances to the colonization of hard-substrates and in situ determination of copper using diffusive gradients in thin-films (DGT): quantifying dose and response in the field

Studies conducted in Port Philip Bay, Victoria, Australia are described that examined the effect of experimentally elevated copper concentrations on the recruitment of epifauna to settlement plates. Simultaneous measurement of the copper concentration using diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) allowed direct comparisons to be made between the labile copper concentration measured at the settlement surface, and the biological effects observed. Copper concentrations created by the field dosing technique were between 20-30 micrograms l-1 for the first 2 d, but then dropped considerably for the following 4 d (3 micrograms l-1), and were indistinguishable from background for the final 7 d. The first 2 d of a copper pulse reduced the recruitment of barnacles, ascidians, serpulid worms, an encrusting bryozoan, and didemnid ascidians. The impacts occurred despite the copper pulse being much less than published LC50 values for similar species. The impacts were no longer obvious by day 7 or 14, having been obscured by either high mortality of early settlers, or large settlement events that took place after day 2. Thus the greatest impact of the pollution event occurred during the period of highest toxicant concentration. The value of this study lies in the correlation of toxicity effects with bio-available metal concentrations under realistic (natural, in situ) conditions.
