Abstract
Skin photoaging is mostly caused by ultraviolet A (UVA), although active medications to effectively counteract UVA-induced photoaging have not yet been created. Resveratrol, a naturally occurring polyphenol found in the skin of grapes, has been shown to have various biological functions such as anti-inflammatory and antioxidant characteristics. However, the role of resveratrol in UVA-induced photoaging has not been clarified. We investigated the mechanism of action of resveratrol by UVA irradiation of human skin fibroblasts (HSF) and innovatively modified a mouse model of photoaging. The results demonstrated that resveratrol promoted AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) phosphorylation to activate autophagy, reduce reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, inhibit apoptosis, and restore normal cell cycle to alleviate UVA-induced photoaging. In addition, subcutaneous injection of resveratrol not only improved the symptoms of roughness, erythema, and increased wrinkles in the skin of UVA photodamaged mice, but also alleviated epidermal hyperkeratosis and hyperpigmentation, reduced inflammatory responses, and inhibited collagen fiber degradation. In conclusion, our studies proved that resveratrol can treat UVA-induced photoaging and elucidated the possible molecular mechanisms involved, providing a new therapeutic strategy for future anti-aging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Phytochemicals are natural compounds derived from plants, and are now at the forefront of anti-cancer research. Macrophage immunotherapy plays a crucial role in the treatment of colorectal cancer (CRC). In the context of colorectal cancer, which remains highly prevalent and difficult to treat, it is of research value to explore the potential mechanisms and efficacy of phytochemicals targeting macrophages for CRC treatment. PURPOSE The aim of this study was to gain insight into the role of phytochemical-macrophage interactions in regulating CRC and to provide a theoretical basis for the development of new therapeutic strategies in the future. STUDY DESIGN This review discusses the potential immune mechanisms of phytochemicals for the treatment of CRC by summarizing research of phytochemicals targeting macrophages. METHODS We reviewed the PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science and CNKI databases from their initial establishment to July 2023 to classify and summaries phytochemicals according to their mechanism of action in targeting macrophages. RESULTS The results of the literature review suggest that phytochemicals interfere with CRC development by affecting macrophages through four main mechanisms. Firstly, they modulate the production of cytotoxic substances, such as NO and ROS, by macrophages to exert anticancer effects. Secondly, phytochemicals polarize macrophages towards the M1 phenotype, inhibit M2 polarisation and enhance the anti-tumour immune responses. Thirdly, they enhance the secretion of macrophage-derived cytokines and alter the tumour microenvironment, thereby inhibiting tumor growth. Finally, they activate the immune response by targeting macrophages, triggering the recruitment of other immune cells, thereby enhancing the immune killing effect and exerting anti-tumor effects. These findings highlight phytochemicals as potential therapeutic strategies to intervene in colorectal cancer development by modulating macrophage activity, providing a strong theoretical basis for future clinical applications. CONCLUSION Phytochemicals exhibit potential anti-tumour effects by modulating macrophage activity and intervening in the colorectal cancer microenvironment by multiple mechanisms.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES) is a natural polyphenol with excellent biological activity. But the poor stability and bioavailability of RES severely limit its application. Thus, the resveratrol-loaded sulfated Hericium erinaceus β-glucan-chitosan nanoparticles (DS-CS-RES NPs) were prepared using electrostatic self-assembly to solve these problems in this study. The structure of DS-CS-RES NPs was spherical or sub spherical shape with small average particle size (191.07 nm), which was characterized by FT-IR, FS, XRD and TEM. DS-CS-RES NPs exhibited good stability and RES had a sustainable release from the nanoparticles in gastrointestinal digestion. Meanwhile, DS-CS-RES NPs could improve the inflammatory injury of LPS stimulated RAW264.7 macrophages by inhibiting the production of NO, IL-1β, IL-6 and TNF-α. Furthermore, DS-CS-RES NPs had strong anti-inflammatory activity by regulating protein levels of NF-κB p65, STAT1 and TLR4 through NF-κB and JAK-STAT1 signaling pathway in vitro, and sulfated H. erinaceus β-glucan-chitosan nanoparticle (DS-CS NPs) and RES had synergistic anti-inflammatory effect. Overall, DS-CS NPs can serve as a potential green and safe functional carrier for encapsulating resveratrol, which can improve its anti-inflammatory activity. This work may be conducive to the development of functional carrier for encapsulating RES and applications of hydrophobic active molecules in functional foods or medicines.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE Interstitial lung disease (ILD) represents a significant complication of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) that lacks effective treatment options. This study aimed to investigate the intrinsic mechanism by which resveratrol attenuates rheumatoid arthritis complicated with interstitial lung disease through the AKT/TMEM175 pathway. METHODS We established an arthritis model by combining chicken type II collagen and complete Freund's adjuvant. Resveratrol treatment was administered via tube feeding for 10 days. Pathological changes in both the joints and lungs were evaluated using HE and Masson staining techniques. Protein expression of TGF-β1, AKT, and TMEM175 was examined in lung tissue. MRC-5 cells were stimulated using IL-1β in combination with TGF-β1 as an in vitro model of RA-ILD, and agonists of AKT, metabolic inhibitors, and SiRNA of TMEM175 were used to explore the regulation and mechanism of action of resveratrol RA-ILD. RESULTS Resveratrol mitigates fibrosis in rheumatoid arthritis-associated interstitial lung disease and reduces oxidative stress and inflammation in RA-ILD. Furthermore, resveratrol restored cellular autophagy. When combined with the in vitro model, it was further demonstrated that resveratrol could suppress TGF-β1 expression, and reduce AKT metamorphic activation, consequently inhibiting the opening of AKT/MEM175 ion channels. This, in turn, lowers lysosomal pH and enhances the fusion of autophagosomes with lysosomes, ultimately ameliorating the progression of RA-ILD. CONCLUSION In this study, we demonstrated that resveratrol restores autophagic flux through the AKT/MEM175 pathway to attenuate inflammation as well as fibrosis in RA-ILD by combining in vivo and in vitro experiments. It further provides a theoretical basis for the selection of therapeutic targets for RA-ILD.

Abstract
Resveratrol and caffeic acid are some of the most consumed antioxidants during the day, so their importance as sources and their benefits need to be evaluated and updated. This survey aimed not only to analyze whether young Romanian consumers are informed about the benefits of antioxidants in general, and resveratrol and caffeic acid in particular, but also to observe the degree of nutritional education of these participants. Young consumers know the concept of antioxidants relatively well; they managed to give examples of antioxidants and indicate their effects. The majority of those chosen drink wine and coffee, but many are unaware of their health advantages and antioxidant properties. Students are less familiar with the antioxidant chemicals resveratrol and caffeic acid. It is advised to have a thorough understanding of these significant antioxidants and their nutritional content as they are present in our regular diets, and further studies on different kinds of antioxidants are required to increase the awareness of people concerning their importance in daily life.

Abstract
Resveratrol, a natural polyphenol in various plants, has gained significant attention for its potential health-promoting properties. It has been demonstrated, after reviewing various clinical and in vitro studies, that resveratrol possesses potent antioxidant potential. Resveratrol demonstrates cellular component protection by directly neutralizing free radicals (FRs) and enhancing the expression of natural antioxidant enzymes, thereby mitigating oxidative damage to proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids. Clinical trials have shown promising results, indicating that resveratrol supplementation can enhance antioxidant defenses and reduce oxidative damage markers in various populations. In addition to its antioxidant effects, resveratrol exhibits potent anti-inflammatory properties. It can modulate key inflammatory pathways, such as nuclear factor-kappa B (NF-κB) and mitogen-activated protein kinases (MAPKs), thereby suppressing the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and chemokines. Furthermore, resveratrol's multimodal effects extend beyond its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. It has been discovered to exert regulatory effects on various cellular processes, including apoptosis, cell cycle progression, angiogenesis, and immunological responses. The primary aim of this review paper is to provide a thorough overview of the current knowledge on resveratrol, including its chemical composition, bioaccessibility, clinical effectiveness, and utilization in nanotechnology to enhance its bioavailability. From future perspectives, revising the administration methods for certain contexts and understanding the underlying systems responsible for resveratrol's effects will require further inquiry. For the highest potential health results, advanced trial-based research is necessary for combinational nano-delivery of resveratrol.

Abstract
Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a persistent metabolic disorder marked by deficiencies in insulin secretion and/or function, affecting various tissues and organs and leading to numerous complications. Mitochondrial biogenesis, the process by which cells generate new mitochondria utilizing existing ones plays a crucial role in energy homeostasis, glucose metabolism, and lipid handling. Recent evidence suggests that promoting mitochondrial biogenesis can alleviate insulin resistance in the liver, adipose tissue, and skeletal muscle while improving pancreatic β-cell function. Moreover, enhanced mitochondrial biogenesis has been shown to ameliorate T2DM symptoms and may contribute to therapeutic effects for the treatment of diabetic nephropathy, cardiomyopathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy. This review summarizes the intricate connection between mitochondrial biogenesis and T2DM, highlighting the potential of novel therapeutic strategies targeting mitochondrial biogenesis for T2DM treatment and its associated complications. It also discusses several natural products that exhibit beneficial effects on T2DM by promoting mitochondrial biogenesis.

Abstract
Resveratrol, renowned as an antioxidant, also exhibits significant potential in combatting severe respiratory infections, particularly the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Nevertheless, the specific mechanism underlying its inhibition of RSV replication remains unexplored. Heparan sulfate proteoglycans (HSPGs) play a pivotal role as attachment factors for numerous viruses, offering a promising avenue for countering viral infections. Our research has unveiled that resveratrol effectively curbs RSV infection in a dose-dependent manner. Remarkably, resveratrol disrupts the early stages of RSV infection by engaging with HSPGs, rather than interacting with RSV surface proteins like fusion (F) protein and glycoprotein (G). Resveratrol's affinity appears to be predominantly directed towards the negatively charged sites on HSPGs, thus impeding the binding of viral receptors. In an in vivo study involving RSV-infected mice, resveratrol demonstrates its potential by ameliorating pulmonary pathology. This improvement is attributed to the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokine expression and a reduction in viral load within the lungs. Notably, resveratrol specifically alleviates inflammation characterized by an abundance of neutrophils in RSV-infected mice. In summation, our data first shows how resveratrol combats RSV infection through interactions with HSPGs, positioning it as a promising candidate for innovative drug development targeting RSV infections. Our study provides insight into the mechanism of resveratrol antiviral infection.

Abstract
Resveratrol, a non-flavonoid polyphenolic compound, possesses various beneficial properties such as anti-cancer, anti-aging, anti-bacterial, and antioxidant effects. It is naturally produced by many plants in response to stimulation. However, the content of resveratrol in natural plants can vary significantly, ranging from micrograms to milligrams per kilogram. As the demand for resveratrol increases, the development of methods for extracting and quantifying resveratrol in food has become a rapidly growing field in recent years. This review aims to comprehensively summarize the progress made in resveratrol analysis in food over the past decade (2012-2022), with a specific focus on the latest advancements in extraction and detection technologies. The objective is to offer a valuable reference for further research and utilization of resveratrol in various food applications.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS The interaction between diet, inflammation, and oxidative stress significantly influences aging, but the available evidence has been limited. We evaluated potential associations of dietary inflammatory index (DII), dietary oxidative balance score (DOBS), and measures of biological aging. METHODS This cross-sectional study was performed among 8839 individuals from NHANES 2003-2014. DII and DOBS were determined by aggregating data from 26 to 17 a priori selected dietary components. Biological aging metrics included homeostatic dysregulation (HD), Klemera-Doubal method (KDM), phenotypic age (PA), and allostatic load (AL). Binomial logistic regression models and multivariate linear regression models were conducted. RESULTS The associations of dietary inflammation and oxidative stress potential and biological aging metrics were significant among American adults nationwide. Consuming foods with higher DII was significantly associated with accelerated HD 1.26 (1.10, 1.44), KDM 1.24 (1.06, 1.45), and PA 1.54 (1.33, 1.78). Compared with the lowest DOBS, the hazard ratios of accelerated HD, KDM, PA, and AL were 0.74 (0.64, 0.86), 0.80 (0.70, 0.92), 0.61 (0.52, 0.72) and 0.78 (0.63, 0.97), respectively. The adverse effects of pro-inflammatory and pro-oxidative diets on accelerated HD, KDM, and PA were 1.39 (1.18, 1.62), 1.28 (1.08, 1.51), and 1.76 (1.47, 2.10). Serum AST/ALT ratio and globulin were implicated in and mediate the aging effects. CONCLUSIONS Higher DII and/or lower DOBS are associated with higher markers of biological aging. Our research elucidates that diets may mitigate biological aging resulting from inflammation and/or oxidative stress.

Abstract
Stilbenes are characterized by a vinyl group connecting two benzene rings to form the basic parent nucleus. Hydrogen atoms on different positions of the benzene rings can be substituted with hydroQxyl groups. These unique structural features confer anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antiviral, antioxidant, anticancer, cardiovascular protective, and neuroprotective pharmacological effects upon these compounds. Numerous small molecule compounds have demonstrated these pharmacological activities in recent years, including Resveratrol, and Pterostilbene, etc. Tamoxifen and Raloxifene are FDA-approved commonly prescribed synthetic stilbene derivatives. The emphasis is on the potential of these small molecules and their structural derivatives as epigenetic regulators in various diseases. Stilbenes have been shown to modulate epigenetic marks, such as DNA methylation and histone modification, which can alter gene expression patterns and contribute to disease development. This review will discuss the mechanisms by which stilbenes regulate epigenetic marks in various diseases, as well as clinical trials, with a focus on the potential of small molecule and their derivatives such as Resveratrol, Pterostilbene, and Tamoxifen.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury occurs in acute intestinal obstruction, intussusception, acute mesenteric artery embolism, and other diseases and can lead to local intestinal necrosis, distant organ involvement, or systemic reactions, with high morbidity and mortality. Ferroptosis plays a crucial role in intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury, and inhibition of ferroptosis may provide new approaches for treating the disease. SIRT3 protects cells from oxidative stress and may be involved in the process of ferroptosis. We hypothesized that resveratrol, an agonist of SIRT3, could ameliorate intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury by compensating the GSH/GPX4 pathway. METHODS Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) and Caco-2 hypoxia-reoxygenation models were established. Transmission electron microscopy was used to assess mitochondrial function; the Chiu's score was used to evaluate the degree of intestinal mucosal injury based on HE staining; and Western blot was used to detect the SIRT3/FoxO3a pathway, tight junction proteins and ferroptosis-related protein expression. Sirt3-/- C57, shSIRT3-Caco-2 cells and siFoxO3a-Caco-2 cells were established. C11-BODIPY was used to detect lipid peroxide in cells; FD4 and IFABP were used to detect intestinal permeability; MitoSOX was used to detect ROS levels; and MitoTracker and immunofluorescence colocalization were used to detect SIRT3 levels. RESULTS In the intestinal I/R model, I/R injury occurs mainly during the reperfusion period and leads to ferroptosis through the GSH/GPX4 pathway. Resveratrol could reduce ferroptosis and ameliorate I/R injury by activating SIRT3. In Sirt3-/- mice, more intestinal mucosal cells underwent ferroptosis, I/R injury was more severe, and resveratrol lost the ability to ameliorate I/R injury. In addition, hypoxia-reoxygenation increased RSL3-induced ferroptosis sensitivity in Caco-2 cells in vitro. In the presence of shSIRT3 or RSL3 alone, resveratrol could ameliorate Caco-2 ferroptosis, but not RSL3-induced shSIRT3-Caco-2 ferroptosis. Furthermore, resveratrol might activate the SIRT3/FoxO3a pathway, increase the expression of SOD2 and catalase, and inhibit ROS generation, thus reducing lipid peroxidation and ferroptosis. CONCLUSION To date, this is the first study to show that resveratrol ameliorates intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury by activating SIRT3 and reducing ferroptosis. Resveratrol can reduce intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury by activating the SIRT3/FoxO3a pathway, increasing the expression of SOD2 and catalase, reducing ROS and LPO production, compensating for the GSH/GPX4 pathway and inhibiting ferroptosis. Resveratrol increases the expression of SOD2 and catalase, reduces the production of ROS and LPO, compensates for the GSH/GPX4 pathway and inhibits ferroptosis by activating the SIRT3/FoxO3a pathway.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a type of metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia, which can lead to different degrees of cognitive decline. Therefore, it is crucial to explore the molecular biological mechanisms of neuronal injury. In this study, we investigated the effect of high glucose on eIF2α expression and the mechanism of neuronal injury, and on this basis, the protective mechanism of resveratrol is explored. Treatment with 50 mM high glucose in cortical neurons increased the levels of eIF2α phosphorylation; the expressions of ATF4 and CHOP increased. ISRIB alleviated high glucose-induced neuronal injury by reducing eIF2α phosphorylation when neurons were pretreated with ISRIB before high glucose treatment. Compared with the high glucose-treated group, resveratrol pretreatment reduced eIF2α phosphorylation, the levels of its downstream molecules ATF4 and CHOP, and LDH release. Resveratrol reduced the level of cortical eIF2α phosphorylation and the expression of its downstream molecules in DM mice and improved the ability of spatial memory and learning in DM mice without affecting anxiety and motor performance. Meanwhile, resveratrol modulated the expression of Bcl-2 protein and also effectively decreased the DM-induced up-regulation of Bax, caspase-3, p53, p21, and p16. Taken together, these results suggested that high glucose caused neuronal injury through the eIF2α/ATF4/CHOP pathway which was inhibited by ISRIB and resveratrol. The present study indicates that eIF2α is the new target for the treatment of high glucose-induced neuronal injury, and resveratrol is a potential new medicine to treat diabetes encephalopathy.

Abstract
Aged myocardium is more susceptible to ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. Autophagy and apoptosis play important roles in cardiac I/R injury. However, whether resveratrol can reduce the I/R vulnerability of aged myocardium by regulating apoptosis and autophagy remains unclear. The present study aimed to investigate the effect of resveratrol on the tolerance to I/R injury in aged male mice and to determine the contribution of apoptosis and autophagy. We used aged C57 mice as our research subjects. The hearts of mice were isolated after 6 weeks of intragastric administration with resveratrol and subsequently perfused with Krebs-Henseleit buffer to produce the I/R model. We found that resveratrol alleviated cardiac I/R injury in aged mice, but not in SIRT1+/- mice. Aged mice exhibited decreased LC3 and Beclin1 expressions, which were significantly rescued by resveratrol treatment. In addition, resveratrol decreased the expression of Bax and the activity of Caspase-3, while increasing the expression of Bcl-2 and the activity of SIRT1 in aged mouse hearts. Coimmunoprecipitation assays revealed that resveratrol facilitated the binding of Bax to Bcl-2 and the dissociation of Bcl-2 from Beclin1 in aged mouse myocardium. Conversely, SIRT1 knockout enhanced the formation of the Beclin1/Bcl-2 complex and disrupted the interaction between Bcl-2 and Bax. The above results indicate that resveratrol can reduce the vulnerability of myocardial I/R injury in senile myocardium by inhibiting apoptosis and upregulating autophagy through the SIRT1 signaling pathway.

Abstract
Background: Sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) has been associated with longevity and protection against cardiometabolic diseases, but little is known about how it influences human vascular function. Therefore, this study evaluated the effects of SIRT1 activation by resveratrol and energy restriction on vascular reactivity in adults. Methods: A randomized trial allocated 48 healthy adults (24 women and 24 men), aged 55 to 65 years, to resveratrol supplementation or energy restriction for 30 days. Blood lipids, glucose, insulin, C-reactive protein, noradrenaline, SIRT1 (circulating and gene expression), and flow-mediated vasodilation (FMD) and nitrate-mediated vasodilation (NMD) were measured. Results: Both interventions increased circulating SIRT1 (p < 0.001). Pre- and post-tests changes of plasma noradrenaline were significant for both groups (resveratrol: p = 0.037; energy restriction: p = 0.008). Baseline circulating SIRT1 was inversely correlated with noradrenaline (r = -0.508; p < 0.01), and post-treatment circulating SIRT1 was correlated with NMD (r = 0.433; p < 0.01). Circulating SIRT1 was a predictor of FMD in men (p = 0.045), but not in women. SIRT1 was an independent predictor of NMD (p = 0.026) only in the energy restriction group. Conclusions: Energy restriction and resveratrol increased circulating SIRT1 and reduced sympathetic activity similarly in healthy adults. SIRT1 was independently associated with NMD only in the energy restriction group.

Abstract
Wine represents a complex matrix in which microbial interactions can strongly impact the quality of the final product. Numerous studies have focused on optimizing microbial approaches for addressing new challenges to enhance quality, typicity, and food safety. However, few studies have investigated yeasts of different genera as resources for obtaining wines with new, specific traits. Currently, based on the continuous changes in consumer demand, yeast selection within conventional Saccharomyces cerevisiae and unconventional non-Saccharomyces yeasts represents a suitable opportunity. Wine fermentation driven by indigenous yeasts, in the various stages, has achieved promising results in producing wines with desired characteristics, such as a reduced content of ethanol, SO2, and toxins, as well as an increased aromatic complexity. Therefore, the increasing interest in organic, biodynamic, natural, or clean wine represents a new challenge for the wine sector. This review aims at exploring the main features of different oenological yeasts to obtain wines reflecting the needs of current consumers in a sustainability context, providing an overview, and pointing out the role of microorganisms as valuable sources and biological approaches to explore potential and future research opportunities.

Abstract
Resveratrol (RES), a natural polyphenolic compound found in red wine and grape skins, has attracted significant attention due to its cardioprotective properties. DJ-1, a multifunctional protein that participated in transcription regulation and antioxidant defense, was shown to provide a significant protective impact in cardiac cells treated with ischemia-reperfusion. We created a myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) model in vivo and in vitro by ligating the left anterior descending branch of rats and subjecting H9c2 cells to anoxia/reoxygenation (A/R) to investigate whether RES reduces myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury by upregulating DJ-1. We discovered that RES dramatically enhanced cardiac function in rats with I/R. Subsequently, we found that RES prevented the rise in autophagy (P62 degradation and LC3-II/LC3-I increase) induced by cardiac ischemia-reperfusion in vitro and in vivo. Notably, the autophagic agonist rapamycin (RAPA) eliminated RES-induced cardioprotective effects. In addition, Further data showed that RES significantly increased the expression of DJ-1 in the myocardium with the treatment of I/R. At the same time, pretreatment with RES reduced phosphorylation of MAPK/ERK kinase kinase 1 (MEKK1) and Jun N-terminal Kinase (JNK) stimulated by cardiac ischemia-reperfusion, and Beclin-1 mRNA and protein levels while decreasing lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) and improving cell viability. However, the lentiviral shDJ-1 and JNK agonist anisomycin disrupted the effects of RES. In summary, RES could inhibit autophagy against myocardial ischemia-reperfusion injury through DJ-1 modulation of the MEKK1/JNK pathway, providing a novel therapeutic strategy for cardiac homeostasis.

Abstract
Saro_0803 is a transcriptional factor modulating the transcription of the stilbene-degrading enzyme gene nov1 in Novosphingobium aromaticivorans DSM 12444. Reportedly, Saro_0803 undergoes resveratrol-mediated dissociation from the nov1 promotor and distinguishes resveratrol from its precursors, p-coumaric acid and trans-cinnamic acid, enabling the transcriptional factor to serve as a biosensor component for regulating resveratrol biosynthesis. However, little is known about the molecular mechanisms underlying the Saro_0803 interactions with either the nov1 promotor gene or resveratrol, which undermines the potential for Saro_0803 to be further modified for improved biosynthetic performance and other applications. Here, we report the discovery of the 22 bp A/T-rich Saro_0803 binding site near the −10 box of the nov1 promotor (named nov1p22bp). As validated by molecular docking-guided mutagenesis and binding affinity assays, the Saro_0803 binding of its target DNA sequence relies on charge-predominating interactions between several typical positively charged residues and nucleic acid. Furthermore, we semi-quantified the influence of resveratrol presence on Saro_0803–nov1p22bp interaction and identified a bilateral hydrophobic pocket within Saro_0803 comprising four aromatic residues that are crucial to maintaining the resveratrol binding capability of the transcriptional factor. Our data are beneficial to understanding saro_0803′s structural and functional properties, and could provide theoretical clues for future adaptations of this transcriptional factor.

Abstract
The rapid growth of the global population and changes in lifestyle have led to a significant increase in food waste from various industrial, agricultural, and household sources. Nearly one-third of the food produced annually is wasted, resulting in severe resource depletion. Food waste contains rich organic matter, which, if not managed properly, can pose a serious threat to the environment and human health, making the proper disposal of food waste an urgent global issue. However, various types of food waste, such as waste from fruit, vegetables, grains, and other food production and processing, contain important bioactive compounds, such as polyphenols, dietary fiber, proteins, lipids, vitamins, organic acids, and minerals, some of which are found in greater quantities in the discarded parts than in the parts accepted by the market. These bioactive compounds offer the potential to convert food waste into value-added products, and fields including nutritional foods, bioplastics, bioenergy, biosurfactants, biofertilizers, and single cell proteins have welcomed food waste as a novel source. This review reveals the latest insights into the various sources of food waste and the potential of utilizing bioactive compounds to convert it into value-added products, thus enhancing people’s confidence in better utilizing and managing food waste.

Abstract
Ferroptosis, an iron-dependent cell death process, is a potential therapeutic strategy for Lung squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC). Resveratrol (RES) is an anti-tumor polyphenol. However, whether and how RES treats LUSC is not yet known. This study aimed to investigate the effect of RES on LUSC and to explore its potential mechanism. This study used a combination of proteomics, bioinformatics, clinical samples, and cell experiments to study the interaction between HMMR and the ferroptosis signaling pathway and investigate the role of RES in regulating tumor immune microenvironment and anti-tumor by cytotoxic CD8 +T cells in LUSC. Ferroptosis signaling pathway and HMMR were involved in the LUSC tumor immune microenvironment and correlated with worse prognosis of LUSC patients. RES+H520 cells induced a higher level of ferroptosis and MDA, mainly by reducing the expression of GPX4 and SLC7A11, inducing the expression of ACSL4 and TFRC. HMMR, GSH, and SOD contents were lower observed than in H520 cells. When HMMR was expressed, SLC7A11 was also highly expressed in LUSC, and there was an interaction between HMMR expression and SLC7A11. In addition, RES increased the TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-12, and IL-2 expression and increased the cytotoxic effects of CD8 +T cells expressions in LUSC. Resveratrol regulates SLC7A11-HMMR interaction, activates ferroptosis, enhances the cytotoxic effect of CD8 +T cells, and regulates the tumor immune microenvironment. Based on the pathogenesis of LUSC and the clinical efficacy of RES, this study explored the influence of RES on LUSC, clarified its biological effects, and further provided cell biological basis for the clinical application of RES, which could guide clinical combination and personalized medicine, improve the response rate of immunotherapy and benefit more patients with LUSC.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Thyroid gland affection by Fluorosis is documented in a number of previous studies. Resveratrol is a natural compound of plant origin. Its protective role was demonstrated previously in mice and rats against fluoride-induced hepatotoxicity and neurotoxicity. AIM to detect the thyro-protective role of Resveratrol in sodium fluoride rat model. MATERIAL AND METHODS Forty adult male albino rats were distributed equally into: Group I (control): given 5 ml distilled water; Group II (Resveratrol): received 30 mg/kg Resveratrol; Group III (Sodium fluoride): given 10 mg/kg of Sodium Fluoride dissolved in 2.5 ml distilled water; Group IV (Sodium fluoride + Resveratrol): received 10 mg/kg of Sodium Fluoride and 30 mg/kg of Resveratrol. All doses were administered once daily by intra-gastric intubation. By the end of the experiment, rats were sedated by intra-peritoneal injection of Sodium thiopental; blood samples were collected, and thyroid lobes were dissected then processed for examination. RESULTS In the control and Resveratrol groups, there were multiple variable follicles filled with homogenous eosinophilic colloid and lined with flat to cuboidal thyrocytes. Large pale-staining Para follicular cells. In the Sodium fluoride - treated group there were multiple dark stained nuclei of shrunken and exfoliated cells, areas of exudate and multiple layered follicular cells with high activity of Para follicular cells immuno-histochemically. Sodium fluoride+ Resveratrol - treated group appeared with almost preserved control appearance. Findings were confirmed using morphometric and electron microscopic studies. CONCLUSION Resveratrol supplementation with sodium fluoride restored almost all damaged appearance and functions of the thyroid cells to normal values. Further studies are necessary to examine the extended effect of Resveratrol with increased dosage or time of treatment.

Abstract
The potential of polyphenols for treating chronic-degenerative diseases (particularly neurodegenerative diseases) is attractive. However, the selection of the best polyphenol for each treatment, the mechanisms by which they act, and their efficacy are frequently discussed. In this review, the basics and the advances in the field, as well as suggestions for using natural and synthetic polyphenols alone or in a combinatorial strategy with stem cell assays, are compiled and discussed. Thus, stem cells exhibit several responses when polyphenols are added to their environment, which could provide us with knowledge for advancing the elucidation of the origin of neurodegeneration. But also, polyphenols are being included in the innovative strategies of novel therapies for treating neurodegenerative diseases as well as metabolic diseases related to neurodegeneration. In this regard, flavonoid compounds are suggested as the best natural polyphenols due to their several mechanisms for acting in ameliorative effects; but increasing reports are involving other polyphenols. Even if some facts limiting bioactivity prevent them from conventional use, some natural polyphenols and derivatives hold the promise for being improved compounds, judged by their induced effects. The current results suggest polyphenols as enhancers of stem cell therapy against the targeted diseases.

Tea (Camellia sinensis (L.) Kuntze-surname of German origin) is a popular beverage consumed worldwide due to its health benefits. Its quality depends on measuring features that may discriminate teas from distinct provenances. Protected designation of origin (PDO) is therefore a very useful label for tea quality evaluation. In the present work, antioxidant activity profiles obtained from microfluidic paper-based analytical devices (µPADs) were analyzed by chemometrics to determine the tea geographic origin. Based on the existing literature, we constructed a database containing chemical data from 26 samples and evaluated it by principal component analysis (PCA) coupled to linear discriminant analysis (LDA). Antioxidant activity was an effective LDA predictor for sample discrimination accomplishing accuracies from 75 to 82%. Modeling performance was favored by an external validation method. The best classification model was found using the first nine PCs as input variables. Training samples achieved a perfect success rate, while the test ones were predicted with 83% specificity, 100% sensitivity, and 90% overall accuracy. The modeling robustness was verified by integrating AUC (0.943) from ROC curve. The PCA-LDA approach taken here demonstrated that the teas coming from different countries can be correctly authenticated through µPADs, thus contributing to certificate samples PDO. Abstract
AbstractPulsed electric fields effect was studied on the physico-chemical and general phenolic composition as colour characteristics and stilbene content in must and wine. For this purpose, a continuous pulsed electric fields equipment was used to treat three red grape varieties of DOCa Rioja. Graciano, Tempranillo and Grenache wines from these grapes were elaborated with different maceration times, 2 days in the untreated sample (control) and the PEF-treated sample (PEF), and normal maceration time in another untreated sample (control-NM). Parameters as colour intensity, anthocyanin content, total polyphenol index and tannin content showed no differences between the PEF sample with 2 days of maceration and the control-NM sample, except in the case of Tempranillo wines. Total stilbenes, trans-resveratrol and trans-piceid of Graciano wines elaborated from PEF samples showed a higher concentration than the control wines. Alternatively, PEF wines and control-NM wines showed no differences between them. Tempranillo variety wines presented no differences between the three types of samples. In the Grenache variety, only trans-piceid levels showed differences between control and PEF wines. Moreover, relationship between must and wine characteristics was evaluated and compared between different samples. The trend lines obtained for the CI, TPI and AC parameters for samples of Graciano, Tempranillo and Garnacha indicate that the initial content of compounds extracted significantly affected the days of maceration necessary to obtain the appropriate wine. The results obtained increase the knowledge of pulsed electric fields as a technology available for use in the winery to elaborate red wines with reduced maceration time.

Moderate Ethanol-Preconditioning Offers Ischemic Tolerance Against Focal Cerebral Ischemic/Reperfusion: Role of Large Conductance Calcium-Activated Potassium Channel. Abstract
The mechanism underlying moderate ethanol (EtOH)-preconditioning (PC) against ischemic brain injury remains unclear. We evaluated the role of large conductance calcium-sensitive potassium (BKCa) channels in EtOH-PC. Almost one hundred and ninety normal adult SD rats (8 to 10 weeks, 320-350 g) were enrolled in this study. Ischemic/reperfusion (I/R) brain injury was induced in rats by middle cerebral artery occlusion for 2 h followed by reperfusion for 24 h. EtOH or the BKCa channel opener, NS11021, was administered 24 h before I/R with or without pre-treatment with the BKCa channel blocker, paxilline. Infarct volumes were measured by tissue staining and imaging, and neurological functions were assessed by a scoring system. The expression of BKCa channel subunit α was detected by Western blotting, and cell apoptosis was assessed using staining. Prior (24 h) administration of ethanol that produced a peak plasma concentration of ~ 45 mg/dl in rats would offer neuroprotection after cerebral I/R. In addition, the expression of BKCa channel α-subunit was significantly increased 24 h after EtOH-PC (n = 10; control: 2.00 ± 0.09, EtOH: 1.00 ± 0.06; P < 0.5). Compared to I/R, EtOH-PC enhanced the expression of BKCa channel α-subunit both in the penumbra (n = 10; 24 h: I/R: 1.25 ± 0.10, EtOH-PC + I/R: 1.99 ± 0.12; P < 0.01; 4 h: I/R: 1.03 ± 0.03, EtOH-PC + I/R: 1.49 ± 0.05; P < 0.001) and infarct core (n = 10; 4 h: I/R: 1.04 ± 0.04, EtOH-PC + I/R: 1.42 ± 0.05; P < 0.001), improved the neurological function (n = 10; I/R: 14.00 (12.75-15.00), EtOH-PC + I/R: 7.00 (4.75-8.25); P < 0.001), attenuated the apoptosis (n = 10; I/R: 26.80 ± 0.69, EtOH-PC + I/R: 8.46 ± 0.31; P < 0.001), and decreased the infarct volume (n = 10; I/R: 244.00 ± 26.24, EtOH-PC + I/R: 70.09 ± 14.69; P < 0.001) after experimental cerebral I/R. These changes were reversed by paxilline administration. The moderate EtOH-PC protects against I/R-induced brain damage dependent on the upregulation BKCa channels.

Abstract
Ischemia-reperfusion myocardial damage is a paradoxical tissue injury occurring during percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) patients. Although this damage could account for up to 50% of the final infarct size, there has been no available pharmacological treatment until now. Oxidative stress contributes to the underlying production mechanism, exerting the most marked injury during the early onset of reperfusion. So far, antioxidants have been shown to protect the AMI patients undergoing PCI to mitigate these detrimental effects; however, no clinical trials to date have shown any significant infarct size reduction. Therefore, it is worthwhile to consider multitarget antioxidant therapies targeting multifactorial AMI. Indeed, this clinical setting involves injurious effects derived from oxygen deprivation, intracellular pH changes and increased concentration of cytosolic Ca2+ and reactive oxygen species, among others. Thus, we will review a brief overview of the pathological cascades involved in ischemia-reperfusion injury and the potential therapeutic effects based on preclinical studies involving a combination of antioxidants, with particular reference to resveratrol and quercetin, which could contribute to cardioprotection against ischemia-reperfusion injury in myocardial tissue. We will also highlight the upcoming perspectives of these antioxidants for designing future studies.

Abstract
Airborne particulate matter (PM) exerts huge negative impacts on human health worldwide, not only targeting the respiratory system but more importantly inducing and aggravating associated chronic diseases like asthma, lung cancer, atherosclerosis, diabetes mellitus and Alzheimer diseases. Food-derived bioactive compounds like vitamins, dietary polyphenols, omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids and sulforaphane are feasible alternative therapeutic approaches against PM-mediated potential health damages, drawing great attention in recent years. In this review, the association between PM exposure and risks of developing chronic diseases, and the detailed mechanisms underlying the detrimental effects of PM will be discussed. Subsequently, principal food-derived bioactive compounds, with emphasize on the preventative or protective effects against PM, along with potential mechanisms will be elucidated. This comprehensive review will discuss and present current research findings to reveal the nutritional intervention as a preventative or therapeutic strategy against ambient air pollution, thereby lowering the risk of developing chronic diseases.

Abstract
Resveratrol is a polyphenol with antioxidant properties and possible beneficial effects on human health. Grapes, peanuts, berries, cacao beans and red wine contain resveratrol. Resveratrol attracts attention due to its bioactive properties, however, the concentration of this compound is not high in grape and wine. Therefore, different studies have been carried out to increase resveratrol level in these products. Several factors such as the grapevine variety, the climatic conditions and the viticultural practices used to create stress on the vine affect the level of resveratrol. Winemaking technologies applied during pre-fermentation, fermentation and post–fermentation stages could also have an effect on the concentration of this stilbene. In addition, recent studies have evaluated biotechnological approaches through the use of different bacteria and yeast strains to produce wine with increased resveratrol content. In this review, the most important factors contributing to increase the resveratrol concentration in grapes and wines are examined. Besides, analytical methods to determine resveratrol content in wine are addressed.

Abstract
In varicocele, the main cause of sperm DNA damage is oxidative stress (OS). Resveratrol, a polyphenol with antioxidant properties, can protect cells from injuries caused by OS. We investigated the benefits of resveratrol against reproductive damage caused by experimental varicocele induced from peripuberty. Eighty peripubertal male rats were distributed into 4 groups: sham-control (S), varicocele (V), resveratrol (R) and varicocele treated with resveratrol (VR). Varicocele was induced through the partial ligature of the left renal vein. Resveratrol was given in a daily dose of 300 mg/kg body weight (gavage). Sperm samples were collected at 100 days of age for vitality, DNA fragmentation and chromatin protamination evaluations. OS analyses were carried out. Rats from all groups were mated with healthy primiparous females for evaluation of reproductive capacity and embryonic quality. The V group showed reduction of sperm vitality, altered chromatin protamination and sperm DNA integrity and high levels of OS. The VR group showed an improvement of oxidative status, sperm vitality, DNA integrity and chromatin structure, and an enhancement in the gestational index and embryonic quality. Therefore, we showed in this experimental model that resveratrol is a promising nutraceutical adjuvant and should be deeply studied to mitigate subfertility in varicocele.

Abstract
Resveratrol (Res) is a polyphenol with a variety of biological activities. However, whether Res can prevent myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (I/R) injury is not yet known. This study aimed to investigate the protective effect of Res on myocardial I/R injury and to explore its potential mechanism. H9c2 cells were used for the in vitro experiments and oxygen-glucose deprivation/reoxygenation (OGD/R) model was established. Rats were ligated and perfused by the left anterior descending branch with or without Res (50 mg/kg·bw) for 14 days.The higher level of oxidative stress and Fe2+ content was observed in OGD/R-induced H9c2 cells than that of normal cells. OGD/R-induced H9c2 cells showed increased ferroptosis, mainly by reducing the expression of glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) and ferritin heavy chain 1 (FTH1), but enhancing the expression of transferrin receptor 1 (TfR1). Both in vivo and in vitro experiments indicated that Res reduced the level of oxidative stress and Fe2 + content. In addition, Res inhibited ferroptosis, decreased TfR1 expression, and increased the expressions of FTH1 and GPX4 in OGD/R-induced H9c2 cells and I/R rats. Moreover, we found that Res inhibited ferroptosis by the regulation of ubiquity specific peptidase 19 (USP19)-Beclin1 autophagy. Res protects against myocardial I/R injury via reducing oxidative stress and attenuating ferroptosis. Res could be a potential agent to the prevention of myocardial I/R injury.

Abstract
Doxorubicin (DOX) is a most common anthracycline chemotherapeutic agent; however, its clinical efficacy is limited due to its severe and irreversible cardiotoxicity. Ferroptosis, characterized by iron overload and lipid peroxidation, plays a pivotal role in DOX-induced cardiotoxicity. Resveratrol (RSV) displays cardioprotective and anticancer effects, owing to its antioxidative and anti-inflammatory properties. However, the role and mechanism of RSV in DOX-mediated ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes is unclear. This study showed that DOX decreased cell viability, increased iron accumulation and lipid peroxidation in H9c2 cells; however, these effects were reversed by RSV and ferroptosis inhibitor ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) pre-treatment. Additionally, RSV significantly increased the cell viability of H9c2 cells treated with ferroptosis inducers Erastin (Era) and RSL3. Mechanistically, RSV inhibited mitochondrial reactive oxygen species (mtROS) overproduction and upregulated the p62-NRF2/HO-1 pathway. RSV-induced NRF2 activation was partially dependent on p62, and the selective inhibition of p62 (using p62-siRNA interference) or NRF2 (using NRF2 specific inhibitor, ML385) significantly abolished the anti-ferroptosis function of RSV. Furthermore, RSV treatment protected mice against DOX-induced cardiotoxicity, including significantly improving left ventricular function, ameliorating myocardial fibrosis and suppressing ferroptosis. Consistent with in vitro results, RSV also upregulated the p62-NRF2/HO-1 expression, which was inhibited by DOX, in the myocardium. Notably, the protective effect of RSV in DOX-mediated ferroptosis was similar to that of Fer-1 in vitro and in vivo. Thus, the p62-NRF2 axis plays a critical role in regulating DOX-induced ferroptosis in cardiomyocytes. RSV as a potent p62 activator has potential as a therapeutic target in preventing DOX-induced cardiotoxicity via ferroptosis modulation.

Abstract
Some bioactive ingredients in foods are unstable and easily degraded during processing, storage, transportation and digestion. To enhance the stability and bioavailability, some food hydrogels have been developed to encapsulate these unstable compounds. In this paper, the preparation methods, formation mechanisms, physicochemical and functional properties of some protein hydrogels, polysaccharide hydrogels and protein-polysaccharide composite hydrogels were comprehensively summarized. Since the hydrogels have the ability to control the release and enhance the bioavailability of bioactive ingredients, the encapsulation and release mechanisms of polyphenols, flavonoids, carotenoids, vitamins and probiotics by hydrogels were further discussed. This review will provide a comprehensive reference for the deep application of polysaccharide/protein hydrogels in food industry.

Abstract
Simple Summary Of all yearly deaths attributable to alcohol consumption globally, approximately 12% are due to cancers, representing approximately 0.4 million deceased individuals. Ethanol metabolism disturbs cell biochemistry by targeting the structure and function of essential biomolecules (proteins, nucleic acids, and lipids) and by provoking alterations in cell programming that lead to cancer development and cancer malignancy. A better understanding of the metabolic and cell signaling realm affected by ethanol is paramount to designing effective treatments and preventive actions tailored to specific neoplasias. Abstract The World Health Organization identifies alcohol as a cause of several neoplasias of the oropharynx cavity, esophagus, gastrointestinal tract, larynx, liver, or female breast. We review ethanol’s nonoxidative and oxidative metabolism and one-carbon metabolism that encompasses both redox and transfer reactions that influence crucial cell proliferation machinery. Ethanol favors the uncontrolled production and action of free radicals, which interfere with the maintenance of essential cellular functions. We focus on the generation of protein, DNA, and lipid adducts that interfere with the cellular processes related to growth and differentiation. Ethanol’s effects on stem cells, which are responsible for building and repairing tissues, are reviewed. Cancer stem cells (CSCs) of different origins suffer disturbances related to the expression of cell surface markers, enzymes, and transcription factors after ethanol exposure with the consequent dysregulation of mechanisms related to cancer metastasis or resistance to treatments. Our analysis aims to underline and discuss potential targets that show more sensitivity to ethanol’s action and identify specific metabolic routes and metabolic realms that may be corrected to recover metabolic homeostasis after pharmacological intervention. Specifically, research should pay attention to re-establishing metabolic fluxes by fine-tuning the functioning of specific pathways related to one-carbon metabolism and antioxidant processes.

Abstract
Resveratrol, in wines, has been implicated to be primarily responsible for the French paradox, remaining controversial. Herein, we elucidated the representative vasodilation-increasing polyphenols from concord grape juice (CGJ) using ex vivo-to-in vivo extrapolation (EVIVE). We verified the interference-free antioxidant response of CGJ post-dose supernatant of deproteinated serum (CPSDS, as ex vivo proxy) in isolated aortic rings, and in healthy, and H2O2-treated endothelial cells (H-ECs). Syringic acid and ferulic acid (SF) were detected in CGJ and post-dose rat serum (PRS). In isolated aortic rings and H-ECs, polyphenols alone, or in combination, at doses equivalent to those detected in PRS, quantitatively reflected endothelium-dependent vasodilation of CPSDS, as evidenced by nitric oxide (NO) formation-mediated antioxidation-sensitive activation of Src kinase with subsequent PI3/Akt-dependent phosphorylation of endothelial NO synthase. Using EVIVE, SF closely reflected CGJ in coronary flow-mediated vasodilation. Hence, SF application in precision ethnomedicine may redefine antioxidant-sensitive vasoprotective resveratrol of the French paradox.

Abstract
The use of natural products together with standard antimicrobial drugs has recently received more attention as a strategy to combat infectious diseases caused by multidrug-resistant (MDR) microorganisms. This study aimed to evaluate the capacity of a galactose-binding lectin from Vatairea macrocarpa seeds (VML) to modulate antibiotic activity against standard and MDR Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacterial strains. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) obtained for VML against all strains was not clinically relevant (MIC ≥ 1024 μg/mL). However, when VML was combined with the antibacterial drugs gentamicin, norfloxacin and penicillin, a significant increase in antibiotic activity was observed against S. aureus, whereas the combination of VML and norfloxacin presented decreased and, hence, antagonistic antibiotic activity against E. coli. By its inhibition of hemagglutinating activity, gentamicin (MIC = 50 mM) revealed its interaction with the carbohydrate-binding site (CBS) of VML. Using molecular docking, it was found that gentamicin interacts with residues that constitute the CBS of VML with a score of - 120.79 MDS. It is this interaction between the antibiotic and the lectin's CBS that may be responsible for the enhanced activity of gentamicin in S. aureus. Thus, our results suggest that the VML can be an effective modulating agent against S. aureus. This is the first study to report the effect of lectins as modulators of bacterial sensitivity, and as such, the outcome of this study could lay the groundwork for future research involving the use of lectins and conventional antibiotics against such infectious diseases such as community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (MRSA).

Abstract
Polyphenols widely exists in various foods, including main crops, fruits, beverages and some wines. Famous representatives of polyphenols, such as resveratrol in red wine, (-)-epigallocatechin gallate in green tea, chlorogenic acid in coffee, anthocyanins in colored fruits, procyanidins in grape seed have become hot research topics in food science and nutrition. There have been thousands of papers on the biochemistry, chemistry, nutritional values and population-based investigations of dietary polyphenols. In this chapter, we reviewed the published articles and database of dietary polyphenols to draw a profile for the classification, structural identification, and biological activities mainly based on enzymes, cell bioassay and animal models, as well as the population-based investigation results. The typical compound and its health benefits for each category of polyphenols was also introduced. The identification of dietary polyphenols could be solved by combined spectroscopy methods, of which the liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry is highlighted to greatly increase the efficiency on structural identification. Although the population-based investigation showed some controversial results for health benefits, the multi-functions of dietary polyphenols on preventing metabolic syndromes, various cancers and neurodegenerative disease have attracted much attention.

Abstract
Resveratrol (trans-3,4',5-trihydroxystilbene) is a natural stilbene phytoalexin which is also found to be good for human health. Cultivated peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), a worldwide important legume crop, is one of the few sources of human's dietary intake of resveratrol. Although the variations of resveratrol contents among peanut varieties were observed, the variations across environments and its underlying genetic basis were poorly investigated. In this study, the resveratrol content in seeds of a recombination inbred line (RIL) population (Zhonghua 6 × Xuhua 13, 186 progenies) were quantified by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method across four environments. Genotypes, environments and genotype × environment interactions significantly influenced the resveratrol contents in the RIL population. A total of 8,114 high-quality single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were identified based on double-digest restriction-site-associated DNA sequencing (ddRADseq) reads. These SNPs were clustered into bins using a reference-based method, which facilitated the construction of high-density genetic map (2,183 loci with a total length of 2,063.55 cM) and the discovery of several chromosome translocations. Through composite interval mapping (CIM), nine additive quantitative trait loci (QTL) for resveratrol contents were identified on chromosomes A01, A07, A08, B04, B05, B06, B07, and B10 with 5.07-8.19% phenotypic variations explained (PVE). Putative genes within their confidential intervals might play roles in diverse primary and secondary metabolic processes. These results laid a foundation for the further genetic dissection of resveratrol content as well as the breeding and production of high-resveratrol peanuts.

Abstract
The in vitro cell cultures derived from the grapevine (Vitis vinifera L.) have been used for the production of stilbenes treated with different biotic and abiotic elicitors. The red-grape cultivar Váh has been elicited by natural cellulose from Trichoderma viride, the cell wall homogenate from Fusarium oxysporum and synthetic jasmonates. The sodium-orthovanadate, known as an inhibitor of hypersensitive necrotic response in treated plant cells able to enhance production and release of secondary metabolite into the cultivation medium, was used as an abiotic elicitor. Growth of cells and the content of phenolic compounds trans-resveratrol, trans-piceid, δ-viniferin, and ɛ-viniferin, were analyzed in grapevine cells treated by individual elicitors. The highest accumulation of analyzed individual stilbenes, except of trans-piceid has been observed after treatment with the cell wall homogenate from F. oxysporum. Maximum production of trans-resveratrol, δ- and ɛ-viniferins was triggered by treatment with cellulase from T. viride. The accumulation of trans-piceid in cell cultures elicited by this cellulase revealed exactly the opposite effect, with almost three times higher production of trans-resveratrol than that of trans-piceid. This study suggested that both used fungal elicitors can enhance production more effectively than commonly used jasmonates.

Abstract
Polyphenols are a group of phytochemicals with potential health-promoting effects. They are classified as flavonoid (flavonols, flavanols, flavones, flavanones, isoflavones, and anthocyanins) and non-flavonoid molecules (phenolic acids, hydroxycinnamic acids, lignans, stilbenes, and tannins). Although an increasing number of trials have shown a correlation among polyphenol consumption and a reduction in risk factors for chronic diseases, discrepancies in explaining their positive effects have been found in terms of the bioavailability. In fact, polyphenols show a low bioavailability due to several factors: interaction with the food matrix, the metabolic processes mediated by the liver (phase I and II metabolism), intestine and microbiota. On the other hand, the biological activities of phenol compounds may be mediated by their metabolites, which are produced in vivo, and recent studies have confirmed that these molecules may have antioxidant and anti-phlogistic properties. This review discusses the studies performed in vivo, which consider the polyphenol bioavailability and their different food sources. Factors influencing the biological effects of the main classes of polyphenols are also considered.

Abstract
Several epidemiological studies and clinical trials have reported the beneficial effects of green tea, coffee, wine, and curry on human health, with its anti-obesity, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and neuroprotective properties. These effects, which have been supported using cell-based and animal studies, are mainly attributed to epigallocatechin gallate found in green tea, chlorogenic acid in coffee, resveratrol in wine, and curcumin in curry. Polyphenols are proposed to function via various mechanisms, the most important of which is related to reactive oxygen species (ROS). These polyphenols exert conflicting dual actions as anti- and pro-oxidants. Their anti-oxidative actions help scavenge ROS and downregulate nuclear factor-κB to produce favorable anti-inflammatory effects. Meanwhile, pro-oxidant actions appear to promote ROS generation leading to the activation of 5′-AMP-activated protein kinase, which modulates different enzymes and factors with health beneficial roles. Currently, it remains unclear how these polyphenols exert either pro- or anti-oxidant effects. Similarly, several human studies showed no beneficial effects of these foods, and, by extension polyphenols, on obesity. These inconsistencies may be attributed to different confounding study factors. Thus, this review provides a state-of-the-art update on these foods and their principal polyphenol components, with an assumption that it prevents obesity.

Abstract
The aim of this work was to investigate the effect of meteorological conditions on resveratrol concentration of red wines produced in Piacenza viticultural region (Italy). In this regard, six representative estates producing Colli Piacentini Gutturnio DOC (a blend of V. vinifera L. cvs. Barbera and Croatina) vintage wines were analysed for trans- and cis-resveratrol over an 8-year period (1998–2005). Grapes were taken from the same vineyard in each estate by using the same enological practices over the entire investigated period. The meteorological conditions corresponding to the production areas were recorded, and bioclimatic indices were calculated as well. Overall, cis-resveratrol concentration was negatively correlated to Huglin index and August mean temperature, whilst positive correlation coefficients were found when considering the Selianinov index and the rainfall of September.

Abstract
Temperature, water, solar radiation, and atmospheric CO2 concentration are the main abiotic factors that are changing in the course of global warming. These abiotic factors govern the synthesis and degradation of primary (sugars, amino acids, organic acids, etc.) and secondary (phenolic and volatile flavor compounds and their precursors) metabolites directly, via the regulation of their biosynthetic pathways, or indirectly, via their effects on vine physiology and phenology. Several hundred secondary metabolites have been identified in the grape berry. Their biosynthesis and degradation have been characterized and have been shown to occur during different developmental stages of the berry. The understanding of how the different abiotic factors modulate secondary metabolism and thus berry quality is of crucial importance for breeders and growers to develop plant material and viticultural practices to maintain high-quality fruit and wine production in the context of global warming. Here, we review the main secondary metabolites of the grape berry, their biosynthesis, and how their accumulation and degradation is influenced by abiotic factors. The first part of the review provides an update on structure, biosynthesis, and degradation of phenolic compounds (flavonoids and non-flavonoids) and major aroma compounds (terpenes, thiols, methoxypyrazines, and C13 norisoprenoids). The second part gives an update on the influence of abiotic factors, such as water availability, temperature, radiation, and CO2 concentration, on berry secondary metabolism. At the end of the paper, we raise some critical questions regarding intracluster berry heterogeneity and dilution effects and how the sampling strategy can impact the outcome of studies on the grapevine berry response to abiotic factors.

Abstract
Grapes are rich in primary and secondary metabolites. Among the secondary metabolites, polyphenolic compounds are the most abundant in grape berries. Besides their important impacts on grape and wine quality, this class of compounds has beneficial effects on human health. Due to their antioxidant activity, polyphenols and phenolic acids can act as anti-inflammatory and anticancerogenic agents, and can modulate the immune system. In grape berries, polyphenols and phenolic acids can be located in the pericarp and seeds, but distribution differs considerably among these tissues. Although some classes of polyphenols and phenolic acids are under strict genetic control, the final content is highly influenced by environmental factors, such as climate, soil, vineyard, and management. This review aims to present the main classes of polyphenolic compounds and phenolic acids in different berry tissues and grape varieties and special emphasis on their beneficial effect on human health.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Resveratrol is a natural polyphenolic compound with a stilbene structure endowed with multiple health-promoting effects. Among phenolic compounds, resveratrol is assigned a leading role in the health-promoting effects of red wine. METHODS The aim of the study was to assess the effect of resveratrol on the cardiovascular system in the experimental and clinical studies conducted so far. Moreover, the paper discusses the results of the most recent meta-analyses assessing resveratrol's therapeutic effect on the cardiovascular system in humans. RESULTS In animal and preclinical studies, resveratrol has demonstrated a wide physiological and biochemical spectrum of activity, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antiplatelet, and anticoagulant activities, which translated into its health-promoting effects on the cardiovascular system. The performed meta-analyses allow to confirm such an impact, however, after the assessment with the use of the SYRCLE's tool, these studies are burdened with a high risk of bias, and the results are not clearly presented. CONCLUSION Despite numerous articles and clinical studies, the convincing beneficial mechanisms of resveratrol as well as its health-promoting effects in cardiovascular diseases have not been clearly confirmed in humans. Therefore, there is a need for further clinical studies, especially randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trials to objectively confirm the possible health-promoting effects of this substance and to determine both the efficacy and safety, and possible therapeutic potential.

Abstract
In this work, a facile kinetic matching approach for total polyphenol content (TPC) measurement was developed based on the adoption of microfluidic paper-based analytical devices with symmetric channel distribution. A set of Folin-Ciocalteu reactions performed on the same paper chip were activated all at the same time through synchronized filling of sodium carbonate solution among individual channels. Gallic acid was found valid as a standard compound for kinetic matching measurement of tea samples. TPC of tea infusions was successfully measured within ten minutes without any complexed time control procedure needed. Under the optimized conditions, the new developed method showed good linearity in the TPC range of 10-100 mg/L (r > 0.9955) and the inter-chip precision was 5.6% (n = 11). The results measured with the new developed approach were in good agreement with those with the conventional FC assay.

Abstract
The wine industry is focused on the producing wine mostly from European grapevine varieties (Vitis vinifera L.). China has experienced a significant growth of the vineyard surface, based on the cultivation of these grapevine varieties. Currently, China has become one of the countries with the largest surface of planted vineyards in the world. In the last years, there has been a trend to oenologically and viticulturally revalorize certain autochthonous grapevine species. China holds a great diversity of Vitis species, which are being the focus of study. This could be an important alternative for the diversification of wine production, providing new products with a strong identity. Additionally, the varietal homogenization has increased the vineyard genetic vulnerability in relation to the emergence of grapevine diseases and their resistance to chemical fungicides. In this way, non-Vitis vinifera species are characterized by having a high resistance to a wide range of biotic and abiotic factors, which can bring an opportunity to breed new varieties. However, there is little available information about the oenological potential of these species, which makes it a current interesting topic. Therefore, this review aims to summarize the oenological potential of non-Vitis vinifera species found in China, discussing their potential effects on human health and thus, to propose some Chinese wild grapes for their use in breeding programs.

Abstract
trans-Resveratrol (TRA), is one of the indicators to evaluate the quality of red wines. In this study, a novel flexible electrochemical sensor using direct laser-induced graphene (LIG) technique that transforms the commercial Kapton tape into three-dimensional (3D) porous graphene was developed for sensitive detection of TRA molecules in red wines. For the first time, the strategy of 'double layer' (Kapton/polyimide) was employed to obtain the LIG with undamaged shape and excellent electrical properties. The mechanism of heat absorption and dissipation of laser-induced process was investigated in detail. The prepared electrochemical sensor with excellent repeatability, stability, reproducibility, and reliability, appears an excellent linear response within the TRA concentration range from 0.2 to 50 μmol L-1 and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.16 μmol L-1. Furthermore, the developed sensor can be applied for the evaluation of TRA level in red wines and grape skins with a satisfactory result. The sensor may be potential in analysis of active compounds in food or environmental samples.
