Abstract
Swollen culms of Zizania latifolia possess a peculiar flavor, nutritional value and health-promoting effects. This study investigated the wound healing ability of polysaccharides isolated from Zizania latifolia (ZLP). Through in vitro assays, ZLP demonstrated negligible cytotoxicity and promoted the migration and phagocytosis of Staphylococcus aureus by macrophages where ZLP-2 had a significantly greater effect. Moreover, ZLP-2 has a higher purity and molecular weight, an integral and large lamellar morphology, and a larger particle size in solution, suggesting its ability to form films. Thus, ZLP-2 was fabricated as a gel formulation for topical application. The in vivo results showed that the ZLP-2 gel had significantly greater effects than did the autonomous healing process according to quantitative analysis of the wound closure area. The ZLP-2 gel decreased the levels of TNF-α and IL-6 in wounded tissue. Furthermore, the quantification of the molecular indexes via qRT-PCR revealed that the levels of tnf-α, tgf-β, mcp-1, ifn-γ, inos, and vegf in the treated group increased during the inflammatory and proliferation stages but decreased after wound closure. These results suggest that ZLP-2 has great potential in pharmaceutical applications for wound care.

Abstract
Smooth cordgrass (Spartina alterniflora) is a native salt marsh plant along the Atlantic coast but has become an invasive species in coastal regions in China, as well as other areas. Utilizing it for resources has become a control measure in reducing the spread of S. alterniflora. This study assesses the nutritional and phytochemical properties of the edible stems of S. alterniflora collected from three locations in Fujian province, China. The tender stems of S. alterniflora exhibit a rich nutritional profile, with high levels of protein, carbohydrates, and fats, and significant amounts of essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, indicating their potential as a nutritious addition to the diet or forage. In addition, the levels of potential contaminants, including nitrate, nitrite, cadmium, lead, and chromium, are below the established safe thresholds for consumption. Our results provide valuable information for the sustainable utilization of S. alterniflora resources and will contribute to the integrated control of S. alterniflora.

Abstract
Weed communities influence the dynamics of ecosystems, particularly in disturbed environments where anthropogenic activities often result in higher pollution. Understanding the dynamics existing between native weed communities and invasive species in disturbed environments is crucial for effective management and normal ecosystem functioning. Recognising the potential resistance of native weed communities to invasion in disturbed environments can help identify suitable native plants for restoration operations. This review aims to investigate the adaptations exhibited by native and non-native weeds that may affect invasions within disturbed environments. Factors such as ecological characteristics, altered soil conditions, and adaptations of native weed communities that potentially confer a competitive advantage relative to non-native or invasive weeds in disturbed environments are analysed. Moreover, the roles of biotic interactions such as competition, mutualistic relationships, and allelopathy in shaping the invasion resistance of native weed communities are described. Emphasis is given to the consideration of the resistance of native weeds as a key factor in invasion dynamics that provides insights for conservation and restoration efforts in disturbed environments. Additionally, this review underscores the need for further research to unravel the underlying mechanisms and to devise targeted management strategies. These strategies aim to promote the resistance of native weed communities and mitigate the negative effects of invasive weed species in disturbed environments. By delving deeper into these insights, we can gain an understanding of the ecological dynamics within disturbed ecosystems and develop valuable insights for the management of invasive species, and to restore long-term ecosystem sustainability.

Abstract
Long-term hepatic damage is associated with human morbidity and mortality owing to numerous pathogenic factors. A variety of studies have focused on improving liver health using natural products and herbal medicines. We aimed to investigate the effect of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract (ETZL), which increases the content of tricin via enzymatic hydrolysis, for 8 weeks on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, antioxidant activity, and fatigue compared to a placebo. Healthy Korean adult males aged 19-60 years were randomized into ETZL treatment and placebo groups, and alcohol consumption was 24.96 and 28.64 units/week, respectively. Alanine transaminase, a blood marker associated with liver cell injury, significantly decreased after 8 weeks compared to the baseline in the ETZL treatment group (p = 0.004). After 8 weeks, the treatment group showed significant changes in the levels of high-density lipoprotein and hepatic steatosis index compared to the baseline (p = 0.028 and p = 0.004, respectively). ETZL treatment tended to reduce antioxidant-activity-related factors, total antioxidant status, and malondialdehyde, but there was no significant difference. In the multidimensional fatigue scale, ETZL treatment showed a significant reduction in general fatigue and total-fatigue-related values after 8 weeks compared to the baseline (p = 0.012 and p = 0.032, respectively). Taken together, the 8-week treatment of enzyme-treated Zizania latifolia ethanol extract demonstrated positive effects on liver-related outcomes, lipid metabolism, and mental fatigue without adverse effects on safety-related parameters.

Abstract
The Zizania latifolia is usually infected by the obligate parasitic fungus Ustilago esculenta to form an edible fleshy stem which is an aquatic vegetable called Jiaobai in China. The infection by the teliospore (T) strain of U. esculenta induces Z. latifolia forming gray fleshy stems, while the mycelia-teliospore (MT) strain of U. esculenta induces white fleshy stems which are more suitable for edibility than gray fleshy stems. The mechanism of this phenomenon is still largely unknown. One of the possible causes is the diversity of endophytic microbial communities between these two fleshy stems. Therefore, we utilized fungal ITS1 and bacterial 16S rDNA amplicon sequencing to investigate the diversity of endophytic microbial communities in the two different fleshy stems of Z. latifolia. The results revealed that the α diversity and richness of endophytic fungi in white Z. latifolia were significantly greater than in gray Z. latifolia. The dominant fungal genus in both fleshy stems was U. esculenta, which accounted for over 90% of the endophytic fungi. The community composition of endophytic fungi in gray and white Z. latifolia was different except for U. esculenta, and a negative correlation was observed between U. esculenta and other endophytic fungi. In addition, the dominant bacterial genus in gray Z. latifolia was Alcaligenaceae which is also negatively correlated with other bacterium communities. Additionally, the co-occurrence network of white Z. latifolia was found to have a stronger scale, connectivity, and complexity compared to that of gray Z. latifolia. And the detected beneficial bacteria and pathogens in the stems of Z. latifolia potentially compete for resources. Furthermore, the function of endophytic bacteria is more abundant than endophytic fungi in Z. latifolia. This research investigated the correlation between the development of Z. latifolia fleshy stems and endophytic microbial communities. Our findings indicate that the composition of endophytic microbial communities is closely related to the type of Z. latifolia fleshy stems. This research also suggests the potential utilization of specific microbial communities to enhance the growth and development of Z. latifolia, thereby contributing to the breeding of Z. latifolia.
