Abstract
Organic compounds display several electronic and structural features which enable their application in various fields, ranging from biological to non-biological. These compounds contain heteroatoms like sulfur, nitrogen and, oxygen, which provide coordination sites to act as ligands in the field of coordination chemistry and are used as chemosensors to detect various metal ions. This review article covers different organic compounds including Schiff bases, thiourea, pyridine, rhodamine, triazole, pyrene, coumarin, imidazole, diaminomaleonitrile, naphthoxazole, pyrimidine, thiophene, thioether, and other functional groups based chemosensors that contain heteroatoms like sulfur, nitrogen and, oxygen for fluorimetric and colorimetric detection of Zn(II) ions in different environmental, agricultural, and biological samples. Further, the sensing performances of these chemosensors have been compared and discussed which could help the readers for the future design of organic fluorescent and colorimetric chemosensors for the detection of Zn(II) ions. We hope this study will support the new thoughts to design a simple, efficient, selective, and sensitive chemosensor for the detection of Zn(II) ions in different samples (environmental, agricultural, and biological).

Abstract
A practical hydrazine-carbothioamide-based fluorescent chemosensor TCC (N-(4-chlorophenyl)-2-(thiophene-2-carbonyl)hydrazine-1-carbothioamide) was applied for Zn2+ detection. TCC exhibited selective fluorescence emission for Zn2+ and did not show any interference with other metal ions. In particular, TCC was utilized for the detection of Zn2+ in paper strips, zebrafish and real water samples. TCC could detect Zn2+ down to 0.39 μM in the solution phase and 51.13 μM in zebrafish. The association ratio between TCC and Zn2+ was determined to be 2:1 by ESI-mass and Job plot. The sensing mechanism of TCC for Zn2+ was illustrated to be a chelation-enhanced fluorescence process through spectroscopic experiments and theoretical calculations.

Abstract
An indole-based fluorescent chemosensor IH-Sal was synthesized to detect Zn2+. IH-Sal displayed a marked fluorescence increment with Zn2+. The detection limit (0.41 μM) of IH-Sal for Zn2+ was greatly below that suggested by the World Health Organization. IH-Sal can quantify Zn2+ in real water samples. More significantly, IH-Sal could determine and depict the presence of Zn2+ in zebrafish. The detecting mechanism of IH-Sal toward Zn2+ was illustrated by fluorescence and UV–visible spectroscopy, DFT calculations, 1H NMR titration and ESI mass.

Abstract
A new bifunctional chemosensor HBP ((E)-2-(2-((5-bromopyridin-2-yl)methylene)hydrazinyl) quinoline) based on heterocyclic compounds was designed and studied. The HBP showed successful detecting ability toward cobalt ion with a UV-visible red-shift and a color change of colorless to pink. Moreover, toward zinc ion, the HBP showed an obvious fluorescence turn-on response. The binding ratio of the HBP to cobalt and zinc was a 2 to 1 for both ions. The detection limits were found to be 10 nM for Co2+ and 18 nM for Zn2+. Based on UV-vis and fluorescent spectral variations, Job plots, ESI-MS, FT-IR and calculations, the binding mechanisms of the HBP toward cobalt and zinc ions were proposed.

Abstract
Among various known hydroxyquinolines, 8-hydroxyquinoline (8-HQ) is the most prevalent moiety due to excellent property for the formation of the complex with different metal ions and anions, and utilized in a wide variety of applications in pharmacological and medicinal fields. 8-Hydroxyquinoline moiety and its analogues acts as fluorophoric ligands on complex formation with alkali and alkaline as well as transition metal ions and anions, thus, considered as an ideal building block in metallo-supramolecular chemistry for recognition, separation, and quantitative investigation of cations. 8-Hydroxyquinoline moiety is also used in various applications for the advancement of novel fluorescent chemosensors in a wide variety of areas viz., material chemistry, bioorganic chemistry, molecular imaging, analytical chemistry, molecular recognition, medical and biological science communities. The present review emphasises on the progress of sensing properties of 8-HQ centred small-molecule fluorescent chemosensors towards several metal ions viz., Fe3+ , Al3+ , Ag+ , Hg2+ , Cu2+ , Pd2+ , Zn2+ , Cr3+ , Cd2+ , Mn2+ , Ca2+ , and K+ and anions such as F- , CN- and PPi, from 2008 to 2020, because of their sensitivity and selectivity in terms of diverse colour changes for different species. This critical and comprehensive review might facilitate the improvement of more prevailing chemosensors for future exciting and broad applications.

Abstract
A benzyl carbazate-based fluorescent chemosensor BCS was designed and synthesized for detection of Zn2+ in aqueous media. BCS displayed a notable fluorescence increase with Zn2+. Detection limit (1.12 μM) of BCS for zinc ion was much lower than the standard of World Health Organization. BCS was used to analyze the amounts of Zn2+ in water samples. Importantly, sensor BCS could be used to image Zn2+ in zebrafish, and a fluorescent test strip of sensor BCS for detecting Zn2+ could be useful for practical purpose. Sensing process of Zn2+ by BCS was demonstrated by DFT calculations, based on an effect of chelation-enhanced fluorescence.

Abstract
A novel Schiff base chemosensor HMID, ((E)‑1‑((2‑hydroxy‑3‑methoxybenzylidene)amino)imidazolidine‑2,4‑dione), have been designed and synthesized. Sensor HMID showed a selectivity to Zn2+ through fluorescence enhancement in aqueous solution. Its detection limit was analyzed as 11.9 μM. Importantly, compound HMID could be applied to image Zn2+ in live cells. Detection mechanism of Zn2+ by HMID was suggested to be an effect of chelation-enhanced fluorescence (CHEF) by DFT calculations. Moreover, HMID could detect Cu2+ with a change of color from colorless to pink. The selective detection mechanism of Cu2+ by HMID was demonstrated to be the promotion of intramolecular charge transfer band by DFT calculations. Additionally, HMID could be employed as a naked-eye colorimetric kit for Cu2+. Therefore, HMID has the ability as a 'single sensor for dual targets'.

Abstract
A nanosensor, based on 8-hydroxyquinoline functionalized graphene oxide, was developed for the fluorescence detection of Zn2+. It showed high selectivity and sensitivity for Zn2+ion in aqueous solution over other metal ions such as Li+, Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Al3+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Hg2+, Ni2+, Pb2+, Fe2+, Fe3+and Cr3+. Due to the linearity of the emission intensity toward Zn2+ concentration, fluorescent technique could be used for the detection of Zn2+ ion even at very low concentrations.

Abstract
A new series of symmetric, bis-cholesteryl-appended, isosorbide derivatives (BCIE, BCIC2 and BCIC4) were designed as gelators to respond to changes in their environment and were synthesized successfully. Among these derivatives, BCIE can gel a wide variety of organic solvents (23 solvents), suggesting that BCIE acts as a more versatile gelator than BCIC2 and BCIC4. The CGC of the gels varies from 1.53 mM in 1-hexanol to 23 mM in pyridine. The results of the gelation ability in different solvents revealed that changing the linking group (ester/carbamate) attached to the cholesteryl units can produce a dramatic change in the gelation behavior of the compounds. The morphology of the as-formed organogels can be regulated by changing the types of organic solvents. The results from electron microscopy studies revealed that the gelator molecule self-assembled into different aggregates, from wrinkled fibers to dense fibers, with the change of solvents. The gels of BCIE in 1-hexanol and 1-octanol exhibited strong CD (circular dichroism) signals, indicating that the gelation induced supramolecular chirality in these gel systems. Secondary forces of van der Waals and π-π stacking (from both 1,2,3-triazole and aromatic units) played important roles in the aggregation of compounds in the solvents according to FTIR and variable temperature (1)H-NMR analysis, and a mechanism for the gel formation was proposed. The gel-to-sol phase transition can be triggered by the addition of trifluoroacetic acid (TFA), and the gel state was obtained slowly (after 1 day) when neutralizing with triethyl amine (TEA), which indicated that the sol ⇄ gel phase transitions are tunable by pH, which is further supported by (1)H-NMR and SEM analysis. In addition, the gel stability of BCIE was investigated using Cu(2+), Cd(2+), Ag(2+), Fe(3+), Hg(2+), Mg(2+), Pd(2+), Al(3+) and Zn(2+), and the results showed that the gel-to-sol phase transition process could be selectively controlled by interaction with Pd(2+) and Zn(2+) because complexation with 1,2,3-triazoles destroyed the interactions between the triazoles, collapsing the gel, which was further evidenced by (1)H-NMR and SEM analysis. However, the gel stability of BCIE was enhanced by the addition of Pd(2+) and Zn(2+) in the presence of pyridine, whereas the gel collapsed in other solvents, which may be due to the chelating effect of the pyridine moiety. Another interesting feature of this gel is that when using the gelator as a stabilizer, stable water in oil (W/O) gel-emulsions were created, in which styrene can be used as the continuous phase and water as the dispersed phase with the stabilizer in the continuous phase of only 2% (w/v). Gel-emulsions were observed with any ratio of water to styrene.

Abstract
A Schiff-base fluorescent probe - 2-((E)-(quinolin-8-ylimino)methyl)quinolin-8-ol (H7L) was synthesized and evaluated as a chemoselective Zn2+ sensor. Upon treatment with Zn2+, the complexation of H7L with Zn2+ resulted in a red shift with a pronounced enhancement in the fluorescence emission intensity in ethanol solution. Moreover, other common alkali, alkaline earth and transition metal ions failed to induce response or minimal spectral changes. Notably, this chemosensor could distinguish clearly Zn2+ from Cd2+. Fluorescence studies on H7L and H7L-Zn2+ complex reveal that the quantum yield strongly increases upon coordination. The stoichiometric ratio and association constant were evaluated using Benesi-Hildebrand relation giving 1:1 stoichiometry. This further corroborated 1:1 complex formation based on Job's plot analyses. This chemosensor exhibits a very good fluorescence sensing ability to Zn2+ over a wide range of pH.

Abstract
The copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne "click" cycloaddition reaction is an efficient coupling reaction that results in the formation of a triazole ring. The wide range of applicable substrates for this reaction allows the construction of a variety of conjugated systems. The additional function of triazoles as metal-ion ligands has led to the click reaction being used for the construction of optical sensors for metal ions. The triazoles are integral binding elements, which are formed in an efficient modular synthesis. Herein, we review recent examples of triazoles as a metal-binding element in conjugated metal-ion sensors.
