Controllable and reversible proton transfer for inorganic cyanide visual sensing based on the deprotonation of azo-phenolic hydroxyl group

Reversible detection of Hg(II) in pure water based on thymine modified nitrogen, sulfur co-doped carbon dots combined with antidote

Conventional Hg²⁺ visual sensors are unsustainable, hindering their practical application for improved water quality and health. In order to address this challenge, herein, N, S co-doped carbon nanodots (NS-CDs) were prepared and well characterized, presented the fluorescent monitoring for Hg²⁺ over other metal ions with the limit of detection (LOD) of 0.47 µM. Next, the CDs were successfully modified by thymine without any fluorescence labelling (referred to as T-NS-CDs). The sensitivity to Hg²⁺ cloud be noticeable enhanced due to the formation of T-Hg²⁺-T specific base pairs. Accordingly, the LOD was calculated with values as low as 1.56 nM. Furthermore, Hg²⁺ could be released and complexed with antidote (meso-2,3-dimercaptosuccinic acid) (DMSA-Hg²⁺), being the responsible for the reversible interconversion between T-Hg²⁺-T and DMSA-Hg²⁺. Interestingly, the proposed sensing system also applies to the fluorescent sensing for Hg²⁺ in tap water with satisfactory recoveries (96.97 %-101.38 %, RSD < 2 %). Thus, by simply combination of elemental doping and surface functionalization, the surface state and functionalities of CDs could be tailorable, endowing the fluorometric sensing towards Hg²⁺ in environmental system.

Chemosensors based on N-heterocyclic dyes: advances in sensing highly toxic ions such as CN- and Hg2

CN- and Hg2+ ions are harmful to both the environment and human health, even at trace levels. Thus, alternative methods for their detection and quantification are highly desirable given that the traditional monitoring systems are expensive and require qualified personnel. Optical chemosensors (probes) have revolutionized the sensing of different species due to their high specificity and sensitivity, corresponding with their modular design. They have also been used in aqueous media and different pH ranges, facilitating their applications in various samples. The design of molecular probes is based on organic dyes, where the key species are N-heterocyclic compounds (NHCs) due to their proven photophysical properties, biocompatibility, and synthetic versatility, which favor diverse applications. Accordingly, this review aims to provide an overview of the reports from 2016 to 2021, in which fluorescent probes based on five- and six-membered N-heterocycles are used for the detection of CN- and Hg2+ ions.

Controllable and reversible sensing cyanide ion using dual-functional Cu(II)-based ensemble

In this work, a dual-functional Cu²⁺-based ensemble (2S·Cu²⁺) was well designed and characterized. Then, the successional and discriminating sensing for CN^- over other competitive species (H₂PO₄^- and biothiols) was achieved based on the disaggregation of 2S·Cu²⁺ ensemble and the deprotonation of imidazole NH of regenerated sensor S in aqueous solution, respectively. The visual sensing mechanism could be clearly demonstrated by ¹H NMR, HRMS and energy changes between the HOMO-LUMO band gaps. Furthermore, the reversibility and reusability of S and 2S·Cu²⁺ upon alternating addition of CN^-/H⁺ and CN^-/Cu²⁺ were studied. Interestingly, the sequential sensing for biothiols (cysteine, glutathione and homocysteine) and CN^- was also realized through spectroscopic methodology and test paper strips. This work may provide a feasible strategy to discriminate CN^- over H₂PO₄^- and biothiols with high selectivity and sensitivity through Cu²⁺-based ensembles.
