Investigating the relationship between job stress, workload and oxidative stress in nurses

Work stress and obsessive-compulsive symptoms in nurses and office workers: a comparative study

Objectives. This study aims to compare the work stress and obsessive-compulsive symptoms of nurses and office workers and to determine the relationship between work stress and obsessive-compulsive symptoms.Methods. A total of 127 nurses and 127 office workers participated in the cross-sectional study and comparative study. Data were collected using the perceived work stress scale and the Maudsley obsessive-compulsive inventory.Results. Nurses had higher work stress scores (p = 0.003) in general than office workers. In particular, nurses with a low (p < 0.039) and average (p < 0.007) economic status, nurses who had been employed for 1-10 years (p < 0.001) and nurses working 40 h per week (p < 0.042) had higher work stress scores than office workers. There was no difference (p > 0.05) between obsessive-compulsive symptom scores. There was a positive significant relationship (p < 0.001) between work stress and obsessive-compulsive symptom scores of nurses and office workers. Work stress explains 6.1% of the obsessive-compulsive symptoms in nurses and 12.4% in office workers.Conclusion. The results of this study concluded that work stress of nurses is higher than that of office workers and work stress affects the obsessive-compulsive symptoms in both groups.

Functional Connectome Hierarchy Distortions in Female Nurses With Occupational Burnout and Its Gene Expression Signatures

BACKGROUND

Burnout has become a serious public health issue worldwide, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. Functional connectome impairments associated with occupational burnout were widely distributed, involving both low-level sensorimotor cortices and high-level association cortices.

PURPOSE

To investigate whether there are hierarchical perturbations in the functional connectomes and if these perturbations are potentially influenced by genetic factors in nurses who feel "burned out."

STUDY TYPE

Prospective, case control.

POPULATION

Thirty-three female nurses with occupational burnout (aged 27-40, 32.42 ± 3.37) and 32 matched nurses who were not feeling burned out (aged 27-42, 32.50 ± 4.21).

FIELD STRENGTH/SEQUENCE

3.0 T, gradient-echo echo-planar imaging sequence (GE-EPI).

ASSESSMENT

Gradient-based techniques were used to depict the perturbations in the multi-dimensional hierarchical structure of the macroscale connectome. Gene expression data were acquired from the Allen Human Brain Atlas.

STATISTICAL TESTS

Cortex-wide multivariate analyses were used for between-group differences in gradients as well as association analyses between the hierarchy distortions and the MBI score (FDR corrected). Partial least squares, spin test and bootstrapping were utilized together to select the gene sets (FDR corrected). Gene enrichment analyses (GO, KEGG and cell-type) were further performed. Significance level: P < 0.05.

RESULTS

There were significant gradient distortions, with strong between-group effects in the somatosensory network and moderate effects in the higher-order default-mode network, which were significantly correlated with the gene expression profiles (r = 0.3171). The most related genes were broadly involved in the cellular response to minerals, neuronal plasticity, and the circadian rhythm pathway (q value < 0.01). Significant enrichments were found in excitatory (r = 0.2588), inhibitory neurons (r = 0.2610), and astrocytes cells (r = 0.2633). Regions affected by burnout severity were mainly distributed in the association and visual cortices.

DATA CONCLUSION

By connecting in vivo imaging to genes, cell classes, and clinical data, this study provides a framework to understand functional impairments in occupational burnout and how the microscopic genetic architecture drive macroscopic distortions.

The Impact of Nurses Job Stress Level on Patients Care in Tertiary Care Hospital

Nursing is dynamic in nature and nurses are often in high level of job stress because of hard job, work load and burden of responsibilities. These stressors can have negative effect on patient care. The focus of study was to evaluate the correlation of nurses’ job stress and quality of care delivered to patients. Objective: To assess the nurses job stress level and the association of job stress and patient care at tertiary care hospital. Methods: The descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted with 144 participants working in tertiary care hospital. The nurses were selected via convenient sampling technique. The duration of study was 6 months. The data were collected by demographic characteristics, Caring Dimension Inventory (CDI-25) and NIOSH Generic Job Stress Questionnaire. Results: The results of this study showed that numbers of females were more 126 (87.5%) and majority of participants in age limit of 21-30 were 92 (63.9%). Most of the participants were bachelor degree holder 137 (95.1) and official job holders were 127 (88.2) at that institute. Large numbers of participants were bed side nurses 124 (86.1%). Most of the nurses felt moderate level of job stress (76.4%) and provide poor patient care (43.1%). The p-value of 0.001 was indication of the conclusion that there were association between nurses’ job stress and patient care delivered to patient. Conclusions: There was significant relation between the job stress and patient care. The job stress had negative effect on patient care delivered to patient by nurses. It also reduced the nurses’ performance which maybe factor of poor patients’ outcome

Burnout syndrome and related factors among health team employees

BACKGROUND

Burnout is not only related to mental health but also to efficiency. Thus, recognizing effective coping strategies has a significant role in improving mental health, the efficiency and productivity of human resources, and making better the level of quality of service.

OBJECTIVE

To determine burnout syndrome and examine related factors among the employees of Mashhad University of Medical Sciences.

METHOD

This cross-sectional study was conducted among 600 employees at Mashhad University of Medical Sciences. They were selected by a stratified sampling method. The data collection tool was the demographic information and the Burnout Self-Test Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) questionnaire. Data were analyzed through SPSS software version 20, using descriptive statistics and independent samples t-tests, one-way ANOVA, and Pearson and Spearman regression.

RESULTS

The findings showed that emotional exhaustion (EE) and depersonalization (DP) in the majority of employees were high and personal accomplishment (PA) was low at 88.33% of cases. All participants presented burnout. However, participants aged 35-40 years, those with professional and Ph.D. degrees, and research staff reported higher burnout levels.

CONCLUSION

Job burnout and its subscale levels among the employees were high. Job burnout is associated with socioeconomic status that can be affected by individual, organizational, management, and environmental factors. Therefore, this study suggests that employees need to get out of EE and DP conditions for higher job performance. Additionally, further research is required to examine the long-term effects of workplace burnout.

Analysis of occupational stress and its correlation with oxidative-antioxidant levels among employees of a power grid enterprise in Guangdong

BACKGROUND

Occupational stress and its health effects on occupational populations have attracted extensive attention from researchers in public health. The stressors faced by employees of power grid enterprises are increasing progressively, which is easy to cause occupational stress. The balance of the body's oxidative-antioxidant levels plays an essential role in maintaining the body's health status. This study aims to explore occupational stress and its correlation with oxidative-antioxidant levels in employees of a power grid enterprise.

METHODS

A cluster random sampling method was used to investigate the basic information of 528 employees in a power grid enterprise and investigate the two occupational stress models of employees by using the Job Content Questionnaire based on the job demand-control-support (JDC) model, and the Effort-Reward Imbalance Questionnaire based on the effort-reward imbalance (ERI) model, respectively. Peripheral blood samples were collected from the employees to measure the levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and superoxide dismutase (SOD). The correlation between different models of occupational stress level and the body's oxidation-antioxidation level was further explored.

RESULTS

The detection rate of high JDC model occupational stress was 50.6% and the detection rate of high ERI model occupational stress was 50.9%. The JDC model occupational stress was significantly associated with high-temperature and high-altitude operation, visual display terminal operation, monthly income, and exercise (all P < 0.05). The ERI model occupational stress was significantly associated with visual display terminal operation (all P < 0.05). The results of the generalized additive model showed that SOD levels had a non-linear relationship with the D/C ratio as well as the E/R ratio. With the D/C ratio close to 1, SOD levels raised rapidly. When the E/R ratio exceeded 1, the SOD level raised rapidly (all P<0.05) . TAC levels were negatively associated with the E/R ratio (P < 0.05).

CONCLUSION

The detection rates of occupational stress in both models among employees in a power grid enterprise are higher. ERI model occupational stress was associated with body TAC and SOD levels, and JDC model occupational stress was associated with body SOD levels.

The Underexplored Dimensions of Nutritional Hormesis

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

Hormesis is biphasic response wherein low and high doses of chemical and nutrient confer beneficial and toxic effects respectively, typically in a U-shaped manner. Hormesis is intricately related to bioenergetic state of a cell, and therefore, nutrition impacts it. Excessive nutrition can halt the endogenous antioxidant synthesis leading to cytotoxic effects. While low and optimum doses of the same bring about hormetic stimulation that can exalt the antioxidant response and reduce susceptibility towards degenerative diseases. The sirtuin family of proteins is triggered by mild stress of calorie restriction and exerts hormesis. Similarly, several phytochemicals and micronutrients are known to bring about health benefits at optimum dose and deleterious effects at high doses. Despite this attribute, nutritional hormesis is not very well researched upon because the magnitude of hormetic effect observed is generally quite modest. There is no precise regulation of optimal intake of certain foods to witness hormesis and no characterization of any biomarker that reports stress responses at various doses above or below optimal intakes. There is a major gap in research between nutrition and hormesis being affected by sirtuin family of proteins, phytochemicals, and micronutrients.

RECENT FINDINGS

Mild stress of calorie restriction elevates sirtuin protein and effect of sirtuin protein on hormesis has been recently reported. More foods that enhance sirtuin protein, phytochemicals, and micronutrients need to be explored in relation to hormesis and associated health benefits.

Occupational Health Aspects with Special Focus on Physiological Differences between Office and Metalworkers

Physical workload adversely impacts inflammation, oxidative stress and mood in heavy workers. We compared these risk parameters between metalworkers (n = 20) and office workers (n = 30), including gender differences. Blood samples were analyzed with thirty parameters to overview endocrinology, inflammation, and psychological and oxidative stress. Despite an adequate antioxidative supply, oxidative stress occurred in metalworkers, as indicated by significantly increased peroxide and homocysteine (Hcy) levels. Moreover, increased concentrations were observed in this group regarding psychological stress and diet-related parameters. Sex-specific differences were determined for physical dimensions, dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS), Hcy, uric acid, triglycerides, osmolality, anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) and testosterone. Age-associated differences were observed for DHEAS, glycosylated hemoglobin, adrenaline, AMH and testosterone. In male office workers, the body mass index was associated with increased LDL-HDL, cholesterol-HDL and homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR). In conclusion, these results indicate increased oxidative stress and psychological stress in heavy workers independently of adequate antioxidant sustenance. The sedentary occupation of office workers, in turn, favored diseases of affluence. This might be particularly relevant for long-term occupied persons and older workers due to a hormonal shift coming along, given the risk for oxidative stress-related diseases such as cardiovascular disease, particularly in the case of males, based on their lifestyle habits.

Effectiveness of a Training Program Based on Stress Management on NEDSA staff and line Staff

Background

The purpose of present study was to determine the effectiveness of training program based on job stress management in NEDSA and line staff.

Methods

The study method of this study was quantitative and quasi-experimental research Methods: From the statistical population (all employees of the NEDSA and line staff in 2020–2021), 30 of these people were selected by judgmental sampling method and considering the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The participants were first matched based on age and education and were randomly divided into experimental and control groups. First, pre-test was taken from both groups (Job Stress Questionnaire). The experimental group was presented with a job stress management training package and no protocol was presented in the control group. After the sessions, post-test was received from both groups (experimental and control). After two months, a follow-up test was performed.

Results

The results were entered into SPSS-24 software and analyzed. The results of repeated measure showed high effectiveness of the job stress management package (researcher-made). The results showed that the job stress management training package showed 67.5% effectiveness and also the training effect of job stress management training was stable for two months (follow-up).

Conclusion

Based on these results, Training program based on stress management can be effective in military staff.

The contribution of hypochondria resulting from Corona virus on the occupational productivity loss through increased job stress and decreased resilience in the central workshop of an oil refinery: A path analysis

The prevalence of contagious viral-infectious diseases such as COVID19 cause the economic problems in addition to harmful effect on the people health. The present study was aimed to determine the contribution of hypochondria resulting from Corona virus on the occupational productivity loss through increased job stress and decreased resilience in the central workshop of an oil refinery. This cross-sectional study was conducted on 275 subjects in the spring of 2020 in one of the oil and gas industries in southern Iran. To collect the data, the demographic, standard hypochondria, CD-RSC resilience, job stress, productivity questionnaires were sent electronically along with a guide to completing them, as well as study objectives. People were given two weeks to complete the questionnaires and send them electronically to the research team. Participation rate was 80%. Finally, a model based on the defaults was developed in AMOS software and the relationships between the variables were examined. The results showed that corona hypochondria could affect productivity in two ways. In the first place, hypochondria significantly increases job stress, thereby reducing productivity. The indirect effect of hypochondria on productivity in this direction was -0.09. In another way, hypochondria significantly reduces resilience and thus lowers productivity. The effect of hypochondria on productivity was equal to -0.04. Based on the results, the fit of the drawn model was confirmed. The results of the study generally suggested that coronavirus disease has caused the spread of hypochondria mental disorder. Hypochondria could reduce the productivity of workers through two ways of increasing job stress and reducing workers' resilience.
