Growth of microalgae Botryococcus sp. in domestic wastewater and application of statistical analysis for the optimization of flocculation using alum and chitosan

Microalgae-based domestic wastewater treatment: a review of biological aspects, bioremediation potential, and biomass production with biotechnological high-value

This review aims to perform an updated bibliographical survey on the cultivation of microalgae in domestic wastewater with a focus on biotechnological aspects. It was verified that the largest number of researches developed was about cultures in microalgae-bacteria consortium and mixed cultures of microalgae, followed by researches referring to the species Chlorella vulgaris and to the family Scenedesmaceae. According to published studies, these microorganisms are efficient in the biological treatment of domestic wastewater, as well as in the production of high value-added biomass, as they are capable of biosorbing the organic and inorganic compounds present in the culture medium, thus generating cells with high levels of lipids, proteins, and carbohydrates. These compounds are of great importance for different industry sectors, such as pharmaceuticals, food, and also for agriculture and aquaculture. In addition, biomolecules produced by microalgae can be extracted for several biotechnological applications; however, most studies focus on the production of biofuels, with biodiesel being the main one. There are also other emerging applications that still require more in-depth research, such as the use of biomass as a biofertilizer and biostimulant in the production of bioplastic. Therefore, it is concluded that the cultivation of microalgae in domestic wastewater is a sustainable way to promote effluent bioremediation and produce valuable biomass for the biobased industry, contributing to the development of technology for the green economy.

Scenedesmus sp. Harvesting by Using Natural Coagulant after Phycoremediation of Heavy Metals in Different Concentrations of Wet Market Wastewater for Potential Fish Feeds

The high level of organic elements and nutrients in wet market wastewater (WMW) has raised public concerns. The phycoremediation method, which utilizes microalgae, can be further valorized by converting it into various valuable potential bioproducts. The production of Scenedesmus sp. in WMW was investigated as an ingredient for fish feeds in this study. The potential of two natural plant-based coagulants, Cajanus cajan (pigeon pea) and Cicer arietinum (chickpea), for harvesting microalgae Scenedesmus sp. were compared. Statistical analysis and response surface methodology were used to investigate the flocculant dosage and pH effect on harvesting efficiency. It was found that Cajanus cajan (CC) and Cicer arietinum (CA) both had a harvesting efficiency of 89.29% and 88.56%, respectively. The optimal dosage and pH for CC were 178.75 mg/L and 11.72, and for CA, they were 137.77 mg/L and 9.15. This study indicated that Scenedesmus sp. can remove heavy metals cadmium (87.24%), chromium (85.55%), and ferum (90.35%), respectively. The level of heavy metals content (μg/kg in ppb) in dry biomass was found ultimately low and did not exceed the maximum concentration set up by the European Commission Regulation. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) analysis of microalgae biomass displayed O-H, N-H and C-H functional groups. The protein–lipid for the potential application as fish feed in the sample was 45.8–43.6% and 15–13%. Moreover, the biomass contained 53% to 40% oleic acid, which is high concentration of fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). As a result, there is high potential of Scenedesmus sp. in wastewater treatment; both natural coagulants give the possibilities for efficient microalgae biomass recovery as fish feed and are applicable for improving the quality of Scenedesmus sp. cultivated in WMW.

Outdoor phycoremediation and biomass harvesting optimization of microalgae Botryococcus sp. cultivated in food processing wastewater using an enclosed photobioreactor

Microalgae cultivation is well known as a sustainable method for eco-friendly wastewater phycoremediation and valuable biomass production. This study investigates the feasibility and kinetic removal of organic compounds and nutrients from food processing wastewater (FPW) using Botryococcus sp. in an enclosed photobioreactor. Simultaneously, response surface methodology (RSM) via face-centered central composite design (FCCCD) was applied to optimize the effects of alum and chitosan dosage and pH sensitivity on flocculation efficiency. The maximum growth rate of Botryococcus sp. cultivated in FPW was 1.83 mg day^-1with the highest removal of chemical oxygen demand (COD), total organic carbon (TOC), and total phosphorus (TP) after 12 days of phycoremediation of 96.1%, 87.2%, and 35.4%, respectively. A second-order polynomial function fits well with the experimental results. Both coagulant dosage and pH significantly (p < 0.05) affect the flocculation efficiency of Botryococcus sp. biomass cultivated in FPW. The highest flocculation efficiency (92.4%) was obtained at a dosage of 166 mg L^-1and pH 12 for alum coagulant, while 94.9% flocculation efficiency was achieved with optimum chitosan dosage and pH of 30 mg L^-1and 5.54, respectively. In general, Botryococcus sp. shows a great removal efficiency of FPW contamination, whereas RSM provides excellent analysis for biomass harvesting optimization using a flocculation technique.

Optimized preparation of activated carbon from furfural residue using response surface methodology and its application for bisphenol S adsorption

Furfural residue (FR), a solid waste, was applied as the precursor to prepare activated carbon by steam activation. The Box-Behnken design (BBD) approach-based response surface methodology (RSM) was utilized to optimize the preparation conditions to evaluate their effects on the performance of activated carbon from furfural residue (FRAC). The optimum preparation conditions of FRAC were found as follows: activation temperature of 922 °C, activation time of 62 min, and the mass ratio of char to H₂O of 1:4.5, resulting in 1,501.84 mg/g of iodine adsorption capacity and 1,662.41 m²/g of specific surface area. The FRAC was characterized and then the adsorption performance of bisphenol S (BPS) on FRAC was investigated. Langmuir and Koble-Corrigan isotherm models were well fitted to the experimental data, and the adsorption kinetics process was perfectly described by the pseudo-second-order model. Thermodynamic parameters showed that the adsorption of BPS was a spontaneous exothermic process. Besides, the regeneration efficiency of FRAC was over 97% after five consecutive cycles. The maximum monolayer adsorption capacity of FRAC for BPS was 3.2848 mmol/g at 298 K, indicating that the FRAC was an excellent adsorbent for the removal of BPS from aqueous solutions.

Efficient Bioflocculation of Chlorella vulgaris with a Chitosan and Walnut Protein Extract

With the increase in population size, global climate changes, and the improvement of living standards, the fossil fuel resources may run out in the future. Microalgae have been considered the next generation of sustainable and renewable feedstock to produce biofuel and a large spectrum of high-value products, such as healthy oils, carotenoids, and proteins. Unlike terrestrial plants, the production of added-value chemicals from microalgal species is not seasonal; they can be grown under climate-independent conditions in bioreactors; can use wastewater as a source of nutrients, contributing to wastewater treatment; and can convert CO₂ into organic compounds more efficiently. However, the utilization of microalgal biomass is heavily dependent on microalgal biomass harvesting and concentration technology. Flocculation represents a relatively low-cost and efficient approach for the harvesting of microalgal biomass at a large scale. However, in traditional flocculation, most of the chemical flocculants covalently bind to the microalgal surfaces, contaminating the final product, which significantly limits their application. This study aims to develop an efficient and convenient bioflocculation technique to harvest microalgae.

Abstract

Bioflocculation represents an attractive technology for harvesting microalgae with the potential additive effect of flocculants on the production of added-value chemicals. Chitosan, as a cationic polyelectrolyte, is widely used as a non-toxic, biodegradable bioflocculant for many algal species. The high cost of chitosan makes its large-scale application economically challenging, which triggered research on reducing its amount using co-flocculation with other components. In our study, chitosan alone at a concentration 10 mg/L showed up to an 89% flocculation efficiency for Chlorella vulgaris. Walnut protein extract (WPE) alone showed a modest level (up to 40%) of flocculation efficiency. The presence of WPE increased chitosan’s flocculation efficiency up to 98% at a reduced concentration of chitosan (6 mg/L). Assessment of co-flocculation efficiency at a broad region of pH showed the maximum harvesting efficiency at a neutral pH. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, floc size analysis, and microscopy suggested that the dual flocculation with chitosan and walnut protein is a result of the chemical interaction between the components that form a web-like structure, enhancing the bridging and sweeping ability of chitosan. Co-flocculation of chitosan with walnut protein extract, a low-value leftover from walnut oil production, represents an efficient and relatively cheap system for microalgal harvesting.
