Abstract
Hyperuricemia (HUA) has become a significant medical concern due to its complications and links to metabolic syndrome (MetS) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), which result in increased mortality. The pathogenic processes associated with unhealthy behaviors, MetS, and HUA can be cooperative and potentially synergistic in the activation of risk factors. Recent research has shown sex-based differences in the relationship between HUA and its associated risk factors. This study aimed to investigate these differences, particularly in the context of MetS and CVD risk factors and unhealthy lifestyles. We also aimed to evaluate the joint effects of these factors based on sex. We conducted a cross-sectional study using nationally representative survey data from the Korean National Health and Nutritional Examination Survey 2016-2018. We performed multivariable logistic regression analysis, calculating adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with their 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We also conducted subgroup analyses based on sex and the presence of MetS with or without unhealthy lifestyle factors (tobacco use, alcohol intake). We found sex-based differences in the relationships between HUA and MetS, CVD risk factors, and lifestyle behaviors. Our major finding was a significant association between MetS and HUA in both men and women, regardless of alcohol consumption and smoking status, and this association was stronger in women. We also observed a synergistic effect of MetS and lifestyle factors on the risk of HUA, particularly in women, in whom the risk of HUA increased up to four times compared to the reference group. A sex-based clinical strategy for HUA is necessary to reduce related complications and their socio-economic burden.

Abstract
The period between the beginning and the end of the COVID-19 pandemic emergency generated a general state of stress, affecting both the mental state and physical well-being of the general population. Stress is the body's reaction to events or stimuli perceived as potentially harmful or distressing. Particularly when prolonged over time, it can promote the consumption of different psychotropic substances such as alcohol, and thus the genesis of various pathologies. Therefore, our research aimed to evaluate the differences in alcohol consumption in a cohort of 640 video workers who carried out activities in smart working, subjects particularly exposed to stressful situations due to the stringent rules of protection and prevention implemented during the pandemic. Furthermore, based on the results obtained from the administration of the AUDIT-C, we wanted to analyse the different modes of alcohol consumption (low, moderate, high, severe) to understand whether there is a difference in the amount of alcohol consumed that could predispose individuals to health problems. To this end, we administered the AUDIT-C questionnaire in two periods (T0 and T1), coinciding with annual occupational health specialist visits. The results of the present research showed an increase in the number of subjects consuming alcohol (p = 0.0005) and in their AUDIT-C scores (p < 0.0001) over the period considered. A significant decrease in subgroups who drink in a low-risk (p = 0.0049) mode and an increase in those with high (p = 0.00012) and severe risk (p = 0.0002) were also detected. In addition, comparing the male and female populations, it emerged that males have drinking patterns that lead to a higher (p = 0.0067) health risk of experiencing alcohol-related diseases than female drinking patterns. Although this study provides further evidence of the negative impact of the stress generated by the pandemic emergency on alcohol consumption, the influence of many other factors cannot be ruled out. Further research is needed to better understand the relationship between the pandemic and alcohol consumption, including the underlying factors and mechanisms driving changes in drinking behaviour, as well as potential interventions and support strategies to address alcohol-related harm during and after the pandemic.

Abstract
Background Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is caused by both genetic and environmental factors, such as daily calorie intake, smoking, and alcohol consumption. Lifestyle factors, such as alcohol consumption, are considered to be related to the prevalence of MetS and plays an essential role in the pathogenesis and prognosis of depression. Methods We investigated the bidirectional association between lifestyle factors and MetS among Korean adults with depressive symptoms in third wave of a community-based cohort study. A total of 1,578 individuals, aged 39–72 years, who had MetS at baseline were recruited. Participants were divided into two groups according to depressive symptoms. Logistic regression models were used to estimate the risk of MetS. Results The percentage of heavy drinkers was lower in men with depressive symptoms compared to those who did not (7.0% vs. 7.1%), while the percentage of current smokers were higher in participants who had depressive symptoms (40.2% vs. 30.0%). After adjusting for age, education, monthly income, body mass index (BMI), sleep duration, and volume of drinking and smoking status, logistic regression analysis demonstrated that male heavy drinkers with depressive symptoms were 2.75 times more likely to have MetS than those without depressive symptom. Conversely, depressive women with a high BMI were 3.70 times more likely to have MetS than in those with lower BMI. Limitations The cross-sectional nature of the study, and the study population ethnicity and ages were limitations. Conclusions Lifestyle factors, such as alcohol consumption, may be associated with the risk of MetS in adults with depressive symptoms.

Abstract
Insulin resistance can be affected directly or indirectly by smoking. This cross-sectional study aimed at examining the association between smoking patterns and insulin resistance using objective biomarkers. Data from 4043 participants sourced from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, conducted from 2016 to 2018, were examined. Short-term smoking patterns were used to classify participants according to urine levels of 4-(methylnitrosamino)-1-(3-pyridyl)-1-butanol and cotinine as continuous-smokers, past-smokers, current-smokers, and non-smokers. Insulin resistance was calculated using the triglyceride-glucose index from blood samples and was defined as either high or low. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between smoking behavior and insulin resistance. Men and women who were continuous-smokers (men: odds ratio [OR] = 1.74, p = 0.001; women: OR = 2.01, p = 0.001) and past-smokers (men: OR = 1.47, p = 0.033; women: OR = 1.37, p = 0.050) were more likely to have high insulin resistance than their non-smoking counterparts. Long-term smokers (≥ 40 days) are at an increased risk of insulin resistance in short-term smoking patterns. Smoking cessation may protect against insulin resistance. Therefore, first-time smokers should be educated about the health benefits of quitting smoking.

Abstract
CONTEXT Insulin resistance is a determinant of diabetes. With the increasing popularity of electronic smoking, the number of dual smokers (smoking both cigarettes and electronic cigarettes [e-cigarettes]) is increasing. However, few studies have assessed the association between insulin resistance and smoking behavior, including dual smoking. OBJECTIVE This work aims to investigate the association between smoking behaviors and insulin resistance. METHODS This prospective, cross-sectional study took place among the general community. A total of 11 653 participants (4721 male and 6932 female) aged 19 years or older from the 2016 to 2018 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were divided based on their smoking behaviors: dual smokers (both cigarettes and e-cigarettes), single smokers (cigarette smokers), previous smokers, and nonsmokers. Insulin resistance was determined based on the triglyceride-glucose index. Multiple logistic regression analysis was performed to investigate the association between smoking behavior and insulin resistance. RESULTS Among the participants, 205 males (3.9%) and 40 females (0.5%) were dual smokers, and 1581 males (29.9%) and 350 females (4.5%) were single smokers. Male and female smokers (dual and single) both had higher odds of being in a group with higher insulin resistance than nonsmokers (male, dual: OR = 2.19; 95% CI, 1.39-3.44; single: OR = 1.78; 95% CI, 1.43-2.22; female, dual: OR = 2.32; 95% CI, 1.01-5.34; single: OR = 1.76; 95% CI, 1.28-2.42). CONCLUSION This study suggests that single and dual smoking both may increase the risk of insulin resistance in the general population. Education on the adverse effects of smoking behaviors may be an important strategy to improve the health of the population.

Abstract
Electronic cigarette vaping has recently been chosen as a smoking alternative for those who want to quit smoking, but some of the electronic cigarette users use both traditional and electronic cigarettes (dual smoking) without stopping smoking. This study investigated the association between smoking behavior and metabolic syndrome among Korean adults. Data from 14,607 participants (6142 males and 8465 females) were examined. They were divided into four categories: dual smoking (both conventional and e-cigarettes), single smoking (only conventional cigarettes), previously smoking, and non-smoking. Metabolic syndrome risk was calculated as a continuous variable using the lipid accumulation product (LAP) index. Multiple linear regression analyses were performed to examine the association of log-transformed LAP with smoking behavior. Among the total participants, 187 males and 35 females were dual smokers and 1850 males and 372 females were single smokers. LAP was significantly higher in male who practiced dual and single smoking than LAP of non-smokers-dual: β = 0.27, standard error (SE) = 0.06, p < 0.0001; single: β = 0.18, SE = 0.03, p < 0.0001. In female, LAP was significantly higher among those who practiced only single smoking than LAP of non-smokers (β = 0.21, SE = 0.04, p < 0.0001). Dual and single smoking were significantly associated with higher LAP, a strong predictor of metabolic syndrome. Further studies and awareness regarding the adverse effects of dual smoking are required.

Gender Convergence in Alcohol Consumption Patterns: Findings from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2007-2016. Abstract
Gender differences in alcohol use have narrowed over the decades. This study aimed to explore changes in alcohol consumption patterns between 2007 and 2016 to identify gender convergence in alcohol use in Korea. Data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were used. For all respondents (41,662 girls/women and 32,041 boys/men) aged ≥12 years, lifetime drinking, current drinking, age of drinking onset, heavy alcohol use, and binge drinking were analyzed. Gender differences in heavy alcohol use and binge drinking decreased from 2007 to 2016 (p = 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively). The prevalence of heavy alcohol use and binge drinking decreased in boys/men (67.5% to 63.9%, p = 0.001; 63.4% to 60.9%, p = 0.001, respectively), but not in girls/women (50.2% to 50.4%, p = 0.279; 30.6% to 32.0%, p = 0.994, respectively). The proportion of lifetime abstainers decreased among both girls/women (24.3% to 19.1%, p < 0.001) and boys/men (12.1% to 9.7%, p = 0.01). In girls/women, the mean age of drinking onset decreased (from 24.1 to 23.6 years, p = 0.017); however, in boys/men, significant changes were not observed (from 18.9 to 18.7 years, p = 0.307). Healthcare providers should be aware of the growing health risks resulting from increased unhealthy alcohol use in women and develop gender-specific preventive interventions.

Abstract
Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is hitting high notes in the aging society in China. However, the prevalence and associated factors in Chinese aging population lack clarity to some extent. In the present study, we projected to inquire into the prevalence of MetS and its associated factors by analyzing datasets downloaded from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Data comprising age, gender, socioeconomic status, lifestyle and health behaviors as well as blood biomarkers were subjected to descriptive statistics followed by univariate logistic regression and multivariate logistic regression. The overall prevalence of MetS was 33.38% (95% CI 32.42–34.34%). With age augments, prevalence increased during 40–70 years, while declined in participants aged 70 years above. Females had 2.94 times of risks (95% CI 2.55–3.39, P < 0.001). Marital status and alcohol consumption contributed nothing to the suffering of MetS. Participants with GDP per capita > 10,000 RMB and a non-agricultural hukou sustained higher risks than other participants (P < 0.05). Participants under education of middle school suffered 1.16 times of risks than other level of education (95% CI 1.01–1.34, P < 0.05). Smokers, participants with high low-density lipoprotein (LDL) or hyperuricemia or high glycosylated hemoglobin HbA1c sustained increased risks (P < 0.05). In Chinese aging population, with the augment of age, the prevalence ascended in men, while descended in women and was interfered by socioeconomic status, lifestyle and health behaviors as well as blood biomarkers, but not marital status and alcohol consumption.

Abstract
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of health-related behavior changes on the prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS). This study utilized data from the Korea National Health Examination Survey of adults aged 40 or older who underwent health screening in 2011, 2013, and 2015. The prevalence of MetS was analyzed according to sex, age, income, residence location, and health-related behaviors by conducting multiple logistic regression analysis. For health-related behaviors, smoking, drinking, and physical activity were examined, and changes in health-related behaviors over five years from 2011 to 2015 were included in the analysis. The prevalence of MetS in Korea in 2015 was 31.7%. The prevalence showed statistically significant differences according to sex, age, income, location, and health-related behaviors. The prevalence was higher in men than in women and increased with aging. Regarding income, MetS prevalence was slightly higher in the middle-income groups compared with the lowest or the highest. Regarding location, MetS prevalence was lower in metropolitan areas compared to small- to medium-sized cities and farming/fishery rural areas. Regarding health-related behavior, MetS prevalence increased in the smoking, heavy drinking, and passive activity groups compared with the nonsmoking, moderate drinking, and active activity groups. Regarding health-related behavior change, MetS prevalence was higher by 22% in the short-term nonsmoking group (subjects who smoked in the past but not currently) compared to the continuous nonsmoking group. The risk for MetS also increased by 84.9% in the continuous heavy drinking group compared to the continuous moderate drinking group. Finally, the risk for MetS increased by 30.3% in the continuous passive physical activity group compared to the continuous active physical activity group. This study’s findings indicate the importance of maintaining healthy lifestyle habits to prevent MetS. In particular, the focus for change should be concentrated on short-term nonsmoking, continuous heavy drinking, and continuous passive physical activities to improve health-related behaviors.
