Efficiency of a biological aerated filter for the treatment of leachate produced at a landfill receiving non-recyclable waste

Treatment of nanofiltration concentrate of landfill leachate using advanced oxidation processes incorporated with bioaugmentation

Advanced oxidation processes have been broadly applied in wastewater treatment, but few studies have focused on its degradative effect on refractory organic contaminants in membrane concentrates of landfill leachate. In this study, the treatment effects of advanced oxidation processes including electrocoagulation (EC), ozone (OZ), anodic oxidation (AO) and electro-Fenton (EF) incorporated with genetically engineered nitrifying bacteria Rhodococcus erythropolis expressing Nirs and AMO (rRho-NM) on nanofiltration concentrate (NFC) of old landfill leachate were investigated in a lab-scale experiment. The results showed that advanced oxidation processes degraded the refractory organic contaminants including coagulation-resistant substances (CRS), humic acid (HA), fulvic acid (FvA), macro molecular organics (MMOs) and benzene ring compounds (BRCs) and increased the biodegradability in NFC of old landfill leachate. Compared to activated sludge (AS), rRho-NM exhibited an excellent removal performance for total organic carbon (TOC), ammonia nitrogen (NH₄-N), total nitrogen (TN), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) for advanced oxidation processes-treated NFC of old landfill leachate. Advanced oxidation processes incorporated with bioaugmentation demonstrated an outstanding degradation performance for removing refractory organic contaminants, TOC, NH₄-N, TN, BOD, COD and heavy metal in NFC of old landfill leachate. In addition, OZ incorporated with rRho-NM (OZ-rRho-NM) showed the optimal removal efficacy in reduction of refractory organic contaminants, TOC, NH₄-N, TN, BOD and COD, the shortest hydraulic retention time (HRT) and the minimum energy consumption in NFC of landfill leachate. Furthermore, the cheapest treatment cost for NFC could be achieved by EC incorporated with rRho-NM (EC-rRho-NM). More impressively, rRho-NM remained stable in expressing Nirs and AMO genes, increased nitrification and denitrification rate, and improved MBR effluent quality in the treatment of NFC. In conclusion, this work provides new insights into the application of advanced oxidation processes incorporated with bioaugmentation using rRho-NM for the treatment of NFC of old landfill leachate.

Nitrogen Removal from the Simulated Wastewater of Ionic Rare Earth Mining Using a Biological Aerated Filter: Influence of Medium and Carbon Source

In engineering application, a two-stage biological aerated filter (BAF) has been deployed to achieve the steady nitrogen removal of the wastewater from the mining area of ionic rare earth with a low carbon to nitrogen (C/N) ratio. However, the cost-efficiency of the medium and carbon source casts a shadow over further development. In this study, the influences of four media (i.e., volcanic, zeolite, quartz, and ceramisite) and three soluble carbon sources (i.e., acetate, glucose, and methanol) on the N removal were systematically compared. Applying volcanic and quartz showed a favorable start-up performance due to the biophilic surface and dense packing, respectively. However, regardless of medium type, with [NH4+-N]0 = 50 and [NO3−-N]0 = 30 mg/L, the C/N ratio of 3 was required to meet the discharge standards of NH4+-N, TN, and COD, and acetate was confirmed applicable for all the selected medium-packed BAFs. Introduction of sweet potato residues as the solid carbon source decreased the amount of added acetate by more than 13%. The 16S rRNA high-throughput gene sequencing revealed that Sphingomonas and Nitrospira were abundant in the aerobic stages of the volcanic and zeolite-packed BAFs, respectively. Such a community integrated with the extensively distributed Thauera, Clostridium_sensu_stricto, and Proteiniclasticum in the anoxic stage accounted for the efficient N removal. Thus, deploying volcanic as the medium and acetate as the soluble carbon source was proposed. These findings will provide valuable references for the selection of medium and carbon source and, consequently, further optimize the operational performance.

Active green wall plant health tolerance to diesel smoke exposure

Poor air quality is an emerging world-wide problem, with most urban air pollutants arising from vehicular emissions. As such, localized high pollution environments, such as traffic tunnels pose a significant health risk. Phytoremediation, including the use of active (ventilated) green walls or botanical biofilters, is gaining recognition as a potentially effective method for air pollution control. Research to date has tested the capacity of these systems to remove low levels of pollutants from indoor environments. If botanical biofilters are to be used in highly polluted environments, the plants used in these systems must be resilient, however, this idea has received minimal research. Thus, testing was conducted to assess the hardiness of the vegetated component of a botanical biofilter to simulated street level air pollutant exposure. A range of morphological, physiological, and biochemical tests were conducted on 8 common green wall plant species prior to and post 5-week exposure to highly concentrated diesel fuel combustion effluent; as a pilot study to investigate viability in in situ conditions. The results indicated that species within the fig family were the most tolerant species of those assessed. It is likely that species within the fig family can withstand enhanced air pollutant conditions, potentially a result of its leaf morphology and physiology. Other species tested were all moderately tolerant to the pollution treatment. We conclude that most common green wall plant species have the capacity to withstand high pollutant environments, however, extended experimentation is needed to rule out potential long term effects along with potential decreases in filter efficiency from accumulative effects on the substrate.
