Comparing the effects of team-based and problem-based learning strategies in medical education: a systematic review

BACKGROUND

Recently, there has been a concerted effort within medical schools to depart from conventional lecture-based learning approaches to alternative teaching methods such as team-based learning (TBL) and problem-based learning (PBL), with the aim of enhancing both student engagement and instructional efficacy. Despite this shift, a comprehensive review that directly compares the impacts of PBL and TBL methods in medical education is lacking. This study seeks to address this gap by conducting a meta-analysis that compares the effects of TBL and PBL in the context of medical education.

METHODS

Studies from Embase, PubMed, Web of Science, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, and Chinese Wanfang Database were searched, from inception to July 11, 2023. A meta-analysis was performed using Stata 14.0, and a total of 10 studies (including 752 participants) were included. The standardized mean difference (SMD) was used to estimate pooled effects. Heterogeneity was detected using the I2 statistic and further explored using meta-regression analysis.

RESULTS

Compared with PBL, TBL significantly increased the number of theoretical tests (SMD = 0.37, 95% CI: 0.02-0.73). Additionally, TBL greatly improved teamwork skills compared with PBL. However, there were no significant differences between the TBL and PBL groups concerning practical skill scores, learning interest, or understanding skills.

CONCLUSION

TBL in the theoretical aspects of medical education appears to be more effective than PBL in improving theoretical test scores and teamwork skills, providing evidence for the implementation of TBL in medical education.

Comparison of two teaching methods for stopping the bleed: a randomized controlled trial

BACKGROUND

The "Stop the Bleed" (STB) campaign has achieved remarkable results since it was launched in 2016, but there is no report on the teaching of an STB course combined with a trauma patient simulator. This study proposes the "problem-, team-, and evidence-based learning" (PTEBL) teaching method combined with Caesar (a trauma patient simulator) based on the STB course and compares its effect to that of the traditional teaching method among outstanding doctoral candidates training in haemostasis skills.

METHOD

Seventy-eight outstanding doctoral candidate program students in five and eight-year programs were selected as the research subjects and were randomly divided into a control group (traditional teaching method, n = 34) and an experimental group (PTEBL teaching method combined with Caesar, n = 44). Their confidence in their haemostasis skills and willingness to rescue injured victims were investigated before and after the course in both groups.

RESULT

Students' self-confidence in their STB skills and the willingness to rescue improved after the class in both groups. Compared with the control group, students in the experimental group were more confident in compressing with bandages and compressing with a tourniquet after a class (compressing with bandages: control group 3.9 ± 0.8 vs. experimental group 4.3 ± 0.7, P = 0.014; compressing with a tourniquet: control group 3.9 ± 0.4 vs. experimental group 4.5 ± 0.8, P = 0.001) More students in the experimental group than the control group thought that the use of Caesar for scenario simulation could improve learning (control group 55.9% vs. experimental group 81.8%, P = 0.024), and using this mannequin led to higher teacher-student interaction (control group 85.3% vs. experimental group 97.7%, P = 0.042). The overall effectiveness of the teaching was better in the experimental group than in the control group (control group 85.3% vs. experimental group 97.7%, P = 0.042). There was a significant positive correlation between teacher-student interactions and the overall effectiveness of teaching (R = 1.000; 95% CI, 1.000-1.000; P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

The PTEBL teaching method combined with Caesar can effectively improve student mastery of STB skills and overcome the shortcomings of traditional teaching methods, which has some promotional value in the training of outstanding doctoral candidates in STB skills.

Materials extrusion-inspired engineering reflection of social pressure-induced environmental impact on academy community well-being

BACKGROUND

Existing issues with student mental health are the sources of ongoing violation of academic and educational integrity in learning and instructional dynamics in all educational institutions worldwide.

OBJECTIVE

This didactical paper addresses the practical case of educational integrity violations induced by student mental illness. It presents a thought-provoking unified viewpoint of the existence of a non-obvious geometric analogy between the irreversible psycho-social process of mental disorder growth and the irreversible pressure forming-induced deformation process of materials extrusion through an angular domain.

METHODS

This paper uses the method of geometric analogy between the dynamics of social irreversible processes in human society and technical irreversible processes in materials extrusion.

RESULTS

The novel analogy between the loss of elliptical shape of an initial circular material element within pressure-extruded material and the development of student mental inadequacy during intensive university education was firstly studied and analyzed in detail.

CONCLUSIONS

The author-proposed original socio-technical cross-disciplinary analogy improves and broadens student understanding of nonlinear dynamics both in the technical processes of macroscopic rotation formation in pressure-formed material and in the bio-social processes of psycho-neurological pathology development within a learner's mind.
