Abstract
BACKGROUND Effective cancer pain management is essential for improving the quality of life of patients. However, the use of analgesics is often suboptimal due to various patient-related barriers. This study aims to explore the perceptions, knowledge, and attitudes toward analgesic use among cancer patients in Oman, which may influence their pain management strategies. METHODS In a cross-sectional study, we assessed 68 cancer patients undergoing pain management at an inpatient cancer clinic of a tertiary hospital in Oman from a pool of 154 eligible participants. The Barriers Questionnaire (BQ) and the Patient Pain Questionnaire (PPQ), both Arabic versions, were administered to evaluate the patients' barriers to cancer pain management. The study period and the criteria for patient selection are specified. RESULTS With a participation rate of 44.2% and a female-to-male ratio of 2.28:1, the mean score on the BQ was 2.52 (SD 0.84), indicating a moderate level of perceived barriers. Patients' scores suggested notable barriers, with older patients exhibiting reluctance toward analgesics for fear of masking symptoms and female patients expressing greater concerns about developing drug tolerance. CONCLUSION The findings highlight significant attitudinal barriers to effective cancer pain management in Oman, notably a prevalent fear of medication tolerance. The study stresses on the need for targeted patient education and the correction of misconceptions. It also points to the influence of cultural and religious beliefs on patient responses, advocating for the implementation of culturally sensitive, evidence-based pain management guidelines, and the support of multidisciplinary palliative care teams.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Despite a large burden of life-limitingillness, there exists a dearth of services of palliative care in Pakistan. International guidelines have questionable applicability in Pakistan due to the socioeconomic differences. We generated a protocol describing the process of developing comprehensive palliative care guidelines and palliative care referral pathways for primary care practitioners to adopt in Pakistan. METHODS A GRADE-ADOLOPMENT approach with modification has been employed to create guidelines for a Pakistani context. The "National Comprehensive Cancer Network Guidelines Insights: Palliative Care, Version 2.2021" was used as the source guideline. Recommendations from the source guideline were reviewed by two local palliative care specialists to either "Adopt," "Adapt" or "Exclude". The finalized recommendations were incorporated into the local palliative care guideline. Clinical diagnosis and referral pathways were made from the finalized guideline. Any gaps in management found in the pathways were filled by taking existing recommendations from other credible guidelines. RESULTS Twenty-seven recommendations were adopted without modification. No recommendations were deemed to be adapted and 15 were excluded. The referral care pathways created were reflective of the local guideline and included elements of initial assessment, preliminary management, reassessment, and referral. 6 additional recommendations were made. CONCLUSION The described clinical practice guidelines and primary care clinical referral pathways will aid to standardize palliative care provision in Pakistan. These can be used by other resource constrained settings to develop guidelines within their own local context.

Abstract
CONTEXT As Muslim populations in non-Muslim majority nations grow and age, they will increasingly require culturally appropriate healthcare. Delivering such care requires understanding their experiences with, as well as preferences regarding, end-of-life healthcare. OBJECTIVES To examine the experiences, needs, and challenges of Muslim patients and caregivers with end-of-life, hospice, and palliative care. METHODS A systematic literature review using five databases (MEDLINE, Scopus, Web of Science, CINAHL, Cochrane Library) and key terms related to Islam and end-of-life healthcare. Papers were limited to English-language empirical studies of adults in non-Muslim majority nations. After removing duplicates, titles, abstracts, and articles were screened for quality and reviewed by a multidisciplinary team. RESULTS From an initial list of 1867 articles, 29 articles met all inclusion criteria. Most studies focused on end-of-life healthcare not related to palliative or hospice services and examined Muslim patient and caregiver experiences rather than their needs or challenges. Content analysis revealed three themes: (1) the role of family in caregiving as a moral duty and as surrogate communicators; (2) gaps in knowledge among providers related to Muslim needs and gaps in patient/family knowledge about advance care planning; and (3) the influence of Islam on Muslim physicians' perspectives and practices. CONCLUSION There is scant research on Muslim patients' and caregivers' engagement with end-of-life healthcare in non-Muslim majority nations. Existing research documents knowledge gaps impeding both Muslim patient engagement with end-of-life care and the delivery of culturally appropriate healthcare.

Abstract
Human dissection is an ancient pedagogical method that is still relevant in modern anatomy curricula. The body procurement process for dissection purposes has undergone significant evolution from the medieval era until now, whereby body donation has become the main source for human bodies in medical education. The appreciation ceremony for body donors is an excellent way to promote a body donation program, whereby both dissection and appreciation ceremonies are effective in inculcating professional behaviors and altruism among medical students. Despite the benefits of dissection and such ceremonies, conflicting ideas about the acceptability of these methods exist among Muslim scholars and students. Hence, this article provides a theological Islamic interpretation of human dissection, body donation, and appreciation ceremonies from four sources of Islamic law-the Qur'an, Hadith, Idjmaa, and Qiyas-to justify Muslims' involvement in the aforementioned. It is important to note that the fundamentals of Islam are submission to the will of the one and only God, Allah Subhanahu wa ta'ala (SWT) and recognition of Prophet Muhamad (peace be upon him) as the last messenger of God. Therefore, the actions of a Muslim are strongly based on faith and virtue.

Abstract
In the US, end-of-life health care (EOLHC) is often intensive and invasive, and at times may involve care that is inconsistent with patient values. US Muslims may not receive appropriate religious support, experience uncertainty around end-of-life decision-making, and under-utilize palliative and hospice care. As technological advancements and treatment options rise in EOLHC, Muslim American patients and their families need to understand more about the treatment options that are consistent with their beliefs. The objective of this study was to determine the efficacy of a pilot mosque-based educational workshop focused on increasing Muslim Americans' religious bioethics knowledge about end-of-life healthcare. Intervention sites were four mosques with racially and ethnically diverse members, two in the Chicago metropolitan area and two in the Washington, D.C. area. Eligible participants were self-reported Muslims, aged 18 years or older, who were proficient in English. The intervention included a pre and post-test survey and a workshop focused on the Islamic bioethical perspectives on EOLHC. Knowledge was measured with six true-false questions. Baseline and post-intervention scores were analyzed by McNemar's test and bivariate correlation. Overall, the analysis showed a significant improvement in post-intervention participant knowledge. There was increased knowledge of Islamic bioethical views on the moral status of seeking healthcare, brain death controversies, and religious perspectives on withholding or withdrawing life support near the end of life. Our pilot intervention successfully increased participant knowledge and underscores the need to improve the Muslim community's knowledge about the bioethical dimensions of EOLHC.

Abstract
Background Palliative care as a specialist professional practice of care for people with advanced illness is becoming increasingly influential worldwide. This process is affected by global health inequalities as well as cultural dimensions of approaching death and practicing care in life-limiting illness. Objectives The European Research Council-funded Globalizing Palliative Care (ENDofLIFE) project aims to understand how palliative care policies, discourses and practices are translated, adapted and reconstituted in diverse socio-cultural settings and how cultural dimensions of approaching death and local practices of care shape palliative care implementation. Methods and Analysis Using a multi-scalar and multi-sited ethnographic approach, the project uses person-centered ethnography, participant observation, semi-structured interviewing, focus group discussions and policy and discourse analysis at transnational, national and local levels. Ethnographic case-studies are conducted in Brazil, India and Indonesia. Discussion The globalizing palliative care project develops a novel ethnographic methodology of studying end-of-life care trajectories through long-term participant observation with individual patients and families as they manage and practice formal and informal health care in advanced illness. By analyzing how patients and families experience and navigate care over time, complemented by stakeholder interviews, the study advances critical theoretical insight into the relation between (large-scale and dynamically traveling) palliative care models, policies and discourses on the one hand and the experience and practice of palliative care in the lives of patients and informal care givers in local health care practices on the other hand. Insights are expected to benefit culturally situated palliative care policies and practices.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Palliative care in Saudi Arabia has witnessed significant recent progress through the establishment of the Saudi Society for Palliative Care and the National Palliative Care Program. The objective of this study was to assess knowledge and attitudes regarding palliative care and end-of-life decision-making in Saudi Arabia's Eastern and Central provinces among individuals residing in these regions. METHODS Utilizing a cross-sectional survey-based research design, we assessed knowledge and attitudes regarding palliative care and end-of-life decision-making in Saudi Arabia's Eastern and Central provinces. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling via social media. Data collection included demographic information, palliative care knowledge, attitudes toward palliative care, and cultural influences on end-of-life decisions. RESULTS A total of 710 participants completed the survey, resulting in a response rate of 85%, with a balanced gender distribution, predominantly aged 25-54. Over half were healthcare providers, many possessing more than 15 years of healthcare experience. A substantial proportion had received formal palliative care training and had personal involvement in end-of-life decisions. While most participants demonstrated a good understanding of palliative care, knowledge gaps, especially regarding its timing, persisted. Generally, participants felt at ease discussing end-of-life care and believed in palliative care's effectiveness. Cultural influences on end-of-life decisions were perceived both positively and negatively, with some facing cultural challenges in palliative care. CONCLUSIONS This study underscores a promising understanding of palliative care in Saudi Arabia alongside persistent misconceptions. It highlights the necessity for targeted education to rectify misperceptions, particularly concerning the initiation timing of palliative care. Cultural factors strongly impact end-of-life decisions, emphasizing the need for culturally sensitive healthcare discussions and provider training.

Abstract
The current phenomenological-qualitative study explored the meaning of death and dying from a Jordanian-Muslim perspective. Data were collected through face-to-face interviews with eight patients and five family caregivers, then analyzed following the Braun and Clarke steps. The analysis revealed two main themes; confronting death and preparing for a good death. The experience of terminal illness compelled the patients and their family caregivers to think of imminent death and want to prepare for it. On the other hand, Muslim terminally-ill patients accepted death and surrendered to God's decree; however, they feared the unknown of the dying experience. Furthermore, the patients were concerned about being a burden to their families during the last days of their lives. Additionally, Muslim patients and caregivers identified five components of a 'good death' from the Arab-Muslims' perspectives, including having a good closure, dying with dignity, coming to peace, not dying alone, and having a religious engagement.

Abstract
Islam is the fastest-growing religion across the world and in the United States. Adherents of Islam are known as Muslims. Globally, Muslims comprise the second largest religious group with 1.8 billion people, or 24% of the world's population, and range in racial and ethnic diversity.1 As this population continues to grow, palliative care clinicians will invariably care for a Muslim patient therefore making it important to have a basic understanding of values, traditions, and beliefs held by them. This article outlines 10 basic principles held by many Muslim patients and their families that can allow for palliative care to be delivered in a culturally inclusive way. This article should serve as a point of initiation for further exploration of their needs as it is not a comprehensive guide.

Abstract
Palliative care is an important approach for nurses to improve the quality of life of patients holistically and mitigate suffering among the patients in critical condition and near to death. This article provides an Islamic perspective about nurses' roles in palliative care, which can be applied worldwide, especially in Muslim-majority countries. Understanding Islamic beliefs will help nurses provide professional and culturally sensitive nursing care. In its principle, Islam always respects the process of life until death comes. So, the application of Islamic values in palliative care will make the patients accept their ill condition completely, keep being close to Allah SWT (God), and die peacefully. The concepts of illness, death, early action on the dead, and palliative care application in nursing are explained in this article to open up new ideas rather than provide definitive answers. We hope that this perspective will highlight healthcare policymakers the need to integrate Islamic values in nursing practice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Care for people with progressive illness should be person centered and account for their cultural values and spiritual beliefs. There are an estimated 1.7 billion Muslims worldwide, largely living in low-income and middle-income countries. AIMS This study aimed to identify, appraise, and integrate the evidence for the experiences and preferences of Muslim patients and/or families for end-of-life care in Muslim-majority countries. DESIGN Systematic review. DATA SOURCES PsychINFO, MEDLINE, Embase, Global Health, CINAHL, Cochrane Library and Registry of Clinical Trials, PubMed, Applied Social Sciences Index and Abstracts (ASSIA), Social Services Abstracts, Sociological Abstracts, Social Policy & Practice, and Scopus were searched until December 2018. Handsearching was performed, and gray literature was included. Qualitative studies analyzed using thematic analysis and quantitative component provided triangulation. RESULTS The initial search yielded n = 5098 articles, of which n = 30 met the inclusion criteria. A total of 5342 participants (4345 patients; 81.3%) were included; 97.6% had advanced cancer. Most (n = 22) studies were quantitative. Three themes and subthemes from qualitative studies were identified using thematic analysis: selflessness (burden to others and caregiver responsibilities), ambivalence (hope and hopelessness), and strong beliefs in Islam (beliefs in death and afterlife and closeness to Allah). Qualitative studies reported triangulation; demonstrating conflicts in diagnosis disclosure and total pain burden experienced by both patients and families. CONCLUSION Despite the scarce evidence of relatively low quality, the analysis revealed core themes. To achieve palliative care for all in line with the total pain model, beliefs must be identified and understood in relation to decision-making processes and practices.

Abstract
Objective: Ovarian cancer is one of the most common cancers among Malaysian women with high recurrence. Patients with recurrence are prone to emotional distress and are forced to cope with poor prognosis. This study aimed to explore the coping strategies employed by women with recurrent ovarian cancer in Malaysia, a developing multicultural country in Asia. Methods: This was a qualitative study with patients diagnosed with recurrent ovarian cancer and receiving chemotherapy at a hospital gynecologic day-care unit. In-depth individual interviews were conducted with patients to explore how they coped with recurrence of ovarian cancer. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim, and analyzed thematically. Results: The participants' (n = 10) age range was 52–84 years, the three most common ethnic backgrounds were represented (Malay, Chinese, and Indian), and most of the patients were well educated. All patients were on chemotherapy. Six coping strategies were identified: (1) maintaining a mindset of hopefulness, (2) avoidance of information, (3) accepting their condition, (4) seeking spiritual help, (5) relying on family for support, and (6) coping with financial costs. Conclusions: Coping strategies employed during ovarian cancer recurrence in this setting were rarely based on the accurate information appraisal, but rather on the individual emotion and personal beliefs.

Abstract
Background The present study investigated the factor structure of positive aspects of caregiving (PAC) scale among primary informal caregivers providing care to persons with dementia (PWD) in Singapore. Methods 282 primary informal caregivers of PWD were recruited from the Institute of Mental Health, and Changi General Hospital and administered the 9-item PAC scale. A confirmatory factor analyses (CFA) was conducted to test the model fit of the 9-item PAC proposed by the scale developer and multiple linear regression was used to investigate the significant socio-demographic correlates. Results CFA showed that the 2-factor structure including ‘Self-Affirmation’ and ‘Outlook on Life’ had an acceptable model fit. After controlling for confounding variables, Malay caregivers were associated with higher scores on PAC and ‘Self-Affirmation’ compared to caregivers of other ethnicities. Caregivers with Secondary or below education level had higher PAC and ‘Outlook on Life’ scores. Caregivers who had received formal training scored higher in PAC, ‘Self-Affirmation’ and ‘Outlook on Life’. Discussion The present study confirmed that the 2-factor structure of the 9-item PAC was suitable for informal caregivers of PWD in Singapore. The findings have important implications for locally available interventions to enhance caregiver’s psychological well-being and reduce burden of care.

Abstract
Children with poor asthma control have poor health outcomes. In Malaysia, the Malays have the highest asthma prevalence and poorest control compared to other ethnicities. We aimed to explore Malay children with asthma and their parents' perceptions on asthma and its control. We conducted focus group discussions (FGD) using a semi-structured interview guide. Interviews were audio-recorded, transcribed verbatim and analysed thematically. Sixteen children and parents (N = 32) participated. The perception of asthma was based on personal experience, cultural and religious beliefs, and there was mismatch between children and parents. Parents perceived mild symptoms as normal, some had poor practices, raising safety concerns as children were dependent on them for self-management. Conflicting religious opinions on inhaler use during Ramadhan caused confusion in practice. Parents perceived a lack of system support towards asthma care and asthma affected quality of life. Urgent intervention is needed to address misconceptions to improve asthma care in children.

Abstract
How can surgeons deliver compassionate, holistic care to patients who are beyond cure? Interacting emotionally and understanding hope, fear, and spiritual suffering is key. Responsibly reframing hope to underlying meanings, and away from specific outcomes, is critical. Facilitating moves from cure to comfort to a peaceful dying process requires some retooling of the surgical toolbox. Surgeons possess a unique set of skills, including imagination and an undying sense of hope. Surgeons who have the courage to delve into their emotions and sustain realistic hope for their patients, all the way to the end, will reap deep personal and professional rewards.

Abstract
In the context of the Belgian debates on end-of-life care, the views of Muslims remain understudied. The aim of this article is twofold. First, we seek to document the relation between contemporary normative Muslim ideas on assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia on the one hand and real-world views and attitudes of Muslims living in Belgium on the other hand. Second, we aim to identify whether a shift is observable in the views and attitudes regarding active termination of life between first- and second-generation Muslims. We have observed that when dealing with these bioethical issues, both first- and second-generation Muslims adopt a theological line of reasoning similar to the one that can be found in normative Islamic views. We have found an absolute rejection of every act that deliberately terminates life, based upon the unconditional belief in an afterlife and in God's sovereign power over life and death.
