It's not all about power: a systematic review and meta-analysis comparing sex-based differences in kicking biomechanics in soccer

A comparative video analysis of hamstring injuries mechanism and situational pattern in men's and women's football (soccer)

PURPOSE

To describe the injury mechanism and situational patterns of severe (absence >28 days) hamstring muscle injuries in professional male and female football (soccer) players.

METHODS

The data for males were sourced from Serie A clubs participating in both national and international competitions from 2018 to 2021. For the female cohort, hamstring injuries were identified during matches of the top national/international competitions from 2017 to 2023. Video footage was obtained, and three raters categorised injury mechanisms and situational patterns. Injuries were also examined according to the month, minute and location.

RESULTS

A total of 129 severe hamstring injuries were identified, with 64 occurring in females and 65 in males. Video analysis was possible for 29 (45%) female cases and 61 (94%) male cases. Female injuries had longer lay-off times (97.8 ± 77.1 days) than males (39.6 ± 20.9 days). Females had a higher proportion of indirect contact injuries (34%) than males (13%) and a lower proportion of non-contact injuries (66% vs. 87%). Four situational patterns were identified: running was the most common for both sexes, representing 59% of female injuries and 41% of male injuries. Over-stretching injuries were split across open and CKC scenarios but collectively explained nearly half (48%) of male injuries but only one in five (21%) female injuries. Kicking injuries had a higher proportion in females (17%) than males (10%). Injuries were more common in the second half for females and the first half for males.

CONCLUSION

Females had a higher proportion of indirect contact, running and kicking injuries and a lower proportion of non-contact and stretch-type injuries than males. Understanding injury patterns can inform tailored prevention programs, considering sex-specific differences.

One-dimension statistical parametric mapping in lower limb biomechanical analysis: A systematic scoping review

BACKGROUND

Biomechanics significantly impacts sports performance and injury prevention. Traditional methods like discrete point analysis simplify continuous kinetic and kinematic data, while one-dimensional Statistical Parametric Mapping (spm1d) evaluates entire movement curves. Nevertheless, spm1d's application in sports and injury research is limited. As no systematic review exists, we conducted a scoping systematic review, synthesizing the current applications of spm1d across various populations, activities, and injuries. This review concludes by identifying gaps in the literature and suggesting areas for future research.

RESEARCH QUESTION

What research exists using spm1d in sports biomechanics, focusing on the lower limbs, in what populations, and what are the current research gaps?

METHODS

We searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, and ProQuest databases for the following search string: "(((knee) OR (hip)) OR (ankle)) OR (foot) OR (feet) AND (statistical parametric mapping)". English peer-reviewed studies assessing lower limb kinetics or kinematics in different sports or sports-related injuries were included. Reviews, meta-analyses, conference abstracts, and grey literature were excluded.

RESULTS

Our search yielded 165 papers published since 2012. Among these, 112 examined healthy individuals (67 %), and 53 focused on injured populations (33 %). Running (n = 45), cutting (n = 25), and jumping/landing (n = 18) were the most common activities. The predominant injuries were anterior cruciate ligament rupture (n = 21), chronic ankle instability (n = 18), and hip-related pain (n = 9). The main research gaps included the unbalanced populations, underrepresentation of common sports and sport-related injuries, gender inequality, a lack of studies in non-laboratory settings, a lack of studies on varied sports gear, and a lack of reporting standardization.

SIGNIFICANCE

This review spotlights crucial gaps in spm1d research within sports biomechanics. Key issues include a lack of studies beyond laboratory settings, underrepresentation of various sports and injuries, and gender disparities in research populations. Addressing these gaps can significantly enhance the application of spm1d in sports performance, injury analysis, and rehabilitation.

Discriminative validity of summarized hip and knee angular accelerations for lower extremity training load quantification in male soccer players during a standardised training drill

This study assessed the discriminative validity of summarized hip and knee angular accelerations during a standardized training drill. Twenty-eight soccer players performed a standardized training drill that mimics game demands. Discriminative validity was examined by assessment of between-group differences of summarized preferred kicking leg hip and knee angular accelerations, and Playerload between national and regional soccer players for the full training drill, and parts based on locomotor intensity, or additional pass and jumping header activities. Furthermore, relationships were assessed between the summarized hip and knee angular accelerations and conventional load indicators derived from a local positioning measurement system, such as high-intensity running distance and Playerload. National players had higher summarized hip (Mean difference: 62.7 A.U. ES = 0.77, p = 0.049) and knee (Mean difference: 137.1 A.U. ES = 1.06, p = 0.008) angular accelerations. Significant interaction effects were observed during high-intensity running (Hip: 0.2 A.U./m, ES = 0.98, p = 0.005; Knee: 0.61 A.U./m, ES = 1.52, p < 0.001), and sprinting (Hip: 0.3 A.U./m, ES = 1.01, p < 0.02; Knee: 0.56 A.U./m, ES = 1.57, p < 0.001). Between-group differences were not present for additional passing or jumping header activities. Compared to summarized hip and knee angular accelerations, Playerload had less ability to discriminate between players and activities. Moreover, the lower extremity training load indicators were unrelated to conventional load indicators. Together these results confirm discriminative validity of summarized hip and knee angular acceleration training load indicators during a standardised training drill.

Defining movement strategies in soccer instep kicking using the relationship between pelvis and kick leg rotations

Growing evidence suggests skilled ball kickers use distinct pelvis and kick leg strategies to achieve successful performance. However, since the interaction between different strategies remains unexplored, the aims of this study were to a) examine relationships between pelvis and kick leg rotations in male players performing soccer instep kicks and b) classify different 'types' of kickers based on the observed movement strategies. Twenty semi-professional players performed kicks for maximal speed and accuracy, and kick leg and pelvis kinematics were analysed using 3D motion capture (1000 Hz). A strong relationship was found between change in pelvis transverse angular velocity and thigh-knee angular velocity ratio upon ball contact (r = 0.76, p < 0.001), and participants were categorised by their location on kick leg (thigh-knee) and pelvis (maintainer-reverser) continuums. Knowledge of a player's preferred strategy can inform departure from 'one size fits all' technical and conditioning training practices towards more individualised approaches. For example, pelvis maintainer-thigh dominant kickers might benefit from focus towards the concentric capabilities of the hip flexors, whereas reverser-knee dominant kickers might benefit from developing the ability to decelerate the pelvis and thigh to induce motion-dependent angular acceleration of the lower leg towards the ball.
