Abstract
Protein level of Histo-Blood Group ABO System Transferase (BGAT) has been reported to be associated with cardiometabolic diseases. But its effect on pregnancy related outcomes still remains unclear. Here we conducted a two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) study to ascertain the putative causal roles of protein levels of BGAT in pregnancy related outcomes. Cis-acting protein quantitative trait loci (pQTLs) robustly associated with protein level of BGAT (P < 5 ×10-8) were used as instruments to proxy the BGAT protein level (N = 35,559, data from deCODE), with two additional pQTL datasets from Fenland (N = 10,708) and INTERVAL (N = 3301) used as validation exposures. Ten pregnancy related diseases and complications were selected as outcomes. We observed that a higher protein level of BGAT showed a putative causal effect on venous complications and haemorrhoids in pregnancy (VH) (odds ratio [OR]=1.19, 95% confidence interval [95% CI]=1.12-1.27, colocalization probability=91%), which was validated by using pQTLs from Fenland and INTERVAL. The Mendelian randomization results further showed effects of the BGAT protein on gestational hypertension (GH) (OR=0.97, 95% CI=0.96-0.99), despite little colocalization evidence to support it. Sensitivity analyses, including proteome-wide Mendelian randomization of the cis-acting BGAT pQTLs, showed little evidence of horizontal pleiotropy. Correctively, our study prioritised BGAT as a putative causal protein for venous complications and haemorrhoids in pregnancy. Future epidemiology and clinical studies are needed to investigate whether BGAT can be considered as a drug target to prevent adverse pregnancy outcomes.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Some studies show an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus for ABO blood groups. Others find a lower risk or do not identify any association. Inconsistencies may be due to the heterogeneity in the control for confounding variables. We determined the association between ABO blood groups and gestational diabetes mellitus in Mexican women, controlling for gravidity and age, pre-pregnancy body mass index, fasting glucose at the first trimester, and first-degree relative with diabetes. METHODS This case-control study was conducted from February 2019 to December 2021 in Monterrey, Mexico, with 185 cases (women with gestational diabetes mellitus) and 530 controls. ABO blood groups and other variables were obtained from the clinical records. A multivariate binary logistic regression was used for estimating association. Two models were run, one for primigravidae and another for non-primigravidae. A p-value < 0.05 was significant. RESULTS The ABO blood groups were O (69.4%), A (22.2%), B (6.7%), and AB (1.7%), with no differences between cases and controls (p = 0.884). No association was found between ABO blood groups and gestational diabetes mellitus, in primigravidae or non-primigravidae. CONCLUSION ABO blood groups were not associated with an increased risk of gestational diabetes mellitus in Mexican women, independent of gravidity and well-known risk factors.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a condition characterized by high blood sugar levels during pregnancy. The prevalence of GDM is on the rise globally, and this trend is particularly evident in China, which has emerged as a significant issue impacting the well-being of expectant mothers and their fetuses. Identifying and addressing GDM in a timely manner is crucial for maintaining the health of both expectant mothers and their developing fetuses. Therefore, this study aims to establish a risk prediction model for GDM and explore the effects of serum ferritin, blood glucose, and body mass index (BMI) on the occurrence of GDM. AIM To develop a risk prediction model to analyze factors leading to GDM, and evaluate its efficiency for early prevention. METHODS The clinical data of 406 pregnant women who underwent routine prenatal examination in Fujian Maternity and Child Health Hospital from April 2020 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed. According to whether GDM occurred, they were divided into two groups to analyze the related factors affecting GDM. Then, according to the weight of the relevant risk factors, the training set and the verification set were divided at a ratio of 7:3. Subsequently, a risk prediction model was established using logistic regression and random forest models, and the model was evaluated and verified. RESULTS Pre-pregnancy BMI, previous history of GDM or macrosomia, hypertension, hemoglobin (Hb) level, triglyceride level, family history of diabetes, serum ferritin, and fasting blood glucose levels during early pregnancy were de-termined. These factors were found to have a significant impact on the development of GDM (P < 0.05). According to the nomogram model's prediction of GDM in pregnancy, the area under the curve (AUC) was determined to be 0.883 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.846-0.921], and the sensitivity and specificity were 74.1% and 87.6%, respectively. The top five variables in the random forest model for predicting the occurrence of GDM were serum ferritin, fasting blood glucose in early pregnancy, pre-pregnancy BMI, Hb level and triglyceride level. The random forest model achieved an AUC of 0.950 (95%CI: 0.927-0.973), the sensitivity was 84.8%, and the specificity was 91.4%. The Delong test showed that the AUC value of the random forest model was higher than that of the decision tree model (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION The random forest model is superior to the nomogram model in predicting the risk of GDM. This method is helpful for early diagnosis and appropriate intervention of GDM.

Abstract
Objective Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) can occur during pregnancy. One of the leading causes of it is a hormone produced by the placenta that interferes with glucose absorption and causes glucose buildup in the bloodstream. Genetic variations between ethnicities are believed to be associated with GDM, and there has been some research on the association of ABO blood group with GDM in different populations. However, the results so far are inconsistent, and there is no conclusive evidence on how ABO blood group affects the occurrence of GDM. This study aims to examine the link between ABO blood group and GDM in pregnant women at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Methodology A retrospective cohort study was conducted on a group of GDM patients between 2019 and 2022 using data collected from the patients' medical records at King Abdulaziz University Hospital. Results The overall prevalence of GDM was high at 74.7%, and the percentage of patients with A, O, B, and AB blood group who had GDM was 42.9%, 41.41%, 12.1%, and 3.59%, respectively. However, there was no significant difference in Rh status or any other clinical characteristic between the participants who had GDM and those who did not have GDM. Conclusion The present findings indicate that blood group is not associated with the development of GDM in this cohort from Saudi Arabia. However, more studies are required in the future to corroborate these findings.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The susceptibility to type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has been linked to blood type. We aimed to characterize the relationships of the ABO and Rhesus blood groups with T2DM. METHODS Literature searches were performed using the Medline, PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane, EMBASE, and Google Scholar databases to identify studies published up to 31 March 2022. The PRISMA guidelines were used for reporting. Pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were obtained using fixed-effects models. RESULTS Twenty-six studies of 6870 patients with T2DM and 11,879 controls were identified. Compared with the other ABO groups, people with blood type B were at higher risk of T2DM (OR: 1.30, 95% CI: 1.20-1.41), while group O was associated with a lower risk (OR: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.86-0.98). There were no significant associations of T2DM with blood types A or AB, or Rh factor. CONCLUSION Individuals with blood type B are at higher risk of developing T2DM. Therefore, they should be screened for T2DM on a frequent basis and be made aware of the importance of maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise for the prevention of obesity and T2DM. Abstract
Background The association between prenatal pesticide exposures and a higher incidence of small-for-gestational-age (SGA) births has been reported. No prediction model has been developed for SGA neonates in pregnant women exposed to pesticides prior to pregnancy. Methods A retrospective cohort study was conducted using information from the National Free Preconception Health Examination Project between 2010 and 2012. A development set (n = 606) and a validation set (n = 151) of the dataset were split at random. Traditional logistic regression (LR) method and six machine learning classifiers were used to develop prediction models for SGA neonates. The Shapley Additive Explanation (SHAP) model was applied to determine the most influential variables that contributed to the outcome of the prediction. Results 757 neonates in total were analyzed. SGA occurred in 12.9% (n = 98) of cases overall. With an area under the receiver-operating-characteristic curve (AUC) of 0.855 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.752–0.959], the model based on category boosting (CatBoost) algorithm obtained the best performance in the validation set. With the exception of the LR model (AUC: 0.691, 95% CI: 0.554–0.828), all models had good AUCs. Using recursive feature elimination (RFE) approach to perform the feature selection, we included 15 variables in the final model based on CatBoost classifier, achieving the AUC of 0.811 (95% CI: 0.675–0.947). Conclusions Machine learning algorithms can develop satisfactory tools for SGA prediction in mothers exposed to pesticides prior to pregnancy, which might become a tool to predict SGA neonates in the high-risk population.

Abstract
AIMS There are few published data on the putative association between the ABO blood group/rhesus (Rh) factor and the risk of developing gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Our aim was to explore the link between each one factor and GDM development. METHODS All women having given birth at Lille University Medical Center (Lille, France) between August 1st, 2017, and February 28th, 2018, were tested for GDM, using the method recommended in the French national guidelines. The risk of GDM was assessed for each ABO blood group, each Rh phenotype and combinations thereof, using logistic regression models. RESULTS 1194 women had at least one GDM risk factor. The percentage of GDM varied with the ABO group (p=0.013). Relative to group O women, group AB women were more likely to develop GDM (OR = 2.50, 95% CI [1.43 to 4.36], p=0.001). Compared with the Rh-positive O group, only the Rh-positive AB group had an elevated risk of developing GDM (OR = 3.02, 95% CI [1.69 to 5.39], p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS Our results showed that Rh-positive group AB women have a greater risk of GDM. With a view to preventing GDM, at-risk individuals could be identified by considering the ABO blood group phenotype either as a single risk factor or in combination with other risk factors.

Abstract
In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, research indicates that the COVID-19 disease susceptibility varies among individuals depending on their ABO blood groups. Researchers globally commenced investigating potential methods to stratify cases according to prognosis depending on several clinical parameters. Since there is evidence of a link between ABO blood groups and disease susceptibility, it could be argued that there is a link between blood groups and disease manifestation and progression. The current study investigates whether clinical manifestation, laboratory, and imaging findings vary among ABO blood groups of hospitalized confirmed COVID-19 patients.This retrospective cohort study was conducted between March 1, 2020 and March 31, 2021 in King Faisal Specialist Hospital and Research Centre Riyadh and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. Demographic information, clinical information, laboratory findings, and imaging investigations were extracted from the data warehouse for all confirmed COVID-19 patients.A total of 285 admitted patients were included in the study. Of these, 81 (28.4%) were blood group A, 43 (15.1%) were blood group B, 11 (3.9%) were blood group AB, and 150 (52.6%) were blood group O. This was almost consistent with the distribution of blood groups among the Saudi Arabia community. The majority of the study participants (79.6% [n = 227]) were asymptomatic. The upper respiratory tract infection (P = .014) and shortness of breath showed statistically significant differences between the ABO blood group (P = .009). Moreover, the incidence of the symptoms was highly observed in blood group O followed by A then B except for pharyngeal exudate observed in blood group A. The one-way ANOVA test indicated that among the studied hematological parameters, glucose (P = .004), absolute lymphocyte count (P = .001), and IgA (P = .036) showed statistically significant differences between the means of the ABO blood group. The differences in both X-ray and computed tomography scan findings were statistically nonsignificant among the ABO age group. Only 86 (30.3%) patients were admitted to an intensive care unit, and the majority of them were blood groups O 28.7% (n = 43) and A 37.0% (n = 30). However, the differences in complications' outcomes were statistically nonsignificant among the ABO age group.ABO blood groups among hospitalized COVID-19 patients are not associated with clinical, hematological, radiological, and complications abnormality.

Abstract
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a novel respiratory disease that has led to a global pandemic and created a havoc. The COVID-19 disease severity varies among individuals, depending on fluctuating symptoms. Many infectious diseases such as hepatitis B and dengue hemorrhagic fever have been associated with ABO blood groups. The aim of this study was to explore whether ABO blood groups might serve as a risk or a protective factor for COVID-19 infection. Moreover, the symptomatic variations of COVID-19 infection among the individuals with different blood groups were also analyzed. An online questionnaire-based survey was conducted in which 305 partakers were included, who had successfully recovered from coronavirus infection. The ABO blood groups of 1294 healthy individuals were also taken as a control. The results of the current study demonstrated that antibody A containing blood groups (blood group B, p-value: 0.049 and blood group O, p-value: 0.289) had a protective role against COVID-19 infection. The comparison of symptomatic variations among COVID-19-infected subjects showed that blood group O subjects had lower chances of experiencing severe symptoms relating to respiratory distress, while subjects with AB blood group were more prone to develop symptoms, but the differences in both groups were found to be statistically non-significant. In conclusion, subjects who do not have anti-A antibodies in their serum (i.e., subjects with group A and AB) are more likely to be infected with COVID-19. The current data showed that there was no significant association of signs and symptoms variations of COVID-19 infection among individuals with different blood groups.

Abstract
WHAT IS KNOWN AND OBJECTIVE Antituberculosis drug-induced liver injury (ATLI) is a serious adverse drug reaction, and its pathogenic mechanism is still largely unknown. Rifampin (RIF) has been reported to cause haemolysis due to the production of drug-dependent antibodies, and haemolysis results in an increased level of free haem, which affects the function of hepatocytes. Blood group determinants can act as specific receptor sites for drug-antibody complexes, causing erythrocyte destruction in the presence of RIF. RIF-induced immune haemolysis may be a potential mechanism for ATLI. Thus, the study aimed to explore the role of ABO blood group systems in Chinese ATLI patients. METHODS A 1:4 matched case-control study was conducted among 146 ATLI cases and 584 controls. Multivariable conditional logistic regression and Cox proportional regression were used to estimate the association between ABO blood group and risk of ATLI by odds ratio (OR), hazards ratio (HR) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), and liver disease history and taking hepatoprotectant were used as covariates. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Patients in the A, B, AB and non-O blood groups had a significantly higher risk of ATLI than those in the O blood group (OR = 1.832, 95% CI: 1.126-2.983, P = .015; OR = 1.751, 95% CI: 1.044-2.937, P = .034; OR = 2.059, 95% CI: 1.077-3.938, P = .029; OR = 1.822, 95% CI: 1.173-2.831, P = .007, respectively). After considering the time of ALTI occurrence, similar results were found in the A, B, AB and non-O blood groups (HR = 1.676, 95% CI: 1.072-2.620, P = .024; HR = 1.620, 95% CI: 1.016-2.584, P = .043; HR = 2.010, 95% CI: 1.130-3.576, P = .018; HR = 1.701, 95% CI: 1.138-2.542, P = .010, respectively). Furthermore, subgroup analysis also detected a significant association between ABO blood group and ATLI in patients taking RIF (P < .05). However, no significant difference was observed in patients not taking RIF (P > .05). WHAT IS NEW AND CONCLUSION The present study is the first to evaluate the role of ABO blood group systems in Chinese ATLI cases. Based on the present matched case-control study, the ABO blood group may be associated with susceptibility to ATLI in the Chinese antituberculosis population, especially in patients with blood groups A, B and AB who are taking RIF.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes is one of the most common metabolic diseases in humans that cause disruption in glucose and fat metabolism. The determination of the ABO blood group system is hereditary and both diabetes and blood groups have a genetic basis. OBJECTIVES The aim of this study was to investigate the odds of type 2 diabetes for some blood groups. METHODS This case-control study was conducted in hospitals of Kermanshah in 2018. The case group consisted of patients with diabetes admitted to hospital and the control group of nondiabetic patients hospitalized in the surgical ward. Information such as age, sex, BMI, family history of diabetes and blood group is collected and analyzed by the univariate and multivariate logistic regression method. RESULTS A total of 750 patients were enrolled in this study. The number of participants in both groups was 375. The average ages of the participants were 50.51 and 51.62 years, respectively. 67.5% of the patients in the case group were female in comparison with 73.6% of those in the control group. The value of Rh+ in the case and control groups was 94.4 and 93.6%, respectively (p = 0.645). The chance of having diabetes for patients with blood group A was 76% higher than for those with blood group O (p = 0.006). CONCLUSION According to the results of this study, the odds of type 2 diabetes for people in blood group A was higher than for those in other blood groups. It is recommended that blood group A be considered as a risk factor in the screening of type 2 diabetes.
