Abstract
The genus Hippocampus is a multi-origin animal species with high medicinal and healthcare values. About 57 species of Hippocampus spread worldwide, of which about 14 species can be used as medicine, showing anti-oxidation, anti-inflammation, anti-depressant, anti-hypertension, anti-prostatic hyperplasia, antivirus, anti-apoptotic, antifatigue, and so on. And those pharmacological effects are mainly related to their active ingredients, including amino acids, abundant proteins (peptides and oligopeptides), fatty acids, nucleosides, steroids, and other small molecular compounds. The main means of authentication of Hippocampus species are morphological identification, microscopic identification, thin layer chromatography method, fingerprint method and genomics method. This review will provide useful insight for exploration, further study and precise medication of Hippocampus in the future.

Abstract
Food-derived antioxidant peptides have become the focus of research due to their high safety and low cost. However, the discovery is suffering from a low efficient and empirical approach, involving multi-step off-line separation and identification. In this work, an on-line stop-flow RPLC × SEC-MS/DPPH radical scavenging activity analysis system was developed. For optimization, the conditions: 10 m reaction loop, 200 μM DPPH radical concentration, 40℃ temperature and 0.06 % formic acid were recommended. The system was fully validated by its application in glutathione analysis. The system was further applied in analysis of complex mixed standards, and the dipeptides GC (Gly-Cys) and CW (Cys-Trp) with relatively strong DPPH radical scavenging activity were validated. Maize protein hydrolysates were used for tests and the peptide AC (Ala-Cys) of high probability with strong DPPH radical scavenging activity was identified, demonstrating a high potential of the system. This would help to facilitate the discovery of antioxidative peptides in the future.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGY RELEVANCE Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat. (Flos Chrysanthemi, FC) the most economically significant "food and drug dual-use" plants, with positive effects on relieving eye fatigue, and reduce internal heat, shows significant activities, such as anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective, as well as alleviating diabetes effects. AIM OF THE STUDY This study was undertaken to a screening of natural antioxidants in five kinds of medicinal FC and development of an integrated quality control method based on the antioxidant activity. MATERIALS AND METHODS A novel quality control method for FC was established by combining the on-line HPLC-DPPH, ESI-MS, and NIR spectra analysis. Firstly, the on-line HPLC-DPPH-MS system was employed to identify the antioxidants in FC extracts. Then, the relationship between the NIR spectra and antioxidant activities of FC samples was calibrated to evaluate the total antioxidant capacity of FC rapidly. RESULTS The established antioxidant activity-fingerprints contain both chemical information and antioxidant activity characteristics of FC. A total of 16 antioxidants were identified by on-line HPLC-ESI-MS analysis. The results of heat map analysis and cluster analysis showed that the classification method based on antioxidants in FC can be used to identify different cultivars of FC. The optimal pretreatment of the NIR spectra was determined to be row center (RC) 1st der + multiple-scatter correction (MSC) with an optimal LV value of 11. The developed spectral-antioxidant activity model had the excellent predictive ability and was successfully used to evaluate new batches of FC samples, where Rcal = 0.9445 and Rval = 0.8821. CONCLUSIONS This comprehensive strategy may prove to be a powerful technique for the rapid screening, identification, and activity prediction of antioxidants, which could be used for the quality control of FC, and can serve as reference for design of quality control of other herbs and foods samples.

Abstract
Ribes himalense Royle ex Decne, a small shrub, is widely used as a Tibetan medicine in Chinese folk. In this study, three novel 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitors named Rihimaside A, Rihimaside B, and Rihimaside C, as well as one known 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitor, dihydromyricetin, were isolated from the leaves and stems of Ribes himalense Royle ex Decne using online high performance liquid chromatography-1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl activity screening system combined with medium and high-pressure liquid chromatography. All four 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitors are dihydroflavonols. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl scavenging activity and IC50 values of three novel 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl inhibitors were determined using 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl methods. Rihimaside A, Rihimaside B, and Rihimaside C exhibited IC50 values of 9.58 μg/mL, 12.57 μg/mL and 387 μg/mL, respectively.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Seahorses (Hippocampus erectus), belonging to syngnathidae of syngnathiformes, are a traditional Chinese medicine for increasing and balancing vital energy within the body and brain, as well as calming mood and improving sleep. AIM OF THE STUDY Based on the hypothesis of monoamine neurotransmitter deficiency, current antidepressant treatments, with many side effects, are ineffective. Thus, novel hypotheses, inflammation, oxidative stress and neurotrophin dysfunction were proposed. Since seahorses can modulate immune function, reduce oxidants and nourish brain function, it may effectively treat depression. Therefore, this study aimed to detect the predominant chemical characterization of seahorses and investigate the mechanism by which seahorses exert antidepressant effects by using a chronic unpredictable mild stress (CUMS)-induced model of depression. METHODS Control and CUMS-exposed mice were fed normal or seahorse diet (0.018 g seahorses power) for 8-weeks. After behavioral tests, serum corticosterone, hippocampal expression of CD11b, glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and the concentration of interleukin (IL)-1β and monoamine neurotransmitters were measured, while amygdala IL-1β and IL-10, anti-oxidative and oxidative enzyme were also studied. Then main phytoconstituents of seahorses was analyzed using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) methods. RESULTS Compared to controls, sucrose preference, exploration in open field, social interaction, entry numbers into and times spent on the open arms of elevated plus maze were significantly decreased, while immobility times in forced-swimming was increased in CUMS mice. These changes were associated with significantly reduced levels of serotonin, noradrenaline and dopamine, also expressions of GFAP and BDNF. Moreover, CUMS elevated IL-1β concentrations and reactive oxygen species (ROS), while decreased IL-10 concentration and anti-oxidative super oxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase. Seahorse diet significantly reversed anxiety- and depression-like behaviors, which were correlated with reducing IL-1β and ROS, but increasing neurotransmitter concentrations and BDNF expression. Several compounds were found in seahorses, including docosahexaenoic acid, eicosapentaenoic acid, bis(2-ethylheptyl) phthalate, chrysophanol, and hypoxanthine. CONCLUSION Seahorses could attenuate the CUMS-induced anxiety- and depression-like behaviors by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation, and normalizing neurotransmitter and neurotrophin function, which are possibly due to the activities of one or more or mixture of these identified compounds.
