New iridoids from the roots of Valeriana jatamansi Jones

Chemical profiling and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of essential oils extracted with two methods from some North Western Himalayan aromatic crops

Solvent-free hydrodistillation adsorption apparatus (HDA) and normal clevenger hydrodistillation (NC) were applied to obtain Juniperus communis, Valeriana jatamansi and Hedychium spicatum essential oils (EOs). The yields, chemical compositions and α-glucosidase inhibitory activity of the EOs were investigated. Obtained EOs were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC), gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) instruments. Recovery improvement was observed in HDA method (30.4%, 27.3% and 29.0% more recovery of EOs than NC method for V. jatamansi, H. spicatum and J. communis, respectively). Present results demonstrated NCV (V. jatamansi EO (essential oil) by NC method) had highest α-glucosidase inhibitory activity with half-maximal inhibitory concentration (IC₅₀) values of 8.20 μg/mL. As a result, HDA method is considered to be the promising theme for producing EOs with high production recovery. Furthermore, current findings demonstrated that the selected EOs may be a good natural antidiabetic.

A new acylated iridoid and other chemical constituents from Valeriana jatamansi and their biological activities

A new acylated iridoid, valejatadoid H (1), along with fourteen known compounds, were obtained from the n-BuOH extract of the roots and rhizomes of Valeriana jatamansi, and their structures were elucidated by various spectroscopic methods. Among them, compounds 8, 11 and 13 exhibited potent inhibition on NO production, with IC₅₀ values of 4.21, 6.08 and 20.36 μM, respectively. In addition, compounds 14 and 15 showed anti-influenza virus activities, among which compound 14 exhibited significant effect with an IC₅₀ value of 0.99 μM.

Secondary metabolites from Valeriana jatamansi with their anti-inflammatory activity

Valeriana jatamansi is hired as multiple remedies for treatment of insomnia, blood and circulatory disorders, asthma, dry cough, jaundice, seminal weakness, cardiac debility, and skin diseases in Vietnam. Our research discovered the phytochemical investigation of constituents from this herbal medicine resulted in the isolation of two new compounds (jatamansides A (4) and B (7)) together with 16 known ones from the whole plant. Their structures were established by using spectroscopic techniques (multinuclear and multidimensional nuclear magnetic resonance, infrared, ultraviolet-visible), mass spectrometry, hydrolysis analysis, or comparing their NMR data to those reported in the literature. In addition, all the isolates were evaluated for their inhibitory effect against TNF-α production in LPS-stimulated on RAW264.7 cells with significant inhibition.
