Amendment of vanadium-contaminated soil with soil conditioners: A study based on pot experiments with canola plants (Brassica campestris L.)

Effects of willow and Sedum alfredii Hance planting patterns on phytoremediation efficiency under AC electric field

Heavy metal contamination to soil is tricky due to its difficult removal, long retention time, and biomagnified toxicity. The green and low-cost phytoremediation with electric field treatment and planting pattern selection is an emerging and more effective approach to remove heavy metals from soils. In this study, alternating current (AC) electric field-assisted phytoremediation was examined with different planting patterns, i.e., monoculture willow (Salix sp.), monoculture Sedum alfredii Hance, and interplanting of willow and S. alfredii. AC electric field greatly increased phytoremediation efficiency to soil cadmium (Cd) regardless of planting patterns, either single plant species of willow or S. alfredii. The Cd removal capacity of willow and S. alfredii raises apparently under 0.5 V cm-1 AC electric field. Under different planting patterns of AC electric field treatment, Cd accumulation in the whole plant by interplanting was 5.63 times higher than monoculture willow, but only 0.75 times as high as monoculture S. alfredii. The results showed that AC electric field-assisted interplanting of willow and S. alfredii is a promising remediation technique for efficiently clean-up Cd-contaminated soil.

Safe Rice Production in Cd-Contaminated Paddy Soil: Strategy and Environmental Implications

This field study explored safe rice production in Cd-contaminated red paddy soil by application of the combined Si-/Se- containing foliar inhibitors (Si or Se) and the mixture amendments of quicklime (Q), polyacrylamide (A), or/and sepiolite (S) at low (1) and high (2) application rates. The results showed that all treatments increased soil pH and decreased total P and soil organic matter (excluding QSe2). With the increasing application rates, QAS significantly decreased the available Cd because of the enhanced stabilization, while QSi and QSe significantly increased the available Cd because of the inhibited plant uptake. After remediation, QA1, QSi2, and QSe2 most effectively decreased the uptake Cd by rice to meet the threshold of National Food Safety Standard of China. The treatments excluding Q1, QA1, QSi1, and QSi2 did not dramatically change the bacterial community structure in soil. Collectively, QSe2 was recommended for remediating Cd-contaminated red paddy soil.

Vanadium in soil-plant system: Source, fate, toxicity, and bioremediation

Vanadium(V) is an important component of industrial activities, while it may pose toxic hazards to plants, animals, and humans at high levels. Owing to its various uses in numerous industrial processes, high amount of V is released into the soil environment. Previous literature has focused on the biogeochemistry and ecotoxicity of V in soil-plant system. Consequently, this overview presents its source, fate, phyto-uptake, phyto-toxicity, detoxification, and bioremediation based on available data, especially published from 2015 to 2020. Vanadium occurs as various chemical forms (primarily as V(V) and V(IV)) in the soil environment, and its biogeochemical behaviour is easily influenced by soil conditions including redox potential, soil pH, organic matter, and microorganisms. Vanadium mainly accumulates in plant roots with very limited translocation to shoots. However, plants such as dog's tail grass and green bean are reported to accumulate high levels of V in aboveground tissues. An insight into the processes and mechanisms that allow plants to absorb and translocate V in soil-plant system is also stressed in this overview. In plants, low levels of V have beneficial effects on plant growth and development. Nevertheless, excessive V provokes numerous deleterious effects including reducing seed germination, inhibiting root and shoot growth, depressing photosynthesis, interfering with nutrients uptake, inducing overgeneration of ROS, and leading to lipid peroxidation. Mechanisms related to detoxification strategies like sequestration in root system, compartmentation in vacuoles and cell wall, and antioxidant defence systems to endure V-induced toxicity in plants are discussed as well. The detailed knowledge of bioremediation involved in the cleanup of V-contaminated soils would immensely help understand and improve the remediation process. Furthermore, this overview outlines several research gaps requiring further investigation in order to advance our understanding of the biogeochemical roles of V in soil-plant systems.

Review of plant-vanadium physiological interactions, bioaccumulation, and bioremediation of vanadium-contaminated sites

Vanadium is a multivalent redox-sensitive metal that is widely distributed in the environment. Low levels of vanadium elevate plant height, root length, and biomass production due to enhanced chlorophyll biosynthesis, seed germination, essential element uptake, and nitrogen assimilation and utilization. However, high vanadium concentrations disrupt energy metabolism and matter cycling; inhibit key enzymes mediating energy production, protein synthesis, ion transportation, and other important physiological processes; and lead to growth retardation, root and shoot abnormalities, and even death of plants. The threshold level of toxicity is highly plant species-specific, and in most cases, the half maximal effective concentration (EC₅₀) of vanadium for plants grown under hydroponic conditions and in soil varies from 1 to 50 mg/L, and from 18 to 510 mg/kg, respectively. Plants such as Chinese green mustard, chickpea, and bunny cactus could accumulate high concentrations of vanadium in their tissues, and thus are suitable for decontaminating and reclaiming of vanadium-polluted soils on a large scale. Soil pH, organic matter, and the contents of iron and aluminum (hydr)oxides, phosphorus, calcium, and other coexisting elements affect the bioavailability, toxicity, and plant uptake of vanadium. Mediation of these conditions or properties in vanadium-contaminated soils could improve plant tolerance, accumulation, or exclusion, thereby enhancing phytoremediation efficiency. Phytoremediation with the assistance of soil amendments and microorganisms is a promising method for decontamination of vanadium polluted soils.

Effect of physical and chemical properties of vanadium slag from stone coal on the form of vanadium

Vanadium mining and smelting activities were increasing extensively and causing serious vanadium pollution in soil around the mining area. Different existing forms of vanadium had different biological effects and the exchangeable state had been recognized as a severe threat to biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. At present, the research on vanadium morphology had not received much attention. In this study, the area that we researched had been severely polluted with vanadium due to mining and smelting activities. The changes in the morphology of vanadium in soil were studied by adjusting the organic matter content, clay mineral content, pH value, and Eh value. The results showed that at pH 8 and for 1% of humic acid added, the exchangeable fraction of vanadium in the slag was 10% and 9%, respectively, which was 5% and 6% lower than the control group. The addition of kaolin and the redox change had little effect on the exchangeable fraction of vanadium, with a change of only about 2%. To control the soil pollution caused by slag and to repair its ecological characteristics, kaolin and humic acid were used for the repair test. The results showed that after 1% humic acid mixed with 8% kaolin was added in soil, the germination rate of ryegrass reached 95% and grew flourishingly which is significantly better than other treatment groups. Our research can provide a reference for future vanadium pollution control, especially in the morphology of vanadium research.
