Effects of mixotrophic cultivation on antioxidation and lipid accumulation of Chlorella vulgaris in wastewater treatment

Applying mixotrophy strategy to enhance biomass production and nutrient recovery of Chlorella pyrenoidosa from biogas slurry: An assessment of the mixotrophic synergistic effect

Using biogas slurry to cultivate microalgae can simultaneously obtain microalgal biomass and allow nutrient recovery. Mixotrophic microalgae are widely recognized for their high biomass accumulation and low light dependence, making it possible to overcome the drawbacks of photoautotrophy. In this study, three complete metabolic modes of photoautotrophy, heterotrophy, mixotrophy and two incomplete metabolic modes with the addition of diuron and rotenone were applied to investigate Chlorella pyrenoidosa growth in biogas slurry. The results showed that the mixotrophic group obtained 1.15 g/L biomass, 30 % starch content, 99.40 % ammonium removal and 81.69 % total phosphorus removal, which were highly promoted compared to the others. The decline in chlorophyll, the simultaneous downregulation of Rubisco and citrate synthase and the increase in the actual quantum yield of PSII under mixotrophy revealed a synergistic effect: the complementation of photophosphorylation and oxidative phosphorylation greatly contributed to maximizing energy metabolism efficiency and minimizing energy dissipation loss.

Enhancing growth and oil accumulation of a palmitoleic acid-rich Scenedesmus obliquus in mixotrophic cultivation with acetate and its potential for ammonium-containing wastewater purification and biodiesel production

A palmitoleic acid-rich Scenedesmus obliquus strain SXND-02 was isolated from ammonium-containing wastewater. Biomass and lipid production were examined for this microalgal strain in photoautotrophic, heterotrophic, and mixotrophic cultivations, respectively, in order to extend its application in wastewater purification coupled with production of valued bio-products. Among the tested conditions, the microalga had better growth and higher lipid accumulation in mixotrophy. NH₄Cl inhibited the microalgal growth in photoautotrophic cultivation. However, NaAc alleviated this inhibition in both heterotrophy and mixotrophy. Using 7 g L^-1 NaAc and 0.5 g L^-1 NH₄Cl as carbon and nitrogen sources significantly increased the algal biomass and lipid yields under mixotrophic cultivation, with the highest levels up to 1.0 g L^-1 and 59.88%, respectively. Fatty acid profiling indicated that palmitoleic acid was 23% in the S. obliquus SXND-02 under mixotrophic condition, which was about 21-fold higher than that in the control S. obliquus. Furthermore, this microalgal strain was tested in the chicken farm wastewater (CFW) containing high ammonium. Compared with other treatments, the S. obliquus SXND-02 cultivated in the 1/2 CFW + NaAc medium produced larger amounts of biomass (2.18 g L^-1) and lipids (50.22%), and simultaneously higher removal rates of total nitrogen (TN) (80%), total ammonium nitrogen (TAN) (68%), total phosphate (TP) (82%), biological oxygen demand (BOD) (86%) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) (89%) from wastewater. The present data indicate that this excellent microalga can be used in mixotrophic cultivation for wastewater purification coupled with commercial production of valued biomass and high-quality algal oils.

Microalgae as promising source for integrated wastewater treatment and biodiesel production

Microalgae have been studied for their potential of wastewater treatment as well as a promising source for biodiesel production. This study investigates the potential of microalgae to remove nutrients from domestic wastewater (DWW) while producing lipids-rich biomass for biodiesel production. Eight microalgae were cultivated in (DWW) to evaluate their nutrients removal capacity and biomass production. Total phosphorus (TP) of DWW reduced from 2 mg L^-1 to 0.02 mg L^-1 with the treatment efficiency of 99.15% and the highest performance was noted in Chlamydomonas reinhardtii (C. reinhardtii). For total nitrogen (TN), treatment efficiency climbed to 99.07%. It is reduced from 18.35 to 0.17 mg L^-1 recorded in C. reinhardtii and Chlorella pyrenoidosa (C. pyrenoidosa). On the other hand, all microalgae showed a high lipids-rich biomass in wastewater compared to BG11. The highest lipid content was 36.93% noted in Chlorella sorokiniana (C. sorokiniana). Fatty acids methyl ester (FAME) profiles showed a high content of palmitic C16:0, oleic C18:1 and stearic acids C18:0 in studied microalgae strains. In summary, microalgae envisage its potential application in integrated wastewater treatment and biodiesel production. In perspective, the authors focus on the validation of this bioprocess in pilot scale. Furthermore, the use of microalgae for other applications such CO₂ biosequestration and added value products. Novelty statement: The present study investigates the potential of Moroccan microalgae as candidates to wastewater remediation and high biomass production with high lipid rate for biodiesel production.
