Synergistic effect in concurrent removal of toxic methylene blue and acid red-1 dyes from aqueous solution by durian rind: kinetics, isotherm, thermodynamics, and mechanism

Assessment of chromite ore wastes for methylene blue adsorption: Isotherm, kinetic, thermodynamic studies, ANN, and statistical physics modeling

This research investigates the adsorption potential of chrysotile and lizardite, two minerals derived from chromite ore wastes, for the uptake of Methylene Blue (MB) dye from waste streams. The characterization of these minerals involves XRD, XRF, FTIR, and SEM. Results confirm the dominance of polymorphic magnesium silicate minerals, specifically chrysotile and lizardite, in the samples. The FTIR spectra reveal characteristic vibration bands confirming the presence of these minerals. The SEM analysis depicts irregular surfaces with broken and bent edges, suggesting favorable morphologies for adsorption. N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms indicate mesoporous structures with Type IV pores in both adsorbents. The Central Composite Design approach is employed to optimize MB adsorption conditions, revealing the significance of contact time, adsorbent mass, and initial MB concentration. The proposed models exhibit high significance, with F-values and low p-values indicating the importance of the studied factors. Experimental validation confirms the accuracy of the models, and the optimum conditions for MB adsorption are determined. The influence of solution acidity on MB uptake is investigated, showing a significant enhancement at higher pH values. Isothermal studies indicate Langmuir and Freundlich models as suitable descriptions for MB adsorption onto chrysotile and lizardite. The maximum adsorption capacities of MB for chrysotile and lizardite were found to be 352.97 and 254.85, respectively. Kinetic studies reveal that the pseudo-first-order model best describes the adsorption process. Thermodynamic analysis suggests an exothermic and spontaneous process. Statistical physics models further elucidate the monolayer nature of adsorption. Additionally, an artificial neural network is developed, exhibiting high predictive capability during training and testing stages. The reusability of chrysotile and lizardite is demonstrated through multiple regeneration cycles, maintaining substantial adsorption potential. Therefore, this research provides comprehensive insights into the adsorption characteristics of chrysotile and lizardite, emphasizing their potential as effiective and reusable sorbents for MB uptake from wastewater.

Comparison of pesticide adsorption efficiencies of zeolites and zeolite-carbon composites and their regeneration possibilities

The presence of pesticides in our environment is a consequence of intensive industrial and civilizational development, necessitating the search for effective and safe methods to remove them. We suggest utilizing zeolite X and a zeolite-carbon composite, obtained through the chemical transformation of fly ash, as pesticide sorbents. To increase the sorption efficiency of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), 2-methyl-4-chlorophenoxyacetic acid (MCPA), carbendazim, and simazine, we functionalized the zeolite materials with cationic (hexadecyltrimethylammonium) and nonionic (Triton X-100) surfactants. We used transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), thermogravimetric/differential thermal analysis (TG/DTA) and point of zero charge (pHpzc) analysis to characterize the functionalized sorbent materials. Our results indicate that cationic surfactants significantly enhance the adsorption of 2,4-D and MCPA. In contrast, carbendazim and simazine exhibit maximum sorption on the unmodified zeolite-carbon composite. The sorption mechanism is intricate, with physical sorption predominating, primarily due to electrostatic interactions between the protonated binding sites of the adsorbents and the negatively charged pesticide molecules. Regeneration tests demonstrated that ethanol is the most effective in regenerating zeolite-carbon composite with adsorbed MCPA and 2,4-D, while thermal regeneration was not possible. Adsorbents with simazine and carbendazim can be regenerated using both thermal and ethanol methods, but the thermal regeneration of zeolite with adsorbed simazine is more efficient. Utilizing functionalized zeolite materials obtained from industrial waste, such as fly ash, could provide an efficient way to remove pesticides from the environment.

Box-Behnken design with desirability function for methylene blue dye adsorption by microporous activated carbon from pomegranate peel using microwave assisted K2CO3 activation

This research aims to convert pomegranate peel (PP) into microporous activated carbon (PPAC) using a microwave assisted K2CO3 activation method. The optimum activation conditions were carried out with a 1:2 PP/K2CO3 impregnation ratio, radiation power 800 W, and 15 min irradiation time. The statistical Box-Behnken design (BBD) was employed as an effective tool for optimizing the factors that influence the adsorption performance and removal of methylene blue (MB) dye. The output data of BBD with a desirability function indicate a 94.8% removal of 100 mg/L MB at the following experimental conditions: PPAC dose of 0.08 g, solution pH of 7.45, process temperature of 32.1 °C, and a time of 30 min. The pseudo-second order (PSO) kinetic model accounted for the contact time for the adsorption of MB. At equilibrium conditions, the Freundlich adsorption isotherm describes the adsorption results, where the maximum adsorption capacity of PPAC for MB dye was 291.5 mg g-1. This study supports the utilization of biomass waste from pomegranate peels and conversion into renewable and sustainable adsorbent materials. As well, this work contributes to the management of waste biomass and water pollutant sequestration.

Hydrolysis, Biodegradation and Ion Sorption in Binary Biocomposites of Chitosan with Polyesters: Polylactide and Poly(3-Hydroxybutyrate)

The film binary composites polylactide (PLA)-chitosan and poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB)-chitosan have been fabricated and their functional characteristics, such as hydrolysis resistance, biodegradation in soil, and ion sorption behavior have been explored. It was established that hydrolysis temperature and acidity of solutions are differently affected by the weight loss of these two systems. Thus, in the HCl aqueous solutions, the stability of the PHB-chitosan composites is higher than the stability of the PLA-chitosan one, while the opposite situation was observed for biodegradation in soil. The sorption capacity of both composites to Fe³⁺ ions was investigated and it was shown that, for PHB-chitosan composites, the sorption is higher than for PLA-chitosan. It was established that kinetics of sorption obeys the pseudo-first-order equation and limiting values of sorption correspond to Henry's Law formalism. By scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the comparative investigation of initial films and films containing sorbed ions was made and the change of films surface after Fe³⁺ sorption is demonstrated. The findings presented could open a new horizon in the implementation of novel functional biodegradable composites.

Dynamics of Diffusion- and Immobilization-Limited Photocatalytic Degradation of Dyes by Metal Oxide Nanoparticles in Binary or Ternary Solutions

Photocatalytic degradation employing metal oxides, such as TiO2 nanoparticles, as catalysts is an important technique for the removal of synthetic dyes from wastewater under light irradiation. The basic principles of photocatalysis of dyes, the effects of the intrinsic photoactivity of a catalyst, and the conventional non-fundamental factors are well established. Recently reported photocatalysis studies of dyes in single, binary, and ternary solute solutions opened up a new perspective on competitive photocatalytic degradation of the dyes. There has not been a review on the photocatalytic behavior of binary or ternary solutions of dyes. In this regard, this current review article summarizes the photocatalytic behavior of methylene, rhodamine B, and methyl orange in their binary or ternary solutions. This brief overview introduces the importance of the dynamics of immobilization and reactivity of the dyes, the vital roles of molecular conformation and functional groups on their diffusion onto the catalyst surface, and photocatalytic degradation, and provides an understanding of the simultaneous photocatalytic processes of multiple dyes in aqueous systems.

Dynamics and thermodynamics for competitive adsorptive removal of methylene blue and rhodamine B from binary aqueous solution onto durian rind

Concurrent adsorptive removal of methylene blue (MB) and rhodamine B (RhB) onto durian rind (DR) agricultural waste, from an aqueous binary solution as a model of wastewater containing multiple synthetic dyes, was investigated. The concurrent adsorption of the dyes followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The adsorption isotherm was well simulated by the Langmuir model, implying a monolayer adsorption to the surface with a homogeneous binding energy. The adsorption process was governed by external mass transfer through two-step intraparticle diffusion of the dyes onto the adsorbent surface. The adsorption efficiency of MB (96.4%) is much higher than that of RhB (56.3%). This is attributed to the higher rate constant for the adsorption of MB (0.348 g mg^-1 min^-1) as compared to that of RhB (0.151 g mg^-1 min^-1). The adsorption behavior suggested that the two cationic dyes in the binary solution diffused and adsorbed independently and randomly onto the DR surface. The adsorption capacity of MB and RhB in the binary solution (47.4 mg g^-1 and 32.9 mg g^-1, respectively) is lower than those of their single solute solutions (93.3 mg g^-1 and 62.8 mg g^-1, respectively), suggesting a competitive effect in their concurrent adsorption. This was confirmed based on the adsorption characteristics of the binary solution with different molar ratios. The competitive effect was attributed to either non-interactive or repulsive electrostatic interactions between the positively charged dyes in the binary system. The domination of MB is attributed to its smaller molecular size, higher planarity, and faster adsorption kinetics compared with RhB.

Adsorption Behavior and Dynamic Interactions of Anionic Acid Blue 25 on Agricultural Waste

In this study, adsorption characteristics of a negatively charged dye, Acid Blue 25 (AB25), on pomelo pith (PP) was studied by varying the adsorption parameters, with the aim of evaluating the adsorption mechanism and establishing the role of hydrogen bonding interactions of AB25 on agricultural wastes. The kinetics, intraparticle diffusion, mechanism, and thermodynamics of the AB25 adsorption were systematically evaluated and analyzed by pseudo-first-order and pseudo-second-order kinetic models, the Weber–Morris intraparticle and Boyd mass transfer models, the Langmuir, Freundlich, Dubinin–Radushkevich, and Temkin isotherm models, and the Van’t Hoff equation. It was found that AB25 adsorption followed pseudo-second-order kinetics, governed by a two-step pore-volume intraparticle diffusion of external mass transfer of AB25 onto the PP surface. The adsorption process occurred spontaneously. The adsorption mechanism could be explained by the Langmuir isotherm model, and the maximum adsorption capacity was estimated to be 26.9 mg g−1, which is comparable to many reported adsorbents derived from agricultural wastes. Changes in the vibrational spectra of the adsorbent before and after dye adsorption suggested that AB25 molecules are bound to the PP surface via electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions. The results demonstrated that the use of pomelo pith, similar to other agricultural wastes, would provide a basis to design a simple energy-saving, sustainable, and cost-effective approach to remove negatively charged synthetic dyes from wastewater.
