RECENT DEVELOPMENTS IN FERROELECTRIC POLYMERS

Hydrogen Bonding-Assisted Complete Ferroelectric β-Phase Conversion in Poly(vinylidene fluoride) Thin Films: Exhibiting an Excellent Memory Window and Long Retention

Organic nonvolatile memory with low power consumption is a critical research demand for next-generation memory applications. Ferroelectric switching characteristics of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) thin films modified with a trace amount of hydrated Cu salt (CuCl2·2H2O) are explored in the present study. Herein, a Cu salt-mediated PVDF (Cu/PVDF) thin film with preferential edge-on β-crystallites is fabricated through the orientation-controlled spin coating (OCSC) technique. This work proposes a convenient and effective approach to produce edge-on-oriented electroactive PVDF thin films with a high degree of polar β-phase, so as to realize the favorable switching under low operating voltages. Herein, chemically modified PVDF is anticipated to form a complex intermediate, which attains its stability by undergoing favorable hydrogen bonding that reorients the C-C structure of PVDF to obtain the β-conformation. Such information is verified by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Grazing incidence Fourier transform infrared (GI-FTIR) spectroscopy revealed that the Cu salt incorporated into the PVDF matrix favored the formation of the electroactive β-phase with edge-on crystallite lamellae. Consequently, the Cu/PVDF thin film demonstrates a good contrast between electric field-assisted written and erased data bits in the piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) phase image. Furthermore, to obtain the ferroelectric memory window, a metal-ferroelectric-insulator-semiconductor (MFIS) diode with Cu/PVDF as a ferroelectric layer has been fabricated. The capacitance-voltage (C-V) characteristic of the MFIS diode exhibits a memory window of 12 V with a long-term retention behavior (∼longer than 7 days). In a nutshell, we tried to represent a clear understanding of the interfacial interactions of the Cu salt with PVDF, which favor the edge-on formation that results in the promising low-voltage ferroelectric switching and excellent retention response, where any additional electrical poling and/or external stretching is completely possible to be ruled out, thus offering a new prospect for the evolution of devices with long-lasting nonvolatile memories.

Solvent-Free Design of Biobased Non-isocyanate Polyurethanes with Ferroelectric Properties

Increasing energy autonomy and lowering dependence on lithium-based batteries are more and more appealing to meet our current and future needs of energy-demanding applications such as data acquisition, storage, and communication. In this respect, energy harvesting solutions from ambient sources represent a relevant solution by unravelling these challenges and giving access to an unlimited source of portable/renewable energy. Despite more than five decades of intensive study, most of these energy harvesting solutions are exclusively designed from ferroelectric ceramics such as Pb(Zr,Ti)O3 and/or ferroelectric polymers such as polyvinylidene fluoride and its related copolymers, but the large implementation of these piezoelectric materials into these technologies is environmentally problematic, related with elevated toxicity and poor recyclability. In this work, we reveal that fully biobased non-isocyanate polyurethane-based materials could afford a sustainable platform to produce piezoelectric materials of high interest. Interestingly, these non-isocyanate polyurethanes (NIPUs) with ferroelectric properties could be successfully synthesized using a solvent-free reactive extrusion process on the basis of an aminolysis reaction between resorcinol bis-carbonate and different diamine extension agents. Structure-property relationships were established, indicating that the ferroelectric behavior of these NIPUs depends on the nanophase separation inside these materials. These promising results indicate a significant potential for fulfilling the requirements of basic connected sensors equipped with low-power communication technologies.

Powering Implantable and Ingestible Electronics

Implantable and ingestible biomedical electronic devices can be useful tools for detecting physiological and pathophysiological signals, and providing treatments that cannot be done externally. However, one major challenge in the development of these devices is the limited lifetime of their power sources. The state-of-the-art of powering technologies for implantable and ingestible electronics is reviewed here. The structure and power requirements of implantable and ingestible biomedical electronics are described to guide the development of powering technologies. These powering technologies include novel batteries that can be used as both power sources and for energy storage, devices that can harvest energy from the human body, and devices that can receive and operate with energy transferred from exogenous sources. Furthermore, potential sources of mechanical, chemical, and electromagnetic energy present around common target locations of implantable and ingestible electronics are thoroughly analyzed; energy harvesting and transfer methods befitting each energy source are also discussed. Developing power sources that are safe, compact, and have high volumetric energy densities is essential for realizing long-term in-body biomedical electronics and for enabling a new era of personalized healthcare.

Ultrafine PVDF Nanofibers for Filtration of Air-Borne Particulate Matters: A Comprehensive Review

The ongoing global pandemic has bestowed high priority uponthe separation of air-borne particulate matters (PMs), aerosols, etc. using nonwoven fibrous materials, especially for face masks as a means of personal protection. Although spunbond or meltblown nonwoven materials are amongst the forerunners for polymer microfiber-based face mask or air filter development in mass scale, relatively new process of nonwoven manufacturing such as electrospinning is gaining a lot of momentum amongst the filter membrane manufacturers for its scalability of nanofiber-based filter membrane fabrication. There are several nanofiber-based face masks developing industries, which claim a very high efficiency in filtration of particulate matters (PM0.1-10) as well as other aerosols for their products. Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), which is commonly known for its use of tactile sensors and energy harvesters, due to its piezoelectric property, is slowly gaining popularity among researchers and developers as an air filter material. Electrospun PVDF nanofibers can be as fine as 50 nm in mass scale, which allows the membrane to have large surface area compared to its volume, enhancing nanofiber-PM interaction. At the same time, the breathability index can be improved through these PVDF nanofiber membranes due to their architectural uniqueness that promotes slip flow around the fibers. The conductive nature of PVDF makes it advantageous as a promising electret filter allowing better capturing of ultrafine particles. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of such PVDF nanofiber-based filter membranes and their roles in air filtration, especially its application in filtrate of air-borne PMs.

A review of molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) based photodetectors: from ultra-broadband, self-powered to flexible devices

Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (2D TMDs) have attracted much attention in the field of optoelectronics due to their tunable bandgaps, strong interaction with light and tremendous capability for developing diverse van der Waals heterostructures (vdWHs) with other materials. Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) atomic layers which exhibit high carrier mobility and optical transparency are very suitable for developing ultra-broadband photodetectors to be used from surveillance and healthcare to optical communication. This review provides a brief introduction to TMD-based photodetectors, exclusively focused on MoS2-based photodetectors. The current research advances show that the photoresponse of atomic layered MoS2 can be significantly improved by boosting its charge carrier mobility and incident light absorption via forming MoS2 based plasmonic nanostructures, halide perovskites-MoS2 heterostructures, 2D-0D MoS2/quantum dots (QDs) and 2D-2D MoS2 hybrid vdWHs, chemical doping, and surface functionalization of MoS2 atomic layers. By utilizing these different integration strategies, MoS2 hybrid heterostructure-based photodetectors exhibited remarkably high photoresponsivity raging from mA W-1 up to 1010 A W-1, detectivity from 107 to 1015 Jones and a photoresponse time from seconds (s) to nanoseconds (10-9 s), varying by several orders of magnitude from deep-ultraviolet (DUV) to the long-wavelength infrared (LWIR) region. The flexible photodetectors developed from MoS2-based hybrid heterostructures with graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), TMDs, and ZnO are also discussed. In addition, strain-induced and self-powered MoS2 based photodetectors have also been summarized. The factors affecting the figure of merit of a very wide range of MoS2-based photodetectors have been analyzed in terms of their photoresponsivity, detectivity, response speed, and quantum efficiency along with their measurement wavelengths and incident laser power densities. Conclusions and the future direction are also outlined on the development of MoS2 and other 2D TMD-based photodetectors.

The effects of additions of two-dimensional graphitic-C3N4 on the negative electro-caloric effects in P(VDF-TrFE) copolymers

In order to enhance and tune the electrocaloric effect (ECE) and ferroelectric responses, nanocomposites containing ferroelectric copolymer poly(vinylidene fluoride trifluoroethylene) and two-dimensional (2D) graphitic-C3N4 (g-C3N4) are synthesized. The effects of g-C3N4 on the ferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition of the copolymer are investigated by the differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), P-E hysteresis loop and dielectric spectrum measurements. The results indicate that the addition of 2D g-C3N4 in the ferroelectric copolymer is an effective approach in enhancing its dielectric and ferroelectric properties. Furthermore, the nanocomposites show the maximum absolute value of negative electrocaloric effect (ECE) of 5.4 K at 322 K under an electric field of 0.45 MV cm-1, which is much better than that of pristine copolymer. The negative ECE of the nanocomposites can be well explained by the Kauzmann theory. The low cost and enhanced negative ferroelectric properties of P(VDF-TrFE) make them more feasible over ceramics materials such as lead zirconate titanate (PZT) based ferroelectrics for applications in electrocaloric refrigeration.

Flexible Molybdenum Disulfide (MoS2) Atomic Layers for Wearable Electronics and Optoelectronics

Flexible, stretchable, and bendable materials, including inorganic semiconductors, organic polymers, graphene, and transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs), are attracting great attention in such areas as wearable electronics, biomedical technologies, foldable displays, and wearable point-of-care biosensors for healthcare. Among a broad range of layered TMDs, atomically thin layered molybdenum disulfide (MoS₂) has been of particular interest, due to its exceptional electronic properties, including tunable bandgap and charge carrier mobility. MoS₂ atomic layers can be used as a channel or a gate dielectric for fabricating atomically thin field-effect transistors (FETs) for electronic and optoelectronic devices. This review briefly introduces the processing and spectroscopic characterization of large-area MoS₂ atomically thin layers. The review summarizes the different strategies in enhancing the charge carrier mobility and switching speed of MoS₂ FETs by integrating high-κ dielectrics, encapsulating layers, and other 2D van der Waals layered materials into flexible MoS₂ device structures. The photoluminescence (PL) of MoS₂ atomic layers has, after chemical treatment, been dramatically improved to near-unity quantum yield. Ultraflexible and wearable active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AM-OLED) displays and wafer-scale flexible resistive random-access memory (RRAM) arrays have been assembled using flexible MoS₂ transistors. The review discusses the overall recent progress made in developing MoS₂ based flexible FETs, OLED displays, nonvolatile memory (NVM) devices, piezoelectric nanogenerators (PNGs), and sensors for wearable electronic and optoelectronic devices. Finally, it outlines the perspectives and tremendous opportunities offered by a large family of atomically thin-layered TMDs.

Electrical and room temperature multiferroic properties of polyvinylidene fluoride nanocomposites doped with nickel ferrite nanoparticles

The higher values of magneto-dielectric coupling is observed in flexible multiferroic polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) nanocomposites doped with nickel ferrite (NFO) nanoparticles.

Enhanced electroactive and mechanical properties of poly(vinylidene fluoride) by controlling crystallization and interfacial interactions with low loading polydopamine coated BaTiO₃

Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) is a semi-crystalline polymer and the polar β-phase of PVDF shows superb electroactive properties. In order to enhance the β-phase of PVDF, extreme low content of BaTiO3 nanoparticles (BT-NPs) coated with polydopamine (Pdop) were incorporated into PVDF matrix by solution casting. The β-phase of the resulting PVDF nanocomposites film was dramatically increased and the d33 value reached 34.3±0.4 pCN(-1). It is found that the Pdop layer could improve the dispersibility and stability of the BT NPs in solution and endow the BT NPs good dispersity in the PVDF matrix. Moreover, the interfacial interaction between PVDF chains and the surface of BT-Pdop nanoparticles (BT-Pdop NPs) were revealed, in which the CF2 groups on PVDF could interact with the electron-rich plane of aromatic ring of Pdop moiety. This interaction, led to the increase of the crystallization activation energy as derived from the DSC nonisothermal crystallization measurement. The α-β crystal transformation, organization of interfacial interactions as well as the prevention of agglomeration of BT-NPs confer the improvement of mechanical and thermal properties of PVDF, such as toughness, tensile strength, elongation at break, and thermal conductivity.

Hot plate annealing at a low temperature of a thin ferroelectric P(VDF-TrFE) film with an improved crystalline structure for sensors and actuators

Ferroelectric poly(vinylidene fluoride-trifluoroethylene) (P(VDF-TrFE)) copolymer 70/30 thin films are prepared by spin coating. The crystalline structure of these films is investigated by varying the annealing temperature from the ferroelectric phase to the paraelectric phase. A hot plate was used to produce a direct and an efficient annealing effect on the thin film. The dielectric, ferroelectric and pyroelectric properties of the P(VDF-TrFE) thin films are measured as a function of different annealing temperatures (80 to 140 °C). It was found that an annealing temperature of 100 °C (slightly above the Curie temperature, Tc) has induced a highly crystalline β phase with a rod-like crystal structure, as examined by X-ray. Such a crystal structure yields a high remanent polarization, P_r = 94 mC/m², and pyroelectric constant, p = 24 μC/m²K. A higher annealing temperature exhibits an elongated needle-like crystal domain, resulting in a decrease in the crystalline structure and the functional electrical properties. This study revealed that highly crystalline P(VDF-TrFE) thin films could be induced at 100 °C by annealing the thin film with a simple and cheap method.

The refocused discrimination induced by variable amplitude minipulses (DIVAM) experiment — Improved domain selection in semicrystalline fluoropolymers by 19F solid state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy

The discrimination induced by variable amplitude minipulses (DIVAM) filter can be tuned to select for signals from a particular domain, therefore it is possible to obtain signals specific to different domains using only one experiment. An early description of the DIVAM sequence, where the filter terminates with cross-polarization, explains this tune ability using a simple one-spin-relaxation model, thereby limiting the selection mechanism to incoherent processes. Recently, a more complete description of the selection behaviour was offered for the DIVAM filter, when it was directly applied to the observed nucleus (direct DIVAM), taking into account both the incoherent and coherent terms. Direct DIVAM experiments on poly(vinylidenefluoride) (PVDF) show significant phase distortions when large excitation angles were used. The signal from the amorphous domain is seen to nutate in a normal fashion with respect to the excitation angle, while those from the crystalline and defect units did not. The refocused DIVAM sequence is introduced to restore normal nutation for all signals. The selection behaviour is investigated using SIMPSON (simulation program for solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy) simulations. These illustrate that the isotropic shift terms have been effectively removed and the dipolar term attenuated, such that the chemical shift anisotropy (CSA) leads to domain selection; however, in a different manner than seen in direct DIVAM. Therefore, this sequence provides a method to select on the basis of the CSA term in the presence of both strong dipolar couplings and a large range of isotropic shifts.

Solid-state 19F NMR investigation of poly(vinylidene fluoride) with high-power proton decoupling

The use of high-power proton decoupling has enabled highly-resolved spectra of fluorine polymers to be recorded, as is exemplified herein for semicrystalline poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF). By means of high MAS speeds (up to 17 kHz), the spinning sidebands are removed from the whole of the relevant chemical shift range. For spectra of the crystalline regions of the polymer, the high-power decoupling is necessary, though its effect is not large. Various relaxation techniques have been used to examine the semicrystallinity and the polymorphism of PVDF, with special pulse sequences used to discriminate between the various domains. Different chemical shifts have been observed for the signals of the amorphous and crystalline phases. Those of the more immobile parts cover a substantial range.
