Abstract
Objectives: This case study examined multi-level social-ecological supports in promoting well-being through college students impacted by one of the deadliest wildfires in U.S. history.Participants: College students attending a large public university were surveyed (N = 354, Mage = 22.7, 76.2% female, 61% white).Methods: Measures included demographics, individual factors (mindfulness, sleep problems), social support (emotional support, family support, and friendship), and sense of community. Multiple linear regression models on well-being were constructed.Results: Findings indicated that mindfulness, sleep disturbances, emotional support, family support, number of close friends, and sense of community were significant predictors of well-being.Conclusion: Findings highlight the importance of universities in proactively bolstering critical social-ecological needs of college students living in communities vulnerable to climate-change accelerated environmental disasters.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES Giftedness is a multidimensional condition. It is increasingly put forward that gifted children (GC) could be a population at high risk for sleep problems. The current study investigated GC and typically developing children for their habitual sleep, night-to-night sleep variability, and parental reports of child sleep. METHODS The sample consisted of 62 GC (31 girls; mean age = 9.63 ± 1.71 years) and 62 typically developing children (31 girls; mean age = 9.68 ± 1.68 years). Groups were age and sex matched. Giftedness was identified using Renzulli's 3-factor definition of giftedness. Sleep duration, quality, and night-to-night variability were assessed using actigraphy. Parents were asked to complete the short-form version of the Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire to report on their child's sleep. Groups were compared with independent sample t-tests and chi-square analyses. RESULTS GC displayed lower sleep efficiencies, more wake time after sleep onset, and more night-to-night sleep variability than typically developing children. GC were found to experience less social jetlag compared to typically developing children, and they also showed more clinically significant sleep problems as reported by parents. CONCLUSIONS Sleep maintenance and stability tend to be challenged in GC. While there is growing evidence that greater sleep variability is associated with poorer physical and emotional health, studies have yet to examine these associations in GC specifically to get a better understanding of giftedness. Overall, there is a need for research focused on both predictors and consequences of sleep patterns and sleep variability in GC. CITATION Bastien L, Théoret R, Bernier A, Godbout R. Abstract
Objective Studies indicate an inverse association between sleep duration and psychological distress. We aimed to explore associations between changes in sleep duration and changes in psychological distress in girls and boys. Methods The Fit Futures Study is a broad adolescent study providing data from 373 girls and 294 boys aged 15–18 years collected in 2010/2011 (FF1) and 2012/2013 (FF2). Psychological distress was measured by the Hopkins Symptom Checklist (HSCL-10) and sleep duration was self-reported. Change score variables were calculated as the change between baseline and follow-up for sleep duration and HSCL-10, respectively. Associations between changes in sleep duration and changes in HSCL-10 were explored by linear regressions, in gender-stratified analyses. Results At FF1, girls and boys slept on average 6.93 (SD = 1.08) and 7.05 (SD = 1.20) hours per night respectively, and correspondingly, 6.83 (SD = 1.19) and 6.85 (SD = 1.21) at FF2. At FF1, 22.8% of the girls and 25.8% of the boys slept ≤ 6 h per night, and correspondingly 28.0% and 28.2% at FF2. In girls and boys, one unit increase (30 min) in sleep duration was associated with a decrease in HSCL-10 score of B [95% CI] = −0.090 [−0.131, −0.048], p < 0.001, and −0.054 [−0.091, −0.017], p < 0.001, respectively. The associations remained significant after adjusting for confounders. Conclusion Our findings show that increased sleep duration was associated with decreased psychological distress during adolescence. Future studies should examine the causality between sleep duration and psychological distress.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To examine the interactive association of neighborhood and family socio-economic characteristics (SEC) on children's sleep. DESIGN Secondary data analyses were completed on the 2014 Ontario Child Health Study, a cross-sectional sample of 10,802 children aged 4-17. PARTICIPANTS Children (aged 4-11, 50% male; N = 6264) with available sleep outcome data. METHODS Multilevel modeling was used to assess the interactive relationship between family- and neighborhood-level poverty in relation to child sleep outcomes (problems falling asleep, problems staying asleep, weekday and weekend time in bed), above the associations of variables known to be related to sleep at the child (ie, child age, sex, internalizing problems, externalizing problems, chronic illness), family (ie, negative parenting behaviors, family structure, parent mental health, years lived in neighborhood, parent education level), and neighborhood levels (ie, neighborhood size, antisocial behavior). RESULTS Neighborhood poverty (p < .01, ß = -0.001, 95% confidence interval [-0.007, -0.002]) was significantly related to shorter weekday time in bed and the interactive association of family and neighborhood poverty was significantly related to weekend time in bed (p < .05, ß = 0.012, 95% confidence interval [0.004, 0.021]). Children living in low poverty neighborhoods with families of higher SEC backgrounds, and children living in high poverty neighborhoods with families of lower SEC backgrounds had the shortest weekend time in bed (9.7 hours). CONCLUSIONS There is a compound relationship of family and neighborhood poverty on children's sleep above and beyond family- and child-level risk factors.

Abstract
Studies of 16p11.2 copy number variants (CNVs) provide an avenue to identify mechanisms of impairment and develop targeted treatments for individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders. 16p11.2 deletion and duplication phenotypes are currently being ascertained; however, sleep disturbances are minimally described. In this study, we examine sleep disturbance in a well-characterized national sample of 16p11.2 CNVs, the Simons Foundation Autism Research Initiative (SFARI) database of youth and adults (n = 692). Factor analyses and multilevel models of derived sleep questionnaires for youth (n = 345) and adults (n = 347) indicate that 16p11.2 carriers show elevated sleep disturbance relative to community controls. Non-carrier family members also show elevated sleep disturbance. However, sleep duration does not differ between carriers and controls. Further studies of sleep in 16p11.2 are needed.

Purpose of Review
In this scoping review, we aimed to (1) provide an overview of chronic sleep reduction by systematically reviewing the existing literature (limited to systematic reviews and meta-analyses), (2) investigate the evidence of the effects of short sleep duration on daytime functioning, and (3) identify research gaps in this field.
Recent Findings
The results showed that (1) clear definitions of chronicity of sleep reduction are lacking—none of the included reviews/meta-analyses provided a full definition—and (2) short sleep duration appeared to be related to obesity and diabetes, whereas relations with cardiovascular disease (CVD), cognitive functioning, emotional problems, general health, and mortality, showed either small effects and appeared to be complex (e.g., for CVD and cognitive functioning), or studies were scarce or completely lacking (e.g., mortality in children/adolescents and emotional problems in adults).
Summary
Although short or insufficient sleep is highly prevalent and is associated with impaired mental and physical wellbeing, as well as pervasive negative consequences for daytime functioning, the concepts of “chronicity” and “chronic sleep reduction” have not been clearly defined and its effects on health are therefore still largely unknown. Moreover, there are large research gaps concerning studies on the relations between short sleep and health consequences. Further studies are recommended to define and operationalize chronicity of sleep reduction and develop measurements that adequately represent the complexity of the concept.

Abstract
Introduction. Weather-related disasters, such as wildfires exacerbated by a rise in global temperatures, need to be better studied in terms of their mental health impacts. This study focuses on the mental health sequelae of the deadliest wildfire in California to date, the Camp Fire of 2018. Methods. We investigated a sample of 725 California residents with different degrees of disaster exposure and measured mental health using clinically validated scales for post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), major depressive disorder (MDD) and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Data were collected at a chronic time-point, six months post-wildfire. We used multiple regression analyses to predict the mental health outcomes based on self-reported fire exposure. Additionally, we included vulnerability and resilience factors in hierarchical regression analyses. Results. Our primary finding is that direct exposure to large scale fires significantly increased the risk for mental health disorders, particularly for PTSD and depression. Additionally, the inclusion of vulnerability and resilience factors in the hierarchical regression analyses led to the significantly improved prediction of all mental health outcomes. Childhood trauma and sleep disturbances exacerbated mental health symptoms. Notably, self-reported resilience had a positive effect on mental health, and mindfulness was associated with significantly lower depression and anxiety symptoms. Conclusion. Overall, our study demonstrated that climate-related extreme events, such as wildfires, can have severe mental illness sequelae. Moreover, we found that pre-existing stressful life events, resilient personality traits and lifestyle factors can play an important role in the prevalence of psychopathology after such disasters. Unchecked climate change projected for the latter half of this century may severely impact the mental wellbeing of the global population, and we must find ways to foster individual resiliency.

Abstract
This systematic literature review examines the relationship between restricted and reduced sleep and school performance, learning and cognitive functioning in typically developing adolescents. Correlational and experimental data were evaluated from 17 studies which included participants ranging from 11 to 19 years in studies from seven countries around the world. The review found that there is evidence that restricted and reduced sleep is negatively associated with school performance and cognitive outcomes, although the findings were mixed. Implications for psychologists working with schools are discussed. More research and evaluation is needed to establish how these factors relate to each other conclusively.

Abstract
Sleep problems are common among children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs). We review sleep disturbance in three major NDDs: autism spectrum disorder, Down syndrome, and fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD). We review associations with functional impairment, discuss how patterns of sleep disturbance inform understanding of etiology, and theorize about mechanisms of impairment. Sleep disturbance is a transdiagnostic feature of NDDs. Caregivers report high rates of sleep problems, including difficulty falling or staying asleep. Polysomnography data reveal differences in sleep architecture and increased rates of sleep disorders. Sleep disturbance is associated with functional impairment and stress among families. Further research is needed to elucidate mechanisms of impairment and develop more effective interventions. Despite significant sleep disturbance in FASD, limited research is available.

Abstract
Objective/Background: Numerous psychiatric conditions characterized by repetitive negative thinking (RNT) are also frequently associated with disruptions in the duration and timing of sleep. The emerging literature supports that these types of sleep disruptions may be associated with negative psychological consequences such as depressed mood, anxiety, and poor emotion regulation, all of which have features of RNT. There is a paucity of research on the association between RNT and disruptions in sleep duration and timing in adolescents. The aim of the current study was to examine if sleep duration and timing in an adolescent sample would be predictive of RNT. Participants: Participants included 1,021 adolescents (ages 11 to 17) from a public school district in upstate New York. Methods: Participants completed a survey about their sleep practices, symptoms of psychopathology, and RNT. Results: Results indicated that sleep timing was predictive of RNT, but sleep duration was not. This result remained even after controlling for symptoms of psychopathology. Further, sleep onset latency was also predictive of RNT. Conclusions: These results indicate that it may be important to make the distinction between sleep duration and sleep timing. Sleep timing may uniquely impact RNT in adolescents.

PURPOSE To describe sleep patterns, problems, and ecology among toddlers (13 to 36 months) from families referred to Child Protective Services (CPS) for maltreatment and to compare sleep duration among a subgroup (24- to 36-month-olds) to previously published population-based data. DESIGN AND METHODS A secondary analysis of a larger longitudinal study was conducted. Participants included 113 parent-toddler dyads recruited out of CPS offices based on having a recent maltreatment referral. Parents reported about their toddler's sleep at two time points (approximately six months apart). RESULTS At the earlier and later time points, respectively, mean sleep duration was 11.03 and 10.90 h (nighttime), 1.36 and 1.36 h (daytime), and 12.47 and 12.28 h (total 24-h). Of the toddlers, 24% and 17% had two or more nighttime awakenings, 34% and 33% had at least a somewhat hard time falling asleep, and 25% and 26% had difficulty sleeping alone. Mean bedtimes were 8:50 pm and 8:58 pm. Nighttime sleeping arrangement/location, nap arrangement/location, and method of falling asleep at night varied. Compared to the population-based data, nighttime sleep duration was 43 min longer and nap duration was 46 min shorter in the CPS sample. CONCLUSIONS Symptoms of behavioral sleep problems were common in this sample of toddlers from families referred to CPS for maltreatment. Distribution of sleep, but not total 24-hour sleep, differed significantly between the CPS sample and the population-based data. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS Nurses caring for toddlers from families involved with CPS can play an integral role promoting sleep health and addressing behavioral sleep problems.

Abstract
The need for sleep in children has sparked extensive research, with inconclusive support for an association between sleep duration and sleep quality and health-related quality of life (HR-QOL). Daytime sleepiness, which captures a child's subjective sleep experience, has seldom been explored. Latent class growth analysis (LCGA) was employed to identify longitudinal trajectories of children's sleepiness. Trajectories were utilized to assess their association with HRQOL. The present sample included 158 children and their self-reports of sleepiness and HRQOL collected at three time points across an academic year. Results provided support for three trajectories of sleepiness, with significant associations between trajectory and later HRQOL. Post hoc tests revealed significant differences in HRQOL between trajectories. Children with high and stable sleepiness-experienced impairments in HRQOL comparable to children with chronic health conditions. Implications include the establishment of daytime sleepiness as a pervasive state with both statistical and clinical significance.

Abstract
Individuals with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) frequently have sleep disturbances, daytime sleepiness, and/or circadian rhythm abnormalities. This article reviews recent advancements and key future directions: examining group differences across the life span, advancing a developmental psychopathology perspective, moving from correlation to causation, conceptualizing ADHD as a 24-hour disorder, understanding sleep in relation to other health behaviors, and evaluating sleep in interventions for individuals with ADHD. This is an exciting time in the empirical study and clinical care of sleep disturbances and circadian rhythm alterations in individuals with ADHD. As research continues to advance, studies are increasingly using large samples and longitudinal/experimental research designs to test hypotheses that will ultimately allow for a more robust and sophisticated understanding of sleep and ADHD.

Abstract
Children with anxiety disorders (AD) characteristically complain of sleep problems and the extent to which cognitive behavioral treatments (CBT) for childhood anxiety produce sleep-based improvements is a topic of increasing interest. The current paper reviews available evidence for subjective sleep complaints and objective sleep alterations in children and adolescents with AD, including investigations of potential changes in sleep following anxiety-focused CBT. Despite pervasive complaints of poor sleep, the empirical literature provides minimal evidence for actual sleep-wake alterations in this population of youth and evidence for sleep-based changes following treatment for anxiety is minimal. In line with calls for more comprehensive models of the role of sleep in developmental psychopathology, several fundamental gaps in understanding are described and highlighted as essential avenues for clarifying the nature and consequences of poor quality sleep among youth with clinical levels of anxiety. In a second section of the paper, an emerging body of novel, translational research investigating more intricate sleep-anxiety relationships is introduced with potential implications for both etiological models and treatment design and delivery.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Using data from a randomized controlled trial, this study investigated whether parent's consistent use of recommended bedtime strategies with infants was a mediating mechanism for improved child sleep. METHODS Expectant mothers were allocated to 4 groups: usual care (Control); additional support regarding Food, (physical) Activity, and Breastfeeding (FAB); advice on infant sleep through 1 group educational session during the antenatal period and 1 home visit when the child was 3 weeks of age (Sleep), or both FAB and Sleep interventions (Combination). An index relating to parent's consistent use of strategies to encourage infant sleep self-settling was developed from data collected when infants were 4 and 6 months of age. Child sleep self-control was measured at 3.5 years of age through a behavior rating scale. Child overnight sleep duration was measured using accelerometers at 1, 2, 3.5, and 5 years of age. Analyses examined whether any association between intervention group and child sleep self-control or sleep duration was mediated by consistent use of bedtime strategies at 4 and 6 months. RESULTS Compared to Controls, Sleep group parents had significantly higher odds of using more intervention strategies consistently (1.63; 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.14-2.33), as did Combination group parents (1.45; 95% CI 1.01-2.07). Consistent strategy use was significantly associated with a decrease in child bedtime behavioral difficulties (0.97; 95% CI 0.95-0.98) and increased sleep duration (0.152; SE = 0.017). Sleep group assignment reduced child sleep self-control difficulties and improved sleep duration indirectly via parent's consistent use of bedtime strategies. DISCUSSION Consistent use of appropriate bedtime strategies in infancy is an important factor that influences child sleep self-control in later development.

Abstract
Efforts to establish an empirical basis for recommended sleep durations during adolescence need to take into account individual differences in optimum sleep, defined as the amount of sleep at which peak functioning is observed. A total of 419 adolescents (Mage = 15.03 years) with Mexican American backgrounds reported their nightly sleep duration and daily mood for a 2-week period at 1 or 2 waves of data collection, 1 year apart. Adolescents also completed an established measure of symptomatology. Multilevel modeling revealed a nonlinear association between sleep duration and next-day mood, whereby both too little and too much sleep were associated with elevated levels of daily distress. Significant individual differences in optimum sleep were observed such that younger adolescents and those with elevated levels of internalizing and total symptomatology evidenced greater sleep durations on nights before they reported their lowest levels of daily distress. Younger adolescents and those with higher internalizing and total symptomatology may need more sleep to reach their peak functioning the next day, at least in terms of daily mood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vigilant attention to threat is commonly observed in anxiety, undergoes developmental changes in early adolescence, and has been proposed to interfere with sleep initiation and maintenance. We present one of the first studies to use objective measures to examine associations between vigilant attention to threat and difficulties initiating and maintaining sleep in an early adolescent anxious sample. We also explore the moderating role of development (age, puberty) and sex. METHODS Participants were 66 peripubertal youth (ages 9-14) with a primary anxiety disorder and 24 healthy control subjects. A dot-probe task was used to assess attentional bias to fearful relative to neutral face stimuli. Eye-tracking indexed selective attentional bias to threat, and reaction time bias indexed action readiness to threat. Sleep was assessed via actigraphy (e.g. sleep onset delay, wake after sleep onset, etc.), parent report (Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire), and child report (Sleep Self-Report). The Pediatric Anxiety Rating Scale assessed anxiety severity. RESULTS Eye-tracking initial threat fixation bias (β = .33, p = .001) and threat dwell time bias (β = .22, p = .041) were positively associated with sleep onset latency. Reaction time bias was positively associated with wake after sleep onset (β = .24, p = .026) and parent-reported sleep disturbance (β = .25, p = .019). Anxiety (severity, diagnosis) was not associated with these outcomes. Sex (β = -.32, p = .036) moderated the relation between initial threat fixation bias and sleep onset latency, with a positive association for males (p = .005), but not for females (p = .289). Age and pubertal status did not moderate effects. CONCLUSIONS Vigilant attention to threat is related to longer sleep onset and reduced sleep maintenance. These associations are not stronger in early adolescents with anxiety. Implications for early intervention or prevention that targets vigilant attention to threat to impact sleep disturbance, and vice versa, are discussed.

Abstract
Neurodevelopmental disorders are associated with atypical development and maturation of brain networks. A recent focus on human connectomics research and the growing popularity of open science initiatives has created the ideal climate in which to make real progress toward understanding the neurobiology of disorders affecting youth. Here we outline future directions for neuroscience researchers examining brain networks in neurodevelopmental disorders, highlighting gaps in the current literature. We emphasize the importance of leveraging large neuroimaging and phenotypic data sets recently made available to the research community, and we suggest specific novel methodological approaches, including analysis of brain dynamics and structural connectivity, that have the potential to produce the greatest clinical insight. Transdiagnostic approaches will also become increasingly necessary as the Research Domain Criteria framework put forth by the National Institute of Mental Health permeates scientific discourse. During this exciting era of big data and increased computational sophistication of analytic tools, the possibilities for significant advancement in understanding neurodevelopmental disorders are limitless.
