Assessment of diabetes dietary knowledge and its impact on intake of patients in Senwabarwana, Limpopo, South Africa

Nutritional Knowledge, Attitudes, and Needs Among Community Residents of Beijing: A Cross Sectional Study

Background

Community health education is essential in combating obesity and cardiovascular diseases by addressing nutritional knowledge gaps and promoting healthier dietary habits in China. The aim of this study was to investigate the nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and needs of residents at Beijing Fengtai District.

Methods

This cross-sectional study was conducted between October 2021 and January 2022, residents from 31 communities of the Fengtai District were given an online questionnaire, which was designed to assess their nutritional knowledge, attitudes, and needs.

Results

From 420 distributed surveys, a total of 416 participants were enrolled for an effective recovery rate of 99.05%. Among them, 317 participants (76.20%) scored 80% or higher on the nutritional knowledge questionnaire, participants with higher nutritional knowledge scores were more likely to be aged over 60 years (OR = 0.21, 95% CI 0.06-0.76, p = 0.02), female (OR = 0.40, 95% CI 0.22-0.73, p < 0.01) and employed (OR = 2.31, 95% CI 1.04-5.12, p = 0.04). While many community residents expressed a desire to receive guidance on dietary guidance (n = 303, 72.84%) dietary matching (n = 303, 72.84%), and preventive health care (n = 286, 68.75%). Residents were familiar with nutritional care clinics (55.05%) and believed that the nutritional care clinics should be increased (59.86%). In addition, 345 residents (83.41%) wanted nutritional care clinics to provide consultation on nutritious meal planning.

Conclusion

Beijing residents need additional access to clinical nutritional resources as their needs are not fulfilled despite a relatively strong knowledge of nutrition.

Daily living activities' performance by male diabetics with sexual dysfunction in South Africa

BACKGROUND

Sexual dysfunction (SD) is a common complication among men living with diabetes (MLWD), which adds to stresses induced by medical condition. Effect of stress on their daily living activities has been only poorly described.

AIM

This study aimed to explore the behaviour and challenges of MLWD experiencing SD in respect of daily living activities.

SETTING

Five clinics in Senwabarwana in Limpopo province.

METHODS

Qualitative approach and phenomenological exploratory design were adopted to collect data from 15 male participants selected from five clinics using purposive homogeneous sampling. One-on-one interviews were conducted using voice recorders, and field notes were taken of non-verbal cues. Unstructured interview guide with principal question enabled instructive probing to be conducted. Data were analysed using eight steps of Tesch's inductive, descriptive and open coding technique.

RESULTS

Participants reported stressful experiences, difficulty coping with diabetes and its accompanying complication of SD that led to fear of losing their wives. They indicated that as a result of stress and difficulty in coping with the condition, they were engaged in less physical activity than before their diagnosis.

CONCLUSION

Sexual dysfunction is prevalent among male diabetics and often feel stressed and worried about losing their wives. They struggle to cope with conditions to the point where they are less capable of performing tasks than they were before diagnosis. These outcomes are critical issues that should be addressed in any diabetes treatment strategy.Contribution: Support-based collaboration of healthcare providers with spouses and revision of South African diabetes management strategy to incorporate healthy coping strategies are recommended.

Family support in the management of diabetes patients' perspectives from Limpopo province in South Africa

BACKGROUND

Family support is linked with improved diabetes outcomes, whereas lack thereof is associated with complications. Living together with people in the same household doesn't guarantee support in diabetes management. Hence it is critical to comprehend patient's lived experiences regarding family support.

OBJECTIVES

To explore family support in diabetes management.

METHODOLOGY

Qualitative method and phenomenological exploratory descriptive design were used to collect data from 17 patients with 6 months or more living with diabetes and getting treatment in clinics of Senwabarwana, Limpopo province. Purposive sampling was used to select participants. One-on-one interviews were conducted using voice recorders and field notes for non-verbal cues were observed. Unstructured interview guide with principal question which enabled probing was used. Data were analysed using 8 Steps of Tesch's inductive, descriptive, and open coding technique. Trustworthiness was ensured.

RESULTS

Participants get support from family members with regards to food, exercise, and collection of medication. Diabetic men with sexual dysfunction also reported getting similar support from their wives whereas, in contrary diabetic women do not get sufficient supports from their husbands. Loss of income among diabetic men has been reported as a source of martial conflicts and unsatisfactory support from wives.

CONCLUSION

Family members of diabetic patients collect medication for patients, including cooking and serving meals to them. Wives of diabetic men outpace husbands of diabetic women in responsiveness to the health needs of their partners, respectively. Diabetic men with impaired sexual function get support from their wives, whilst female patients do not get similar support from their husbands. On the other hand, patients who lost income get inadequate spousal support, which compromises diabetes management and adherence to treatment. This study identifies gender disparities in spousal support as crucial issue requiring an urgent attention, hence the need for gender-biased family-centred diabetes care.

Prevalence of overweight and obesity amongst patients with diabetes and their non-diabetic family members in Senwabarwana, Limpopo province, South Africa

Background

Diabetes remains a public health concern and the second cause of mortality in South Africa. Family history of diabetes increases risk of developing diabetes. Obesity amongst patients is associated with comorbidity, whilst amongst non-diabetic family members it is associated with developing diabetes. This study aimed at determining prevalence of overweight and obesity amongst patients with diabetes and non-diabetic family members.

Methods

A quantitative, cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on 200 patients and 200 non-diabetic family members were selected using systematic random sampling from rural clinics of Senwabarwana. Data were collected using close-ended questionnaires and anthropometric measurements. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference were measured and interpreted according to World Health Organization guidelines. Data were analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences, using both descriptive and inferential statistics. Chi-square test was used to calculate associations at 95% confidence interval where a p-value of < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

Results

Most patients (75.5%) had comorbidities and hypertension was most prevalent (89.0%). Over half of the patients (57.0%) and 38.0% of family members were obese. Most patients (75.0%) and 58.0% of family members had abdominal obesity.

Conclusion

Patients with diabetes suffer from comorbidities are overweight and obese whilst evidence from various studies suggest that non-diabetic family members are at added risk of developing diabetes because of higher BMI and abdominal obesity. There is an urgent need to create a conducive environment that discourages sedentary behaviours through lifestyle modifications using the family centred approach, and involve family members in the care of patients.
