Abstract
BACKGROUND Strength and power represent two crucial physical qualities for the attainment of a high level of performance considering the frequency and the importance of explosive actions occurring during elite soccer match-play. Evaluation of strength and power is a multifaceted concept involving a vast array of tests and outcome variables. Nevertheless, a comprehensive and systematic search of strength and power assessment procedures in elite soccer has yet to be undertaken. OBJECTIVES The aims of this systematic review were to: (1) identify the tests and outcome variables used to assess strength and power of elite male soccer players; (2) provide normative values for the most common tests of strength and power across different playing levels; and (3) report the reliability values of these strength and power tests. METHODS A systematic review of the academic databases MEDLINE, CINAHL, SPORTDiscus, Web of Science and OVID for studies published until August 2023 was conducted, following the Preferred Reporting Items of Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Studies were eligible for inclusion if they: (1) were original research studies, published in a peer-reviewed journal, and written in English language; (2) had the primary aim to assess strength and/or power; (3) players were male and older than 17 years of age (i.e., mean age of the group); and (4) their playing level was defined as "professional", "international" or "elite". RESULTS Regarding strength testing, 115 studies and 29 different tests were identified. The three most frequent strength tests were the knee extensor isokinetic strength test (58 studies), the knee flexor isokinetic strength test (55 studies) and the Nordic hamstring strength test (13 studies). In terms of power testing, 127 studies with 31 different tests were included. The three most frequent power tests were the countermovement jump with hands fixed on hips (99 studies), the squat jump (48 studies) and the vertical jump with arm swing (29 studies). CONCLUSIONS The wide range of different tests and outcome variables identified in this systematic review highlights the large diversity in the employed testing procedures. The establishment of a hybrid testing approach, combining standardised and widely accepted tests for establishing normative standards and enabling comparisons across different contexts, with flexible context-specific testing batteries, has the potential to maximise the impact of testing information for practitioners. In addition, the limited reporting of reliability data across studies highlights the need for practitioners to establish their own reliability measure within their specific contexts, informing the selection of certain tests and outcome variables.

Abstract
Objective To assess the incidence and characteristics of injuries that occurred in the 2020 season of the Paulista Football Championship during the novel coronavirus disease pandemic. Methods We conducted a prospective study using an electronic questionnaire developed by the Medical Committee of the Paulista Football Federation. Results were sent to the team doctors of series A1 and A2 after each round of the Paulista Football Championship. Results Series A1 and A2 presented 12.17 and 15.6 injuries, respectively, per 1000 gaming hours. The strikers were the most affected, with muscle injuries being the most frequent and the lower limbs being the most affected. Most injuries occurred within 31-45 minutes of playing; only 4.5% of injuries required surgery. Conclusion There was no statistical difference in the comparison between pre- and post-pandemic conditions. In relation to the variables studied, the most injuries occurred in the lower limbs; the most common type of injury was muscle strain, followed by sprain and contusion. The most requested exam was MRI; most injuries were classified as moderate (8-28 days). There was no difference between pre- and post-pandemic conditions. Level of Evidence IV, Case Series.

Abstract
Hamstring strain injuries (HSI) are a common occurrence in athletics and complicated by high rates of reinjury. Evidence of remaining injury observed on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) at the time of return to sport (RTS) may be associated with strength deficits and prognostic for reinjury, however, conventional imaging has failed to establish a relationship. Quantitative measure of muscle microstructure using diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) may hold potential for assessing a possible association between injury-related structural changes and clinical outcomes. The purpose of this study was to determine the association of RTS MRI-based quantitative measures, such as edema volume, muscle volume, and DTI metrics, with clinical outcomes (i.e., strength and reinjury) following HSI. Spearman's correlations and Firth logistic regressions were used to determine relationships in between-limb imaging measures and between-limb eccentric strength and reinjury status, respectively. Twenty injuries were observed, with four reinjuries. At the time of RTS, between-limb differences in eccentric hamstring strength were significantly associated with principal effective diffusivity eigenvalue λ1 (r = -0.64, p = 0.003) and marginally associated with mean diffusivity (r = -0.46, p = 0.056). Significant relationships between other MRI-based measures of morphology and eccentric strength were not detected, as well as between any MRI-based measure and reinjury status. In conclusion, this preliminary evidence indicates DTI may track differences in hamstring muscle microstructure, not captured by conventional imaging at the whole muscle level, that relate to eccentric strength.

Abstract
Different eccentric strength assessments are used to identifying the risk of hamstring injury in athletes. However, there is scarce information to determine the association between Nordic-based measurements and the gold standard measurement of eccentric hamstring strength in an isokinetic dynamometer. To investigate the relationship of different measures of eccentric hamstring strength (break-point angle and eccentric strength during Nordic exercise) with eccentric hamstring peak torque measured with an isokinetic dynamometer. Forty-six participants volunteered to participate in this study. Eccentric peak force in the Smart-Nordic System and break-point angle measured as trunk lowering at >20°/s and >150°/s2 during the Nordic exercise via high-frequency video-analysis were compared to eccentric hamstring peak torque in an isokinetic dynamometer set to produce knee extension at 30°/s. There was a moderate association between peak eccentric strength with the Smart-Nordic and isokinetic eccentric hamstring peak torque (r = -0.65, p < 0.001, 95%CI = [-0.76-(-0.50)]). The association between Nordic break-point angle measured at 20°/s (r = 0.49, p < 0.001, 95%CI = [0.30-0.64]) and at 150°/s2 (r = 0.52, p < 0.001, 95%CI = [0.33-0.66]) presented statistically significant but lower associations with isokinetic eccentric hamstring peak torque. All Nordic-based measurements presented acceptable associations with the gold standard isokinetic eccentric hamstring peak torque. However, peak eccentric force measured on the Smart-Nordic device had a better agreement with eccentric peak torque measured with an isokinetic dynamometer than the video-based measurements.Highlights Peak eccentric force measured on the isometric strain-gauges device had a better agreement with eccentric hamstring peak torque measured with an isokinetic dynamometer than the break-point angle.The Nordic-based measurements are an alternative cost-effective method to assess eccentric muscle strength and weakness when the access to isokinetic dynamometry is not feasible.Caution should be taken with certain variables such as participants body mass, hip position and movement speed when interpreting the results of Nordic-based measurements.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The primary aim of this study was to describe eccentric hamstring strength magnitude and asymmetry at the time of return-to-sport (RTS) after an index hamstring strain injury (HSI) and determine if there were differences in strength asymmetry at RTS between those who did and did not go on to re-injure within 1-month and within 3-months of RTS. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. SETTING Laboratory-based. PARTICIPANTS Sixty National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I athletes with index HSI. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Maximum hamstring eccentric strength for each limb, total maximum strength summed across limbs, and between-limb asymmetry at the time of RTS following the index HSI, assessed using the NordBord Hamstring Testing System. RESULTS Of the 60 index HSIs, 8 (13%), and 11 (18%) re-injuries occurred within 1 and 3-months of RTS, respectively. There were no differences between those who did and did not re-injure in maximum eccentric force of either limb (p-values≥0.52), total force from both limbs (p-values≥0.47), and between limb force asymmetry (p-values≥0.91), regardless if re-injury occurred within 1 or 3-months after RTS. CONCLUSIONS Eccentric hamstring strength and asymmetry measured at the time of RTS did not differ between those who did and did not re-injure within 3-months of RTS.

Abstract
The objective of this scoping review is to assess Nordic Hamstring Exercise quality (ANHEQ) of assessments and interventions according to the ANHEQ rating scales and to present practical recommendations for the expedient design and reporting of future studies. A total of 71 Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) assessments and 83 NHE interventions were selected from the data sources PubMed, Scopus, and SPORTDiscus. Research studies which were presented in peer-reviewed academic journals and implemented the NHE during laboratory-based assessments or multi-week interventions met the eligibility criteria. NHE assessments analyzed force (51%), muscle activation (41%), knee angle kinematics (38%), and bilateral symmetry (37%). NHE interventions lasted 4-8 weeks (56%) and implied an exercise volume of two sessions per week (66%) with two sets per session (41%) and ≥8 repetitions per set (39%). The total ANHEQ scores of the included NHE assessments and interventions were 5.0 ± 2.0 and 2.0 ± 2.0 (median ± interquartile range), respectively. The largest deficits became apparent for consequences of impaired technique (87% 0-point-scores for assessments) and kneeling height (94% 0-point-scores for interventions). The 0-point-scores were generally higher for interventions compared to assessments for rigid fixation (87% vs. 34%), knee position (83% vs. 48%), kneeling height (94% vs. 63%), and separate familiarization (75% vs. 61%). The single ANHEQ criteria, which received the highest score most frequently, were rigid fixation (66% of assessments) and compliance (33% of interventions). The quality of NHE assessments and interventions was generally 'below average' or rather 'poor'. Both NHE assessments and interventions suffered from imprecise reporting or lacking information regarding NHE execution modalities and subsequent analyses. Based on the findings, this scoping review aggregates practical guidelines how to improve the design and reporting of future NHE-related research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Compare hamstring strength between Australian Football League (AFL) players with and without a prior hamstring injury and determine the effect of the number of previous hamstring injuries, time since the last injury, and injury severity, on hamstring strength. DESIGN Cross-sectional, retrospective. SETTING AFL clubs. PARTICIPANTS 124 AFL players. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Bilateral hamstring strength was assessed on a Nordbord (Vald Performance) during the Nordic Hamstring Exercise. Self-reported questionnaires were used to record previous hamstring injuries. Players were categorized into No Injury or Hamstring Injury groups. Previously injured players were subgrouped based on number of prior hamstring injuries (single or multiple), time since the last hamstring injury (≤1 or > 1-year ago), and hamstring injury severity (≤3 or > 3 matches missed). RESULTS 19 hamstring injuries were reported. Hamstring strength was not different between players with and without a history of hamstring injury when assessed in absolute (N) or relative (i.e., N.kg-1) terms. No differences in strength were detected between hamstring injury subgroups when assessed in absolute or relative terms. CONCLUSIONS AFL players that experienced a previous hamstring injury did not exhibit deficits in hamstring strength relative to their uninjured limb or players without a previous hamstring injury.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bilateral symmetry evaluation in lower limb is used for injury prevention, and is an indicator of returning to post-injury activity. The aim of present study was to investigate the effect of different angular velocities on asymmetry of the hamstring-to-quadriceps strength ratio. METHOD Isokinetic concentric hamstring to quadriceps (H:Q) peak torque ratio of the 27 male and female professional basketball players was measured at seven angular velocities (60, 90, 120, 150, 180, 180, 240, 300 deg s-1) on both dominant and non-dominant legs with Biodex Isokinetic Dynamometer. Repeated measure analysis of variance was used to assess the effects of angular velocity and limb side on our outcomes (p≤ 0.05). RESULTS The results showed that with increasing angular velocity, the ratio of hamstrings to quadriceps increases (p = 0.001). There was no difference between dominant and non-dominant limbs in the H:Q peak torque ratio (p = 0.254). In addition, velocity of measurement did not affect the bilateral asymmetry of peak torque ratio of the H:Q of both sides (p = 0.852). CONCLUSIONS Based on the results of this study, it can be concluded that measurement velocity does not affect the bilateral asymmetry of the H:Q peak torque ratio of the dominant and non-dominant limbs. In clinical assessments of H:Q bilateral asymmetry, we suggest that physical trainer can assess bilateral asymmetry of H:Q with arbitrary angular velocities.

Abstract
One of the main benefits of the Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) is that it can be performed without the need of any extra material. However, numerous technical execution variables such as the ankle and pelvis position can influence the performance. The primary aims of this study were to investigate the effects of ankle position (i.e., plantar or dorsal flexion) on Nordic Hamstring Break Point (NHBP), repetition time and heel contact force. A secondary aim was to investigate differences in biceps femoris long head and semitendinosus muscle activation. Male professional field hockey players (n = 12) volunteered for the study. Paired t-tests were used to analyse the effect of ankle position on muscle NHBP, eccentric peak torque and repetition time. Ankle dorsal flexion resulted in a higher NHBP (p = 0.002, effect size [ES] = 1.48 [0.57 to 2.38]), repetition time (p = 0.004, ES = 0.98 [0.24 to 1.72]) and both absolute and relative heel contact force (p = 0.028, ES = 0.67 [0.01 to 1.34], p = 0.017, ES = 0.76 [0.07 to 1.44], respectively) compared to plantar flexion. Muscle activation was not significant different. This study showed a higher NHBP, absolute and relative heel contact force and repetition time with a dorsal flexed ankle vs. a plantar flexed ankle in the NHE, without changes in hamstrings muscle activation.

Abstract
CONTEXT Eccentric knee flexor strength assessments have a key role in both prevention and rehabilitation of hamstring strain injuries. OBJECTIVE To verify the reliability of a clinical test for measuring eccentric knee flexor strength during the Nordic hamstring exercise using a commercially available handheld dynamometer. DESIGN Reliability study. SETTING Physical Therapy Laboratory, Federal University of Health Sciences of Porto Alegre (Brazil). PARTICIPANTS Fifty male amateur athletes (soccer or rugby players; 24 [3] y). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Eccentric knee flexor strength. RESULTS When compared with a load cell-based device, the clinical test using a handheld dynamometer provided smaller force values (P < .05) with large effect sizes (.92-1.21), moderate intraclass correlation (.60-.62), typical error of 30 to 31 N, and coefficient of variation of 10% to 11%. Regarding the test-retest reproducibility (2 sessions separated by 1 week), the clinical test provided similar force values (P > .05) with only small effect sizes (.20-.27), moderate to good correlation (.67-.76), typical error of 23 to 24 N, and coefficient of variation of 9% to 10%. CONCLUSION The clinical test with handheld dynamometer proposed by this study can be considered an affordable and relatively reliable tool for eccentric knee flexor strength assessment in the clinical setting, but results should not be directly compared with those provided by load cell-based devices.

Abstract
The study aimed to verify how age, height, body mass and body mass index affects the eccentric knee flexor strength during the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) in male soccer players. Ten professional soccer clubs were included in this cross-sectional trial. Three hundred and eleven soccer players (192 from senior and 119 from under-20 teams) were assessed using a load-cell based device. Pearson's correlation tests were performed between peak force values (measured in Newtons) and age, height, body mass and body mass index. The individual-limb strength (n = 622 limbs) and the between-limb average strength (n = 322 players) presented no correlation with age (r = 0.12 for both) and height (r = 0.13; r = 0,15), and fair correlations with body mass (r = 0.37; r = 0,41) and body mass index (r = 0.40; r = 0,43). In conclusion, the male soccer players' eccentric knee flexor strength measured during the NHE execution is not affected by age or height. Body mass and body mass index play somewhat effect on strength, thus normalising absolute strength measures by body mass or body mass index can provide more accurate analysis in some contexts.

Influence of Football Match-Play on Isometric Knee Flexion Strength and Passive Hip Flexion Range of Motion in Football Referees and Assistant Referees. Abstract
The aim of this study was to examine the acute effect of officiating a football (soccer) match on isometric knee flexion strength and passive hip flexion range-of-motion (ROM) in referees and assistant football referees. Twelve referees (25.3 ± 3.3 years) and twenty-three assistant referees (25.1 ± 4.8 years) underwent measurements on isometric knee flexion strength and passive hip flexion ROM before and after officiating an official football match. Referees’ and assistant referees’ running patterns were monitored during the match using GPS technology. In comparison to pre-match values, referees reduced their isometric knee flexion strength (−12.36%, p = 0.046, Effect size [ES] = −0.36) in the non-dominant limb, while no significant differences were reported in the dominant limb (−0.75%, p = 0.833, ES = −0.02). No effect of the match was found in hip flexion ROM values in dominant (−4.78%, p = 0.102, ES = −0.15) and non-dominant limb (5.54%, p = 0.544, ES = 0.19). In assistant referees, the pre-to-post-match changes in isometric knee flexion strength (dominant limb −3.10%, p = 0.323, ES = −0.13; non-dominant limb −2.18%, p = 0.980, ES= 0.00) and hip flexion ROM (dominant limb 1.90% p = −0.816, ES = 0.13; non-dominant limb 3.22% p = 0.051, ES = 0.23) did not reach statistical significance. Officiating a match provoked a reduction in isometric knee flexion strength in the non-dominant limb of football referees, while no differences were reported in assistant referees.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Muscle strain injury leads to a high risk of recurrent injury in sports and can cause long-term symptoms such as weakness and pain. Scar tissue formation after strain injuries has been described, yet what ultrastructural changes might occur in the chronic phase of this injury have not. It is also unknown if persistent symptoms and morphological abnormalities of the tissue can be mitigated by strength training. PURPOSE To investigate if heavy resistance training improves symptoms and structural abnormalities after strain injuries. STUDY DESIGN Randomized controlled trial; Level of evidence, 1. METHODS A total of 30 participants with long-term weakness and/or pain after a strain injury of the thigh or calf muscles were randomized to eccentric heavy resistance training of the injured region or control exercises of the back and abdominal muscle. Isokinetic (hamstring) or isometric (calf) muscle strength was determined, muscle cross-sectional area measured, and pain and function evaluated. Scar tissue ultrastructure was determined from biopsy specimens taken from the injured area before and after the training intervention. RESULTS Heavy resistance training over 3 months improved pain and function, normalized muscle strength deficits, and increased muscle cross-sectional area in the previously injured region. No systematic effect of training was found upon pathologic infiltration of fat and blood vessels into the previously injured area. Control exercises had no effect on strength, cross-sectional area, or scar tissue but a positive effect on patient-related outcome measures, such as pain and functional scores. CONCLUSION Short-term strength training can improve sequelae symptoms and optimize muscle function even many years after a strain injury, but it does not seem to influence the overall structural abnormalities of the area with scar tissue. Abstract
There are recent data suggesting an association between the R577X polymorphism (rs1815739) in the gene encoding α-actinin-3 (ACTN3) and the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. The purpose of this study was to analyze the association of rs1815739 with risk of, and recovery time from non-contact soft-tissue muscle injuries in professional soccer players. Forty-six (22 male and 24 female) players from a top-level professional soccer team were assessed during five consecutive seasons: the genotype distribution was: RR, 41.3%; RX, 47.8%; and XX, 10.9%. There was a trend towards a higher risk of muscle injury associated with the XX genotype (p = 0.092, with no injury-free XX player during the 5-year study period) and a significant genotype effect for the time needed to return to play (p = 0.044, with the highest value shown for the XX genotype, i.e., 36 ± 26 days, vs. 20 ± 10 and 17 ± 12 days for RR and RX, respectively). In conclusion, the XX genotype might be associated not only with a higher risk of non-contact muscle injuries, but also of recovery time from these conditions. However, more research in larger cohorts is needed to confirm this preliminary hypothesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Training programs that include the Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) have been shown to increase eccentric knee flexor strength and biceps femoris fascicle length in male athletes. However, the effect of NHE on female athletes remains unknown. PURPOSE To investigate the collective and individual responses of professional female soccer players engaged in a preseason training program with the NHE regarding eccentric knee flexor strength and biceps femoris long head fascicle length. STUDY DESIGN Quasi-experimental study. METHODS Sixteen amateur female soccer players (without a NHE training routine) were evaluated 8-weeks apart to: (1) assess reliability of eccentric knee flexor strength and biceps femoris fascicle length measures; and (2) determine the typical error of measures that would be used to discriminate training responders and non-responders. The NHE training group had 17 professional female soccer players who performed an 8-week training program with the NHE during preseason. Within-group analysis was performed with paired sample t-tests (pre- vs. post-training), and individual responses were determined using the typical error criteria. RESULTS The non-trained group's data demonstrated that measures of strength (ICC=0.82-0.87, typical error = 12-13 N) and fascicle length (ICC=0.92-0.97; typical error = 0.19-0.38 cm) were reliable. In the NHE training group, both limbs increased the eccentric knee flexor strength (~13%; ES=0.74-0.82) and the biceps femoris fascicle length (~6%; ES=0.44-0.65). Twelve players (~71%) were considered responders to the NHE training program for the eccentric knee flexor strength, while eight athletes (~47%) were responders for the biceps femoris fascicle length. CONCLUSION The 8-week preseason training program with the NHE increased both eccentric knee flexor strength and biceps femoris fascicle length in professional female soccer players. More than two-thirds of players demonstrated a meaningful increase in eccentric strength, while nearly half achieved consistent fascicle length increases with the NHE training.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Given the severe economic and performance implications of hamstring injuries, there are different attempts to identify their risk factors for subsequently developing injury prevention strategies to reduce the risk of these injuries. One of the strategies reported in the scientific literature is the application of interventions with eccentric exercises. To verify the effectiveness of these interventions, different eccentric strength measurements have been used with low-cost devices as alternatives to the widespread used isokinetic dynamometers and the technically limited handheld dynamometers. Therefore, the purpose of the present systematic review was to summarize the findings of the scientific literature related to the evaluation of eccentric strength of hamstring muscles with these new technologies. METHODS Systematic searches through the PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases, from inception up to April 2020, were conducted for peer reviewed articles written in English, reporting eccentric strength of hamstrings assessed by devices, different to isokinetic and handheld dynamometers, in athletes. RESULTS Seventeen studies were finally included in the review with 4 different devices used and 18 parameters identified. The pooled sample consisted of 2893 participants (97% male and 3% female: 22 ± 4 years). The parameters most used were peak force (highest and average), peak torque (average and highest), and between-limb imbalance (left-to-right limb ratio). There is inconsistency regarding the association between eccentric hamstrings strength and both injury risk and athletic performance. There is no standardized definition or standardization of the calculation of the used parameters. CONCLUSIONS The current evidence is insufficient to recommend a practical guide for sports professionals to use these new technologies in their daily routine, due to the need for standardized definitions and calculations. Furthermore, more studies with female athletes are warranted. Despite these limitations, the eccentric strength of hamstring muscles assessed by different devices may be recommended for monitoring the neuromuscular status of athletes.

Abstract
CONTEXT The Nordic hamstring exercise (NHE) is known to reduce hamstrings injury (HIS) risk in athletes. In order to optimise the NHE it is important to understand how acute resistance training variables influence its performance. OBJECTIVE To examine the effects of different inter-set rest intervals (ISRI) on force indices during performance of the NHE. Design: Crossover Study. SETTING Laboratory based. PATIENTS OR PARTICIPANTS Ten (age = 20.7 ± 2.3 years; height = 179.4 ± 5.5 cm; body mass = 83.9 ± 12.4 kg) well-trained young male team-sport athletes. INTERVENTION Participants performed 2 x 6 repetitions of the NHE with either a SHORT (one-minute) or LONG (three-minute) ISRI. All sets were performed on the NordBord. MAIN OUTCOMES MEASURE(S) Peak force (N), average force (N), percent maintenance (%) and percent decline (%) were recorded for both dominant and non-dominant limbs as well as inter-limb force asymmetries (%) calculated. RESULTS Analyses revealed no statistically significant interactions or main effects (p > 0.05) between conditions and sets in all variables. However, analysis of individual repetitions showed significant reductions (p < 0.05, ES = 0.58-1.28) in peak force from repetition four onwards. CONCLUSIONS Our findings suggest that a one-minute ISRI is sufficient to maintain force production qualities and inter-limb asymmetries between sets during the NHE in well-trained athletes. However, practitioners should be aware of the potentially high decrements in peak force production that may occur within the set.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study aimed at verifying the effect of a football match on the eccentric knee flexor strength of male professional players along a 72-h period. STUDY DESIGN Quasi-experimental study. SETTING Football club facilities. PARTICIPANTS Fifteen players were assessed in four timepoints: 24 h before, immediately after, 48 h and 72 h after the match. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES The eccentric knee flexor strength was assessed during the Nordic hamstring exercise execution. RESULTS Players presented a significant strength reduction immediately after match (Δ = 12%; p = 0.001; large effect size, d = 1.10), and did not recover their strength capacity within a 48 h-period (Δ = 6%; p = 0.011; moderate effect size, d = 0.57). At 72 h after the match, strength was similar to baseline levels (Δ = 3.5%; p = 0.122; small effect size, d = 0.34). Secondarily, individual response analysis considered a player 'fully recovered' when his strength deficit compared to the baseline measure was lower than the measurement coefficient of variation (i.e., <5%). Only 6 (40%) and 9 (60%) players were 'fully recovered' at 48 h and 72 h after the match, respectively. CONCLUSION Professional football players experienced an immediately post-match drop on the eccentric knee flexor strength, and significant strength deficits persisted for a 48-h period. Some players were not recovered at 72 h after the match.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the relationship between one eccentric and two isometric tests commonly used to assess hamstring strength in professional soccer. SETTINGS Professional soccer club. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. PARTICIPANTS Twenty male professional soccer players. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Hamstring force was quantified during 3 tests (Nordic hamstring eccentric, 90:20 isometric posterior-chain strength and isometric 15° knee flexion) using a load cell, a handheld dynamometer and a force platform, respectively. RESULTS Poor relationships and low concordance were observed between isometric and eccentric tests, showing different ability to discriminate hamstring weakness and asymmetries. The Nordic hamstring test identified between-limb asymmetry >15% in 30% of the players, 25% in the 15° knee flexion and 5% in the 90:20 test. All players obtained different results in the three tests with only one showing asymmetry >15% in two tests. CONCLUSION Results obtained in each test cannot inform the others. Mechanical outputs of these tests must be used for particular purposes during the prevention, rehabilitation and monitoring process of hamstring injury. Isometric testing might be preferable during the initial phases of the recovery process of a hamstring injury while the Nordic hamstring test might be used in the last stages or detect muscle weakness/asymmetries in non-injured players.
