Self-consciousness mediated the role of the insula in self-disclosure: Evidence from rs-fMRI data

INTRODUCTION

Self-disclosure is integral to forming intimate connections within interpersonal exchanges. While its advantages are widely acknowledged, the cerebral basis of self-disclosure is not thoroughly understood. Insight into its neural underpinnings is crucial for refining therapeutic approaches, especially for challenges associated with self-disclosure.

METHODS

Our study probed the association between spontaneous neural activity, gauged via resting-state fMRI, and self-disclosure tendencies among 258 healthy university students, employing Regional Homogeneity (ReHo) and behavioral correlation analysis. We also explored the mediating effect of self-consciousness on this relationship.

RESULTS

The ReHo-behavior correlation analysis uncovered that higher ReHo values in the insula are predictive of greater self-disclosure in social settings. Additionally, the mediation analysis identified self-consciousness as a partial intermediary between spontaneous neural activity in the insula and self-disclosure behaviors.

CONCLUSION

The findings imply that decreased similarity in the insula during rest-state may amplify self-conscious emotions such as embarrassment, thus illuminating the cognitive processes that underlie disclosure behaviors. Critically, these insights have practical ramifications for enhancing therapeutic methods and communication skills by aiding individuals in navigating self-consciousness obstacles, thereby promoting more transparent and efficacious self-disclosure.

White matter connectivity in brain networks supporting social and affective processing predicts real-world social network characteristics

Human behavior is embedded in social networks. Certain characteristics of the positions that people occupy within these networks appear to be stable within individuals. Such traits likely stem in part from individual differences in how people tend to think and behave, which may be driven by individual differences in the neuroanatomy supporting socio-affective processing. To investigate this possibility, we reconstructed the full social networks of three graduate student cohorts (N = 275; N = 279; N = 285), a subset of whom (N = 112) underwent diffusion magnetic resonance imaging. Although no single tract in isolation appears to be necessary or sufficient to predict social network characteristics, distributed patterns of white matter microstructural integrity in brain networks supporting social and affective processing predict eigenvector centrality (how well-connected someone is to well-connected others) and brokerage (how much one connects otherwise unconnected others). Thus, where individuals sit in their real-world social networks is reflected in their structural brain networks. More broadly, these results suggest that the application of data-driven methods to neuroimaging data can be a promising approach to investigate how brains shape and are shaped by individuals' positions in their real-world social networks.

Self-disclosure during the COVID-19 emergency: Effects of narcissism traits, time perspective, virtual presence, and hedonic gratification

During the COVID-19 emergency, people must face the invisible threat of uncertain death and comply with social distancing and other related protective measures. But social networking sites (SNSs) like WeChat have emerged as alternative contexts where people can maintain self and obtain gratification, despite the disclosure of self to others often being a challenging issue. To examine the effect of personality factors on people's self-disclosure on SNSs, we develop a model based on the time perspective theory and the socioemotional selectivity theory. We suggest that people's narcissism traits and two types of time perspective (i.e. future and present-hedonistic) have positive effects on their self-disclosure. In addition, we propose that virtual presence and hedonic gratification mediate the effects of both future time perspective and present-hedonistic time perspective. We obtain a sample of 516 WeChat users in China and take ex-ante and post-hoc measures to deal with common method variance. By means of partial least squares-structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) methods, we validate both our measurement model and the structural model, so we confirm all the hypothesized causal paths in the proposed model. Our study broadens the boundaries of the time perspective theory and the socioemotional selectivity theory, and offers new insights for addressing some of the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Generalized Self-Disclosure Explains Variance in Outness Beyond Internalized Sexual Prejudice Among Young Adults

Outness, or self-disclosure of sexual orientation, plays a key role in the sexual identity development of LGB individuals and is linked with mental health. Lower outness has been consistently linked with higher internalized sexual prejudice; however, no extant research has explored the relationship between generalized self-disclosure and outness. The purpose of this study was to investigate the incremental validity of general self-disclosure to explain variance in outness beyond what is accounted for by internalized sexual prejudice among young adults (N = 387; 46 lesbians; 78 gay men; 49 bisexual men; 214 bisexual women). Self-disclosure explained additional variance in outness beyond internalized sexual prejudice. While outness is related to internalized sexual prejudice, general personality characteristics such as self-disclosure may also play a role in LGB individuals' disclosure of their sexual orientation. These findings suggest that while internalized sexual prejudice is still the primary driver of lower outness, lower general self-disclosure may also play an important role. Closeted individuals may be weighing the risks and benefits of disclosing their sexual orientation, as they would with any other personal information. For those struggling with self-disclosure of sexual orientation, clinicians should attend to internalized sexual prejudice while also noting an individual's comfort with general self-disclosure.

The Original Social Network: White Matter and Social Cognition

Social neuroscience has traditionally focused on the functionality of gray matter regions, ignoring the critical role played by axonal fiber pathways in supporting complex social processes. In this paper, we argue that research on white matter is essential for understanding a range of topics in social neuroscience, such as face processing, theory of mind, empathy, and imitation, as well as clinical disorders defined by aberrant social behavior, such as prosopagnosia, autism, and schizophrenia. We provide practical advice on how best to carry out these studies, which ultimately will substantially deepen our understanding of the neurobiological basis of social behavior.

Change in emotional self-concept following socio-cognitive training relates to structural plasticity of the prefrontal cortex

INTRODUCTION

Self-referential processing is a key component of the emotional self-concept. Previous studies have shown that emotional self-referential processing is related to structure and function of cortical midline areas such as medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC), and that it can be altered on a behavioral level by specific mental training practices. However, it remains unknown how behavioral training-related change in emotional self-concept content relates to structural plasticity.

METHODS

To address this issue, we examined the relationship between training-induced change in participant's emotional self-concept measured through emotional word use in the Twenty Statement Test and change in cortical thickness in the context of a large-scale longitudinal mental training study called the ReSource Project.

RESULTS

Based on prior behavioral findings showing increased emotional word use particularly after socio-cognitive training targeting perspective-taking capacities, this study extended these results by revealing that individual differences in the degree to which participants changed their emotional self-concept after training was positively related to cortical thickness change in right mPFC extending to dorsolateral PFC (dlPFC). Furthermore, increased self-related negative emotional word use after training was positively associated with cortical thickness change in left pars orbitalis and bilateral dlPFC.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings reveal training-related structural brain change in regions known to be involved in self-referential processing and cognitive control, and could indicate a relationship between restructuring of the emotional self-concept content as well as reappraisal of negative aspects and cortical thickness change. As such, our findings can guide the development of psychological interventions targeted to alter specific facets of the self-concept.

Amplitude of low-frequency oscillations associated with emotional conflict control

Previous fMRI studies related to emotional conflict focused on task activation during the specific experimental paradigm. Yet, the underlying spontaneous neural activity was largely unknown. Here, this was the first study using resting-state fMRI to explore the spontaneous neural activity related to emotional conflict. We used the whole-brain analysis to investigate the association between emotional conflict and amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) in a large sample. We found that the emotional conflict effect was negatively correlated with ALFF in the right AMY. These findings implied that AMY was the key region which plays a crucial role in emotional conflict.
