Perceptions on technology for volunteer respite care for bedridden elders in Chile

Breaking Down Barriers: Findings from a Literature Review on Housing for People with Disabilities in Latin America

Accessibility to housing is crucial for people with disabilities as it provides them with equal opportunities and allows them to live independently. A systematic literature review has been conducted to understand the current research on accessibility in housing for people with disabilities in Latin America. The study analysed 56 papers and used co-word analysis to identify common themes and topics within the documents. The results of the analysis showed that Brazil (61%) is the country with the most research on the subject, physical disability, at 36%, is the impairment most analysed, and interventions or analysis for the older people (45%) in their homes is the most researched type of population. The co-word analysis revealed that topics such as policy, regulations, the use of technologies, ergonomics interventions, and architectural criteria or barriers to the daily life of disabled people were frequently discussed in the papers. Although this work shows a substantial and growing increase in research on housing for people with disabilities in Latin America, it also demonstrates the importance of increasing research on other types of impairment, such as visual and cognitive-intellectual disabilities, and including children, caregivers, or even young adults.

Effect of Nursing Outcome-Oriented Intervention on Airway Management in Elderly Long-Term Bedridden Patients

Objective

This study intended to explore the nursing outcome-oriented intervention's effect on airway management in elderly long-term bedridden patients.

Methods

A total of 120 cases of elderly long-term bedridden patients admitted to our hospital from May 2018 to June 2020 were enrolled and randomly divided into the observation group (n = 60) and control group (n = 60). The control group received the routine nursing intervention, while the observation group received the nursing outcome-oriented intervention. Forced expiratory volume (FEV1), forced vital capacity (FVC), and maximal voluntary ventilation (MVV) in the first second were compared between the two groups before and after the intervention. The pulmonary infection of the two groups was observed. Total protein, hemoglobin, albumin, and cholesterol levels were compared between the two groups. Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAMA) and Hamilton Depression Scale (HAMD) were used to evaluate the two groups' psychological status before and after the intervention. The Generic Quality of Life Inventory-74 (GQOLI-74) assessed the two groups' quality of life.

Results

After the intervention, the levels of FEV1, FVC, and MVV; total protein, hemoglobin, albumin, and cholesterol; and scores of physical function, psychological function, social function, and material life function in the observation group were higher than those in the control group. Pulmonary infection, secondary infection, the infection rate is more than 3%, HAMA, and HAMD scores, and the incidence of pressure ulcers, aspiration, constipation, and the falling bed was lower than those in the control group, with statistical significance (all P < 0.05).

Conclusion

Nursing outcome-oriented intervention can effectively improve lung function, pulmonary infection, nutritional status, negative mood, and quality of life of long-term bedridden elderly patients.

Socially assistive robotics and older family caregivers of young adults with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD): A pilot study exploring respite, acceptance, and usefulness

Introduction

The need for caregiver respite is well-documented for the care of persons with IDD. Social Assistive Robotics (SAR) offer promise in addressing the need for caregiver respite through ‘complementary caregiving’ activities that promote engagement and learning opportunities for a care recipient (CR) with IDD. This study explored the acceptability and usefulness of a SAR caregiver respite program responsive to feedback from both young adults with IDD and their older family caregivers (age 55+).

Method

Young adults with IDD and caregiver dyads (N = 11) were recruited. A mixed methods research design was deployed in three phases: Phase I with four focus groups to inform the program design; Phase II for program demonstration and evaluation with pre- and post-surveys; and Phase III with post-program interviews for feedback and suggestions.

Results

Both young adults with IDD and their caregivers scored favorably the social presence of, social engagement, and satisfaction with robot Pepper. Though there was no significant improvement of caregiving burden/stress as well as well-being of the young adults with IDD based on surveys, results from interviews suggested that the SAR may offer physical/emotional respite to caregivers by providing companionship/friendship as well as promoting independence, safety/monitoring, and interactive engagement with children.

Discussion

SAR has potential in providing respite for older family caregivers. Future studies need a longer program design and larger sample size to develop a promising intervention and test its feasibility and efficacy.

Perceptions on Connecting Respite Care Volunteers and Caregivers

The most common requirement for informal caregivers is to experience a respite or temporary break from their caregiving routine. Some initiatives have been undertaken to provide respite care through volunteer providers. We report on a qualitative study carried out in Santiago, Chile, to learn about the willingness of potential volunteers to provide respite care for bedridden older persons, as well as their willingness to use information and communication technologies (ICT) to connect to caregivers in a low-income neighbourhood within their own geographic district. A trustworthy institution that mediates the volunteer–caregiver relationship is considered to be important by potential volunteers. Potential volunteers were found to be willing to use ICT to provide respite care, sharing basic information about themselves. However, they were also aware of the digital skill gap that may exist between them and the caregivers and were distrustful of unknown websites that could connect them to care recipients.
