Abstract
BACKGROUND Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia (ALL) is the most prevalent neoplasia in children and teenagers in Mexico. Although epidemiological data supports that children's residence close to emissions from vehicular traffic or industrial processes increases the risk of ALL; and the IARC states that benzene, PAHs, and PM 2.5 are well-known environmental carcinogens, there is a gap in linking these carcinogenic hazards with the sources and their distribution from scenario perspective. AIM To identify ALL clusters in the population under 19 years of age and characterize the environment at the neighborhood level by integrating information on sources of carcinogenic exposure using spatial analysis techniques in the Metropolitan Area of San Luis Potosi, Mexico. METHODS Using the Kernel Density test, we designed an ecological study to identify ALL clusters from incident cases in the population under 19 years of age. A multicriteria analysis was conducted to characterize the risk at the community level from carcinogenic sources. A hierarchical cluster analysis was performed to characterize risk at the individual level based on carcinogenic source count within 1 km for each ALL case. RESULTS Eight clusters of carcinogenic sources were located within the five identified ALL clusters. The multicriteria analysis showed high-risk areas (by density of carcinogenic source) within ALL clusters. CONCLUSIONS This study has a limited source and amount of available data on ALL cases, so selection bias is present as well as the inability to rule out residual confounding factors, since covariates were not included. However, in this study, children living in environments with high vehicular density, gas stations, brick kilns, incinerators, commercial establishments burning biomass, or near industrial zones may be at higher risk for ALL.

Abstract
Brick production causes a lot of pollution in the form of dust, fumes, and toxic substances. Therefore, brick workers are highly exposed to pollutants and present a high risk of developing respiratory diseases. The objective of this research was to determine the exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and toluene in urine and evaluate the effects on health using markers of oxidative stress in exhaled breath condensate (EBC) as well as the exposure to pollutants in suspended particles of the studied area. Exposure to PAHs and toluene was evaluated using hydroxylated markers (OH) of PAHs and hippuric acid in urine, respectively. Cytokines like TNF-α, INF-y, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10 y GMCSF in EBC were also evaluated. PM2.5 particles were measured during an 8-h work shift. The results in brick workers presented a total OH-PAHs concentration of 97.3 µg/L and hippuric acid concentration of 0.2 g/L. The environmental concentrations of suspended particles were found within a range of 41.67-3541.6 μg/m3. The median of cytokines oscillated between 11.8 pg/mL to 1041 pg/mL. In conclusion, these results are similar to those of occupations in which there is high exposure to pollutants and populations with lung diseases. For that reason, the brick production sector requires prevention and control strategies against the pollutants emitted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Benzene is a ubiquitous air pollutant that is well known to cause hematopoietic effects in humans including leukemia. Recently, several studies have discussed its non-carcinogenic effects such as diabetes. This study aimed to investigate the association between diabetes and urinary trans,trans-muconic acid (t,t-MA), one of benzene metabolite, using adult data from Korean National Environmental Health Survey (KoNEHS) cycle 3 (2015-2017). METHODS This study analyzed 3,777 adults (1,645 men and 2,132 women) from the KoNEHS cycle 3 (2015-2017). The distribution and fraction of each independent variable were presented separately according to the urinary benzene metabolite levels (t,t-MA quartiles) and diabetes to determine the general characteristics of the subjects. Odds ratios (ORs) were calculated using logistic regression after stratification by gender and smoking status to identify the association between urinary t,t-MA and diabetes. RESULTS Compared with the first quartile (reference), the risk of diabetes significantly increased above the 4th (1.834 [1.107-3.039]) quartile in men and above the 3rd (1.826 [1.095-3.044]) and 4th (2.243 [1.332-3.776]) quartiles in women after adjustment. Stratified analysis based on smoking revealed that the ORs for the 3rd (1.847 [1.146-2.976]) and 4th (1.862 [1.136-3.052]) quartiles in non-smokers and those for the 2nd (1.721 [1.046-2.832]), 3rd (1.797 [1.059-3.050]), and 4th (2.546 [1.509-4.293]) quartiles in smokers were significantly higher. CONCLUSIONS We confirmed that urinary t,t-MA is significantly associated with diabetes regardless of gender and smoking status. And further studies are necessary to access the clinical impacts of this findings.

Abstract
Quantification of hippuric acid and methylhippuric acid in human urine matrices provides information on the toluene and xylene exposure conditions. High performance liquid chromatography coupled with UV detection is the preferable technique for hippuric acid and methylhippuric acid detection in human urine. This study was conducted to present analytical techniques developed for monitoring of hippuric acid and methylhippuric acid in human urine matrices during 2016-2021.

Abstract
Occupational exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOC) might generate serious worker health damages. Therefore, biological monitoring is essential to evaluate exposure biomarkers from highly toxic chemicals, ensuring better attention to the worker health. In this study was developed and validated a bioanalytical method based on high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to photodiode array (HPLC-PDA) for the quantification of VOC biomarkers in urine samples from Federal University of Goias (UFG) workers. Samples were collected from 30 occupationally exposed subjects after application of a questionnaire survey. The following biomarkers hippuric acid, methyl-hippuric acid, mandelic acid, phenylglyoxylic acid and phenol were quantified, representing exposition to toluene, xylene, styrene, ethylbenzene, benzene and phenol solvents, respectively. Hippuric acid levels were found close to or above the reference values, although a subject had levels higher than preconized by Biological Limit Values (BLV) guideline of 4.0 mg/g creatinine. Five subjects had 3 and 4-methylhippuric acid ranging from 0.1 to 1.0 mg/g creatinine. These results indicate a moderate to high VOC exposure from UFG workers. Multivariate analysis generated four clusters and indicated that histotechnicians and graphic workers need especial attention on occupational VOC exposure. The results from this study reinforce the need for reliable methods able to the biological monitoring as an important tool for assessing occupational exposure.
